The effects of light and temperature on flowering and pollentube growth were studied in watermelon [Citrullus lanatus(Thunb.)Matsum. and Nakai, cv. Early Yates] plants grown in controlledenvironment cabinets. All female flowers were pollinated inone group of plants; none was pollinated in the other group. Temperature increase from 25 °C to 35 °C with daylengthof 14 h and light intensity of 32 klx caused increase in flowernumber per plant, proportion of male flowers, ovary length anddiameter, ovule number per ovary, rate of pollen tube growthand percentage of penetrated ovules at 24 hand 48 h after pollination.Very few flowers were produced at 40 °C, but there was ahigh proportion of male flowers. Increase in daylength from14 h to 24 h at 25 °C with light intensity of 32 klx alsoincreased number of flowers per plant, ovary length and diameterand number of ovules per ovary but sex expression and rate ofpollen tube growth were unaffected. Reduction in daylength from14 h to 8 hat 25 °C and light intensity of 32 klx and reductionin light intensity from 32 klx to 8 klx at 25 °C and 14h daylength both produced an increase in the percentage of immatureovules. The presence of fruit on the vine resulted in fewerflowers per plant and in reduced ovary legnth and diameter underall conditions tested. The results are discussed in relation to the fruiting responseof the plant.  相似文献

Plants were allowed to assimilate 14CO2 for 30 min at 5, 15,25, and 35 °C. The changes in 14C content of a mature expandedleaf (Leaf 4), young apical leaves, and storage root, were sequentiallyfollowed over a subsequent period of 24 h in continuous light. In a second experiment plants were transferred after 14CO2 assimilationto temperatures of 10, 18, 26, and 34 °C, and the partitionof 14C between the ethanol-soluble and ethanol-insoluble fractionsof the roots and leaves was followed over a period of 72 h. The specific activities of the apical leaves and of the storageroot increased to a maximum 2 h after labelling at 25 °C,4 h at 15 and 35 °C, and 6 h at 5 °C suggesting thatthe optimum temperature for translocation of photosynthate wasabout 25 °C. The 14C partition to ethanol-soluble and ethanol-insoluble fractionsof the roots and leaves was largely attained in. 9 h. Littlerepartition of 14C assimilate fractions occurred as a resultof temperature change or growth. Root ethanol-insoluble activity, however, did increase significantly over the 72-h period : possiblecauses of this slow incorporation and their relevance to themechanism of sugar storage are discussed.  相似文献

Sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) grown at 30°C werecooled to 13°C in the light in atmospheric CO2 or low CO2,or in darkness. Photosynthetic rate at 30°C after coolingwhole plants in atmospheric CO2 for 12 h during a photoperiodwas significantly lower than at the start of the photoperiodcompared to plants cooled at low CO2, those cooled in the darkand those maintained at 30°C. Amounts of sucrose, hexosesand starch in leaves at 13°C increased throughout a 14 hphotoperiod to levels higher than in leaves at 30°C, whereamounts of sucrose and hexoses were stable or falling after4 h. Carbohydrate accumulation at 13°C during this photoperiodwas more than twice that at 30°C. After three photoperiodsand two dark periods at 13°C carbohydrate levels in leaveswere still as high as at the end of the first photoperiod, butless carbohydrate accumulated during the photoperiods than duringthe first photoperiod, and more was partitioned as starch. Amountsof soluble carbohydrate in roots were greater after 14 h at13°C than in roots of plants at 30°C. Loss of 14C fromleaves at 30°C as a proportion of 14CO2 fixed by them at30°C, decreased after exposure of plants to 13°C inthe light for 30 min prior to 14CO2feeding. Results indicatean effect of cold on the transport process that was light-dependent.It is inferred that the reduction in the proportion of 14C lostfrom leaves after 10 h cooling was due to reduced sink demand, whereas the rise in the proportion of 14C lost from leaves after24 h reflects reduced photosynthetic rate. The coincidence ofreduced photosynthetic rate with raised carbohydrate levelsin leaves maintained at 30°C throughout, whilst the restof the plant was cooled to 13°C in the light implies feedbackinhibition of photosynthesis. This may reduce the imbalancebetween source and sink in sunflower during the first days oflong-term cooling. Key words: Temperature, carbon export, carbohydrates, photosynthesis, sunflower  相似文献

The effect of heat stress on processes related to carbohydratepartitioning was investigated in young bell pepper (Capsicumannum L. cv. Maor) plants in relation to abscission of theirreproductive organs at different stages of development. None of the reproductive organs abscised after 5 d in a normalday/night temperature regime (25/18 °C). With a temperatureregime of 35 °C day, 25 °C night, abscission occurredin only a small portion of the flower buds and none of the flowersand fruitlets. However, when temperatures in the day and nightwere reversed (25/35 °C, day/night) all the buds and someof the flowers abscised during that time period. The young fruitat the first node did not abscise under any temperature regime. The abscission rate of the flower buds was reduced under heatstress if the developing fruit at the first node had been removed. High temperature during either the light or dark periods reducedthe export of [14C]sucrose from the source leaf (fed for 48h with [14C]sucrose). Both heat stress and fruit presence reduced the relative amountof [14C]sucrose which was exported to the flower buds, flowersand roots. Likewise, these treatments reduced the concentrationof reducing sugars in the reproductive organs. Concomitantly, the heat stress and fruit presence on the first node reducedthe activity of soluble acid invertase in the flower buds andthe roots, but not in young leaves. Overall, the results show that heat stress causes alternationin sucrose distribution in the plant, but may also have specificeffects on metabolic activities related to sucrose import andutilization in flower buds and flowers which in turn may enhancetheir abscission. Six potato genotypes with different degrees of heat tolerancewere grown in pots at 38/25 'b0C maximum/minimum temperatureat 14 h daylength under natural light glasshouse conditions.Prior to sampling, the plants were given a 14 h dark period.Photosynthesis was measured at 28 'b0C and at a saturating lightintensity of more than 1200 µEm-2 s-1. During the optimumphotosynthetic period (09.00–12.30 h), the leaves of heat-tolerantpotato genotypes (DTO-28, Norchip, and Desiree) had 4–5times more soluble sugars (mainly sucrose) and higher sucrose-phosphatesynthase activity than the leaves of the heat-susceptible genotypes(Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Chandramukhi, and Kufri Muthu). However, starch accumulation in leaves of susceptible genotypes was abouttwice that in tolerant genotypes. All susceptible genotypesshowed a low rate of assimilate transport from leaves and ahigher shoot/root ratio which indicated that the shoot remainedthe predominant sink for photosynthate. Activities of amylaseand invertase in leaves were also higher in susceptible genotypes. It is suggested that the poor yield of heat-susceptible genotypesat high temperature and long day conditions is related to insufficientavailability of the transportable sugar, sucrose. Shishido, Y., Challa, H. and Krupa, J. 1987. Effects of temperatureand light on the carbon budget of young cucumber plants studiedby steady-state feeding with 14CO°2J. exp. Bot. 38: 1044–1054. The effect of temperature on the fate of 14C assimilated insteady-state by the expanding third leaf of cucumber seedlingswas studied at irradiances of either 30 or 75 W m–2 (PAR)with a daylength of 8 h. The irradiance did not affect the relativedistribution of 14C assimilated by the source leaf between growth, respiration and export. In the range 15–30°C risesin temperature generally increased the proportion of carbonexported. The average rate of carbon exported during the nightwas about half the rate in the day. About 45% of the exportedcarbon was lost by respiration. The distribution pattern ofcarbon exported during the day differed considerably from thatof carbon exported during the night. The intensity of irradiance did not affect the proportion oflabelled carbon recovered from the roots. Thus the decreasedshoot/root ratio generally observed with increased irradianceis not directly controlled by carbohydrate supply. We found that the distribution patterns of exported 14C do notnecessarily represent the real carbon distribution, due to differencesin specific activity of imported carbon of individual organs.Consequently distribution patterns of 14C observed in experimentswith one source leaf have to be considered with caution. A growth chamber experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of day length and temperature on the development of flowering in eight varieties of the three grain lupin species Lupinus albus (Wat and C3396), L. angustifolius (Gungurru, Polonez and W26) and L. luteus, (Juno, Radames and Teo). The plants were grown at two temperatures, 10°C and 18°C, in combination with five daylength regimes: 10, 14, 18, 24 h day at full light intensity and 10 h full light extended with 8 h low intensity light. Increased daylength decreased days from sowing to flowering in all varieties, but had little effect on thermal time to flowering in most varieties. However, C3396, W26 and Radames had a significantly longer thermal time to flowering at high, non‐vernalising temperature (18°C) at short daylengths. Low light intensity daylength extension did not significantly influence thermal time to flowering. For flower initiation, measured as number of leaves on the main stem three types of response were found. All varieties formed fewer leaves on the main stem at 10°C than at 18°C, although the two thermo‐neutral varieties of L. luteus, Juno and Teo, gave only a small response to temperature and daylength. In Polonez, Gungurru and Wat, low temperature decreased leaf number, but there was only a small response to changes in daylength. Three varieties, C3396, W26 and Radames, showed longer thermal time to flowering at 18°C with short daylengths. This could be explained by a greater number of main stem leaves formed at short daylength at non‐vernalising temperatures. Increased daylength decreased leaf number in these varieties, but never to a smaller number than for plants grown at 10°C. In these varieties, low intensity extension of the daylength had a similar (W26, Radames) or decreased (C3396) effect compared to full light extension. The hastening of time to flowering by long days could be separated into two effects: a high light energy effect hastened development by increasing the rate of leaf appearance in all varieties, while low light energy in thermo‐sensitive varieties was able to substitute for vernalisation by decreasing leaf number.  相似文献

Apical halves of sunflower leaves were fed a solution of either14C-glucose or l4C-glucose and oligomycin at 5 and 25°C,respectively, and temperature, metabolism and translocationof 14C were measured at 10- to 30-min intervals. 14C-Labeledcompounds produced by control group leaves were compared tothose produced at 5°C and in the presence of oligomycin,at 25°C. In both experiments, similar small amounts of 14C-glucosemigrated into the basal half of the leaf. Sucrose translocationfrom the apical half was apparently affected by low temperatureand oligomycin. At least two types (affected and unaffectedby low temperature and oligomycin) of translocation seem tooccur simultaneously in sunflower. (Received July 4, 1980; Accepted November 27, 1980)  相似文献

Simultaneous measurement of export from leaves and import tofruits were made on tomato plants reduced to one fully expandedleaf and one fruit. Experimental leaves were exposed to sixlight flux densities (0.5–100 W m–2) for 24 h whilerapidly growing fruits were kept in the dark at 22 °C. The rates of export of assimilate from these leaves varied from70 to 120 mg C leaf–1 day–1 corresponding with ratesof carbon fixation from 3 to 290 mg C leaf–1 day–1.Export from leaves with the lowest carbon fixation rates weremaintained by a loss of up to one-sixth of their initial carbon. In contrast, leaves with the highest carbon fixation rates exportedonly half the newly fixed carbon. The rates of import of assimilate to similar-sized fruits (c.16 cm3) were between 80 and 110 mg C fr–1 day–1but differed from the export rates of the source leaves. Thespecific growth rates and the specific respiration rates ofthe fruits were related to their initial carbon content at thebeginning of the experiment. Thus, over 24 h, the rate of importwas predetermined by the developmental stage of the fruit unalteredby the rate of current carbon fixation in the source leaf. Translocationof assimilate was regulated by sink demand under both source-and sink-limiting conditions in this short-term situation. The dynamic relationship between assimilate production in leavesand its utilization in fruits is discussed together with therole of sucrose concentration in these organs in regulatingtransport. Effects of the interaction between assimilate availability andsink demand on the metabolism of 14C assimilates in tomato leaveshave been examined in plants where the source—sink relationshipof assimilates was simplified to one leaf and one fruit truss. During experimentation the source leaf was exposed to either80 or 20 W m–2 (PAR), while the truss was either retainedor removed. Under these four source-sink conditions, a timecourse study was made on 14C assimilate distribution in thesource leaf over a period of 23 h after pulse feeding with 14CO2. While truss removal caused a temporary increase of 14C sucrosein leaves under both irradiances, the principal assimilatesaccumulated were starch and hexoses. Decreased 14C export followingtruss removal was observed within a day in well-illuminatedleaves but after 3 days in leaves under low light. The accumulationof 14C sucrose at the end of the light period was affected bytruss removal in high light leaves only 3 days later. These observations suggest that while the compartmentation ofnewly fixed assimilate was affected rapidly by the change ofsource—sink relationship, carbon export, as measured by14C loss, was affected only gradually. The possible effect of sucrose accumulation on photosynthesisis discussed.  相似文献

The rate of carbon import by tomato fruits has been relatedto their carbon metabolism by examining the effects of fruittemperature on the metabolism of imported assimilates. 14C–sucrose,–glucose, –fructose, –malic acid and –citricacid were injected individually into young growing tomato fruitswhich were subsequently maintained at 25 or 5 °C for 48h. Fruit temperature greatly affected the proportions of 14Clost from the fruits by export and respiration. Only 40 percent of the injected 14C from 14C–sugars and 20 per centfrom 14C–acids was recovered from fruits at 25 °C.Less than 10 per cent of the injected 14C was exported, thebalance being respired. In contrast, more than 50 per cent ofthe injected 14C was recovered from cooled fruits, in whichthe import rate of carbon was presumably reduced, and 20–36per cent of injected 14C was exported. Cooling enhanced thesynthesis of 14C–sucrose from injected 14C–hexosesand inhibited the incorporation of 14C into starch and insolubleresidue. When 14C–sugars were injected, radioactivityexported from the cooled fruits was detected as sucrose in thephloem of the peduncles; radioactivity was also detected instems and roots when fruits were cooled. In almost fully–grownfruits injected 14C–compounds were metabolized less readilythan in smaller fruits. Conversion of 14C–hexoses to 14C–sucrosewas again enhanced by cooling (5 °C, but was less in fruitsmaintained at 35 °C than in controls. The effect of the day length on the accumulation and the degradationof the starch in leaf, stem and root tissues of prefloweringsoybean plants was determined by growing plants under a 7 or14 h light regime. As has been reported previously, the rateof starch accumulation by leaves was inversely related to daylength. High sucrose content was associated with a high rateof starch accumulation. Stem tissue showed diurnal fluctuationsin starch content and the rate of accumulation was also inverselyrelated to day length. This starch resulted from photosynthesiswithin the stem itself. A negligible amount of starch was foundin root tissue of both sets of plants. The rate of starch breakdown in leaves of 7 h plants was significantlyless than that in 14 h plants. Nevertheless, leaf starch inshort day length plants was depleted at least 4 h prior to theend of the dark period. In both sets of plants, degradationof stem starch started simultaneously with that in the leavesand continued throughout the dark period, although at a muchlower rate than that of leaves. Thus, stem starch acted as abuffer once leaf starch was depleted, providing carbohydratesto the plant, although in small quantities. To determine if soybean leaves adjust their rate of starch accumulationduring the light period to different dark period temperatures, plants were grown under temperature regimes of 30/20 °Cand 30/30 °C. Plants did not differ in rate of starch accumulationor CO2 exchange rate, but did show large differences in growthcharacteristics. High temperature plants had significantly greaterleaf area and tended to have greater leaf area ratio. Thus, despite similar rates of starch accumulation on a leaf areabasis, high temperature plants accumulated greater amounts ofstarch on a per plant basis. The leaves of willow cuttings were allowed to assimilate 14CO2,and the rate of increase of activity in the sieve-tube sap, collected as aphid honeydew, was compared with the output ofrespiratory 14CO2 from the stem at 25 °C and at 0 °C. In the case of 3–5-week-old young shoots, the relativerate of breakdown of the 14C-labelled sugars was reduced at0 °C as compared with 25 °C. With 2–4-year-oldmature stems, however, the rate of breakdown of labelled sugarsin transit through the phloem was increased at 0 °C relativeto that at 25 °C. When the labelled sugars were being respiredin isolated stem segments where no transport was taking place, then low temperatures markedly reduced the rate of breakdownin both young shoots and mature stems. These results are discussed in relation to the results of otherworkers who have studied temperature effects on sieve-tube transport.  相似文献

The plastochron index (PI) has been compared with leaf growthand biomass accumulation in young soya bean plants of severalcultivars that were grown in controlled environments with differentirradiance levels and durations, temperatures, and nitrogen(N) regimes. Increasing the photoperiod from 10 to 16 h day–1 increasedthe plastochron rate (PR) and the proportion of axillary growth.Doubling the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) to 1000µmol m–2S–1, increased PR and the proportionof roots to total plant weight, but decreased the proportionof stems plus petioles to total. In a series of experiments, the plants were grown in an 8 h photoperiod at constant temperaturesof 17, 20, 26 or 32 °C. As temperature increased, PR increased, but the duration of leaf expansion decreased. Leaves were largestat 20 and progressively smaller at 26, 32 and 17 °C. Biomasswas greatest for a given PI at 20 °C and decreased in theorder of 26, 32, and 17 °C. The proportion of axillary growthalso was greatest at 20 °C. When plants were grown in a15 h photoperiod at temperatures from 17.1 to 26.6 °C, leafsize continued to increase up to the highest temperature. At17 °C, the PR in the 15 h photoperiod (PPFD 390 µmol;m–2S–1) was about threefold greater than in 8 h(500 µmol m–2 S–1); biomass accumulation perday was about fivefold greater. Increasing N from 3 to 36 mMincreased PR about 10 per cent, altered biomass partitioningamong plant parts, and increased the biomass of the plants. The NO2 form of N markedly stimulated axillary growth as comparedwith the NH4+ form. Environment or cultivar had little influenceon the duration of leaf expansion in terms of PI. Cultivarsdid not differ consistently in biomass production and allocationin the different environments. The effects of temperature, irradiance, and daylength on Sargassum horneri growth were examined at the germling and adult stages to discern their physiological differences. Temperature–irradiance (10, 15, 20, 25, 30°C × 20, 40, 80 μmol photons m−2s−1) and daylength (8, 12, 16, 24 h) experiments were carried out. The germlings and blades of S. horneri grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–25°C), irradiances (20–80 μmol photons m−2s−1), and daylengths (8–24 h). At the optimal growth conditions, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the germlings were 21% day−1 (25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 13% day−1 (8 h daylength). In contrast, the RGRs of the blade weights were 4% day−1 (15°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 5% day−1 (12 h daylength). Negative growth rates were found at 20 μmol photons m−2s−1 of 20°C and 25°C treatments after 12 days. This phenomenon coincides with the necrosis of S. horneri blades in field populations. In conclusion, we found physiological differences between S. horneri germlings and adults with respect to daylength and temperature optima. The growth of S. horneri germlings could be enhanced at 25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1, and 8 h daylength for construction of Sargassum beds and restoration of barren areas.  相似文献

Triticum aestivumxZea mayscrosses are now widely used in theproduction of wheat doubled haploids to produce homozygous lines.Seasonal effects are known to influence the number of haploidembryos produced through wheatxmaize crosses, but the effectsof temperature and light have not been quantified. This studyinvestigated the effect of temperature and light intensity onhaploid embryo production. New Zealand wheat cultivars weregrown in a glasshouse until booting when they were transferredto growth cabinets at three temperatures (day/night; 17/12,22/17 or 27/22 °C at an irradiance of 250 µmol m-2s-1PAR).In another experiment, wheat lines were transferred to a growthcabinet at one of three light intensities (300, 500 or 1000µmol m-2s-1PAR at 22/17 °C day/night, with a photoperiodof 16 h). The temperature and light intensity at which pollinationswere made and subsequent fertilisation and embryo developmentoccurred, significantly (P<0.01) influenced the frequencyof haploid embryo production. The optimal temperature for embryorecovery was 22/17 °C. The greatest number of embryos wasproduced at a light intensity of 1000 µmol m-2s-1. Thesefindings will result in improvements in the overall efficiencyof the wheatxmaize system for wheat doubled haploid production.Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company Intergeneric crossing, temperature, light intensity,Triticum aestivum, wheat,Zea mays, maize.  相似文献

To increase the proportion of photosynthates exported from tomatoleaves and to examine how far the subsequent distribution islinked with the activity of physiological sinks two types ofprocedures were used. In the first experiment the number ofsources of photosynthates was reduced by removing leaves orexcluding light from them and the growth of the fruit increasedby applying growth regulators. By this means a 30–50 percent increase in the export of radio-active photosynthates inthe first 24 h from a test leaf exposed to 14CO2 was recorded. The enhanced activity of the sinks induced by growth regulatorsalthough increasing the amount of 14C material leaving a leafdid not increase the proportion of the exported fraction whichentered the fruit. In contrast a reduction in the number ofphotosynthetic sources increased both the absolute and relativeamounts entering the fruit from the treated leaf. In the second experiment grafts were made between potato andtomato in both directions. When the potato was the rootstockboth tomato and potato leaves exposed to 14CO2 exported a higherproportion of the radioactive assimilates than when the tomatowas the rootstock. Movement was greater from scion to root-stockthan vice versa. The results are discussed in the context of fruit productionby the tomato and the extent to which yield of fruit is determinedby internal factors.  相似文献

Nutrient-sufficient cultures of a Trondheimsfjord (Norway) cloneof the marine centric diatom Skeleionema costatum (Grev.) Clevewere grown at 75 µmol m–2 s–1 and 15C at24 and 12 h daylength to study diurnal variations and the effectof daylength on pigment and chemical composition, photosyntheticparameters, dark respiration rates and scaled fluorescence excitationspectra (F), the latter used as estimates for the absorptionof energy available to Photosystem II. Specific growth rateswere 1.06 and 0.56 day in 24 and 12 h daylength, respectively, while dark respiration rates were generally 85% of the net growthrate. The Chla-normalized photosynthetic coefficients PBm andaB were {small tilde}20–25% higher in continuous lightthan at 12 h daylength, while the Chla:C ratio was {small tilde}15%lower (0.051 versus 0.061 w:w). Thus, the carbon-normalizedcoefficients Pcm and ac were <11% lower at 24 h than at 12h daylength. The maximum quantum yield max, the Chla:C ratioand F differed negligibly, as did the light saturation indexlk, the N:C ratio and the ratios Chlc:Chla and Fucoxanthin:Chla. PBm and lk did not exhibit diurnal variations at 24 hdaylength, and varied within 23% of the daily mean at 12 h daylength.Predictions of the daily gross photosynthetic rate based ondata for a given time of the day should thus not be >10%in error relative to an integrated value based on several datasets collected through 24 h. max was 0.084–0.117 mol O2(mol photons) for gross oxygen evolution. However, ifused in mathematical models for predicting the gross and netgrowth rates (i.e. the gross and net carbon turnover rates),‘practical’ values of 0.076 and 0.040 g-at C (molphotons), respectively, should be employed. Correspondingly, values for aB and PBm should be adjusted pro rata. 1Present address: College of Marine Studies, Sjmannsveien 27,N-6008 lesund, Norway  相似文献

Photosynthetic acclimation was examined by exposing third trifoliolateleaves of soybeans to air temperatures of 20 to 30°C andphotosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) of 150 to 950µmolphotons m–2 s–1 for the last 3 d before they reachedmaximum area. In some cases the environment of the third leafwas controlled separately from that of the rest of the plant.Photosynthesis, respiration and dry mass accumulation were determinedunder the treatment conditions, and photosynthetic capacity, and dry mass and protein content were determined at full expansion.Photosynthetic capacity, the light-saturated rate of net carbondioxide exchange at 25°C and 34 Pa external partial pressureof carbon dioxide, could be modified between 21 and 35 µmolCO2 m–2 s–1 by environmental changes after leaveshad become exporters of photosynthate. Protein per unit leafmass did not differ between treatments, and photosynthetic capacityincreased with leaf mass per unit area. Photosynthetic capacityof third leaves was affected by the PPFD incident on those leaves, but not by the PPFD on other leaves on the plant. Photosyntheticcapacity of third leaves was affected by the temperature ofthe rest of the plant, but not by the temperature of the thirdleaves. Photosynthetic capacity was linearly related to carbondioxide exchange rate in the growth regimes, but not to daytimePPFD. At high PPFD, and at 25 and 30°C, mass accumulationwas about 28% of the mass of photosynthate produced. At lowerPPFD, and at 20°C, larger percentages of the photosynthateproduced accumulated as dry mass. The results suggest that photosynthatesupply is an important factor controlling leaf structural growthand, consequently, photosynthetic acclimation to light and temperature.
