Honeybees (Apis mellifera) have haplodiploid sex determination: males develop from unfertilized eggs and females develop from fertilized ones. The differences in larval food also determine the development of females. Here we compared the total somatic gene expression profiles of 2-day and 4-day-old drone, queen and worker larvae by RNASeq. The results from a co-expression network analysis on all expressed genes showed that 2-day-old drone and worker larvae were closer in gene expression profiles than 2-day-old queen larvae. This indicated that for young larvae (2-day-old) environmental factors such as larval diet have a greater effect on gene expression profiles than ploidy or sex determination. Drones had the most distinct gene expression profiles at the 4-day larval stage, suggesting that haploidy, or sex dramatically affects the gene expression of honeybee larvae. Drone larvae showed fewer differences in gene expression profiles at the 2-day and 4-day time points than the worker and queen larval comparisons (598 against 1190 and 1181), suggesting a different pattern of gene expression regulation during the larval development of haploid males compared to diploid females. This study indicates that early in development the queen caste has the most distinct gene expression profile, perhaps reflecting the very rapid growth and morphological specialization of this caste compared to workers and drones. Later in development the haploid male drones have the most distinct gene expression profile, perhaps reflecting the influence of ploidy or sex determination on gene expression.  相似文献

In social insects, workers of different morphological castes and age are known to act differently. Yet, it is unclear how body size and ovarian development influence worker personalities (i.e. consistent behavioral variation) and task allocation in similar aged ant workers of monomorphic species. Behavioral variation is thought to be a key element of division of labor, but few studies have linked worker personality to task allocation. We investigated individual behavior in Leptothorax acervorum ant workers at two time points during the first three months of their life and in two different settings. We observed worker behavior in the nest (i.e. task allocation) and in standardized aggression, exploration and brood care experiments (i.e. personality) and found behavioral repeatability in foraging and exploration. Further, workers acted consistently across settings: workers with a more ag gressive and exploratory personality type were more active in the nest. Moreover, ovarian development was associated with worker personality and task allocation: older workers with welldeveloped ovaries foraged less, but were more aggressive and exploratory. In accordance with the typical agepolyethism of social insects, workers became more active and foraged more as they grew older. Consequently, our study suggests that task allocation in Leptothorax acervorum is not only influenced by ovari an development and age, but moreover by the personalities of its workers .  相似文献

Most porcine oocytes used in studies on embryo biotechnology and the in vitro production of embryos are currently obtained from the ovaries of slaughtered gilts. The duration and temperature during ovary transportation and handling might, therefore, affect the recovery of culturable COCs, chromatin configuration and developmental competence of oocytes. The effects of ovary storage temperature on chromatin configuration and in vitro maturation of porcine oocytes were examined in this study. Ovaries collected from a slaughterhouse were stored in vitro for 8 h under different temperatures. The results showed that more culturable COCs were isolated from the ovares stored at 39℃ than that from ovaries stored at 31℃ or 20℃ and before storage. Thirty-one centidegree was the best storage temperature in terms of cumulus expansion, nuclear maturation and morphology of the first polar body after in vitro maturation culture. The ability of cumulus expansion was completely lost in COCs derived from ovaries stored at 39℃ for 8 hours. Ovary storage (at both 31℃ and at 20℃ ) increased the proportion of oocytes with the GVc configuration in which chromatin condensed into a single big clump at the nucleolus and the functional significance of this configuration needs further investigations [ Acta Zoologica Sinica 51 (5): 919 923, 2005].  相似文献

Development, survivorship, pupal weight, oviposition, and life table parameters of the oriental tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta Guenée, were evaluated in the laboratory on an artificial diet, pepper (Capsicumfrutescens L.), and tobacco (Nicotiana tobacum L.). We found that the average developmental time of immature stages was longest on tobacco (36.2 d), intermediate on pepper (34.4 d), and shortest on artificial diet (33.5 d). Immature survival from egg to pupa varied from 31% on tobacco, 43% on pepper, and 74% on artificial diet. Pupal weight ranged from 197.4 mg/pupa on tobacco, 233.1 mg/pupa on pepper and 253.4 mg/pupa on artificial diet. The average numbers of eggs laid by adults reared as larvae on the artificial diet, pepper, or tobacco were 614, 421 and 334 eggs/female, respectively. Numbers of remaining eggs in ovaries of the adult females reared as larvae on the artificial diet, pepper, or tobacco were 16, 26, and 42 eggs/female, respectively. The longevity of adult females developed from larvae reared on the three diets was not significantly different, whereas the longevity of male adults from the larvae reared on artificial diet was longer (16.8 d) than that for males reared on tobacco (13.8 d) and pepper (13.3 d). The intrinsic, finite, gross, and net rates of increase were highest for females reared as larvae on artificial diet, lowest for females emerging from larvae reared on tobacco, and intermediate for females emerging from larvae reared on pepper. Generation times and doubling time of H. assulta were shortest for larvae fed artificial diet, intermediate from larvae reared on pepper, and longest from larvae reared on tobacco. We concluded that the artificial diet was the most suitable larval diet ofH. assulta followed by pepper, and tobacco.  相似文献

Inclusive fitness benefits depend on recognizing the right individuals to interact with. Social insect nests protect themselves from non-kin intruders through nestmate recognition based on chemical cues. The recognition cues on adult individu- als are from a mixture of genetic and environmental sources, but the ontogeny and use of recognition cues on eggs has not been previously assessed. We studied recognition by workers of eggs that were either nestmates or non-nestmates, and the ontogeny of recognition cues on eggs in the ant Formica fusca, a species with precise egg recognition abilities. Workers were able to dis- criminate among freshly laid eggs with no nest derived cues on them, and the egg surface chemicals varied among nests in these eggs, suggesting that queen derived cues are used in nestmate recognition. The results are discussed in the light of their implica- tions on deceptive social parasite strategies and within colony conflicts  相似文献

Maturation process of zebrafish oocyte was investigated using in vitro incubation. In medium EM-199 containing 0.5 μg/ml of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone incubated under 80% O_2 and at 25°C,germinal vesicles(GV)of oocytes in stage Ⅳ migrated from midway between the center and theperiphery ofoocytes to the periphery in 40 minutes and the oocytes went into stage V.Half an hourlater, the oocytes underwent germinel vesicle breakdown(GVBD)with a breakdown rate of 59%.Two more hours were needed for such oocytes to complete their final maturation. The mature eggscould not come off from the follicle layer surrounding them by themselves(ovulation).By removingthe follicle and adding active sperms for insemination,we could make the mature eggs fertilized.Thechorion was elevated and blastoderm formed on the animal pole. The cleavage and development ofthese fertilized eggs followed the same course as the naturally matured and fertilized eggs.Usingblastula formation as a marker of successful fertilization of the in vitro matured egg,the fertilizationrate was 78%.This is the first report on the successful in vitro incubation of mature oocytes inzebrafish. The establishment of this in vitro oocyte maturation technology has laid the foundationfor further investigation of the transfer of foreign genes in the germinal vesicles of oocytes.  相似文献

Presence of amino acid neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu) in ant brains was reported in very few studies. To learn more about factors influencing GABA and Glu levels in ant brains, we applied high-performance liquid chromatography to measure levels of these compounds in single brains of workers of 2 ant species, Myrmica ruginodis (subfamily Myrmicinae) and Formica polyctena (subfamily Formicinae) taken from queenright/queenless colony fragments and tested in dyadic aggression tests consisting of an encounter with a nestrnate, an alien conspecific or a small cricket. Brain glutamate levels were higher than those of GABA in both tested species. Brain GABA levels (in μmol/brain) and GABA : Glu ratio were higher in M. ruginodis (a submissive species) than in E polyctena (a dominant, aggressive species) in spite of smaller brain weight of M. ruginodis. Brain glutamate levels (in μmol/brain) did not differ between the tested species, which implies that glutamate concentration (in μmol/mg of brain tissue) was higher in M. ruginodis. Queen absence was associated with increased worker brain GABA levels in E polyctena, but not in M. ruginodis. No significant effects of opponent type were discovered. As GABA agonists enhance friendly social behavior in rodents, we hypothesize that elevated brain GABA levels of orphaned workers of F.polyctena facilitate the adoption of a new queen. This is the first report providing information on GABA and glutamate levels in single ant brains and documenting the effects of queen presence/absence on brain levels of amino acid neurotransmitters in workers of social Hymenoptera.  相似文献

中国南方海域鲎的种类和分布   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The northern sea area of the South China Sea is situated between 107.5°~122.5°East longitude and 17°~25° North latitude with high temperature and a large quantity of rainfall which belongs to the oceanic climate of the torrid zone and subtropical zone. From September, 1994 to June, 1998,during the research on the species of Horseshoe crab within the scope between the south from North gulf and the north to Xiamen, choosing Xiamen, Shantou, Wuchuan, Donghaidao and Qishui as fixed positions and irregularly going to Xuwen and Suixi in Guangdong province and Fangcheng in Guangxi province, we found that there was only Tachypleus tridentatus in the northern sea area of the South China Sea and the sea area from Wuchuan to Xiamen, and found that there were two species of horseshoe crab which were Tachypleus tridentatus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda in the southern area to East Sea Island, referring to East Sea Island, Qishui, Xuwen, Suixi and Fangcheng, most of which were Tachypleus tridentatus, and found a great number of larvae of Tachypleus tridentatus including zooids with different sizes from 7cm bodily length to mature. In Minan we found not only big colonies of adult Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda , but also a great number of larvae of Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda with different body size from 7cm body length to maturity. All these show that the northern sea area of the South China Sea is the area where both Tachypleus tridentatus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda distribute and reproduce. On January 1st, 1998 at the town of Qishui in Leizhou, we found an adult male Horseshoe crab and majority of its eggs was immature, while the eggs with above 4mm diameters were only 0.87 percent but the eggs with below 1.0mm diameter was 58 percent(1 160 pills). It shows that Qishui is a place where Tachyplers tridentatus survive in the winter.  相似文献

In order to understand the composition and quantitative variation of ecdysteriods in the adults and eggs of Opogona sacchari (Bojer), an invasive alien pest, we analyzed the ecdysteroid composition and titers in the adult and egg of this pest. On day 4 after eclosion, the titer of ecdysteriods in the male adult was 0.080 ng/adult, much lower than 5.978 ng/adult in the female adult. During the development of ovaries, the titer of ecdysteriods was low on the first two days, and high in the late period, with the peak (10.48 ng/ovary) appearing on day 3. During the development of eggs, the titer of ecdysteriods was about 0.010 ng/egg from day 1 to day 3, and then decreased to 0.006 ng/egg on day 4. In both adults and eggs, three main components of ecdysteriods were found by identification of HPLC/RIA. They were 20-hydroxyecdysone, 26-hydroxyecdysone, and an unidentified component.  相似文献

Fruit flies usually harbor diverse communities of bacteria in their digestive systems, which are known to play a significant role in their fitness. However, little information is available on Zeugodacus tau,a polyphagous pest worldwide. This study reports the first extensive analysis of bacterial communities in different life stages and their effect on the development and reproduction of laboratory-reared Z tan.Cultured bacteria were identified using the conventional method and all bacteria were identified by highthroughput technologies(16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing of V3-V4 region).A total of six bacterial phyla were identified in larvae, pupae, and male and female adult flies, which were distributed into 14 classes,32 orders,58 families and 96 genera.Proteobacteria was the most represented phylum in all the stages except larvae.Enterobacter,Klebsiella,Providencia, and Pseudomonas were identified by conventional and next-generation sequencing analysis in both male and female adult flies, and Enterobacter was found to be the main genus. After being fed with antibiotics from the first instar larvae, bacterial diversity changed markedly in the adult stage.Untreated flies laid eggs and needed 20 days before oviposition while the treated flies showed ovary development inhibited and were not able to lay eggs, probably due to the alteration of the microbiota. These findings provide the cornerstone for unexplored research on bacterial function in Z tau, which will help to develop an environmentally friendly management technique for this kind of harmful insect.  相似文献

Summary In queenright colonies of Apis mellifera, worker policing normally eliminates worker-laid eggs thereby preventing worker reproduction. However, in queenless colonies that have failed to rear a replacement queen, worker reproduction is normal. Worker policing is switched off, many workers have active ovaries and lay eggs, and the colony rears a last batch of male brood before dying out. Here we report a colony which, when hopelessly queenless, did not stop policing although a high proportion of workers had active ovaries (12.6%) and many eggs were laid. However, all these eggs and also worker-laid eggs transferred from another colony were policed. This unusual pattern was repeated eight weeks later by a second queenless colony made using worker bees from the same mother colony, which strongly suggests genetic determination.Received 19 May 2003; revised 11 September 2003; accepted 23 September 2003.  相似文献

Workers of many species of social Hymenoptera have functional ovaries and are capable of laying haploid, unfertilized eggs, at least in the absence of a queen. Except for honeybees, it remains largely unknown whether worker‐produced males have the same quality as queen‐produced males and whether workers benefit in direct fitness by producing their sons. Previous studies in the monogynous ant Temnothorax crassispinus revealed that a high proportion of males in natural and laboratory colonies are worker offspring. Here, we compare longevity, body size, sperm length and sperm viability between queen‐ and worker‐produced males. We either split queenright colonies into queenright and queenless halves or removed the queen from a fraction of the queenright colonies and then examined the newly produced males. Male quality traits varied considerably among colonies but differed only slightly between queen‐ and worker‐produced males. Worker‐produced males outnumbered queen‐produced males and also had a longer lifespan, but under certain rearing conditions sperm from queen‐produced males had a higher viability.  相似文献

The truce between honey bee (Apis spp.) workers over reproduction is broken in the absence of their queen. Queenright workers generally abstain from personal reproduction, raising only the queen’s offspring. Queenless workers activate their ovaries, produce eggs, and reduce the rate at which they destroy worker-laid eggs, so that some eggs are reared to maturity. Reduced policing of worker-laid eggs renders queenless nests vulnerable to worker reproductive parasitism (WRP), and may result in the colony raising eggs of unrelated (non-natal) workers that parasitize it. Queenless colonies of A. florea are heavily parasitized with the eggs of non-natal workers. However, queenless colonies often abscond upon disturbance and build a small comb in which to rear their own male offspring. We investigated three naturally occurring orphaned colonies to determine if they are also parasitized. We show that WRP is present in orphaned colonies, and non-natal workers have significantly higher rates of ovary activation than natal workers. In contrast to experimentally manipulated colonies, in our samples, natal and non-natal workers had statistically equal reproductive success, but this may have been due to the small number of non-natals present.  相似文献

Summary. In social Hymenoptera worker policing that inhibits direct reproduction of workers occurs mainly in the two ways: (1) destruction of worker progenies (postovipositional policing), and (2) aggression towards ovary-developed workers (preovipositional policing). In the queenless ponerine ant, Diacamma sp. from Japan, the existence of the former type of worker policing has been reported, whereas previous studies have failed to find the latter type. We examine the presence of the latter type of worker policing in this species using more careful observational methods. By a series of experiments reuniting previously separated orphaned and non-orphaned subcolonies we found the following facts. Immediately after the colony reunification, aggression frequently took place. Unlike the one-on-one dominance interaction that occurs in non-manipulated colonies, aggression was often directed towards a single victim from multiple attackers, grasping and pulling the victim. The duration of each aggressive interaction was on average far longer in this situation than that of usual dominance interactions. Most victims consisted of ex-orphan workers, while the majority of the attackers were ex-non-orphan workers. Dissection after the above behavioral observation revealed that the ovaries of the victims were on average more active, often containing mature oocytes, than those of non-victims, while the ovaries of attackers were always inactive. The above findings indicate that worker policing via immobilization, which has been reported in some other Ponerinae, also exists in Diacamma sp. from Japan.Received 22 April 2003; revised 28 June and 19 August 2004; accepted 1 September 2004.  相似文献

Summary. Queens of leafcutter ants (Acromyrmex and Atta) are highly multiply mated, resulting in a potential queenworker and worker-worker conflict over who should produce the males in the colony. We studied whether this conflict is expressed, by determining the amount of reproductive egg-laying by workers in queenright colonies of Acromyrmex echinatior, Acromyrmex octospinosus, Atta cephalotes, and Atta sexdens through ovary dissections. Worker sons are absent or rare in queenright Acromyrmex colonies, but can be produced in orphaned colonies. In Atta, most workers have rudimentary ovaries that never produce eggs, but a few (mostly small and medium workers that form a retinue around the queen) lay many trophic eggs for consumption by the queen. These eggs are large, flaccid, and lacking in yolk compared to queen-laid eggs, and appear to be always inviable. In Acromyrmex, many workers (especially young large workers) lay eggs that are similar in size to queen-laid eggs, but mostly with a reduced amount of yolk. Trophic eggs appear to be an important source of food for larvae in Acromyrmex (especially in Ac. echinatior), but not in Atta. Five (0.8) of 616 dissected Ac. echinatior workers but no Ac. octospinosus workers (n = 552), had ready-to-lay reproductive eggs. Old workers in all four species are incapable of laying eggs due to ovary resorption. We conclude that Atta workers are sterile, while Acromyrmex workers display reproductive self-restraint, possibly representing an earlier stage in the evolution towards worker sterility. Worker selfrestraint in Acromyrmex may be maintained by a queen or worker policing mechanism, but individual cost-benefit explanations may also apply.Received 1 March 2004; revised 28 June 2004; accepted 1 July 2004.  相似文献

Summary. Workers of most eusocial Hymenoptera can produce sons after queen loss, which (posthumously) benefits the queen and increases worker inclusive fitness. However, the evolutionary loss of worker ovaries has occurred in several lineages, while workers in other taxa may be infertile despite having ovaries. Workers of Atta leafcutter ants only lay trophic eggs in queenright colonies. Although Atta colonies are commonly kept at universities, museums, and zoos, no reports of worker sons in orphaned colonies exist, suggesting that Atta workers are infertile. To explicitly test this, we created eleven orphaned laboratory nests of Atta cephalotes, A. sexdens, and A. colombica, and maintained them for 3–6 months after queen loss. Eight colonies did not produce any brood, but three nests produced 1–4 worker-derived male larvae and pupae. Microsatellite genotyping indicated that these were worker sons. However, all males were tiny (3.5–9 mm long) compared to normal queen sons (16 mm long), and would almost certainly be unable to mate. We also found reproductive eggs, but most of these had no yolk and were thus inviable. We conclude that Atta workers are not completely infertile, but that worker fertility is low compared to the sister genus Acromyrmex, where workers routinely produce normally-size males after queen loss in the laboratory. We hypothesize that worker reproduction in orphaned Atta field colonies is almost never successful because the last workers die before their sons can be raised to adulthood, but that the importance of worker-laid trophic eggs for queen feeding has precluded the evolutionary loss of worker ovaries. Egg marking pheromones of anarchistic worker honeybees (Apis mellifera)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In honeybees, worker policing via egg eating enforces functionalworker sterility in colonies with a queen and brood. It is thoughtthat queens mark their eggs with a chemical signal, indicatingthat their eggs are queen-laid. Worker-laid eggs lack this signaland are, therefore, eaten by policing workers. Anarchistic workerhoneybees have been hypothesized to circumvent worker policingby mimicking the queen egg-marking signal. We investigated thisphenomenon by relating chemical profiles of workers and theireggs to egg acceptability. We found that the ability of someworkers (anarchistic workers in queenright colonies and deviantworkers from a queenless colony) to lay more acceptable eggsis due to them producing significant amounts of queen-like estersfrom their Dufour's gland. These esters appear to be transferredto eggs during laying and increase egg survival. However, theseesters cannot be the normal queen egg-marking signal, as theyare generally absent from queen-laid eggs and only increasethe short-term persistence of worker-laid eggs, because only7–30% of anarchistic worker-laid eggs persisted to hatchingversus 91–92% of queen-laid eggs. All workers can producesome esters, but only workers that greatly increase their esterproduction lay more acceptable eggs. The production of estersappears to be a flexible response, as anarchistic workers rearedin queenless colonies did not increase their ester production, while some deviant workers in queenless colonies did increasetheir ester production.  相似文献

Anarchistic honeybees result from extremely rare behavioural mutations which allow workers to lay eggs despite the presence of the queen. We investigated the behavioural development of bees derived from a line in which ca. 5% of workers have developed ovaries and lay viable eggs. Other than their developed ovaries and proclivity to lay eggs, the anarchistic workers we studied are apparently normal, performing normal worker-like behaviour. Unlike many laying workers in queenless colonies, they are not queen-like and are apparently not the objects of aggression. When day-old workers from anarchistic colonies were cross-fostered into anarchistic and wild-type host colonies, the frequency of ovary development was an order of magnitude higher in the anarchistic host (9.1%) than in the wild-type host (0.7%). This suggests that there is a policing mechanism that affects ovary development in honeybees. Thus, worker reproduction is probably suppressed at the level of ovary development as well as by oophagy of worker-laid eggs. Other mechanisms, such as aggression towards individuals with developed ovaries, may also exist, but we found no evidence for this.  相似文献

Kin selection theory predicts that honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers should largely refrain from producing their own offspring, as the workers collectively have higher inclusive fitness if they rear the sons of their mother, the queen. Studies that have quantified levels of ovary activation and reproduction among workers have largely supported this prediction. We sampled pre‐emergent male pupae and adult workers from seven colonies at regular intervals throughout the reproductive part of the season. We show that the overall contribution of workers to male (drone) production is 4.2%, nearly 40 times higher than is generally reported, and is highest during reproductive swarming, when an average of 6.2% of the males genotyped are worker‐produced. Similarly, workers in our samples were 100 times more likely to have active ovaries than previously assumed. Worker reproduction is seasonally influenced and peaks when colonies are rearing new queens. Not all worker subfamilies contribute equally to reproduction. Instead, certain subfamilies are massively over‐represented in drone brood. By laying eggs within the period in which many colonies produce virgin queens, these rare worker subfamilies increase their direct fitness via their well‐timed sons.  相似文献

Workers of the Florida harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex badius), the only North American Pogonomyrmex with a polymorphic worker caste, produce males when colonies are orphaned. In this study,we assessed the reproductive potential of workers of each caste group, minors and majors, in the presence and absence of the queen, and tested whether males produced in natural queen-right colonies are derived from workers. Worker size was positively correlated with ovariole number such that major workers had approximately double the number of ovarioles as minor workers. The number of vitellogenic oocytes, a measure of reproductive potential, was greater in major compared to minor workers and increased in both worker castes when queens were removed. Major workers have greater reproductive potential than minors although they represent a minority within the colony (~5% of workers are majors). Worker produced eggs were visible in colonies 28 – 35 days after queen removal. This time lag, from queen removal to egg production, is similar to other ants and bees. Though workers are capable of producing viable eggs, we found no evidence that they do so in queen-right colonies, suggesting that worker reproduction is controlled via some social mechanism (self restraint, policing, or inhibition). This result supports predictions of kin selection theory – that due to multiple mating by the queen workers are more related to queen-produced males than most worker-produced males and should thus favor reproduction by the queen and inhibit reproduction by other workers.
