Coral reefs are expected to be severely impacted by rising seawater temperatures associated with climate change. The fertilization
and early embryogenesis of four reef-building coral species representing three Indo-Pacific families were examined in a series
of laboratory experiments where temperatures were increased up to 5–6°C at ambient. High levels of fertilization and normal
embryogenesis were observed for Favites abdita, Favites chinensis and Mycedium elephantotus at temperatures to 32°C (+5°C) and embryos developed normally until the 5th cell cleavage. Acropora millepora was the only species to be affected by higher temperatures, exhibiting significantly reduced fertilization and a higher frequency
of embryonic abnormalities at 32°C (+4°C), and fertilization ceased altogether at 34°C (+6°C). Early cell cleavage rates increased
with temperature up to 32°C for all species. 相似文献
Growth of a choline requiring auxotroph of Neurospora crassa on medium lacking exogenous choline produces large changes in the levels of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Whole cell fatty acid distributions were found to vary widely between different phospholipid species of normally growing, choline-supplemented cultures with phosphatidylcholine showing the highest levels of unsaturation and anionic phospholipids and cardiolipin having the lowest. In these lipids, choline deprivation produced little change in fatty acid profiles of phosphatidylethanolamine, whereas changes in fatty acids of phosphatidylcholine and acidic phospholipids resulted in increased levels of unsaturation at both growth temperatures. Microsomal phospholipids also showed fatty acid variability with sharp decreases in phosphatidylcholine unsaturates and increases in acidic phospholipid unsaturated fatty acids at low growth temperatures. Fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenylhexatriene in vesicles formed from total cellular and microsomal lipids showed that choline deprivation produces changes in thermotropic properties in the lipids in deprived cultures at either growth temperature. The effective differences in fluorescence polarization between choline-deprived and supplemented cultures grown at a given temperature were found to be comparable to those produced by temperature acclimation in normally growing cultures over a temperature range of 22 K. 相似文献
Altitudinal gradients are frequently used to study environmental effects on species diversity. Recent quantitative studies on Lepidoptera focussed on tropical mountain systems and often reported unimodal diversity peaks at “mid-elevations”;, a pattern also often found in other taxa. Here we used methodologically comparable, nocturnal Macrolepidoptera samples from the Swiss Alps to analyze environmental correlates of diversity. Using seasonal data (monthly samples from April to November at altitudes between 600 and 2400 m a.s.l.) allowed to decouple altitude and some climate variables for analyses. We found that the altitude–diversity pattern changes with season. In spring and autumn, diversity decreased with increasing altitude, while we found a unimodal peak of diversity at mid-elevations during summer. This excluded all hypothetical causes of diversity variation that do not allow for seasonality. Temperature was an important correlate of diversity, whereas precipitation was not. These results were separately corroborated for the two most common families (Noctuidae and Geometridae). However, diversity patterns of the two families were not particularly close, and unexplained variance of climatic explanations was substantial in all cases. The patterns of faunal overlap did not explain the unimodal diversity pattern, and we claim that we lack a generally valid explanation for this common phenomenon. 相似文献
Acholeplasma laidlawii cells were grown in cholesterol-enriched medium and exposed continuously to either air (control), 4.0 vol.% halothane in air at 1 atm pressure (4% atm halothane), or 80% cyclopropane in oxygen for 24 h at 37°C. Cells grown in the presence of 4% atm halothane or 80% cyclopropane had approximately twice as much membrane cholesterol content/mg protein as the control cells. Cells grown in an anesthetic environment also tended to have a higher membrane cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio compared to control cells. Membranes isolated from halothane-exposed cells grown in a cholesterol-enriched medium were more ordered at 37°C (measurements were made with no anesthetic present) than membranes from control cells grown in an identically enriched medium. This difference in membrane physical state between control and anesthetic-exposed cells decreased as the temperature decreased, and disappeared at approx. 23°C. Continuous exposure of A. laidlawii to 4% atm halothane or 80% cyclopropane for 24 h did not markedly affect membrane fatty acid composition, either in cells grown on an unsupplemented medium or in cells grown in a medium enriched in myristic, palmitic or stearic acids. These results further support the hypothesis that an increased membrane cholesterol content may play a role in the tolerance or dependence that develops after chronic exposure to anesthetic agents. 相似文献

In Newfoundland, Canada, aquaculture sites set up over deep, hard bottom substrates dictate the use of visual indicators to monitor aquaculture footprints on the seafloor. Opportunistic annelids (referred to as opportunistic polychaete complexes, or OPC) are among these indicators. The effect of temperature on the distribution and survival of Ophryotrocha cyclops, the species constituting OPC in Newfoundland aquaculture sites is not known. To address this knowledge gap, this study assesses O. cyclops survival at different temperatures in the laboratory, and describes relationships between O. cyclops presence and seafloor temperatures measured in the field. Results show that worms died within two days at temperatures > 12 °C in the laboratory, and appear restricted to temperatures below 7.9 °C at aquaculture sites, tending to be more frequent at temperatures below 5 °C. We recommend that seafloor temperature be recorded and considered in the assessment of benthic aquaculture impact based on OPC presence. 相似文献
While the life history traits of animals usually exhibit substantial phenotypic plasticity, such plasticity might reflect
either a simple alteration in the level of energy accrual and use or a genuine shift in energy allocation tactics between
environmental conditions. The latter would represent genuine plasticity in the life history itself, and thus it is important
to distinguish which of these two processes underlies the observed plasticity of life history traits. We investigated this
issue by examining the effects of temperature and salinity variation during ontogeny on the allocation of biomass and lipid
storage in male sailfin mollies, Poecilia latipinna. We raised males from four natural populations from birth to maturity in controlled laboratory conditions. Neither distinct
temperatures (23 or 29°C) nor different salinity regimes (2, 12, or 20 parts per thousand) affected body mass, although males
from different populations differed substantially in body mass. However, males raised at the higher temperature had a greater
allocation of biomass to testis and a lower allocation to viscera mass. The amount of stored lipid was altered by temperature
variation but the direction and magnitude of the effect varied substantially among males from the different populations. Salinity
variation affected neither biomass allocation nor the level of lipid storage. These results indicate that male mollies possess
a flexible developmental program with respect to temperature that canalizes body size and alters the allocation of biomass
among competing demands for reproductive readiness and capacity for energy storage.

Seeds of ten species of Cistaceae, Ericaceae and Poaceae were examinated to compare their responses to high temperatures and ash, simulating the direct effect of fire on germination. A variable response to these factors between families and within species from the same family was detected. In Cistaceae, heat treatment pre-sowing stimulated germination. In Ericaceae, germination was stimulated by thermic shock, but a wide range of response was detected (between all four species), from Erica ciliari, very sensitive, to Daboecia cantabrica and Calluna vulgaris which showed no significant response. The range of reaction shown by the species of this family suggest that the size of the seeds is directly related to the difference in response, at least in species with a similar structure. In Poaceae, germination was not found to be dependent upon thermic shock. The effect of ash varies in magnitude. Although it decreased the germination percentage in all species, in Avenula marginata (Poaceae) the effect was not statistically significant, whilst in Ericaceae, particularly in those showing the highest levels of germination in the control (C. vulgaris and E. umbellata), the effect is to inhibit germination completely. In respect to the effect of ash the families could be arranged in the order Ericaceae>Cistaceae>Poaceae.Complex interactions between various dormancy types and seed size could explain these results. In species which depend on physical dormancy temperature has an important role. When other dormancy type is dominant in the control of germination, the medium characteristics could have a relevant role on seed response. In addition, the seed-size could determine the threshold of tolerance to temperature. 相似文献
Marine ecosystems are complex adaptive systems with physical and biological processes operating on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Here, we present an operational regional indicator for California's continental shelf system and investigate its skill in predicting a variety of biological responses across trophic levels. This updated Multivariate Ocean Climate Indicator (MOCI) version 2 includes data that are readily available from the Internet so the indicator can be automatically updated and shared regularly. MOCIv.2 is a simplified version of MOCIv.1, but it captures ocean-climate variability similarly. MOCIv.2 illustrates all major ENSO events that occurred over the past 25 years as well as the phasing and magnitude of the most recent North Pacific marine heat wave, dubbed ‘The Blob’. It also shows differences in the magnitude and timing of ocean-climate variability in different regions off California. MOCIv.2 has skill in nowcasting marine ecosystem dynamics, from zooplankton to top predators, and therefore may be useful in establishing bio-physical relationships important to ecosystem-based fisheries and wildlife management in California. 相似文献
Acoustic communication in Gryllus firmus is temperature-coupled: temperature induces parallel changes in male calling song temporal pattern, and in female preference for song. Temperature effects on song production and recognition networks were localized by selectively warming head or thorax or both head and thorax of intact crickets, then eliciting aggression song production (males) or phonotaxis to synthetic calling song (females). Because male song is produced by a thoracic central pattern generator (CPG), and because head ganglia are necessary for female song recognition, measurements of female phonotaxis under such conditions may be used to test the following competing hypotheses about organization of the song recognition network: 1. A set of neurons homologous to the male song CPG exist in the female, and are used as a template that determines preferred values of song temporal parameters for song pattern recognition (the common neural elements hypothesis), and 2. temporal pattern preference is determined entirely within the head ganglia. Neither selective warming of the head nor of the thorax was effective in changing female song preference, but simultaneous warming of head and thorax shifted preference toward a faster song in most preparations, as did warming the whole animal by raising ambient temperature. These results suggest that phonotactic preference for song temporal pattern is plurisegmentally determined in field crickets. Selective warming experiments during aggression song production in males revealed that syllable period is influenced but not completely determined by thoracic temperature; head temperature is irrelevant. The song CPG appears to receive some rate-setting information from outside the thoracic central nervous system. 相似文献
