A hitherto undescribed virus, termed rottboellia yellow mottle virus (RoYMV), affecting Rottboellia cochinchinensis (syn. R. exaltata, itch grass) at Ibadan, Nigeria, was investigated. RoYMV virions are isometric, c. 29 nm in diameter, and sediment homogeneously at 114s. In isopycnic CsCl gradients, RoYMV virions band sharply at a buoyant density of 1.379 g cm-3, but in Cs2SO4 gradients, virions band at two zones, at the densities of 1.300 g cm-3 and 1.325 g cm-3. Treatment with EDTA at pH 8.0 reduced the sedimentation value of RoYMV to c. 87s and rendered it susceptible to proteinase-K, SDS and NaCl. The apparent molecular weight of RoYMV coat protein was c. 27 000. Virions encapsidate a single-stranded RNA of mol. wt 1.4 × 106 Da. Besides R. cochinchinensis, RoYMV was mechanically transmissible only to maize (Zea mays). No reaction occurred when RoYMV was tested against antisera to 44 isometric plant viruses (belonging to 12 groups), including several that affect Gramineae. RoYMV exhibits striking similarities with other viruses belonging to the sobemovirus group, and it is tentatively designated as a new member of the sobemovirus group.  相似文献

Leaf venation patterns of 150 species of Euphorbia are presented and their value as a diagnostic feature in the genus assessed. Based on the gross venation patterns, the species have been grouped into uni-, bi-, tri-veined and special categories. The majority of the species studied belonged to the tri-veined category, in which ornamentation of the veins and the course of traces in the lamina proved useful additional characters. Features such as the size of the areoles, the number of vein endings, and their further ramifications and composition in each areole varied in the same leaf or in different leaves of a given species. Furthermore, no direct correlation could be established between the areole size and the numbers of vein endings and tips per areole. Forty species possess a parenchymatous vein sheath. Globular chloroplasts showed up conspicuously in the sheath cells of a few species. Dilated tracheidal elements, localized on the venules or at the tips of vein endings, are characteristic of the xerophytic species. In some instances, correlation was apparent between plants grouped according to their venation patterns and their habit.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Hydrobryopsis sessilis (Podostemaceae, subfamily Podostemoideae), a reduced, threatened, aquatic angiosperm endemic to the Western Ghats of India, was examined. This is the first report on the transition from the vegetative to the reproductive phase in this plant, describing floral ontogeny, pollination and the breeding system. The cytohistological zonation of the apical meristem of the reproductive thallus is identical to that of the apical meristem of the vegetative thallus. The floral shoots do not replace vegetative shoots (i.e. the vegetative shoots never bear flowers), but form at new sites at the tip of the flattened plant body. Each floral shoot meristem is tiny, deep‐seated and concave and arises endogenously following lysigeny. The floral shoot meristem gives rise to four to six bracts in a distichous manner. The development of spathe, stamens and carpels is described. The ab initio dorsiventrality of the carpels and the occurrence of endothelium in the ovules are reported. The mature stigmas and anthers lie close to each other. The pollen germinates within undehisced anthers and the pollen tubes enter the stigmas in the unopened floral bud, leading to pre‐anthesis, complete, constitutional cleistogamy under water. The seed set is 63.2%. A significant finding is the penetration of several pollen tubes into the filaments of stamens in 16% of the flower buds, indicating a trend towards cryptic self‐fertilization. The Indian Podostemoideae appear to show a shift from xenogamy or geitonogamy or autogamy in a chasmogamous flower to complete autogamy in a cleistogamous flower. The floral modifications leading to cleistogamy in H. sessilis have been identified. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 222–236.  相似文献

Land use changes including deforestation, road construction and agricultural encroachments have been linked to the increased prevalence of several infectious diseases. In order to better understand how deforestation affects the prevalence of vector-borne infectious diseases in wildlife, nine paired sites were sampled (disturbed vs. undisturbed habitats) in Southern Cameroon. We studied the diversity, prevalence and distribution of avian malaria parasites ( Plasmodium spp.) and other related haemosporidians (species of Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon ) from these sites in two widespread species of African rainforest birds, the yellow-whiskered greenbul ( Andropadus latirostris , Pycnonotidae) and the olive sunbird ( Cyanomitra olivacea , Nectariniidae). Twenty-six mitochondrial cytochrome b lineages were identified: 20 Plasmodium lineages and 6 Haemoproteus lineages. These lineages showed no geographic specificity, nor significant differences in lineage diversity between habitat types. However, we found that the prevalence of Leucocytozoon and Haemoproteus infections were significantly higher in undisturbed than in deforested habitats ( Leucocytozoon spp. 50.3% vs. 35.8%, Haemoproteus spp. 16.3% vs. 10.8%). We also found higher prevalence for all haemosporidian parasites in C. olivacea than in A. latirostris species (70.2% vs. 58.2%). Interestingly, we found one morphospecies of Plasmodium in C. olivacea , as represented by a clade of related lineages, showed increased prevalence at disturbed sites, while another showed a decrease, testifying to different patterns of transmission, even among closely related lineages of avian malaria, in relation to deforestation. Our work demonstrates that anthropogenic habitat change can affect host–parasite systems and result in opposing trends in prevalence of haemosporidian parasites in wild bird populations.  相似文献

The anatomy of the leaves of five species of Garrya has been investigated with a view to determining if this would be helpful in the taxonomic assignment of the genus, which has had a disputed taxonomic position.
Our observations indicate that the leaves of Garrya show several anatomical features which are unknown or rare in the Cornaceae, the family in which it has been included many times. These are: (a) two layers of lower epidermis; (b) papillae on the lower epidermis and sometimes on the upper as well; (c) beak-like extensions of epidermal cells adjacent to guard cells; (d) well-developed hypodermis below the upper epidermis; (e) more than one layer of palisade tissue and (f) three types of sclereids in the lamina–filiform, stellate-polymorphic and brachysclereids–distributed diffusely, subterminally or apparently terminally. These characters support the separation of Garrya from the Cornaceae and the retention of the family Garryaceae.  相似文献

Developmental morphology of two natural populations of Ceratophyllum inhabiting the waters of Delhi has been investigated under natural conditions and in aseptic culture. Both the populations show an extreme degree of adaptability to hydrophily. The embryo is unusually highly developed and contains 12–14 whorls of leaves and a few lateral buds. The two populations differ significantly in colour and dichotomy of leaf; structure and position of male flowers; number, position and colour of horns on the fruit; stylar length and distribution of sexes. The latter two parameters are probably responsible for the reproductive isolation of the populations, despite their sympatric association. On account of these differences, the two populations are assigned to two distinct species C. demersum L. and C. echinatum Gray, respectively and their taxonomy is discussed; C. echinatum is a New World species not previously recorded from India.  相似文献

In the debate over modes of vertebrate diversification in tropical rainforests, two competing hypotheses of speciation predominate: those that emphasize the role of geographical isolation during glacial periods and those that stress the role of ecology and diversifying selection across ecotones or environmental gradients. To investigate the relative roles of selection versus isolation in refugia, we contrasted genetic and morphologic divergence of the olive sunbird (Cyanomitra olivacea) at 18 sites (approximately 200 individuals) across the forest–savanna ecotone of Central Africa in a region considered to have harboured three hypothesized refugia during glacial periods. Habitats were characterized using bioclimatic and satellite remote‐sensing data. We found relatively high levels of gene flow between ecotone and forest populations and between refugia. Consistent with a pattern of divergence‐with‐gene‐flow, we found morphological characters to be significantly divergent across the gradient [forest versus ecotone (mean ± SD): wing length 60.47 ± 1.81 mm versus 62.18 ± 1.35 mm; tarsus length 15.51 ± 0.82 mm versus 16.00 ± 0.57 mm; upper mandible length 21.77 ± 1.09 mm versus 23.19 ± 0.98 mm, respectively]. Within‐habitat comparisons across forest and ecotone sites showed no significant differences in morphology. The results show that divergence in morphological traits is tied to environmental variables across the gradient and is occurring despite gene flow. The pattern of divergence‐with‐gene‐flow found is similar to that described for other rainforest species across the gradient. These results suggest that neither refugia, nor isolation‐by‐distance have played a major role in divergence in the olive sunbird, although ecological differences along the forest and savanna ecotone may impose significant selection pressures on the phenotype and potentially be important in diversification. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 821–835.  相似文献

Anatomical studies of representatives of 11 groups of species of the genus Euphorbia , erected on the basis of leaf venation patterns, reveal the occurrence of 3 main types of nodal organization, viz. unilacunar 1-trace, bilacunar 2-trace and trilacunar 3-trace (in the majority of the species). In some instances, a deceptive multi-stranded condition is visualized if cleared leaves alone are studied. Euphorbia polygonifolia and E. peplis leaves have a variable vascular supply in the same plant, consisting of 2 or 3 strands in the former and 2 or 4 strands in the latter. No correlation was found between the type of node and either the habit and habitat of the plant or the leaf shape and size.  相似文献

Factors controlling urease levels in sterile cultures of jackbeancotyledons were investigated. Urea, thiurea, not increased ratesof growth favour higher urease activity. Higher urease levelsin the urea-treated set were attributed to substrate protectionand/or induction of urease Lower urease activity in the absenceof thiourea may be due to inhibition of urease by metabolicallyproduced ammonia and increased protose activity. Utilizationof ammonia in protein synthesis, lower protease activity, andpossible induction of urease by thiourea in fast-growing tissuesof cotyledons may lead to higher urease activity. High temperaturelow pH, and the presence of EDTA, hydroxyurea, or actinomyhcinD cause a faster decrease in urease units.  相似文献
