Plants have always been the prime focus in medicine industries due to their enormous ethnobotanical uses and multitude of biological and therapeutic properties. In the current study, preliminary phytochemical composition, Total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) with the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of hydroalcoholic extract and n-hexane, chloroform and n-butanol fractions of five selected medicinal plants [Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers., Lavandula stoechas L., Aesculus indica (Wall. ex Cambess.) Hook, Iris ensata Thunb., and Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers.] from Pakistan, have been evaluated. TPC and TFC were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu’s and AlCl3 methods respectively. The antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and CUPRAC while the antibacterial potential of these plants was determined by agar well diffusion assay. K. pinnata (Lam.) Pers. exhibited the highest TPC (695 ± 13.2 mg.GA.Eq.g-1DE ± SD) in n-butanol fraction and the highest TFC in its chloroform faction (615 ± 6.31 mg Q.Eq.g−1 DE ± SD). The n-butanol fraction and hydroalcoholic extract of I. ensata Thunb. exhibited strong antioxidant potential by DPPH and CUPRAC assays respectively, whereas K. pinnata (Lam.) Pers. n-butanol fraction exhibited the strongest reducing potential. The hydroalcoholic extract of all tested plants exhibited significant antibacterial activity against tested bacterial strains with ZI (12–18 mm). Conclusively, K. pinnata (Lam.) Pers. (Family: Crassulaceae) and I. ensataThunb. (Family: Iridaceae) exhibited the highest antioxidant and antibacterial potential. They can be explored for the isolation of phytoconstituents responsible for this potential and serve as a lead for the production of new natural antioxidants and antibacterial agents that can be used to cure various diseases. 相似文献

Forests play an essential role towards net primary productivity, biological cycles and provide habitat to flora & fauna. To monitor key physiological activities in forest canopies such as photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, spatially-explicit and precise information of the biochemical (biological) variables such as Leaf Chlorophyll Content (LCC) is required. While lookup-table (LUT)-based Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) inversion against optical remote sensing imagery is regarded as a physically sound and robust approach for retrieving biochemical and biophysical variables, regularization procedures are required to offset the problem of ill-posedness. To optimize the RTM inversion of LCC over a sub-tropical pine forest plantation, in the Western Himalaya, we investigated the role of: (1) cost functions (CFs), (2) added noise, and (3) multiple finest solutions in LUT inversion. Principal CFs were evaluated belonging to three categories: information measures, M-estimates, and minimal contrast approaches. The inversion approaches were applied to a LUT produced by the coupled leaf-canopy model known as PROSAIL RTM and tested in contrast field spectral data obtained from reflectance data derived from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) images taken over the canopies of covered pine forests. The Bhattacharyya divergence, an information measure, outperformed all other CFs in LCC inversion, with R2 of 0.94, RMSE of 6.20 μg/cm2 and NRMSE of 12.27% during the validation. The optimized inversion strategy was subsequently applied to a UAV-acquired multispectral image at an 8.2 cm pixel resolution for detailed landscape forest LCC mapping. The associated residuals as provided by the LUT-based inversion provided insights in the spatial consistency of the LCC map. 相似文献

Population dynamics and aggregation patterns of nine kinds of stored-grain mites were studied in two 7.5 tonne lots of hulled (cv. Random) and hulless (cv. Terra) oat cultivars with 12–14% moisture content stored in two wooden bins in Manitoba, Canada during 1978–84. Random oats harbored more mites than Terra oats. Lepidoglyphus destructor Schrank was the most common granivorous mite and Cheyletus eruditus Shrank the most common predatory mite. Ecological data on a tydeid mite, Paratriophtydeus coineaui André, are presented for the first time. Because they were more abundant in Terra oats with higher fat acidity values (FAV) than Random oats with lower FAVs, L. destructor and Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist could be used as bioindicators of spoilage of stored oats. All species analyzed showed some significant difference in their abundance at different depths in the grain bulk; some species showed depthxtime interaction. Aggregation patterns indicated most mite species had overdispersed (clumped) distribution. T. granarius, and Blattisocius keegani Fox-Androlaelaps casalis Berlese had a distinct aggregation pattern in each oat cultivar. 相似文献

The effect of age and environmental parameters on growth, cholinesterase (ChE), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities were assessed in juvenile Apporectodea caliginosa earthworms. Earthworms were maintained in three types of soil- loam, sandy, and clay- at a range of moisture contents (15-30%), and temperatures (5-20 C). Earthworm age (1-3 months) had no significant affect on ChE activity. Growth rates were influenced by all environmental parameters tested and these effects were interrelated. Optimum conditions for growth appeared to be in loam or sandy soil with 25-30% moisture at 10-15 C. The GST activity was influenced by soil temperature and activity was significantly higher at 15 C than at 5 C and 10 C. Soil type also influenced GST activity and this influence was dependent on moisture content. In sandy soil GST activity was significantly lower at 30% moisture than at lower moisture contents, in loam soil GST activity was significantly higher at 15% moisture than at higher moisture contents, while in clay soil GST activity was not affected by moisture content. These results indicate that in field experiments when evaluating GST activity soil temperature and soil type need to be consistent between control and 'contaminated sites'. To elucidate the basic food requirement of spiders, the important polyphagous predators of rice-plant insect pests, an attempt was made to measure the respiratory energy loss of fasting spiders, Lycosa pseudoannulata. Relationship between fresh (y) and dry (x) weights of spiders inhabiting the bottom layer of the rice-plant community was represented by the following allometric equation:y=0.428x0.872. The carbon dioxide production by previously fed and unfed females under the dark at 29°C 100% R. H. was measured by a titration technique. The relationship between fresh body weight and CO2 production by unfed animals could be represented by the equation M=aWb, M being the CO2 output per individual per day and W the fresh body weight. The constant b, which determines the slope of curve, was 0.808. Respiration of the adult female with 100 mg fresh weight was 1.155±0.250 mg CO2/100 g fresh weight/day or 48.69 mg CO2/g dry weight/day. This value corresponds to 35.81 cal/g fresh weight/day or 150.94 cal/g dry weight/day. Supposing the calorific content of spiders to be 5820 cal/g dry weight, rate of the respiratory energy loss to total energy of the body was estimated to be 2.60%. This rate did not strongly contradict with the loss of fresh body weight before and after the measurement. The metabolic rate showed remarkable fluctuation with changing food supply. The CO2 production of starved individuals decreased to 83.63±16.34% as compared with individuals which were fed before the measurement. 相似文献

Algae are considered excellent candidates for renewable fuel sources due to their natural lipid storage capabilities. Robust monitoring of algal fermentation processes and screening for new oil-rich strains requires a fast and reliable protocol for determination of intracellular lipid content. Current practices rely largely on gravimetric methods to determine oil content, techniques developed decades ago that are time consuming and require large sample volumes. In this paper, Nile Red, a fluorescent dye that has been used to identify the presence of lipid bodies in numerous types of organisms, is incorporated into a simple, fast, and reliable protocol for measuring the neutral lipid content of Auxenochlorella protothecoides, a green alga. The method uses ethanol, a relatively mild solvent, to permeabilize the cell membrane before staining and a 96 well micro-plate to increase sample capacity during fluorescence intensity measurements. It has been designed with the specific application of monitoring bioprocess performance. Previously dried samples or live samples from a growing culture can be used in the assay. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper presents an instructional model to incorporate English-language communication between international practicing scientists and English learners into secondary science lessons. The aim was to identify a method that lets pupils practice English as the language of science and that elicits positive affective attitudes in the form of task-specific intrinsic motivation. As a central condition, the approach had to be feasible in realistic school settings. The pupils that participated in the two studies presented (total n = 218) were native German speakers and interacted with English-speaking experts in the curricular contexts of cytology and immunology via videos. We assessed pupils’ task-specific intrinsic motivation (as defined by their interest/enjoyment of the exchange and their relatedness to the expert) and compared it to their subject-specific interest in biology and English before and after the project. We further contrasted the motivational ratings of bilingually experienced and inexperienced groups of pupils. Both groups reported similar and remarkably high task-specific intrinsic motivation for the video exchange. Subject-specific interests remained constant before and after implementing the method and were correlated with interest/enjoyment in the standard, but not in the bilingually experienced classes. The applicability of the exchange model in different topics, subjects, and student groups is discussed. 相似文献

The white mullet Mugil curema is distributed along the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific coasts and constitutes an important food resource in Mexico. However, during recent years the capture of this mugilid has decreased considerably, especially in Bahía and Ensenada de La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The effects of different levels of temperature (22, 26, and 30°C) and salinity (15, 25, and 35) on the instantaneous growth rate, energy content, and condition factor of early juveniles of Mugil curema were evaluated. Fish showed a lower growth rate, lower body energy content, and a less condition factor when exposed to high salinity and temperature. On the basis to the results obtained and considering the unusual extreme temperatures and salinity registered in Ensenada de La Paz, it is expected low functional performance of juvenile mullets beyond the overfishing might contribute to the population decrease of this resource. 相似文献
