Plants of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus(Thunb.) Matsum. &Nakai, cv. Early Yates] were grown for up to 3 months aftergermination in controlled environment cabinets, and variousaspects of vegetative growth and fruit development were measured.Effects of light intensity were studied by comparing growthat 8, 16 and 32 klx at constant temperature and daylength (25°C, 14 h). Effects of daylength were studied by comparing8, 14 and 24 h at constant light intensity and temperature (32klx, 25 °C), and effects of tem perature were studied bycomparing 20°, 25°, 30°, 35° and 40 °C atconstant light intensity and day- length (32 klx, 14 h). Withincreasing light intensity and daylength lateral growth waspromoted whereas main shoots were less affected. Increase intemperature above 25 °C resulted in longer main shoots andprolific lateral growth, due both to more and to longer laterals.Environmental differences had little effect on internode lengthbut did affect the size of basal leaves. However, an increasein total leaf area at higher temperatures or with Continuouslight was mainly due to more leaves rather than larger leaves.The presence of developing fruit greatly reduced vegetativegrowth of plants. Main shoot length, lateral growth, numberof leaves, and even size of individual leaves, were all reduced.This reduction did not apply to d. wt of whole plants. Fruitingplants were very efficient, on a leaf area basis, in accumulatingd. wt. At 25 °C at the two higher light intensities with14 h days the presence of one developing fruit was inhibitoryto the setting of any subsequent fruit. With short days or lowlight, more fruits were set but they were small. With continuouslight or high temperature more than one fruit could developand they were large.  相似文献

Karyotypes of 27 species in Leucadendron are analysed for the first time. New chromosome counts are reported for 15 species, with 2 n  = 26 occurring in all of them. Karyotype analysis indicated that chromosomes of Leucadendron taxa are small in size and have predominantly median to submedian centromeres. The mean sizes of somatic metaphase chromosomes ranged from 1.05 to 2.65 µm. Based on Stebbins' karyotype classification, 1A type was found in L. galpinii , L. muirii , L. orientale , L. platyspermum , L. rubrum , and L. salignum ; 2A type in L. conicum , L. flexuosum , L. laureolum , L. meridianum , L. salicifolium , L. stelligerum , and L. teretifolium ; and 2B type in L. argenteum , L. chamelaea , L. discolor , L. elimense , L. eucalyptifolium , L. floridum , L. gandogeri , L. linifolium , L. loeriense , L. macowanii , L. procerum , L. spissifolium , L. strobilinum , and L. tinctum . The morphology and anatomy of pollen presenters, styles andpollen of species ofBanksia, Dryandra, Hakea, IsopogonandMacadamiawerestudied. Serial sections of pistils and SEM images of pollenwere quantified to determine whether the low fertility observedin the Proteaceae has a structural basis. Pollen access to thestigma was investigated. There were three types of stigmaticcavity. A groove in which the stigmatic papillae were enclosedwas present inDryandra, BanksiaandHakea. Macadamiahad a groovewith protruding papillae, andIsopogonhad a tube which enclosedthe papillae. Anatomical studies showed the pollen presenterto be structurally complex but overall to have similar internalanatomy across the species studied. The species could be groupedaccording to presence or absence of transfer tissue and presenceor absence of sclerenchyma, but these groups were not mutuallyexclusive. In the pistil there were three structural filtersto pollen tube passage. The first was at the stigma, where pollengrain access could be limited by the diameter or length of thestigmatic groove or the capacity of the pollination chamberin relation to pollen volume. Floral cycling of the avocado cultivars Fuerte and Hass wasobserved under controlled conditions of 25 °C and daylengthsof 0 h, 1 h (08.00 h-09.00 h), 6 h (08.00 h-14.00 h), 6 h (13.00h-19.00 h), 12 h (08.00 h-20.00 h) and 24 h with a photon fluxdensity of 350 /imol m–2 s –1 (400–700 nm).Normal floral cycling of discrete opening periods of femalestage, followed by closed phase, followed by male stage, occurredunder all conditions except 24 h in Fuerte, and 0 h and 24 hin Hass. Under continuous light the cycle was disrupted andfemale and male stages opened throughout the day, and very fewHass flowers opened at all. No male stage Hass flowers openedunder continuous darkness. Under the shorter daylengths thefloral cycle was condensed, and the timing of the cycle shiftedfollowing alteration in the time of start of the light period.Emasculation of flowers in the female stage prevented reopeningduring the period of opening of the male stage flowers in Fuertebut not in Hass. Brassica oleracea pollen was applied to a basic medium of 1.5per cent agar and 15 per cent sucrose to which flavanoids wereadded at three concentrations. Two types of agar were used;with agar 1, quercetin at a concentration of 0.5 x 10–3per cent gave an increase in percentage germinating grains.With agar 2, an increase in germination occurred with kaempferoland naringin at concentrations of 0.5 x 10–3 and 0.5 x10–1 per cent respectively. Increase in pollen tube lengthoccurred with agar 2 and quercetin at a concentration of 0.5x 10–3 per cent. The stigma tissue of B. oleracea contains at least three andthe pollen at least one glycoside of quercetin. The sugars inthe glycosides were not identified. Pollen germination and pollentube extension were not stimulated exclusively by the flavanoidspresent in the stigma. The flavanoid composition of the stigmadid not vary amongst five different S-allele genotypes, indicatingthat flavanoids are probably not directly involved in the incompatibilityreaction of B. oleracea.  相似文献

Stigmas of A. wattsiana produced 1260 nl of secretion by 90min after pollination. The optimum temperature for post-pollinationsecretion in A. baileyana, A. brownii and A. iteaphylla was20°C. Both self and cross intraspecific, interspecific andintergeneric pollinations produced a similar positive responsein A. iteaphylla and A. baileyana. In all cases aged pollenwas as effective as fresh pollen despite reduced fluorescencein the fluorescein diacetate test. Live yeast cells, fixed chickenerythrocytes, glass beads, talc and Biogel P150 did not stimulatesecretion, nor did pollen which had been washed in water orethanol despite high retention of viability in some cases Pollendiffusates dried on to glass beads produced a positive responsein A. iteaphylla and A. gracifolia. Intraspecific and interspecificpollinations involving fresh Acacia pollen resulted in pollengermination on the stigma and pollen tube growth in the styleof A. iteaphylla and A. baileyana. The anatomy of abscissed avocado fruitlets of the Hass varietywas compared with that of actively growing control fruitletsto investigate the reason for abscission. Control fruitletshad a small embryo (4–14 cells) and numerous endospermcells by seven days after pollination. Cotyledon developmenthad commenced by 21 days and a root/shoot axis was present at28 days. Over 90 per cent of the fruitlets which abscissed during thefirst week after the end of flowering were unfertilized and18 per cent were abnormal. By the fourth week after the endof flowering all abscissed fruitlets were fertilized and noneabnormal. Abnormalities included ovaries with more than oneembryosac or ovule, with an immature embryo-sac, with an ovulein an abnormal position or with a deficiency in ovule structure.In a few fertilized abscissed fruitlets either the embryo orendosperm had ceased development first. In the majority of casesembryo and endosperm were anatomically normal. The majorityof fertilized abscissed fruitlets had reached a stage correspondingto 14 days after pollination of the control tree. Degenerationwas often observed in both unfertilized and fertilized abscissedfruitlets. It is suggested that this degeneration occurred inthe period between the cessation of development and abscissionof the fruit. This period was approximately one week. The proportion of abnormal ovaries was too low to significantlyaffect yields, and sufficient flowers had been fertilized togive an adequate crop. Secretion of the galactose-containing polysaccharide componentof the watermelon stigma exudate was studied using electronmicroscopy cytochemistry and autoradiography. Polysaccharidelocalization using the thiosemicarbazide–silver proteinatemethod stained the Golgi apparatus and secretory vesicles, thecell wall, wall thickenings and extracellular secretion. Thesame result was obtained at anthesis and at 18 h prior to anthesis,which coincides with the period of maximum secretion. Labellingof stigmas in vivo with D-(1-3H) galactose at 20 h prior toanthesis resulted in different labelling patterns after 2 h(18 h prior to anthesis) and 20 h (anthesis). At 18 h priorto anthesis label was present in the Golgi apparatus and secretoryvesicles, the cell wall and wall thickenings. By anthesis labelhad accumulated in the extracellular secretion in addition tothe Golgi apparatus, secretory vesicles, cell wall and wallthickenings. The results suggest that the polysaccharide componentof the stigma exudate is produced in the Golgi apparatus andsecreted via the cell wall and wall thickenings. The effects of light and temperature on flowering and pollentube growth were studied in watermelon [Citrullus lanatus(Thunb.)Matsum. and Nakai, cv. Early Yates] plants grown in controlledenvironment cabinets. All female flowers were pollinated inone group of plants; none was pollinated in the other group. Temperature increase from 25 °C to 35 °C with daylengthof 14 h and light intensity of 32 klx caused increase in flowernumber per plant, proportion of male flowers, ovary length anddiameter, ovule number per ovary, rate of pollen tube growthand percentage of penetrated ovules at 24 hand 48 h after pollination.Very few flowers were produced at 40 °C, but there was ahigh proportion of male flowers. Increase in daylength from14 h to 24 h at 25 °C with light intensity of 32 klx alsoincreased number of flowers per plant, ovary length and diameterand number of ovules per ovary but sex expression and rate ofpollen tube growth were unaffected. Reduction in daylength from14 h to 8 hat 25 °C and light intensity of 32 klx and reductionin light intensity from 32 klx to 8 klx at 25 °C and 14h daylength both produced an increase in the percentage of immatureovules. The presence of fruit on the vine resulted in fewerflowers per plant and in reduced ovary legnth and diameter underall conditions tested. The results are discussed in relation to the fruiting responseof the plant.  相似文献

Seedlings of Rangpur lime (Citrus reticulata var. austera hybrid?)and Etrog citron (C. medica) were treated in water culture with0, 25, 50 or 100 mol m–3 NaCl, and in sand culture with0 or 100 mol m–3 NaCl. Leaf chloride analyses indicatedthat Etrog citron accumulated the most chloride at all levelsof salinity. The structure, ultrastructure and concentrationsof chloride and reserve assimilates of the primary root up to50 mm back from the tip were compared between genotypes andbetween salt treatments. There were no differences in root anatomy in the absence ofsalt between the two genotypes. The hypodermal cells developedlignified and suberized walls which blocked the plasmodesmataand resulted in degeneration of the cell contents. Frequentthin-walled passage cells in the hypodermis had living contentsand may represent major sites of ion uptake into the symplasm,which was connected with the stele via plasmodesmatal connectionswith and between the cortical cells. The primary endodermalcells had lignified casparian strips and plasmodesmata in othercell wall areas. These connections were blocked by secondarysuberization of all except the endodermal passage cells oppositethe protoxylem arcs. Suberization of the hypodermis and endodermis and the appearanceof granular deposits in the vacuole occurred closer to the roottip of both genotypes after treatment with 100 mol m–3NaCl. Levels of starch and triglyceride in 10 mm serial segmentswere similar between roots of control and salt-treated plantsand increased with distance back from the root tip. Chlorideconcentrations increased with salt treatment but values (ona tissue water basis) were similar between genotypes and betweenthe apical and proximal ends of the root. Reducing sugar concentrationsdecreased with salt treatment to a similar extent in roots ofboth genotypes. Key words: Citrus, Roots, Salinity  相似文献
