In a survey of eight lake systems located in north-central Florida, total zooplankton abundance showed a strong positive correlation (r2=0.87, a=0.01) with trophic state. Zooplankton abundance averaged 1.0 × 105 organisms · m–2 in oligotrophic systems and up to 8.2 × 105 organisms · m–2 in the eutrophic systems. Seasonal variations in total abundance were greatest in the eutrophic lakes where rotifers dominated and periodically produced sharp population peaks (approaching 2.0 × 106· m–2). In contrast, the more oligotrophic systems had relatively stable levels of total abundance and were dominated by copepods. Diversities of the major taxa in the lakes were variable with one to three species of copepods, zero to four species of cladocera, and two to seven species of rotifers dominant at any one time. Planktonic cladoceran communities were often composed of only one or two species. Low cladocera diversity in these subtropical systems was suggestive of increased predation pressure on this group of crustaceans. Six genera of Clad ocera (Diaphanosoma, Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia, Moina, Bosmina, Bosminopsis), each of them usually with only one species were found in Lake D. Helvecio, a natural valley lake located in the eastern part of Brazil. Diurnal migratory movements of the organisms observed in this lake showed a different pattern in different species. Closely related species, which explore the same food source, live in different layers, thus avoiding interspecific competition. The migratory behaviour of the species was studied mainly in relation to temperature and oxygen distribution in the lake. Thus, analyses were made in the summer (January, 1978) when a strong stratification occurs with the establishment of a thermocline and an oxycline. The hypertrophic Lake Zwemlust, a small water body used as a swimming pool, was characterized by algal blooms in summer, reducing the Secchi disk transparency to less than 0.3 m. Since in The Netherlands a Secchi disk transparency of 1 m is obligatory for swimming waters, corrective measures were called for to improve the light climate of the lake. In March, 1987, as an experiment, the lake was drained by pumping out the water to facilitate fish elimination. Planktivorous and benthivorous fish species, which were predominant, were removed by seine- and electro-fishing. After the lake had refilled by seepage it was restocked by a new simple fish community comprising pike (Esox lucius) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) only. Stacks of willow twigs (Salix) and macrophytes (roots ofNuphar lutea and seedlings ofChara globularis) were introduced into the lake as spawning grounds and refuges for the pike against cannibalism and as shelter for the zooplankton. The effects of this food web manipulation on the light climate, phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish, macrophytes, macrofauna and on the nutrient concentrations were monitored during 1987 and 1988. In summer 1987, despite of high nutrient concentrations, the phytoplankton density was low, due to control by zooplankton, causing a Secchi disk transparency of 2.5 m, the maximum depth. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were low (<5 g Chl.l–1), blooms of cyanobacteria did not occur and a shift from rotifers to cladocerans took place. In 1988, however, also some negative effects were noticed. Macrophytes and filamentous green algae reached a much higher biomass (50–60% cover of the lake bottom) than in 1987; some species, growing through the entire water column, interfered with the lake's recreational use. Associated with the macro-vegetation and possibly with the absence of larger cyprinids, the diet of which also comprises snails, a large scale development of the snail population, among themLymnaea peregra var.ovata took place. This species is known to act as an intermediate host of the bird-parasitizing trematodeTrichobilharzia ocellata, the cercariae of which cause an itching sensation at the spot of penetration of the human skin, accompanied by rash (schistosome dermatitis or swimmers' itch); in July, 1988, about 40% of the bathers complained about this itching. A positive effect of the macrophytes and filamentous green algae was the high uptake of nitrogen, resulting in a low nitrogen concentration in the lake and growth limitation of the phytoplankton population by nitrogen in the summer of 1988. In 1988 the cladocerans were abundant in April only; and unlike in 1987, in the summer of 1988 there was a shift from cladocerans to rotifers. Therefore, only in early spring (April) zooplankton grazing controlled phytoplankton growth and in summer nitrogen limitation was the major controlling factor, keeping chlorophyll-a concentrations low. 相似文献

Eutrophication of Dutch lakes has led to massive algal growth, disappearance of most of the macrophytes and disturbance of the food chain. The pike population has fallen sharply and bream developed very strongly, in the absence of this predator. Eutrophication problems are primarily being tackled by reducing nutrient loading. Restoration of water quality, however, seems to be impeded by the present structure of the food chain,i.e. the large bream stock. Biomanipulation, especially fish stock control with the aim of reducing the bream stock and increasing that of predatory fish, can accelerate the process of restoration. For the further development of biomanipulation it is very important that water authorities and managers of fish stocks agree on a common strategy. 相似文献

One male and one female lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush , were held in a laboratory tank simulating a natural spawning environment. Their behaviour during their reproductive period was videotaped each day for 2 h at dusk. The fish activities were classified into seven types: resting, casual swimming, side-thrusting, chase, chase-nudge, body alignment, shuddering. As the reproductive period progressed the fish became more generally active with a marked increase in interactive behaviours such as pursuit of the female by the male (chasing, chasing-nudging). Around spawning time, shuddering and body alignment activity reached apeak. Each fish was equipped with an internally implanted radiotelemetry package able to detect and transmit continuously over the course of each day signals that reflect production of the electromyograms (EMGs) that accompany fish axial muscle activity (high muscular activity gives low pulse interval times in milliseconds). The lowest EMG pulse intervals corresponded with what, from the video records, appeared to be the time of highest physical activity during the reproductive period–viz. that associated with spawning activity during dusk. Other times during the diel cycles over the reproductive period, except for times of roughly similar duration during early morning (which may also be reflections of spawning) showed considerably lower muscular activity. It is concluded that transmitted EMG records could probably be used as indicators of spawning activity of lake trout in at least some of those places in the field where they cannot normally be located by visual means. 相似文献

As part of the Russian-Finnish research studies on Lake Ladoga, joint expeditions were organized in 1992 and 1993. Water samples were collected for intercalibration of chemical analysis methods and to monitor the chemical quality of the lake water.In August of 1992 water samples were taken from northern Lake Ladoga for intercalibration of Russian and Finnish analysis methods. In August 1993 water samples were collected from 23 sampling stations in all parts of the lake; some of these were also used for intercalibration purposes.The oxygen, colour and CODMn results were at the same level in the intercalibration. In 1993, the Ptot results obtained were acceptable. In Ntot, Fe and Mn analysis there seemed to be systematic and random errors between some results.The Secchi depth ranged from 1.5 m to 3.3 m. The average concentrations for the total phosphorus ranged from 15 µg 1–1 to 29 µg 1–1. The total nitrogen values were from 620 µg 1–1 to 690 µg 1–1. The N:P ratio varied from 24 to 40. 164 taxa were identified in the net zooplankton of the pelagial of L. Peipsi-Pihkva in 1909–1987, including 3 species of protozoans, 74 species of rotifers, 58 species of cladocerans, 28 species of copepods and 1 mollusc. One rotifer species, Ploesoma peipsiense Mäemets et Kutikova, has been described as new for science here. The zooplankton of L. Peipsi-Pihkva is remarkably rich in species including rarities in Estonia: Limnosida frontosa, Drepanothrix dentata, Bythotrephes longimanus, B. cederstroemi etc. Due to its large surface area, L. Peipsi-Pihkva provides a large scale of biotopes of a diverse trophic state and humic content, which support species with different ecological requirements. Most of the aquatory of the lake has lately been mesotrophic, favouring the coexistence of indicators of oligo- and mesotrophic state and species preferring a higher trophic state. The occurrece of 10 species of the genus Bosmina including B. berolinensis, B. gibbera, B. lilljeborgi, B. thersites and B. crassicornis, sparse in Estonian lakes, is the most noteworthy feature of the zooplankton of L. Peipsi-Pihkva. The coexistence of B. coregoni and B. berolinensis, B. gibbera, B. lilljeborgi etc. which were earlier regarded as subspecies of B. c. coregoni proves that they are different species producing usually no hybrids. The species composition was subjected to certain changes during the years under consideration. Larvae of Dreissena were first found in zooplankton in 1962. The oligo-mesotrophic indicator Holopedium gibberum occurred in the lake in 1909–1964, but was lacking in later samples. 相似文献

Bacterial abundance and production in a vertical profile in Lake Kariba (17dgS), Zimbabwe, were affected by solar irradiance. At the surface, 1.87 × 109 bacteria 1–1 were found and abundance peaked at 10 m (2.5 × 109 bacteria l-1), then decreasing with depth. Bacterial reproduction at the surface(0.145 µg C1–1 h–1) was nearly four times less than the production at 10 m although bacterial numbers were only 26% less. Thus, bacterial production per cell was lower at the surface than deeper down, suggesting that bacterial production is inhibited at the surface.Bacterial production in GF/F filtered lake water in Whirl Pack bags showed an exponential decrease down to 3 m depth. The inhibition was well in accordance with light extinction in the UV region. Phosphatase activity was low in light exposed bags compared to dark, indicating photolysis of extracellular enzymes, or phototransformation of recalcitrant DOM, which substitutes enzyme activity. Hypolimnetic enzyme activity was less affected by solar light than epilimnetic. 相似文献
