The Mont-Saint-Michel bay located on the East Atlantic Flyway is the first site in France for wintering shorebirds, with, on average, 53,000 individuals in January. Seven species represent 96% of that community: dunlin (Calidris alpina), knot (Calidris canutus), oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus), curlew (Numenius arquata), grey plover (Pluvialis squatarola), bar-tailed godwit (Limosa lapponica) and black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa). The international bird census organised by Wetlands International in mid-January gave us the opportunity to study, for a 23 years period, population variations in the bay. Despite a quite good carrying capacity, we showed that the decreasing proportion of 4 species in the bay relative to the other French populations may indicate a general perturbation of the bay. We discuss the different hypotheses to explain that observation.

Bi-monthly counts of waterbirds were made between March and September 2003 at an ephemeral pan in the Northern Cape Province following the first substantial inundation since 1988. Bi-annual counts between 1991 and 2003 indicated that the pan infrequently supported waterbirds, with waterfowl and small waders generally being the dominant species. During the bimonthly counts, a total of 50 waterbird species was recorded, with the most dominant species, both in terms of numbers and duration of presence, being Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus (max. 378), Cape Shoveller Anas smithii (max. 260) and South African Shelduck Tadorna cana (max. 200). Most other waterfowl and wader species were regular but in lower numbers. Species groups that occurred in limited numbers or for short periods include primarily herons, grebes, flamingos, ibises and storks. Species abundance and richness reached a peak one month after the pan was inundated, followed by a gradual decline over the ensuing two months.

Arinaitwe, J., Byaruhanga, A. & Mafabi, P. 2000. Key sites for the conservation of waterbirds in Uganda. Ostrich 71 (1 &2): 102–105.

Uganda has a rich bird diversity with 1 008 species including 28 listed species (Collar et al. 1994) and 207 species of regional conservation concern (Bennun & Njoroge 1996). Over 240 species are waterfowl, of which nine are globally threatened, 45 are regionally threatened and five are considered to be of national conservation interest. This high waterbird diversity corresponds to a large wetland area covering about 10% of the land area of Uganda. However, only 6% of the wetlands fall under gazetted protected areas and only one site is recognised as of global importance under the terms of the Ramsar Convention. Three recent activities of JA, the National Wetlands Programme and East Africa Natural History Society (Uganda), have produced new information on distribution and abundance of waterbirds in Uganda. Concurrent with these activities, criteria for the identification of globally threatened species (Collar et al. 1994), species of regional conservation concern (Bennun & Njoroge 1996) and nationally important species (National Wetlands Programme, in press) have been developed. Also, criteria for selection of sites at the global (Ramsar and IBA), regional (IBA) and national (National Wetlands Programme) levels have become available. This paper reviews the advances in the knowledge of waterbirds in Uganda and applies the above criteria to highlight sites that are crucial for conservation at global, regional and national levels.

Regional trends in the populations of waders wintering largely on estuaries were analysed using data collected by the Wetland Bird Survey between the winters of 1969/70 and 1995/96 to assess whether trends seen at the national level were repeated across regions of Britain. Not all were. Over this period, the numbers of seven of the 12 species studied increased in south and southeast England, but remained static or declined in southwest England and south Wales. Possible explanations for this are proposed. Increases in the number of Curlews Numenius arquata in the north and northeast of Scotland occurred after 1981/82, when the species stopped being a legal quarry species. A rapid decline in Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus and Knot Calidris canutus numbers in east England after 1988/89 may be linked to a change in the Wash shell-fisheries. Warmer winters may be making it less essential for birds to winter in the milder west of Britain. In two pairs of regions, northeast and southeast Scotland, and in northwest England/north Wales and northeast England, waders showed similar long-term population changes. The long-term population trends of Oystercatchers in the different regions correlate to those of Ringed Plovers Charadrius hiaticula and Knot, while those of Ringed Plovers are very similar to those of Bar-tailed Godwits Limosa lapponica. In some regions of Britain, the population trends of some species varied a lot between sites, a factor that is an important consideration when determining the size and geographical position of regions for future regional indexing. The present separation of regions based on water catchments and geography has given a useful insight into population changes at a finer spatial scale but it could be improved further with added biological input.

Two groups of waterbirds have been chosen to assist in measuring the success of restoration of the traditional channel configuration, hydrologic regimes, and floodplain wetlands of the Kissimmee River: waterfowl (Anseriformes) and waders (Ciconiiformes). Waterfowl are dominant, swimming omnivores that use seeds, foliage, and invertebrates; waders are mainly walking predators that eat fish of various sizes. Both can be censused by well-established air and ground techniques, and both can be used to compare post-restoration with channelized or pre-channelization population data (waterfowl) or bird use of channelized versus restored wetlands (waders). In addition to use of population data, species richness and regularity of occurrence should provide a basis for assessing restoration of biological integrity. Conceptual models of avian habitat use for nesting and feeding demonstrate patterns of segregation that will aid assessments for some species. Other species show high overlap in foods and habitats and will require additional measures of response. To understand these patterns and reasons underlying waterbird use, measurements of habitat type, vegetation structure, and food resources will be essential. Integration of these high trophic-level guilds with evaluations of other system components will ensure an ecosystem perspective. Predicted responses to restoration suggest an increase in species richness and number of individuals of many species.

Waterbird surveys were conducted regularly in the Qiantangjiang River estuary and Hangzhou Bay from July 2007 to November 2011. A total of 128 species (nine orders and 18 families) were recorded, including 119 migrants which accounted for 93% of the total species; eleven species were listed as National Protected Species. Inter-specific correlation analysis for 13 shorebird populations and nine duck populations recorded over time found that 21 pairs of shorebirds and 23 pairs of ducks were correlated. By looking at seasonal dynamics and migration patterns we were able to divide the migration process into six stages: (1) late July to late September was the migration peak of shorebirds, which were dominated by Limosa limosa, Calidris ruficollis and Charadrius mongolus. (2) Early October to mid-December was the migration peak of wintering migrants of shorebirds and ducks, which were the first two large groups in our study areas. (3) Late December to mid-February was the wintering period of migration waterbirds. (4) Late February to late March was the peak migration of ducks and the winter migrants of shorebirds dominated by Calidris alpina. (5) Early April to mid-May was the migration peak of passage migrants such as, Calidris ruficollis, Calidris acuminate and Limosa limosa but the population size of shorebird winter migrants dominated by Calidris alpine was still larger than the former. (6) Late May to mid-July was the breeding season of all egrets, summer migrants of gulls and several species of shorebirds. Our surveys show that interaction among species is possibly an important determinant of community composition of shorebirds and wintering ducks during the migration season. It may be the geographical position and community composition of migrant shorebirds across Hangzhou Bay that mean during the northward migration there are far more shorebirds than during the southward migration.

Increasing goose population sizes gives rise to conflicts with human socioeconomic interests and in some circumstances conservation interests. Grazing by high abundances of geese in grasslands is postulated to lead to a very short and homogeneous sward height negatively affecting cover for breeding meadow birds and impacting survival of nests and chicks. We studied the effects of spring grazing barnacle geese Branta leucopsis and brent geese Branta bernicla on occupancy of extensively farmed freshwater grasslands by nesting and brood‐rearing waders on the island Mandø in the Danish Wadden Sea. We hypothesized that goose grazing would lead to a shorter grass sward, negatively affecting the field occupancy by territorial/nesting and chick‐rearing waders, particularly species preferring taller vegetation. Goose grazing led to a short grass sward (<5 cm height) over most of the island. To achieve a variation in sward height, we kept geese off certain fields using laser light. We analyzed effects of field size, sward height, mosaic structure of the vegetation, proximity to shrub as cover for potential predators, and elevation above ground water level as a measure of wetness on field occupancy by nesting and chick‐rearing waders. The analysis indicated that the most important factor explaining field occupancy by nesting redshank Tringa totanus, black‐tailed godwit Limosa limosa, oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus and lapwing Vanellus vanellus as well as by chick‐rearing black‐tailed godwit and lapwing was short vegetation height. Distance to shrub cover and elevation were less important. Hence, despite very intensive goose grazing, we could not detect any negative effect on the field occupancy by nesting nor chick‐rearing waders, including redshank and black‐tailed godwit, which are known to favor longer vegetation to conceal their nests and hide their chicks. Possible negative effects may be buffered by mosaic structures in fields and proximity to taller vegetation along fences and ditches.

Understanding the environmental factors shaping wetland attractiveness for waterbirds is an important question in wetland ecology and for conservation purposes. However, detailed data from numerous North African wetlands, notably those situated in inland areas, are still lacking. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the factors influencing wetland use by waterbirds wintering in one of such poorly known habitat systems, namely the Saharan wetland complex of Douz, in south-western Tunisia. Thirty-four waterbird species (20 wading birds and 14 waterfowl species) were found to winter in this area. Using discriminant function analyses, we found that wetland size was the unique variable discriminating between occupied and unoccupied sites for total waterbirds and wading birds, while waterfowl distribution was related to both wetland size and water depth. Wetland size also provided the strongest predictor of species richness of wading birds, waterfowl and total waterbirds. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of wetland size as a key factor determining the attractiveness of wetlands for waterbirds wintering in the Saharan wetland complex of Douz. The possible explanations of this wetland size effect are discussed.
