To address the dispensing of this growing volume, a study on utilization of jatropha (Jatropha curcas) deoiled cake through compost production was carried out. The deoiled cake was composted with rice straw, four different animal dung (cow dung, buffalo dung, horse dung and goat dung) and hen droppings in different proportions followed by assessment, and comparison of biochemical characteristics among finished composts. Nutrient content in finished compost was within the desired level whereas metals such as copper, lead and nickel were much below the maximum allowable concentrations. Although a few finished material contained phorbol ester (0.12 mg/g), but it was far below the original level found in the deoiled cake. Such a study indicates that a huge volume of jatropha deoiled cake can be eliminated through composting.  相似文献

The majority of night soil (human excrements) is source separated from other sewage water and treated at night soil treatment plants in Japan. Efforts have been made to achieve material recovery from this organic mass, together with other organic wastes such as kitchen wastes and manure, by expanding the functions at night soil treatment plants. These facilities with expanded function are called ‘sludge retreatment centers’, which are promoted by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. Potential environmental impacts of sludge retreatment using two presently available systems in Japan are analyzed for comparison. Systems compared are: 1) Mebius system, a high-speed fermentation process with methane gas recovery and compost production and 2) a comparable system with a basic composting process. The functional unit for this study is concurrent treatment of 40 t/d of kitchen waste, 40 m3/d of night soil, and 60 m3/d of private sewage treatment tank sludge. Impact assessment on Global Warming (IPCC 1996, 20 yrs.), Acidification Potential (De Leeuv — AP), Eutrophication Potential (De Leeuv- EP) and Resource Index (Fava/SETAC & Heijungs) all indicated that sludge retreatment with Mebius system provides a better environmental performance. The main reasons are: 1) production of power using recovered methane and 2) reduction of sludge volume by digestion, which leads to reduction of fuel required for sludge drying. The collection and treatment of night soil and kitchen wastes involves many economic and social factors. Therefore, more studies with different functional units on these systems should be made to obtain a more complete picture that can be used for decision-making processes. Abstract: Twenty-one wild isolates from two distinct sites and six cultivated strains of Agaricus bisporus were cultivated on a conventional mushroom compost. Their degradative abilities were studied by measuring 12 extracellular enzyme activities produced during mycelial growth. Differences in production of enzyme activities and in compost colonisation were observed between the three groups of strains and within each group. They were used to define the mechanisms of resource allocation in mushroom compost. The ability to grow and produce sporophores on mushroom compost appeared to be linked with the production of a balanced pool of enzymes including moderate levels of polysaccharidases active on straw cell walls and of enzymes able to degrade microbial biomass and microbial products.  相似文献

Summary Paecilomyces inflatus isolated from municipal waste compost was found to have cellulolytic activity in several solid and liquid media. This study was done to reveal the multifarious effects of municipal waste compost on endoglucanase activity of P. inflatus. The highest enzyme activities under the conditions of solid-state fermentation were measured in authentic compost samples compared with wood, straw and bran substrates. In surface liquid cultures glucose, cellobiose, xylan, Avicel cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose (CM-cellulose), starch and citrus pectin were used as carbon sources. All carbon sources supported the growth of P. inflatus. However, only CM-cellulose, cellobiose and pectin noticeably stimulated endoglucanase (EG) activity. Further stimulation of EG activity was obtained in cultures containing 1% CM-cellulose as a carbon source by supplementation with low-molecular mass aromatic compounds vanillin, veratric acid and benzoic acid, and with soil humic acid (SHA). SHA and veratric acid were found to be the most efficient elicitors of the cellulolytic activity. P. inflatus was able to utilize nitrate and ammonium as pure nitrogen sources in media containing cellulose.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between the population dynamics of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA), and changes in the concentrations of nitrogenous compounds during ammonia-rich livestock waste-composting processes. The data showed that ammonia in beef and dairy cow livestock waste-composting piles was slowly oxidized to nitrite and nitrate after approximately 21–35 days under thermophilic or moderately thermophilic and mesophilic conditions. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays showed a relative abundance of betaproteobacterial AOB during ammonia oxidation but did not detect AOA in any composting stage. Furthermore, real-time qPCR and terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analyses for the AOB in two composting processes (beef and dairy cow livestock waste) out of the three studied found that thermophilic or moderately thermophilic uncultured betaproteobacterial AOB from the “compost AOB cluster” contributed to ammonia oxidation during hot composting stages. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analyses of the data from T-RFLP showed that only a few analogous species predominated during composting of beef, dairy cow and pig livestock wastes, and thus, the AOB community structures in the three composting piles operating under different conditions were similar. AOB-targeted clone library analyses revealed that uncultured members of the “compost AOB cluster”, which could be clearly distinguished from the authentic species of the genus Nitrosomonas, were the major constituents of the AOB populations. These results suggested that a limited and unique species of AOB played a role in ammonia oxidation during the composting of ammonia-rich livestock waste.  相似文献

采用间竭式强制通风堆肥法进行的肥堆体积约4m3,堆肥时间为53d的污泥堆肥试验表明,堆肥的第2天即达高温阶段(≥55℃)并能保持8d,平均最高温度达68℃,局部温度达74℃.粪大肠杆菌由开始时的1.41×105个·g-1降至试验结束时的2.32×101个·g-1.污泥堆肥过程中挥发性固体,总有机C、水溶性有机C、固体有机 C/N比和水溶性有机 C/有机 N比下降明显,而 N、P及重金属含量有所升高.随着堆肥的进程,在前1周堆肥过程中产生的氨氮大幅下降,硝酸盐含量随之升高.相应地,pH在第1周内升高,随后降低.堆肥40d左右,水芹(Lepidiumsativum L.)种子发芽指数即可达 80%.综合堆肥过程中堆温和化学与生物学变化特点,表明污泥堆肥在40d左右基本上接近腐熟,50d后达到完全腐熟.产品外观呈黑褐色,蓬松,无明显异味.  相似文献

Heavy metals are common contaminants in stormwater runoff. One of the devices that can be used to effectively and economically remove heavy metals from runoff is a yard waste compost stormwater filter. The primary goal of composting is to reduce waste volume rather than to produce stormwater filter media. Moisture content (MC) and initial pH, the two important parameters in composting, were studied for their effects on yard waste volume reduction and heavy metal adsorption performances of the compost. The main objective of this investigation was to examine whether the conditions that provided high yard waste volume reduction would also result in compost with good heavy metal removal performances. Manila grass was composted at different initial pHs (5–9) and MCs (30–70%) and the composts were used to adsorb cadmium, copper, lead and zinc from water. Results indicated that MC is more critical than initial pH for both volume reduction and production of compost with high metal adsorption performances. The most optimal conditions for the two attributes were not exactly the same but lower MCs of 30–40% and pH 7 or higher tended to satisfy both high volume reduction and effective metal adsorption.  相似文献

Aerobic composting is a common management practice to inactivate pathogens in manure; however, additional research on the role of compost composition in pathogen inactivation is needed. The objective of this study was therefore to determine the effect of the carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio and the presence of ammonium sulfate on inactivation of Salmonella spp. in cow manure-based mixtures composted in a bioreactor under controlled conditions. Compost preparations with an initial C:N ratio of 20:1 required a maximum of 4 days of storage before Salmonellae were inactivated by 7 log10, whereas preparations with C:N ratios of 30:1 and 40:1 C:N required more than 5 and 7 days of storage, respectively. The pH values of both the 20:1 and 30:1 C:N preparations decreased during the onset of composting before increasing to >8. In contrast, pH values of 40:1 C:N preparations increased immediately to >8, generally within the first day of storage. Maximum temperatures observed in 20:1 C:N preparations for inactivation of pathogens were less than 50 °C, and the cumulative heat exposure required for pathogen inactivation in 20:1 C:N preparations was 15-fold less than in 40:1 C:N preparations. Supplementation of compost mixtures with 0.08% ammonium sulfate resulted in slightly higher temperatures; however, these higher temperatures did not translate into more rapid rates of pathogen inactivation.  相似文献

Increasing proportions of coal fly ash were co-composted with municipal green waste to produce manufactured soil for landscaping use. Only the 100% green waste treatment reached a thermophilic composting phase (?50 °C) which lasted for 6 days. The 25% and 50% ash treatments reached 36–38 °C over the same period while little or no self-heating occurred in the 75% and 100% ash treatments. Composted green waste had a low bulk density and high total and macro-porosity. Addition of 25% ash to green waste resulted in a 75% increase in available water holding capacity. As the proportions of added ash in the composts increased, the organic C, soluble C, microbial biomass C, basal respiration and activities of β-glucosidase, L-asparaginase, alkali phosphatase and arylsulphatase enzymes in the composted products all decreased. It could be concluded that addition of fly ash to green waste at a proportion higher than 25% did not improve the quality parameters of manufactured soil.  相似文献

An effective cell lysis method for extraction of bacterial genomic DNA from compost was developed in this study. Enzymatic disruption method, physical–chemical combination method, and commercial kit method were used to extract DNA from compost samples and were compared by analyzing DNA yield and efficient cell lysis. The results showed that all the three methods can be used to extract high-quality DNA from compost, but the enzymatic method had better cell lysis efficiency and DNA yields than others without the use of special equipment and expensive spending. Comparison of different methods for lysing gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis indicated that the enzymatic cell lysis is superior for destroying the gram-positive cell wall. Spin-bind DNA column was used for DNA purification, and the purity of the purified sample was checked by polymerase chain reaction to amplify a region of the 16S rRNA. Results indicated that the part of 16S rRNA were amplified from all the purified DNA samples, and all the amplification products could be digested by the restriction enzyme HhaI.  相似文献
