Fungi are important components of tropical ecosystems, especially in the recycling of nutrients. However, there is little
information on how fungal diversity is structured at scales suitable to plan their conservation. We tested if the distribution
of fruiting bodies of litter fungi was random in the landscape (over 25 km2) in a tropical evergreen forest in Central Amazonia. We used linear regressions to evaluate the influence of rainfall, soil
characteristics and topography on morphospecies richness and composition. Fungi were collected twice in thirty 0.25 × 250 m
plots. Short-term rainfall was represented by the cumulative rainfall in the three days before each plot was surveyed. Plots
were classified in two groups based on cumulative rainfall. Clay content in soil and rainfall influenced morphospecies richness,
but responses to edaphic factors depended on rainfall. Wetter periods apparently decreased limiting moisture conditions in
higher areas, allowing fungal activity and fruiting body production. Morphospecies composition was influenced by clay content,
but influence on fungi was probably indirect as clay content was correlated with altitude, plant community and nitrogen availability.
Our results suggest that the species of litter fungi are not randomly distributed in the landscape. Furthermore, they indicate
that it is viable to conduct mesoscale evaluations of fungal diversity, if the temporal and spatial variation and their interaction

Sordaria macrospora is a homothallic ascomycete which is able to form fertile fruiting bodies without a mating partner. To analyze the molecular
basis of homothallism and the role of mating products during fruiting body development, we have deleted the mating type gene
Smta-1 encoding a high-mobility group domain (HMG) protein. The ΔSmta-1 deletion strain is morphologically wild type during vegetative
growth, but it is unable to produce perithecia or ascospores. To identify genes expressed under control of Smta-1, we performed a cross-species microarray analysis using Neurospora crassa cDNA microarrays hybridized with S. macrospora targets. We identified 107 genes that are more than twofold up- or down-regulated in the mutant. Functional classification
revealed that 81 genes have homologues with known or putative functions. Comparison of array data from ΔSmta-1 with those
from three phenotypically similar mutants revealed that only a limited set of ten genes is deregulated in all mutants. Remarkably,
the ppg2 gene encoding a putative lipopeptide pheromone is 500-fold down-regulated in the ΔSmta-1 mutant while in all other sterile
mutants this gene is up-regulated.

Hypsizygus marmoreus is an important industrialized mushroom, yet the lack of basic research on this fungus has hindered further development of its economic value. In this study, mycelia injured by scratching were treated with hydrogen-rich water (HRW) to investigate the involvement of the redox system in fruiting body development. Compared to the control group, damaged mycelia treated with HRW regenerated earlier and showed significantly enhanced fruiting body production. Antioxidant capacity increased significantly in damaged mycelia after HRW treatment, as indicated by higher antioxidant enzyme activities and antioxidant contents; the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were also reduced at the mycelial regeneration stage after treatment with HRW. Furthermore, genes involved in ROS, Ca2+, MAPK and oxylipin signaling pathways were up-regulated by HRW treatment. In addition, laccase and manganese peroxidase activities and mycelial biomass were higher after HRW treatment, suggesting that HRW might enhance the substrate-degradation rate to provide more carbon sources for fruiting body production. 相似文献

Improvement of light penetration within tree canopies has been a constant objective of fruit tree architecture manipulation through the setting up of training systems. Recently, centrifugal training, i.e. the removal of fruiting shoots in the tree centre and on the underside of branches, has been proposed to improve fruit size and colour as well as return-bloom as compared to conventional solaxe-trained trees with equivalent crop loads. The present study was conducted to quantify the benefits of centrifugal training on light interception by the fruiting shoots via computer-assisted three-dimensional representations of foliage geometry. Data were collected on six 5-year-old apple trees cv.Galaxy, trained either with solaxe or centrifugal training systems, using an electromagnetic 3D digitiser. The 3D distribution of the foliage in the tree canopy was recreated by combining both the spatial locations of shoots (as measured from 3D digitising) and foliage reconstruction. Light interception efficiency properties of the trees were characterised by silhouette to total area ratio (STAR) values computed from images of the 3D mock-ups. Compared to the solaxe system, centrifugal training significantly improved the STAR of the whole tree by 20%. It also increased both leaf area and STAR of the fruiting shoots by approximately 15%, regardless of their position in the canopy. In this paper, we discuss the role of this enhanced light interception by the canopy in increasing the autonomy of the fruiting shoot, i.e. improved fruit size and colour, and return-bloom. 相似文献

To date, arabinose-binding lectins have been reported only from the human opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the plant aggressive pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, and the sponge Pellina semitubulosa. An arabinose-binding lectin with mitogenic activity toward splenocytes and a high specific hemagglutinating activity was isolated in the present study from a wild discomycete mushroom, Peziza sylvestris. The maximal mitogenic activity was induced by a lectin concentration of 8 microM. The lectin was a single-chained protein with a molecular mass of 20 kDa. Its N-terminal sequence showed only slight resemblance to other mushroom lectins. It was adsorbed on both diethylaminoethyl-cellulose and carboxymethyl-cellulose. Unlike previously reported mushroom lectins, the hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was inhibited by arabinose, but not by a large variety of other carbohydrates. The lectin activity was adversely affected in the presence of 0.05 M NaOH or 0.025 M HCl, and when the ambient temperature was elevated above 35 degrees C. 相似文献

The fruiting phenology and fruit removal patterns of Rhus trichocarpa Miq. (Anacardiaceae) were investigated in a warm-temperate secondary forest in Japan. Mature fruits of this species are dispersed by birds. Effects of fruit display size and canopy openness on fruit removal were investigated in years with different fruit densities (i.e., masting and non-masting years). Moreover, effects of increased canopy openness during winter on fruit removal were also investigated. Seasonal patterns of fruit removal were quite different between masting and non- masting years. In the non-mast year, fruits were removed by birds soon after maturation in the summer. In contrast, in the mast year, fruits were removed gradually by birds from summer to winter. Moreover, the rate of fruit removal was greater for trees with a larger display size in the non-mast year, whereas that was greater for trees with greater canopy openness in the mast year. Canopy openness increased in winter, and fruit removal in winter was enhanced in trees with a more open canopy only in the non-mast year. These observations strongly suggest that avian dispersers became satiated in the mast year, whereas fruit removal was enhanced in the non-mast year. In the mast year, although many fruits were not dispersed until winter, they were neither depredated nor rotten, and the long period of fruit removal by birds may have enhanced fruit dispersal. The large abundance of seedlings and saplings of this species in Japanese secondary forests suggests that this fruiting strategy is beneficial. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to isolate a laccase from fruiting bodies of the yellow mushroom Cantharellus cibarius. The fruiting body extract was subjected to a purification protocol that involved ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, affinity chromatography on Affi-gel blue gel and Con A-Sepharose, and gel filtration by fast protein liquid chromatography on Superdex 75. The laccase was unadsorbed on DEAE-cellulose and Affi-gel blue gel and adsorbed on Con A-Sepharose. The laccase was composed of two identical subunits each with a molecular mass of 46 kDa. The laccase exhibited a temperature-dependent rise in activity over the temperature range 20-50 degrees C. When the temperature was raised above 60 degrees C there was a fall in enzyme activity. The enzyme manifested maximal activity at pH 4. At and above pH 6 there was a dramatic reduction in activity. The unique features of this fruiting body laccase compared with previously reported mycelial laccases include homodimeric nature, a distinctive N-terminal sequence, a higher optimal pH, and adsorption on only ConA-Sepharose among the various chromatographic media tested. 相似文献

The oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, cultivated in solid state on sugarcane bagasse-wheat bran (5:1) medium in the presence of veratryl alcohol resulted in an increased production of the fruiting body at earlier times compared to when the fungus was grown in the absence of veratryl alcohol. The results indicate a new physiological role for veratryl alcohol in stimulating fruiting body formation. Veratryl alcohol also stimulated laccase production during the mycelial growth stage. Evidence is also presented that laccases were involved in the physiological development of the fruiting body. 相似文献
