The cuticular wax of Taxus baccata L. needles was found to contain four different classes of long-chain esters that were identified by various chemical transformations with product assignment employing GC-MS. Homologous series of (1) 3-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-propyl esters of C(20)-C(36) fatty acids, (2) 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butyl esters of C(18)-C(28) fatty acids, (3) 3-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-propyl esters of C(20)-C(32) fatty acids, and (4) 4-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-butyl esters of C(18)-C(28) fatty acids were identified. The four compound classes amounted to 0.1-3.6 micro g/cm(2) of needle surface area, corresponding to 0.2-7.6% of the wax mixture, respectively. While both phenylpropyl ester series had a maximum for the homolog containing tetracosanoic acid, in the phenylbutyl esters homologs containing eicosanoic and docosanoic acids predominated.  相似文献

In order to improve the basis for utilising nitrogen (N) fixed by white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in northern agriculture, we studied how defoliation stress affected the N contents of major plant organs in late autumn, N losses during the winter and N accumulation in the following spring. Plants were established from stolon cuttings and transplanted to pots that were dug into the field at Apelsvoll Research Centre (60°42′ N, 10°51′ E) and at Holt Research Centre (69°40′ N, 18°56′ E) in spring 2001 and 2002. During the first growing season, the plants were totally stripped of leaves down to the stolon basis, cut at 4 cm height or left undisturbed. The plants were sampled destructively in late autumn, early spring the second year and after 6 weeks of new spring growth. The plant material was sorted into leaves, stolons and roots. Defoliation regime did not influence the total amount of leaf N harvested during and at the end of the first growing season. However, for intensively defoliated plants, the repeated leaf removal and subsequent regrowth occurred at the expense of stolon and root development and resulted in a 61–85% reduction in the total plant N present in late autumn and a 21–59% reduction in total accumulation of plant N (plant N present in autumn + previously harvested leaf N). During the winter, the net N loss from leaf tissue (N not recovered in living nor dead leaves in the spring) ranged from 57% to 74% of the N present in living leaves in the autumn, while N stored in stolons and roots was much better conserved. However, the winter loss of stolon N from severely defoliated plants (19%) was significantly larger than from leniently defoliated (12%) and non-defoliated plants (6%). Moreover, the fraction of stolon N determined as dead in the spring was 63% for severely defoliated as compared to 14% for non-defoliated plants. Accumulation in absolute terms of new leaf N during the spring was highly correlated to total plant N in early spring (R2 = 0.86), but the growth rates relative to plant N present in early spring were not and, consequently, were similar for all treatments. The amount of inorganic N in the soil after snowmelt and the N uptake in plant root simulator probes (PRSTM) during the spring were small, suggesting that microbial immobilisation, leaching and gas emissions may have been important pathways for N lost from plant tissue.  相似文献

Synopsis We experimentally manipulated fish grazing pressure to determine whether fish herbivory played an important role in the structure of a Costa Rican stream. Non-planktonic plant matter represented a significant percentage ( 25%) of the diet of 77% of the 17 fish species in the community. We prevented fish grazing on macrophytes, tree leaves, and periphyton using fish exclusion cages. Fish grazedPanicum sp., used as a generalized aquatic macrophyte, to the stems after 6 days in control areas, and consumed all or much ofFicus insipida andMonstera sp. leaves when placed in the stream after 48 hours. Plants and leaves experimentally protected by cages remained intact. In periphyton studies, fifty percent more ash free dry weight occurred on 25 × 25 cm floor tiles protected from fish grazing by cages than on tiles in roofless controls exposed to fish grazing for 19 days, suggesting a reduction in periphyton biomass. These results demonstrate that fish herbivory affects macrophyte abundance, and impacts the amount of leaf litter in the stream. Fish herbivory may also have an important effect on overall periphyton biomass. Herbivorous fish species generally represent a larger proportion of the total fish community in tropical compared to temperate streams; thus fish grazing is more likely to have an important influence on plant and animal abundances and distributions in tropical streams.  相似文献

Summary Sandy clay loam soils in the La Roche-Posay area, and the different parts ofTrifolium repens growing on 9 locations, were analyzed for their contents of selenium and 16 other elements. The level of K, P, Se in the young leaves was 2 or 3 times higher than in the old organs. The roots showed the lowest contents for these three elements. By contrast, their content of Al, Fe, As were 10 times higher than in the young leaves. When the content of Se in leaves and roots was low, the contents of P, Al and Fe increased with increasing contents of Se. When the level of Se was high, the reverse was the case.   相似文献

Phaseolus vulgaris plants decapitated above the primary leaves accumulate high cytokinin activity. The major cytokinin in these leaves was identified by Sephadex LH 20 chromatography, sensitivity to -glucosidase and permanganate oxidation, and by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry as 6-(4-O--D-glucosyl-3-methylbutylamino) purine, (dihydrozeatin-O--D-glucoside). Summary The uptake and distribution of phosphorus was examined in tomato plants, cv. Kirdford Cross, grown in peat to which phosphate was added (P2) or omitted (P1). The plants received a liquid feed containing either a high (N2) or low (N1) concentration of ammonium nitrate. Initially, all plants were grown in peat containing an intermediate level of phosphate.There was a rapid net export of P from the leaves of plants transferred to the P1 medium resulting in deficiency symptoms before the fruit on the first truss had ripened. Most of the P absorbed by 11-week-old plants in the N1P2 and N2P2 treatments was located in the developing fruit, in the laminae of the mature leaves and in the lower parts of the stem. In the P1 treatments, the lowest fruit truss was the dominant sink for the limited supply of P, but there was also a significant concentration of P in the shoot apex and in the laminae. Increasing the supply of N to plants in the P2 treatment promoted the transport of P to the shoot and to the fruit trusses and also increased the total P uptake. However, plants in the N2 treatment required a significantly higher level of tissue P to prevent the symptoms of P deficiency occurring in the laminae. Generally, symptoms occurred in laminae of mature leaves containing less than 0.13 per cent P. Increases in concentration of tissue P in response to raising the level of applied P were greatest in the petioles of the mature leaves, and it is suggested that these petioles are the most suitable tissues for the assessment of the P status of tomato plants.  相似文献

The terminal, apical shoot meristem ofN. tabacum cv. Wisconsin 38 normally differentiates into a flower after producing 30 to 40 nodes. The influence of leaves and roots on the regulation of flowering was evaluated by counting the number of nodes produced after removal of leaves or the induction of adventitious roots. Leaf removal has no effect on the number of nodes produced before flower formation. Root induction significantly increases the number of nodes produced before flower formation. The plant behaves as if it were measuring the number of nodes between the meristem and the roots as a means of regulating meristem conversion from vegetative to floral differentiation.  相似文献

In the present study, the cardiovascular activity of the aqueous extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino leaves was investigated in the anaestetized guinea-pigs and has been compared with two of its isolated gypenosides (III, VIII) and with verapamil, a well-known Ca-antagonistic drug. The results obtained showed that the intravenous administration of the decoction of G. pentaphyllum (2.5, 5 and 10mg/kg) produced a protective effect against pitressin-induced coronaryspasm, arrhythmias and pressor response. Extract also increased the dose of ouabain required to cause ventricular tachyarrhythmias and lethality. Further extract reversed ouabain-induced persistent ventricular tachycardia and restored sinus rhythm in a dose-dependent manner. The results obtained have also shown that gypenosides III and VIII caused similar protective effects in both experimental models used; however, the duration of the action is lower than that of the extract containing corresponding quantities of gypenosides III and VIII.  相似文献
