S模型y=e1.2811-0.0885/a(R2=0.051,df=500,F=26.74,P0.01)可近似拟合林麝体况得分和年龄的关系。

Early growth in male and female fallow deer fawns
In this paper we present data from a long-term study on earlygrowth and related variables in fallow deer fawns living inlarge enclosures. Pre-winter body mass was constantly higherand more strongly correlated to subadult body mass in malesthan in females. To find out the mechanism for this higher pre-wintermass in males, we analyzed the variation in pre-winter massin relation to sex, year, mother's body mass, age and parityof mother, birth date, birth mass, growth rate, suckling behavior, and other behaviors. Birth mass was higher for male fawns, andgestation length, birth date, and weaning date did not differbetween the sexes. Consequently, both pre- and postnatal growthwere faster in males than in females. No behavioral differenceswere found between the sexes that could explain the differencein postnatal growth. Pre-winter mass was positively relatedto mother's body mass. Heavy mothers gave birth earlier andto larger offspring who grew at a higher rate, independent ofoffspring sex. However, male fawns born to primiparous mothershad relatively lower growth than male fawns born to multiparousmothers. This was not the case for female fawns. Suckling timeafter the first 2 weeks was positively related to mother's bodymass and growth of offspring. However, no measurements of sucklingbehavior differed between male and female fawns. Our results, except for the effect of parity on male and female growth, indicatethat selection has not acted on mothers to promote faster earlygrowth in males.

Suckling and allosuckling were studied in relation to the age and sex of fawns in a captive population of fallow deer (Dama dama) showing a high rate of allosuckling (73% of the suckling bouts). No difference occurred between the sexes in either the duration or frequency of suckling and allosuckling. The frequency of suckling bouts decreased rapidly during the first four weeks of life while the frequency of allosuckling bouts increased rapidly between the second and the third week and remained constant until the conclusion of the observations (11th week of life). Birth date affected allosuckling, with late-born fawns performing fewer and shorter allosuckling bouts. The lack of a negative relationship between suckling and allosuckling frequencies failed to confirm the hypothesis that allosuckling allows fawns to complete their milk requirements on foster mothers. Both inbreeding and crowding could explain the absence of particular relationship between fawns and foster mothers.

A group of eight (2.6) White-lipped deer (Cervus albirostris) and four (1.3) fawns, born in 2010, kept in Tierpark Berlin were observed with focal point at circadian behavioural pattern, mother-child-interaction and the ontogeny of behaviour. The circadian rhythm of the animals proved to be bimodal and in its activity periods clearly synchronized with daily routine in the zoo. The animals showed different types of behaviours concerning metabolism (47%), comfort and resting (25%), movement (11%) and other behaviour (17%). The parallels between the distribution of behaviour and spatial use during the day point to an obvious relevance of different shaped enclosure areas to the behaviour. Calves of White-lipped deer are considered to be typical hiders („Ablieger“). Initially the fawns entered the enclosure trough the fence four to five times a day, exclusively for suckling. Until the fourth week of life their distribution of behaviour and their daily rhythm were well-adjusted to that of the adults. Despite of an age difference up to 17 days, the hiding period of all four fawns ended more or less at the same point of time; in case of the oldest fawn after 6, in case of the youngest fawn already after 3½ weeks of life. This indicates a synchronisation of the ontogeny of behaviour between older fawns and younger ones living with each other. In the process of dietary change from milk to solid food this synchronization was also to be seen. During the first two weeks the fawns were almost exclusively in contact with their mothers, but with time the bonding between the four fawns got stronger. The young affect each other in their development of behaviour. Above-mentioned traits of weaning in mammals point to the onset of weaning in the observed animals at three to four weeks of live. All in all the behavioural development of White-lipped deer obviously depends on physiological needs and abilities as well as social environment.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that affects free-ranging and captive North American cervids. Although the impacts of CWD on cervid survival have been documented, little is known about the disease impacts on reproduction and recruitment. We used genetic methods and harvest data (2002-04) to reconstruct parentage for a cohort of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns born in spring 2002 and evaluate the effects of CWD infection on reproduction and fawn harvest vulnerability. There was no difference between CWD-positive and CWD-negative male deer in the probability of being a parent. However, CWD-positive females were more likely to be parents than CWD-negative females. Because our results are based on harvested animals, we evaluated the hypothesis that higher parentage rates occurred because fawns with CWD-positive mothers were more vulnerable to harvest. Male fawns with CWD-positive mothers were harvested earlier (>1 mo relative to their mother's date of harvest) and farther away from their mothers than male fawns with CWD-negative mothers. Male fawns with CWD-positive mothers were also harvested much earlier and farther away than female fawns from CWD-positive mothers. Most female fawns (86%) with CWD-positive mothers were harvested from the same section as their mothers, while almost half of male and female fawns with CWD-negative mothers were farther away. We conclude that preclinical stages of CWD infection do not prohibit white-tailed deer from successfully reproducing. However, apparently higher harvest vulnerability of male fawns with CWD-positive mothers suggests that CWD infection may make females less capable of providing adequate parental care to ensure the survival and recruitment of their fawns.

This study explores the role of cortisol and early life experiences in the regulation of maternal behavior and mood in teen and adult mothers. Primiparous mothers (n=119) (teen mothers < 19 years, n=42), young mothers (19-25 years, n= 4), and mature mothers, (>25 years, n=43) were assessed for their maternal behavior, mood, and hormonal profile at approximately 6 weeks postpartum. Outcome measures were analyzed as a function of age and early life experience. Results showed an interaction between age and type of maternal behavior, where teen mothers engaged in more instrumental (e.g. changing diapers, adjusting clothes) less affectionate (e.g., stroking, kissing, patting) behavior, and mature mothers engaged in more affectionate and less instrumental behavior. When groups were reassessed based on early life experience (consistency of care during the first 12 years of life: consistent care; having at least one consistent caregiver, inconsistent care; having multiple and changing caregivers), an interaction was also found between consistency of care and type of behavior shown, where mothers who received inconsistent care engaged in more instrumental and less affectionate behavior. Compared to mature mothers, teen mothers who were breast feeding also had higher salivary cortisol levels, and high cortisol in teen mothers related to decreased fatigue and increased energy. These results suggest that early life experiences are linked to mothering behavior and are consistent with the emerging human and animal literature on intergenerational effects of mothering style.

Suckling time and fawn growth in fallow deer (Dama dama)
The total suckling time and the fawns' absolute increase in weight from birth to weaning were studied in a group of fallow deer over two consecutive calving seasons. The aim was to clarify the use of suckling time as a predictor of parental input in fallow deer. When all subjects from both years are taken into account, no positive relation between suckling time and growth was found. This was due to at least two important factors: (i) fawns to primiparous mothers sucked relatively longer, with no corresponding increase in weight, compared to multiparous mothers; and (ii) suckling time during the first two weeks after birth seems to be an inadequate measure of milk transfer.

Tree rubbing by brown bears (Ursus arctos) is a well-known behavior throughout the animal’s distribution. There is still insufficient information on the characteristics and function of the behavior. We investigated seasonal frequency of tree rubbing by brown bears, characteristics and reasons for selection of rub trees, and characteristics of bear signs on and around rub trees in a mixed coniferous–broad-leaved deciduous forest in Hokkaido, Japan. Between 1998 and 2009, we found 172 rub trees and confirmed 995 tree rubbings. We found that the rub trees were used repeatedly by bears within a year and for multiple years (more than 10 years). Tree rubbing by brown bears was observed from April to November, with a peak between May and June that corresponds to the mating season of brown bears. Abies sachalinensis was selected and broad-leaved trees were avoided for tree rubbing based on estimated availability in natural forest. The preference for Abies sachalinensis might be because the strong odor of resin attracts bears for rubbing their head and neck in resinous substances and for increasing the detectability of their markings by receptor bears. Selected trees for rubbing were located right beside the trail on relatively level ground among trees along roads or trails. Trees had a relatively large diameter at breast height. These characteristics would also serve to increase the access and detectability of their markings. Series of pad-shaped depressions was the most frequently observed (70 %) indication of bear rubbing, followed by debarking (51 %) and clawing (30 %). In terms of visual and olfactory signal amplification, physical damage by bears to the trees might have a function to enhance the smell as a result of increase in outflow of the resin. We conclude that tree rubbing behavior is associated with the mating season of brown bears and that the main purpose of this behavior is scent marking to communicate intraspecifically during the mating season.

ABSTRACT Postpartum behavior of maternal deer may be specific to species of deer and predators. We captured sympatric white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (O. hemionus eremicus) fawns from radiocollared adult females in 2004–2006 on rangelands of west central Texas, USA, where predators larger than bobcats (Lynx rufus) were absent. Our objective was to determine whether differences in postpartum antipredator behavior existed between deer species, and if so, examine efficacy of those strategies. We collected postpartum group cohesion data in 2004 and 2005 by using radiotelemetry and examined dead fawns for cause of mortality. During fawns' hider phase, <3 weeks postpartum, mule deer females kept fawns closer to themselves (95% CI = 39−66 m) and twins closer to each other (95% CI = 25–49 m) than did white-tailed deer females (95% CIs = 152–234 m and 163–255 m, respectively). After 30 days postpartum, familial group cohesion was similarly tight for both species. During hider phases from 2004 to 2006, predated carcasses of white-tailed deer fawns (11 of 11) were dismembered or consumed more than mule deer fawns (7 of 13, P = 0.016), which was one line of evidence for maternal defense by mule deer adults. During hider phases in 2004 and 2005, predation rate of mule deer fawns was lower than that for white-tailed deer fawns. In 2006, predation rate increased for mule deer but was similar for white-tailed deer fawns compared with previous years. The tight cohesion strategy of mule deer exhibited in 2004 and 2005 seemed successful at thwarting small predators. Without large predators, the loose cohesion strategy of white-tailed deer females was maladaptive. When meso-predators are abundant due to extermination of larger predators, predation on fawns could increase if a deer species has relatively fixed postpartum maternal antipredator behavior.

Assisted reproductive techniques and fertility enhancing therapies have increased multiple births and, therefore, the risk of prematurity and its developmental consequences. Parent intervention is an effective source of compensation for the cognitive effects of prematurity. We hypothesized that relative to parents of preterm singletons, parents of preterm twins are less able to provide such enhancing care, resulting in a developmental disadvantage for preterm twins. Maternal-infant interactions of premature singletons (n = 22; birth weight = 1668 +/- 350 g, gestational age = 32.3 +/- 2.1 weeks) and premature twins (n = 8; birth weight = 1618 +/- 249 g; gestational age = 32.0 +/- 2.6 weeks) with comparable demographic and medical status were observed at home at 1 and 8 months corrected age using a 30 min checklist of developmentally facilitative behavior. Mental (MDI) and psychomotor (PDI) indices of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and Caldwell Home Observations for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) inventories were administered (18 months corrected age). Compared with mothers of premature singletons, mothers of premature twins exhibited fewer initiatives (P < 0.001) and responses (P < 0.01) and were less responsive to positive signals (P < 0.01) and crying (P < 0.01). Unprompted by the infant, twin mothers lifted or held (P < 0.05), touched (P < 0.01), patted (P < 0.05) or talked (P < 0.01) less. Singleton MDIs surpassed twins (119.4 +/- 7.7 vs 103.6 +/- 7.7; P < 0.01). Maternal verbal behavior and the acceptance of child factor (HOME), both favoring singletons, correlated with MDI (R-square = 0.46, P < 0.0002). Mothers of premature twins exhibited fewer initiatives and responses toward offspring than did mothers of premature singletons. Maternal behavior was predictive of cognitive development.
