Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), cause serious economic damage to nectarines in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, British Columbia, Canada. We evaluated several sampling methods for western flower thrips for their precision and ability to predict general population trends. Beating of branches, flicking of buds, and visual estimation methods were not accurate for estimating numbers of thrips in nectarine buds. Thrips caught on sticky cards indicated general population trends, but were less efficient than collecting nectarine buds and counting thrips. Searching for thrips from buds in the field underestimated the density of both adults and larvae, and for adults, underestimated the proportion of the pale morph of western flower thrips. Dispersion patterns of thrips populations among orchards were either random or aggregated dependent on the development stage of the nectarine buds.  相似文献

Development of a control strategy for thrips attacking nectarine trees depends on an understanding of their phenology, distribution, and life history as related to characteristics of nectarine orchards. To this end, we compared the overwintering behavior, distribution, and abundance of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), among 11 nectarine orchards located in the dry central interior of British Columbia, Canada, during 1993 and 1994. Western flower thrips emerged from areas not previously used for agriculture (wild areas) and from within orchards before trees were out of dormancy. Flight of thrips within and around orchards peaked during early bud development, with a second major peak several weeks later after husk fall as the next generation emerged. Orchards protected from wild areas by other orchards had the lowest densities of thrips in buds. Density estimates of western flower thrips on trees were not affected by location of trees within orchards or buds within trees, but most thrips were found in the most developed buds on a tree at any one time. Thrips were not found within buds until petal was first visible on the buds. Larval feeding on buds at early petal fall resulted in serious surface russetting of fruit.  相似文献

Thrips were sampled from six nectarine orchards in the Dry Central Interior, British Columbia, Canada, between April and June 1993 using yellow sticky cards on posts spaced around the perimeter of each orchard. Although 12 identified species of thrips were captured, >90% of individuals were the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). The flight patterns and abundances of western flower thrips were compared between orchards located in two differently oriented valleys (N-S and E-W) and between orchards located close to or far from areas of wild land. Results indicate that densities of western flower thrips entering orchards, and their direction of movement, were related more to the external vegetation than either location within the two different valleys or general wind flow patterns. Western flower thrips tended to move into orchards close to ground level in early spring (late April and early May) but flew higher as ground cover grew taller and temperatures increased. Densities of western flower thrips at ground level were highest in an orchard with the densest dandelion ground cover. We conclude that the location of nectarine orchards in relation to wild areas is a major determinate of western flower thrips densities.  相似文献

Low, medium and high densities of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), were established in three greenhouses at the Greenhouse and Processing Crops Research Centre, Ontario, Canada, in 1996 and 1998 to develop economic injury levels for thrips on greenhouse cucumber. Thrips densities were monitored weekly using yellow sticky traps and flower counts. Fruit was harvested twice a week, graded for size, weighed, and rated for thrips damage using three damage categories. Significant yield reduction was detected 4 wk after severe fruit damage was observed in the high and medium thrips density treatments in 1996 and 7 wk in 1998. Percentage of severe damaged fruit (P(F3)) has significant linear relationships with the adult thrips density (x) that was sampled by sticky traps 1 wk before harvest (P(F3) = -0.2533 + 0.0828x) and that was sampled by flower counts 2 wk before harvest (P(F3) = -0.2025 + 0.5490x). Based on the regression equations, economic injury levels, expressed as adult thrips per sticky trap per day or adult thrips per flower, were calculated for various combinations of control costs, yield potential and fruit prices. The economic injury levels for F. occidentalis ranged from 20 to 50 adults per sticky trap per day or 3 to 7.5 per flower as determined under average greenhouse production conditions in Ontario, Canada.  相似文献

This study was conducted to develop economic thresholds of western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) for unripe red pepper in greenhouses. To investigate the relationship between the density of thrips and resulting damages, experimental plots with five treatments (0, 4, 16, 48, 96 adults per plot) as initial release densities were established at the National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, Suwon, Korea, in 2004. Western flower thrips density was monitored using flower samplings and yellow sticky trap (8×13 cm) counts. Western flower thrips density was directly related to increased numbers of damaged fruits and reduced fruit yield. The number of marketable fruits produced decreased as the thrips densities increased. The major damage to pepper fruits caused by thrips was cosmetic scars that resulted from immature feeding. When flower samples or yellow trap caches were used to determine the density of thrips, which were collected on a previous sampling date, thrips densities were determined to be related to the percentage of fruits that were damaged, and a significant relationship was found for the flower samples (y = 0.3219x + 1.0792, r2 = 0.8640 and for trap catches (y = 11.9209 log(x) −2.158, r2 = 0.8306). The economically-tolerable ratio of damaged fruits based on control cost and market values under current greenhouse cultivation was estimated as 3.4 to 8.0%. Economic thresholds of western flower thrips ranged from 0.7 to 2.1 adults or nymphs per flower, and 2.3 to 5.7 adults per four-day sticky card count.  相似文献

Abstract  The relationship between western flower thrips (WFT) populations in flowers and catches on yellow sticky traps was investigated in a hydroponic strawberry crop in the Sydney area in 1999–2000. The thrips population was initially dominated by males, but by mid-summer it was composed primarily of females. At a point when approximately 60–65% of WFT on traps were female (approximately 20–30 females per trap), the overall density of thrips on traps and in the crop increased rapidly, resulting in severe damage to immature fruit. The sex ratio of 0.60–0.65 females corresponded very closely to a mean of five adult WFT per flower at the start of the trapping week, which was an infestation level previously calculated as the action threshold to prevent damage to young green fruit.  相似文献

The western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a cosmopolitan, polyphagous insect pest that causes bronzing to fruit of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa). The main aim of this study was to test whether mass trapping could reduce damage and to predict whether this approach would be economically viable. In semi-protected strawberry crops, mass trapping of F. occidentalis using blue sticky roller traps reduced adult thrips numbers per flower by 61% and fruit bronzing by 55%. The addition of the F. occidentalis aggregation pheromone, neryl (S)-2-methylbutanoate, to the traps doubled the trap catch, reduced adult thrips numbers per flower by 73% and fruit bronzing by 68%. The factors affecting trapping efficiency through the season are discussed. Damage that would result in downgrading of fruit to a cheaper price occurred when bronzing affected about 10% of the red fruit surface. Cost-benefit analysis using this threshold showed that mass trapping of thrips using blue sticky roller traps can be cost-effective in high-value crops. The addition of blue sticky roller traps to an integrated pest management programme maintained thrips numbers below the damage threshold and increased grower returns by a conservative estimate of £2.2k per hectare. Further work is required to develop the F. occidentalis aggregation pheromone for mass trapping and to determine the best timing for trap deployment. Mass trapping of thrips is likely to be cost-effective in other countries and other high-value crops affected by F. occidentalis damage, such as cucumber and cut flowers.  相似文献

Thrips palmi Karny has recently been implicated in damage to eggplant fruits. This thrips causes cosmetic scars on and deforms fruits, thus lowering their market value. To investigate the relationship between the density of thrips and the resulting damage, experimental plots with initial release densities of 0, 20, 40, 70, and 100 adults thrips per plot were established under greenhouse conditions. Thrips density (for flower sampling = x 1; for sticky trap = x 2) was monitored using flower sampling and blue sticky trap counts, and was found to be directly related to the proportion of damaged-fruits (y) and the reduction in fruit yield: significant relationships were found for the flower samples (y = 1.2261x 1 ? 0.6232, r 2 = 0.8582) and for the trap catches (y = 11.667 ln(x 2) ? 9.5, r 2 = 0.8896). The proportion of damaged fruits that could be tolerated from an economic perspective, based on the cost of controlling the thrips population chemically and the market value of the fruit, was 6.67–11.76 %; this translated into economic thresholds of 1.05–1.5 adults and/or larvae of T. palmi per flower or 4.91–10.17 adults T. palmi per four-day sticky card count.  相似文献

Abstract:   Hourly flight patterns of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysan., Thripidae) were assessed over a 24 h period in two nectarine orchards located in the Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, on 13 separate occasions between March and October 1994. The numbers of western flower thrips (male or female, dark or pale morphs) trapped per hour at between four to eight heights (0.25–2.00 m) were compared with temperature, wind speed, time of year and location of trap placement. Traps were placed within orchards, at the border of orchards and adjacent wild land, and within wildlands. Temperature and wind speed thresholds are defined, although the effect of wind speed varied with height of flight. Height of flight was affected by both the height of prevalent vegetation and temperature, with mean height of flight increasing linearly with temperature. Numbers of thrips in flight decreased with height of sticky trap from the ground. The pale morph was generally more common than the dark morph of western flower thrips. Males were not present until after emergence of the first generation in May, and were found at an approximate ratio of 4 : 1 (F : M) for the rest of the year. There were no differences between sexes or morphs of western flower thrips for location, height or daily patterns of flight.

The presence or absence of greenhouse whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, and thrips, primarily western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), in cells of a grid laid over 7.6 cm by 12.7 cm sticky traps was used to estimate the population density of these pests on the trap. The method accurately predicted trap population densities of between 15 and 192 individuals per side for thrips on blue and yellow traps and between 15 and 168 whiteflies per side on yellow traps. The distribution of both whiteflies and thrips tended to be clustered on the sides and upper edge of the traps. The method is useful in giving a far more rapid estimate than counting individuals, particularly at high population densities.  相似文献

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) (western flower thrips, WFT) is a key pest in a range of crops worldwide. Anthocorid species (Hemiptera) are important natural enemies of thrips. Several experiments were undertaken to determine whether a thrips lure, methyl isonicotinate (MI), affected the behaviour of WFT and anthocorids found in outdoor crops. Currently, this volatile compound is used in conjunction with sticky traps for monitoring thrips predominantly in greenhouses in Northern Europe. In the present study, in a nectarine [Prunus persica (L.) (Rosaceae)] orchard and an outdoor capsicum [Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae)] crop in Spain, blue sticky and white water traps with MI caught significantly more WFT than traps without MI. The volatile compound also significantly increased both blue sticky and white water trap capture of anthocorids – predominantly Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) – in the capsicum crop. These results indicate that the behaviour of both WFT and O. laevigatus were altered by the presence of the compound and suggest there is potential to develop novel tools based on MI in conjunction with biological control strategies for thrips management.  相似文献

UV‐absorbing films and nets are frequently used as covering materials for netted greenhouses and film tunnels in protected cultivation systems. This study explored the effects of such materials on the dispersal behaviour of western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis, in flight cages under greenhouse conditions with additional artificial UV‐A light sources. The study involved release–recapture experiments in choice and no‐choice layouts. Different trapping methods were compared (blue sticky cards, plants and transparent cards) for recapture of thrips. In choice experiments, insects were released from a black box compartment between two tunnels covered with either UV‐transmitting or UV‐absorbing materials. A significantly higher proportion of (82–98%) WFT was recaptured in UV‐transmitting tunnels compared with UV‐absorbing tunnels. In no‐choice experiments, WFT were found to infiltrate the tunnels at different rates depending on the trap type used and experimental layout. In small‐scale dispersal experiments using blue sticky cards and plants as traps, infiltration was not significantly different between UV‐absorbing and UV‐transmitting tunnels, whereas when using transparent cards, WFT penetrated further into the UV‐transmitting plastic film tunnels. In larger‐scale dispersal experiments, plants or blue sticky cards were arranged in concentric circles around a source plant at the release point. Dispersal was found to differ depending on the method of release, but WFT tended to exhibit reduced dispersal from source plants under UV‐deficient conditions. In conclusion, our data support the hypothesis that manipulation of spectral light properties using UV‐absorbing cladding materials for protected crop stands interferes with the orientation and host finding of WFT, resulting in reduced dispersal into and within plant stands in UV‐deficient environments.  相似文献

Abstract  Management of thrips in a hydroponic strawberry crop near Sydney, New South Wales, was studied from 1999 to 2002. The main species present were western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), plague thrips, Thrips imaginis Bagnall, and, occasionally, onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman. Their within- and between-plant distribution and the degree and type of damage caused are described, and used to recommend action thresholds. Flowers are identified as the primary monitoring site, and young green fruit as the key damage site. Action thresholds of approximately 45% of flowers with 5 or more adult western flower thrips, or 40% of flowers with 10 or more adult plague thrips are recommended. Alternative thresholds using all motile stages are given for flowers, and for young green and red berries. A higher tolerance is recommended during cool, wet periods.  相似文献

The predacious mite,Euseius addoensis addoensis (McMurtry) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), significantly (P<0.05) reduced scarring on Palmer Navel oranges,Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, caused by the citrus thrips,Scirtothrips aurantii Faure (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). A chemical exclusion method employing dicofol was used to determine the effect of the predator and numbers ofS. aurantii were monitored on sticky yellow traps. At two sites where numbers of citrus thrips and predacious mites were high, the percentage fruit culled from export quality due to damage byS. aurantii was reduced from 25.5 to 15.5% and from 32.7 to 18.7% by predacious mite activity.Euseius a. addoensis sometimes prevented damage from exceeding 1% cull and was most effective when mean numbers exceeded one mite per inside leaf at petal fall. The best correlation between numbers of mites and the percentage fruit culled at harvest was –0.96 at the location with the highest number of citrus thrips. Tartar emetic (0.398% a.i.) plus sugar (0.4% a.i.) treatments for citrus thrips were slightly detrimental toE. a. addoensis populations but their numbers soon recovered. An alternative treatment, methiocarb 0.016% a.i. plus sugar (0.4% a.i.), almost eliminated the predacious mites and resulted in more citrus thrips damage (10.7% cull) than in the adjacent untreated control (0.2% cull) which contained predacious mites.  相似文献

In greenhouse studies, we evaluated a commercial formulation of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae and the inoculative release of the thrips-parasitic nematode Thripinema nicklewoodi against western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande infesting potted chrysanthemums. Foliar sprays of S. feltiae applied at 1.25-2.5×103 IJ mL-1 and 1000 - 2000 L ha-1 at 3-day intervals alone (targeting feeding stages) or in combination with soil applications (simultaneously treating non-feeding stages in the soil at the same rates) decreased but did not provide adequate control of thrips in flowering plants artificially infested with a dense population. Similar nematode treatments applied for four to five applications at 6-day intervals in two batches of initially clean chrysanthemums failed to prevent unacceptable damage to flowers and leaves from a dense natural infestation within the greenhouse. Although some IJ survived up to 48 h within flowers and flower buds, few nematode-infected thrips (larvae and adults) were recovered. In studies with T. nicklewoodi (which is not amenable for mass production), the inoculative releases of two parasitized hosts per plant enabled the nematode to become established within existing WFT populations under greenhouse conditions. However, relatively poor transmission and slow speed of kill (nematode primarily suppresses populations through host sterilization) prevented low level inoculations being effective over a single crop cycle. Further studies showed that transmission of T. nicklewoodi persisted for nine host generations, infected up to 83% of adult thrips and provided long-term suppression of discrete caged populations, but only after uneconomically high thrips densities had been reached.  相似文献

The test on the preference of Thrips palmi to eight color sticky cards was carried out in an eggplant field. The thrip had the strongest preference to blue sticky card (P<0.01), and its preference order to the other 7 color cards was as follows: blue, turguoise, yellow, deep blue, green, orange, red and black. Results on the trapping effect of blue sticky card from east, south, west and north directions show that most thrips were trapped from the north, which existed a significant difference with those from the other three directions (P<0.05). Five blue sticky cards were set up at the heights of 73.9,101.7,129.5,157.3 and 185.1 cm above the ground to trap thrips, when the average height of eggplant was approximately 70 cm. More thrips were trapped of 73.9 and 101.7 cm height, which existed significant difference with those at the other three heights. During 5 continuous 3 hour spans from 5 am to 8 pm, the numbers of female, male and total adult thrips trapped were not significantly different.  相似文献

Two species of leafrollers, Argyrotaenia citrana (Fernald) and Pandemis pyrusana Kearfott, represent serious obstacles to the implementation of mating disruption for control of codling moth in coastal California apple orchards. Larval and adult densities of A. citrana and P. pyrusana and subsequent fruit damage were compared under different codling moth control treatments. Leafroller larval counts and levels of fruit damage were significantly higher in most plots that were untreated or treated only with codling moth pheromone. Leafroller fruit damage levels in these plots were commonly between 10 and 15% at harvest. As summer larval counts were good predictors of fruit damage levels, larval sampling could be a useful tool for predicting leafroller outbreaks. Use of pheromone trapping for A. citrana to detect localized outbreaks within an orchard was not useful and failed to correlate with larval numbers, whereas adult monitoring for P. pyrusana appears more promising. Efforts to implement a codling moth mating-disruption program in California must include changes in strategies for monitoring and controlling leafroller species.  相似文献

The development of cost-effective and reliable sampling programs for the management of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), on greenhouse cucumbers is important for getting growers to adopt economic injury levels and economic thresholds. The objectives of this study were to develop two sequential sampling plans. A fixed-precision sequential sampling plan was designed for estimating F. occidentalis adult density at a fixed-precision level on cucumber flowers. Also, a sequential sampling plan for classifying thrips population levels as below or above economic thresholds was developed to assist in decision making for the timing of pesticide applications. Both sequential sampling plans were validated using a resampling simulation technique on nine independent data sets ranging in density from 1.25 to 12.95 adults per flower. With the fixed-precision sampling plan, average means obtained in 100 repeated simulation runs were within the 95% CI of the estimated mean for all data sets. Appropriate levels of precision for the different population densities were recommended based on the simulation results. With sequential sampling for classifying the population levels of thrips in terms of an economic threshold, it has the advantage of requiring smaller sample sizes to determine the population status when the population densities differ greatly from the critical density (i.e., economic threshold). However, this plan needs a great number of samples when population density is close to the critical density. In this case, use of a combination of both sampling plans is recommended.  相似文献
