We investigated the effects of light and flooding on growth and survivorship of saplings in a river floodplain forest of southeast Texas. Growth responses to light were consistent with the expectation that shade-intolerant species grow faster than shade-tolerant species in high light, and vice versa. Mortality risk was not associated with shade tolerance level unless high mortality risks associated with a period of high flooding were removed. These results support the hypothesis that shade-tolerant species in floodplains may be limited by flooding as previous studies suggested. Also, compared to their performance at a nearby mesic site, common species showed little intraspecific difference in shade tolerance, especially for shade-intolerant species. Finally, the positive correlation between low-light growth and survivorship suggests that carbon allocation to continued growth may be favored as a sapling strategy in floodplains.  相似文献

Abstract. Eragrostis intermedia (Plains lovegrass) is a midheight perennial bunchgrass native to semi-arid grasslands of the southwestern USA, that becomes an abundant and dominant component of these grasslands in areas long protected from livestock grazing. Substantial mortality of plains lovegrass occurred on a large livestock exclosure in southeastern Arizona, after a period of declining precipitation, but only in areas that had not burned in the previous three years. Lovegrass abundance subsequently increased on both undisturbed and burned sites, but remained substantially higher on the burned area. Long-term abundance of plains lovegrass may depend on episodic fire, particularly during periods of reduced precipitation.  相似文献

A guild of leeches and triclads coexist and are the most numerous invertebrate predators on the stony shores of productive British lakes. Populations of all species are food-limited. Mortality of recruited young is considerably higher in leech than in triclad populations, and this paper investigates reasons for this. In particular, the feeding success of young leeches and triclads in relation to prey species, prey size, prey condition (alive or crushed), spatial heterogeneity (with or without the presence of stones or gravel), and the presence or absence of other young or adults predators (leeches or triclads) of the same or different species are investigated in the laboratory. Feeding success by young leeches and triclads on crushed prey without the presence of stones was high, but declined dramatically in leeches but not triclads when stones were present. Young leeches and triclads were inept at capturing live prey, of a small or large size, with the exception of soft-bodied prey such as oligochaetes. Feeding success by young predators on live prey was not increased by the presence of other young predators of the same or different species. With only a few exceptions, the presence of adult leeches, and to a much lesser extent adult triclads, increased the feeding success, growth and survival of young leeches and triclads. It is concluded that the high mortality of young leeches, compared to triclads, in field populations is due to their inability to locate damaged food in an environment with spatial heterogeneity due to a poorly developed chemosensory system. High and low levels of juvenile morality are accompanied by high and low reproductive rates in leech and triclad populations, respectively. It is unusual for a food limited population to have a high level of recruitment, but it is speculated that the characteristically high reproductive output in parasitic leeches, from which predaceous leeches are derived or have affinities, has been retained to counterbalance high juvenile mortality rates.  相似文献

Bovine aortic endothelial BAE-2 cells exposed to the peroxidizing agent, tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) or 2,4-nonadienal (NDE), suffered from disruption of cell membrane integrity and from reduction of mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity as assessed by fluorometry using ethidium homodimer and photometry using WST-1, respectively. The cells were protected from t-BuOOH-induced injury more markedly by L-ascorbic acid-2-O-phosphate (Asc2P) stably masked at the 2,3-enediol moiety, which is responsible for the antioxidant ability of L-ascorbic acid (Asc), than by Asc itself. In contrast, NDE-induced membrane disruption but not mitochondrial dysfunction was prevented by Asc2P, whereas Asc exhibited no prevention against both types of injury. The amount of intracellular Asc was 7.2- to 9.0-fold larger in Asc2P-administered BAE-2 cells, where the intact form Asc2P was not detected, than in Asc-administered cells as assessed by HPLC of cell extract with detection by coulometric ECD and W. During transmembrane influx into the cell, Asc2P was concentrated as highly as 70- to 90-fold relative to the extracellular Asc2P concentration, whereas Asc was 8-to 13-fold concentrated as estimated based on an intracellular water content of 0.59 pL/cell determined by [14C]PEG/gas chromatography. Thus, Asc2P but not Asc is highly concentrated in the aqueous phase of the cell after prompt dephosphorylation, and may thereby render the cell more resistant to t-BuOOH-peroxidation assumedly via scavenging of intracellular reactive oxygen species than to peroxidation with the less hydroplulic agent NDE.  相似文献

Abstract. Aesculus turbinata is a tree species with large seeds (6.2 g mean dry weight). We studied the demography of its seeds and seedlings in a temperate deciduous forest in northern Japan to elucidate the ecological significance of large seeds with special reference to herbivory and secondary dispersal. Both seed and seedling stages suffered greatly from herbivores. Seedling herbivory was important judged from experiments with shoot clipping and hypogeal cotyledon removal. However, some seedlings survived through re-sprouting after herbivory. Survival rate and percentage resprouting seedlings were lower than those with remaining cotyledons, though seedling size was not affected. This suggests that stored resources in hypogeal cotyledons are working as a kind of ‘risk hedge’ against severe aboveground shoot clipping experienced by A. turbinata. The spatial distribution of seedlings was expanded via seed scatter-hoarding by rodents. Seedling survival rate was higher within canopy gaps than under closed canopy, indicating that canopy gaps are safe sites for establishment, and was negatively correlated with seedling density. Therefore, secondary seed dispersal in this species seems to be effective in ‘finding’ safe sites and in ‘escaping’ density-dependent mortality. The large seeds and seedlings of A. turbinata are attractive to herbivores, but the high resistance of seedlings to herbivory due to large reserves and the effective secondary dispersal appear to mitigate these disadvantages.  相似文献

The population density of herbivores depends on the spatial scale as well as the temporal scale. In a small-scale, short-term experiment, the number of individuals entering from the surrounding area will be most influential in determining the herbivore density. In large-scale, long-term experiments, however, the density of herbivores will rather be influenced by the survival rate of individuals inside the field because most of the herbivorous population derives from the parents that developed inside the field. If we want to predict the large-scale long-term density of herbivores, therefore, emphasis should be placed on the estimation of survival rate. To elucidate the effects of plant density on the large-scale long-term abundance of cabbage pests, we examined the survival rates of three lepidopterous pests, the small white butterfly Pieris rapae crucivora Boisduval (Pieridae), the beet semi-looper Autographa nigrisigna (Walker) (Noctuidae), and the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Yponomeutidae) under two levels of plant spacing (sparse plot, 2 m × 2 m interval; dense plot, 0.5 m × 0.5 m interval). The experiment with four blocks was repeated in two seasons. The number of eggs per plant was larger in the sparse plots than in the dense plots for all species. The survival rate of eggs and larvae, on the contrary, was lower in the sparse plots than in the dense plots. The lower survival rate of eggs in the sparse plots was mainly caused by the density dependency, while the lower survival rate of larvae in the sparse plots was mainly caused by the direct effects of plant density. It was thus suggested that the density of herbivores may become lower in the sparsely planted field in the long run because of the higher mortality of larvae. A model for describing the competition–density (C-D) effect in self-thinning populations was developed on the basis of the following three basic assumptions: (1) the growth of mean phytomass follows a general logistic equation; (2) final yield is independent of initial population density; and (3) there exists a functional relationship between actual and initial population densities at any given time. The resultant equation takes the same reciprocal form as the reciprocal equation of the C-D effect derived from Shinozaki–Kira's theory (i.e., the logistic theory of the C-D effect), which deals with the density effect in nonself-thinning populations. However, one of the two time-dependent coefficients is quite different in mathematical interpretation between the two reciprocal equations. The reciprocal equation for self-thinning populations is essentially the same as the reciprocal equation assumed in the derivation of the functional relationship between actual and initial population densities. The establishment of the reciprocal equation is supported by the empirical facts that the reciprocal relationship between mean phytomass and population density is discernible in not only nonself-thinning populations but also in self-thinning populations. The present model is expected to systematically interpret underlying mechanisms between the C-D effect, which is observed at a time constant among populations with various initial densities, and self-thinning, which is observed along a time continuum in a given population. 笔者自1986年起对仅存于海南大田国家级保护区围栏内外两个坡鹿种群进行了连续4年追踪研究,就数量、年净增长率、年均增长率、年龄组成、性比、成幼比、母仔比、及补充率和死亡率进行了分析。围栏内外坡鹿年均增长率22.5%和10.6%,年净增长率逐年呈下降趋势。补充率下降是围栏内坡鹿年净增长率下降的主要原因,而这是由于密度过高、食物不足造成的;围栏外坡鹿年净增长率下降是死亡率增加的结果,偷猎是主要因素。对性比、成幼比、母仔比变化的分析也得出了同样的结论。本文最后提出了保护建议。  相似文献

After considering the observed long-term trends in average monthly temperatures distribution in Moscow, the authors evaluated how acute mortality responded to changes in daily average, minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the year, and identified vulnerable population groups, by age and causes of death. A plot of the basic mortality–temperature relationship indicated that this relationship was V-shaped with the minimum around 18°C. Each 1°C increment of average daily temperature above 18°C resulted in an increase in deaths from all non-accidental causes by 2.8%, from coronary heart disease by 2.7%, from cerebrovascular diseases by 4.7%, and from respiratory diseases by 8.7%, with a lag of 0 or 1 day. Each 1°C drop of average daily temperature from +18°C to −10°C resulted in an increase in deaths from all non-accidental causes by 0.49%, from coronary heart disease by 0.57%, from cerebrovascular diseases by 0.78%, and from respiratory diseases by 1.5%, with lags of maximum association varying from 3 days for non-accidental mortality to 6 days for cerebrovascular mortality. In the age group 75+ years, corresponding risks were consistently higher by 13–30%. The authors also estimated the increase in non-accidental deaths against the variation of daily temperatures. For each 1°C increase of variation of temperature throughout the day, mortality increased by 0.3–1.9%, depending on other assumptions of the model.  相似文献

We conceptualize social capital as an aggregate factor affecting health production and analyze the effect of community social capital (CSC) externalities on individual mortality risk in Sweden. The study was based on a random sample from the adult Swedish population of approximately 95,000 individuals who were followed up for 4-21 years. Two municipality-level variable--registered election participation rate and registered crime rate--were used to be a proxy for CSC. The impact of CSC on mortality was estimated with an extended Cox model, controlling for the initial health status and a number of individual characteristics. The results indicate that both proxies of CSC were associated with individual risk from all-cause mortality for males older than 65+ (p=0.013 and p=0.008) but not for females. A higher election participation rate negatively and significantly associated with the mortality risk from cancer for males (p=0.007), and may also have exerted protective associations for cardiovascular mortality (p=0.134) and deaths due to "suicide" (p=0.186) or "other external causes" (p=0.055). Similar associations were observed for the crime rate variable. The findings were robust to alternative specifications examined in the sensitivity analysis.  相似文献
