Plants of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus(Thunb.) Matsum. &Nakai, cv. Early Yates] were grown for up to 3 months aftergermination in controlled environment cabinets, and variousaspects of vegetative growth and fruit development were measured.Effects of light intensity were studied by comparing growthat 8, 16 and 32 klx at constant temperature and daylength (25°C, 14 h). Effects of daylength were studied by comparing8, 14 and 24 h at constant light intensity and temperature (32klx, 25 °C), and effects of tem perature were studied bycomparing 20°, 25°, 30°, 35° and 40 °C atconstant light intensity and day- length (32 klx, 14 h). Withincreasing light intensity and daylength lateral growth waspromoted whereas main shoots were less affected. Increase intemperature above 25 °C resulted in longer main shoots andprolific lateral growth, due both to more and to longer laterals.Environmental differences had little effect on internode lengthbut did affect the size of basal leaves. However, an increasein total leaf area at higher temperatures or with Continuouslight was mainly due to more leaves rather than larger leaves. The presence of developing fruit greatly reduced vegetativegrowth of plants. Main shoot length, lateral growth, numberof leaves, and even size of individual leaves, were all reduced. This reduction did not apply to d. wt of whole plants. Fruitingplants were very efficient, on a leaf area basis, in accumulatingd. wt. At 25 °C at the two higher light intensities with14 h days the presence of one developing fruit was inhibitoryto the setting of any subsequent fruit. With short days or lowlight, more fruits were set but they were small. With continuouslight or high temperature more than one fruit could developand they were large.  相似文献

Pea cultivars capable of regularly producing more than two flowersper node were grown at temperatures ranging from 10 to 25 °C.There was positive correlation between flower number per nodeand air temperature. Genotypic variation in the size of thisresponse to temperature was observed. For example, those cultivarswitha mean of 3•0 flowers per node at 10 °C gave meansof 6•2, 5•7 and 3•5 at 25 °C. The concentrationof soluble sugars in the shoot at flower initiation was negativelycorrelated with air temperature and flower number per node.An increase in radiation intensity from 60 to 120 J m–2s–1 however, resulted in increased numbers of flowersper node. These environmental effects are contrasted with effectson cultivars regularly producing fewer than two flowers pernode and possible control mechanisms are indicated.  相似文献

Non-dormant flower initials are laid down in the axils of successiveleaf initials as they are formed by the apical meristem of Pisumsativum L. In cultivars with a maximum capability of two flowersper raceme, the undeveloped flower meristem divides into twoportions. One forms the first flower and the other either developsinto a small protrusion on one side of the first flower or becomesthe second flower, depending on the prevailing environment.Flower development in conditions favouring single-flowered racemeswas advanced by one plastochron. Variation in the number offlowers per raceme occurs between cultivars and between environments. The number of double flowers formed was favoured by higher lightintensity (120 Js–1 m–2) and carbon dioxide concentration(330 µ11) and lower temperature (15°C). Incultivars producing more than two flowers per raceme, lowerlight intensity (60 Js–1 m–2) plus higher temperature(20°C) increased the mean number of flowers per raceme.Soluble sugar levels in all varieties were higher (36.05 mgeq glucose g–1 fresh weight) in the low temperature/highlight environment than the high temperature/low light environment(14.80 mg eq glucose g–1 fresh weight). The flowering potential and stability of 13 cultivars have beenassessed in controlled environment and in sowing date trialsin the field. A stable variety, which consistently producedtwo flowers per raceme, was identified in controlled environmentand its stability was maintained in field trials. A linear regressionof stability of flower number in the field on stability in controlledenvironment accounted for 89.6 per cent of the variance (P<5per cent), but the flowering potential in a sowing date experimentwas not related to temperature or radiation intensity.  相似文献

The effect of heat stress on processes related to carbohydratepartitioning was investigated in young bell pepper (Capsicumannum L. cv. Maor) plants in relation to abscission of theirreproductive organs at different stages of development. None of the reproductive organs abscised after 5 d in a normalday/night temperature regime (25/18 °C). With a temperatureregime of 35 °C day, 25 °C night, abscission occurredin only a small portion of the flower buds and none of the flowersand fruitlets. However, when temperatures in the day and nightwere reversed (25/35 °C, day/night) all the buds and someof the flowers abscised during that time period. The young fruitat the first node did not abscise under any temperature regime. The abscission rate of the flower buds was reduced under heatstress if the developing fruit at the first node had been removed. High temperature during either the light or dark periods reducedthe export of [14C]sucrose from the source leaf (fed for 48h with [14C]sucrose). Both heat stress and fruit presence reduced the relative amountof [14C]sucrose which was exported to the flower buds, flowersand roots. Likewise, these treatments reduced the concentrationof reducing sugars in the reproductive organs. Concomitantly, the heat stress and fruit presence on the first node reducedthe activity of soluble acid invertase in the flower buds andthe roots, but not in young leaves. Overall, the results show that heat stress causes alternationin sucrose distribution in the plant, but may also have specificeffects on metabolic activities related to sucrose import andutilization in flower buds and flowers which in turn may enhancetheir abscission. Sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) grown at 30°C werecooled to 13°C in the light in atmospheric CO2 or low CO2,or in darkness. Photosynthetic rate at 30°C after coolingwhole plants in atmospheric CO2 for 12 h during a photoperiodwas significantly lower than at the start of the photoperiodcompared to plants cooled at low CO2, those cooled in the darkand those maintained at 30°C. Amounts of sucrose, hexosesand starch in leaves at 13°C increased throughout a 14 hphotoperiod to levels higher than in leaves at 30°C, whereamounts of sucrose and hexoses were stable or falling after4 h. Carbohydrate accumulation at 13°C during this photoperiodwas more than twice that at 30°C. After three photoperiodsand two dark periods at 13°C carbohydrate levels in leaveswere still as high as at the end of the first photoperiod, butless carbohydrate accumulated during the photoperiods than duringthe first photoperiod, and more was partitioned as starch. Amountsof soluble carbohydrate in roots were greater after 14 h at13°C than in roots of plants at 30°C. Loss of 14C fromleaves at 30°C as a proportion of 14CO2 fixed by them at30°C, decreased after exposure of plants to 13°C inthe light for 30 min prior to 14CO2feeding. Results indicatean effect of cold on the transport process that was light-dependent.It is inferred that the reduction in the proportion of 14C lostfrom leaves after 10 h cooling was due to reduced sink demand, whereas the rise in the proportion of 14C lost from leaves after24 h reflects reduced photosynthetic rate. The coincidence ofreduced photosynthetic rate with raised carbohydrate levelsin leaves maintained at 30°C throughout, whilst the restof the plant was cooled to 13°C in the light implies feedbackinhibition of photosynthesis. This may reduce the imbalancebetween source and sink in sunflower during the first days oflong-term cooling. Key words: Temperature, carbon export, carbohydrates, photosynthesis, sunflower  相似文献

Plants were allowed to assimilate 14CO2 for 30 min at 5, 15,25, and 35 °C. The changes in 14C content of a mature expandedleaf (Leaf 4), young apical leaves, and storage root, were sequentiallyfollowed over a subsequent period of 24 h in continuous light. In a second experiment plants were transferred after 14CO2 assimilationto temperatures of 10, 18, 26, and 34 °C, and the partitionof 14C between the ethanol-soluble and ethanol-insoluble fractionsof the roots and leaves was followed over a period of 72 h. The specific activities of the apical leaves and of the storageroot increased to a maximum 2 h after labelling at 25 °C,4 h at 15 and 35 °C, and 6 h at 5 °C suggesting thatthe optimum temperature for translocation of photosynthate wasabout 25 °C. The 14C partition to ethanol-soluble and ethanol-insoluble fractionsof the roots and leaves was largely attained in. 9 h. Littlerepartition of 14C assimilate fractions occurred as a resultof temperature change or growth. Root ethanol-insoluble activity, however, did increase significantly over the 72-h period : possiblecauses of this slow incorporation and their relevance to themechanism of sugar storage are discussed.  相似文献

The plastochron index (PI) has been compared with leaf growthand biomass accumulation in young soya bean plants of severalcultivars that were grown in controlled environments with differentirradiance levels and durations, temperatures, and nitrogen(N) regimes. Increasing the photoperiod from 10 to 16 h day–1 increasedthe plastochron rate (PR) and the proportion of axillary growth.Doubling the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) to 1000µmol m–2S–1, increased PR and the proportionof roots to total plant weight, but decreased the proportionof stems plus petioles to total. In a series of experiments, the plants were grown in an 8 h photoperiod at constant temperaturesof 17, 20, 26 or 32 °C. As temperature increased, PR increased, but the duration of leaf expansion decreased. Leaves were largestat 20 and progressively smaller at 26, 32 and 17 °C. Biomasswas greatest for a given PI at 20 °C and decreased in theorder of 26, 32, and 17 °C. The proportion of axillary growthalso was greatest at 20 °C. When plants were grown in a15 h photoperiod at temperatures from 17.1 to 26.6 °C, leafsize continued to increase up to the highest temperature. At17 °C, the PR in the 15 h photoperiod (PPFD 390 µmol;m–2S–1) was about threefold greater than in 8 h(500 µmol m–2 S–1); biomass accumulation perday was about fivefold greater. Increasing N from 3 to 36 mMincreased PR about 10 per cent, altered biomass partitioningamong plant parts, and increased the biomass of the plants. The NO2 form of N markedly stimulated axillary growth as comparedwith the NH4+ form. Environment or cultivar had little influenceon the duration of leaf expansion in terms of PI. Cultivarsdid not differ consistently in biomass production and allocationin the different environments. Shishido, Y., Challa, H. and Krupa, J. 1987. Effects of temperatureand light on the carbon budget of young cucumber plants studiedby steady-state feeding with 14CO°2J. exp. Bot. 38: 1044–1054. The effect of temperature on the fate of 14C assimilated insteady-state by the expanding third leaf of cucumber seedlingswas studied at irradiances of either 30 or 75 W m–2 (PAR)with a daylength of 8 h. The irradiance did not affect the relativedistribution of 14C assimilated by the source leaf between growth, respiration and export. In the range 15–30°C risesin temperature generally increased the proportion of carbonexported. The average rate of carbon exported during the nightwas about half the rate in the day. About 45% of the exportedcarbon was lost by respiration. The distribution pattern ofcarbon exported during the day differed considerably from thatof carbon exported during the night. The intensity of irradiance did not affect the proportion oflabelled carbon recovered from the roots. Thus the decreasedshoot/root ratio generally observed with increased irradianceis not directly controlled by carbohydrate supply. We found that the distribution patterns of exported 14C do notnecessarily represent the real carbon distribution, due to differencesin specific activity of imported carbon of individual organs.Consequently distribution patterns of 14C observed in experimentswith one source leaf have to be considered with caution. The respiratory losses of 14CO2 from whole plants of uniculmbarley and maize were measured following exposure of the wholeplant or a single leaf to air containing a uniform specificactivity of 14CO2 for 30–60 min during normal photosynthesis. The total respiratory efflux of 14CO2 could be described interms of two main components: an intense efflux characterizedby a half-life of 4–8 h, which was identified with thebiosynthesis of new tissue in meristems; and a much less intenseefflux characterized by a half-life of 26–120 h, whichwas primarily identified with the maintenance of metabolic activity. The (bio)synthetic efflux of 14CO2 totalled between 25 and 35per cent of the labelled assimilate (14C: 14C), and was generallyinsensitive to temperature and light intensity. The maintenanceefflux totalled between 12 and 27 per cent of the labelled assimilateor its derivatives: the total generally increased with hightemperature and low light intensity. The rate of the maintenanceefflux showed a normal temperature response (Q102). It is concludedthat the efficiency of conversion of assimilate into new growthis unlikely to exceed 65 per cent in the long term, and willgenerally be less.  相似文献

The rate of carbon import by tomato fruits has been relatedto their carbon metabolism by examining the effects of fruittemperature on the metabolism of imported assimilates. 14C–sucrose,–glucose, –fructose, –malic acid and –citricacid were injected individually into young growing tomato fruitswhich were subsequently maintained at 25 or 5 °C for 48h. Fruit temperature greatly affected the proportions of 14Clost from the fruits by export and respiration. Only 40 percent of the injected 14C from 14C–sugars and 20 per centfrom 14C–acids was recovered from fruits at 25 °C.Less than 10 per cent of the injected 14C was exported, thebalance being respired. In contrast, more than 50 per cent ofthe injected 14C was recovered from cooled fruits, in whichthe import rate of carbon was presumably reduced, and 20–36per cent of injected 14C was exported. Cooling enhanced thesynthesis of 14C–sucrose from injected 14C–hexosesand inhibited the incorporation of 14C into starch and insolubleresidue. When 14C–sugars were injected, radioactivityexported from the cooled fruits was detected as sucrose in thephloem of the peduncles; radioactivity was also detected instems and roots when fruits were cooled. In almost fully–grownfruits injected 14C–compounds were metabolized less readilythan in smaller fruits. Conversion of 14C–hexoses to 14C–sucrosewas again enhanced by cooling (5 °C, but was less in fruitsmaintained at 35 °C than in controls. Results are reported for two experiments in which bean plantswere grown in a range of daylengths from i hour to continuousillumination at temperatures of 15° C and 25° C. Markeddifferences in total leaf area and in areas of individual leaveswere found, and these are related in a quadratic fashion withtotal radiation received per day. With high levels of radiationa decrease in leaf area was noted, and this is not explicablein terms of a simple nutritional hypothesis. There are pronouncedeffects of total radiation on specific leaf area but the mechanismby which these effects are brought about is not clear. The mostimportant influence of temperature on the expansion of the leafsurface appear to be: firstly, by controlling the rate at whichleaves unfold from the stem apex; and secondly, by controllingthe partition of dry matter between the leaves and the restof the plant. No effects of daylength on vegetative developmentwere found.  相似文献

The effect of the day length on the accumulation and the degradationof the starch in leaf, stem and root tissues of prefloweringsoybean plants was determined by growing plants under a 7 or14 h light regime. As has been reported previously, the rateof starch accumulation by leaves was inversely related to daylength. High sucrose content was associated with a high rateof starch accumulation. Stem tissue showed diurnal fluctuationsin starch content and the rate of accumulation was also inverselyrelated to day length. This starch resulted from photosynthesiswithin the stem itself. A negligible amount of starch was foundin root tissue of both sets of plants. The rate of starch breakdown in leaves of 7 h plants was significantlyless than that in 14 h plants. Nevertheless, leaf starch inshort day length plants was depleted at least 4 h prior to theend of the dark period. In both sets of plants, degradationof stem starch started simultaneously with that in the leavesand continued throughout the dark period, although at a muchlower rate than that of leaves. Thus, stem starch acted as abuffer once leaf starch was depleted, providing carbohydratesto the plant, although in small quantities. To determine if soybean leaves adjust their rate of starch accumulationduring the light period to different dark period temperatures, plants were grown under temperature regimes of 30/20 °Cand 30/30 °C. Plants did not differ in rate of starch accumulationor CO2 exchange rate, but did show large differences in growthcharacteristics. High temperature plants had significantly greaterleaf area and tended to have greater leaf area ratio. Thus, despite similar rates of starch accumulation on a leaf areabasis, high temperature plants accumulated greater amounts ofstarch on a per plant basis. In earlier work the effects of light intensity over the range31 to 250 J cm–2 day–1 and carbon dioxide concentrationfrom 325 to 900 ppm with 8-h days at 18.3 °C and 16-h nightsat 15.6 °C were described. The present paper is concernedwith three further experiments with light levels up to 375 Jcm–2 day–1 (which corresponds to the daily totalin a glasshouse in southern England in early May or August andthe intensity is approximately that of mid-winter sunshine),carbon dioxide concentration up to 1500 ppm, and day temperaturesof 18.3 to 29.4 °C. Final plant weight was increased by light over the range 125–375J cm–2 day–1 and by carbon dioxide over the range325–900 ppm, with positive interaction between them; thisinteraction was increased by raising the temperature to 23.9°C and somewhat more at 29.4 °C day temperature. Leaf-arearatio and specific leaf area were reduced by increasing eitherlight or carbon dioxide but there was little effect of temperature.Leaf-weight ratios were uniform within experiments but therewere small consistent differences between one experiment andthe other two which also affected leaf-area ratios. Mean unit leaf rate was scarcely affected by day temperatureover the range investigated. There were the usual increasesdue to increased light and carbon dioxide concentration anda consistent difference in absolute value between one experimentand the other two. These differences in mean unit leaf rateare illustrated in detail in the ontogenetic trend of unit leafrate and plant size. Lower unit leaf rates were to a considerableextent compensated for by increased leaf-area ratios in theusual way. Despite the substantial differences in day temperature the specificwater contents (g water g dry weight–1) differed little, showing in the majority of cases higher values in the highertemperature for otherwise similar treatment combinations. Flower development was somewhat delayed at 23.9 °C day temperature, and substantially so at 29.4 °C. Lateral branch length wasincreased at 23.9 °C and excessively so at 29.4 °C.This reveals quite clearly that a temperature optimum for vegetativegrowth may not be the optimum for flowering performance norproduce a desirable plant shape. Despite the marked effects of temperature on rate of flowerdevelopment, the relationship between flower development andthe ratio of flower to total weight was the same for all treatmentcombinations in all three experiments and coincident with thatreported earlier. Gasometric determinations indicated that respiratory loss bythe whole plant was a smaller proportion of net photosyntheticgain at a temperature of 29.4 °C than at 18.3 °C andwas likewise a smaller proportion at 1500 ppm carbon dioxidethan at 325 ppm. If photorespiration of leaves is assumed tobe as great as their dark respiration, the respiratory lossesare in the range of 31–50 per cent of the gross gain.Greater rates of photorespiration would increase the proportionaterespiratory loss.  相似文献

Effect of Photoperiod on Growth of Sugar Beet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sugar beet grown in controlled environments were given similardaily amounts of visible radiation during three different photoperiodtreatments. Plants were given (a) 115 W m–2 visible irradiancefrom fluorescent and tungsten lamps for 12 h; (b) 88 W m–2of the same light for 16 h or (c) 115 W m–2 from fluorescentand tungsten lamps for 12 h extended to 16 h with low intensity(3 W m–2) incandescent light from the tungsten lamps only.Plant growth was increased similarly in both long day treatments[(b) and (c)] and dry weights were 25 per cent greater thanin the 12 h photoperiod (a) after 6 weeks. Leaf area was increasedby 18 per cent and net assimilation rate by 10 per cent in the16 h photoperiod at 88 W m–2 (b). By contrast, extendingthe photoperiod with 4 h of incandescent light (c) triggereda photomorphogenic increase in leaf expansion which increasedleaf area per plant by 47 per cent and leaf-area ratio by 12per cent.  相似文献

Nodulated white clover plants (Trifolium repens L. cv. Huia)were grown for 71 d in flowing nutrient solutions containingN as 10 mmol m–3 NH4NO3, under artificial illumination, with shoots at 20/15°C day/night temperatures and root temperaturereduced decrementally from 20 to 5°C. Root temperatureswere then changed to 3, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17 or 25°C, and theacquisition of N by N2 fixation, NH4+ and NO3 uptakewas measured over 14 d. Shoot specific growth rates (d. wt)doubled with increasing temperature between 7 and 17°C,whilst root specific growth rates showed little response; shoot:root ratios increased with root temperature, and over time at11°C. Net uptake of total N per plant (N2 fixation + NH4++ NO3) over 14 d increased three-fold between 3 and 17°C.The proportion contributed by N2 fixation decreased with increasingtemperature from 51% at 5°C to 18% at 25°C. Uptake ofNH4+ as a proportion of NH4+ + NO3 uptake over 14 d variedlittle (55–62%) with root temperature between 3 and 25°C,although it increased with time at most temperatures. Mean ratesof total N uptake per unit shoot f. wt over 14 d changed littlebetween 9 and 25°C, but decreased progressively with temperaturebelow 9°C, due to the decline in the rates of NH4+ and NO3uptake, even though N2 fixation increased. The results suggestthat N2 fixation in the presence of sustained low concentrationsof NH4+ and NO4 is less sensitive to low root temperaturethan are either NH4+ or NO3 uptake systems. Dark fixation of 14CO2 was followed in potato disks under varyingsalt treatments at 0° C and 25° C. It is shown thatthe specific activity of the 14CO2 supplied is heavily dilutedby endogenously produced CO2 and that the apparently greaterfixation of 14CO2, at 0° C as compared with that at 25 °C is due to the lower respiration rate at 0° C, with consequentlyless dilution of the 14CO2. supplied. At 25° C organic acidformation in response to different salt treatments fulfils thecommon expectation, 14CO2 fixation increasing in the presenceof K2SO4 and decreasing in CaCl2 relative to that in KCl. Therole of organic acids in maintaining ionic balance within thecell at 25° C is thereby indicated but at 0° C organicacid adjustments did not follow the normal pattern. At 25°C but not at o° C increasing external concentration of KCIresulted in an increased level of 14CO2 fixation.  相似文献

Abortion of pepper flowers depends on the light intensity perceivedby the plant and on the amounts of sucrose taken up by the flower(Aloni B, Karni L, Zaidman Z, Schaffer AA. 1996.Annals of Botany78: 163–168). We hypothesize that changes in the activityof sucrose-cleaving enzymes within the flower ovary might beresponsible for the changes in flower abortion under differentlight conditions. In the present study we report that the activityof sucrose synthase, but not of cytosolic acid invertase, increasesin flowers of pepper plants which were exposed, for 2 d, toincreasing photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in therange of 85–400 µmol m-2s-1at midday. Sucrose synthaseactivity increased in parallel with the increasing concentrationsof starch in the flower ovary. Feeding flower explants, preparedfrom 3-d-predarkened plants, with 100 mM sucrose for 24 h, causeda 23% increase in reducing sugars and a 2.5-fold increase instarch concentration, compared with explants fed with buffer.Likewise, feeding explants of pepper flowers with sucrose, glucose, fructose and also mannitol increased the sucrose synthase activityin the ovaries. Concomitantly, sucrose, glucose and fructose, but not mannitol, reduced the abortion of flower explants. Itis suggested that sucrose entry into the flower increases theflower sink activity by inhibiting abscission and inducing metabolicchanges, thus enhancing flower set. Wheat plants were grown in a controlled environment with daytemperatures of 18 ?C and with 500 µ Einsteins m–28–1 of photosynthetically active radiation for 16 h. Beforeanthesis and 2 to 3 weeks after, rates of net photosynthesiswere measured for leaves in 2 or 21% O2 containing 350 vpm CO2at 13, 18, 23, and 28 ?C and with 500 µEinsteins m–2s–1 of photosynthetically active radiation. Also, underthe same conditions of light intensity and temperature, therates of efflux of CO2 into CO2-free air were measured and,for mature flag leaves 3 to 4 weeks after anthesis, gross andnet photosynthesis from air containing 320 vpm 14CO2 of specificactivity 39?7 nCi µmol–1. When the O2 concentration was decreased from 21 to 2% (v/v)the rate of net photosynthesis increased by 32 per cent at thelowest temperature and 54 per cent at the highest temperature.Efflux of CO2 into CO2-free air ranged from 38 per cent of netphotosynthesis at 13 ?C to 86 per cent at 28 ?C. Gross photosynthesis, measured by the 14C assimilated during 40 s, was greater thannet photosynthesis by some 10 per cent at 13 ?C and 17 per centat 28 ?C. These data indicate that photorespiration was relativelygreater at higher temperatures.  相似文献

Summary Initial seed set and fruit set were pollen-limited in a Costa Rican population of Passiflora vitifolia, a self-incompatible species with 200–350 ovules per flower. Pollination intensity was measured by counting the number of allogamous pollen grains on stigmas of the large one-day flowers. Hand-pollinations demonstrated that 25–50 pollen grains are required for fruit set, and >450 are needed for maximum seed set, with a pollen:seed ratio of about 1.6:1.0. Hummingbirds (Phaethornis superciliosus) delivered sufficient allogamous pollen for maximum seed set to only 28% of the flowers examined. Naturally pollinated flowers yielded fewer fruits and fewer seeds per fruit than those pollinated by hand. Most pollen transferred by humming-birds was self-incompatible; emasculated flowers yielded higher seed set than flowers with intact anthers. Visitation rates did not provide a good index of effective pollination. There were significant differences in ovule number, maximum seed set, and maximum per cent seed set among individual vines. More than half of an individual's flowers failed to set fruit, whether pollinated by birds or by hand. In this population, maximum reproductive potential may be limited by maternal resources for fruit development, but seed set varies with pollination intensity. Pollen-limited seed set may be a disadvantage of self-incompatibility, especially in species with many-seeded fruits.  相似文献
