Glycoalkaloids were used as evidence of the affinities of nine taxa of Solanum Series Megistacrolobum and related potato cultigens from western Bolivia. S. boliviense, S. sanctae-rosae and S. toralapanum contain the commertetraose sugar moiety and appear to represent a relatively wild group within the Series. S. megistacrolobum, S. sogarandinum and S. raphanifolium show anomolous glycoalkaloid profiles that probably reflect hybridization associated with human disturbance. Primitive forms of the S. χ ajanhuiri cultigen are indistinguishable chemicaliy from conspecific weeds that were previously classified as S. megistacrolobum. Variation in total glycoalkaloid content within Series Megistacrolobum likely reflects direct selection by humans for reduced glycoalkaloid levels during the domestication process. 相似文献

Silver ions inhibit the ethylene-stimulated production of ripening-related mRNAs in tomato 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Abstract. Silver ions effectively inhibited both the initiation and the continuation of tomato ( Lyeopersicon esculentum Mill) ripening. Studies of protein synthesis in vivo showed that application of 2 mol m−3 silver thiosulphate to mature green fruit prevented the appearance of several novel proteins associated with ripening, including the softening enzyme polygalacturonase. However, total protein synthesis, as judged by the incorporation of [35 S] methionine into proteins, continued unabated after silver treatment. Ripening was also arrested when silver was supplied after ripening had begun. The accumulation of several ripening-related mRNAs, including that for polygalacturonase, was studied by translation in vitro and using cDNA clones as hybridization probes. Silver was shown to prevent the appearance of polygalaturonase mRNA when supplied to mature green fruit and to cause a rapid reduction in the concentration of mRNA for polygalacturonase and other ripening-related proteins when supplied after ripening had begun. It is proposed that silver exerts its effects due to interaction with the ethylene perception mechanism. The results suggest that perception of ethylene is vital not only for the initiation of ripening but also for the continued expression of genes required for ripening. 相似文献

Abstract. In callus cultures of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia , the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase was repressed by glucose, whereas, on the contrary, carbon and energy source deprivation induced a remarkable increase in specific activity. Definition of these two opposite types of response was made possible by the use of glycerol as a non-repressing carbon source: in this condition, glutamate dehydrogenase activity reached an intermediate level, which was similar to the derepressed values of activity obtainable when cultures were allowed to exhaust the glucose supply in the medium. Isoelectric focusing analysis revealed the existence of three different isoenzymatic patterns which could be correlated to the three different levels of specific activity: repressed (glucose), induced (carbon starvation) and intermediate (glycerol). Repression affected mainly the four more cathodic bands which were predominant in non-repressed conditions. The possible catabolic role of these isoenzymes is discussed. 相似文献

Six-day-old tobacco seedlings rapidly incorporated and metabolized exogenously supplied [4-14C]-sitosterol, but none of the radioactivity was recovered from stigmasterol. However, exogenously supplied [2-14C]-mevalonic acid was incorporated into both sitosterol and stigmasterol. Based on these results it is suggested that the biosynthetic pathway of stigmasterol is not via sitosterol but that both sterols have a common precursor. 相似文献

Aldehyde dehydrogenase has been purified to homogeneity from mitochondria of potato tubers and pea epicotyls. Although the enzyme had a high affinity for glycolaldehyde it also had a high affinity for a number of other aliphatic and arylaldehydes. It is proposed that the codification glycolaldehyde dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.1.22) should be abandoned in favour of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.1.3). The purified enzyme showed esterase activity and had properties similar to those reported for the mammalian mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase. Although the natural substrate(s) for the enzyme is not known, the kinetic properties of the enzyme are consistent with it playing a role in the oxidation of acetaldehyde, glycolaldehyde and indoleacetaldehyde. 相似文献

Fruits of tomato incorporated [2-14C]mevalonic acid lactone into the steroidal glycoalkaloid α-tomatine. Young fruits showed the greatest alkaloid-synthesizing ability but this decreased as the fruits developed. Analysis of sap exuded from fruit stalks and also application of[4-14C]cholesterol to leaves confirmed that tomatine is not transported into fruits from vegetative organs. Accumulation of this alkaloid in fruits thus appears entirely due to synthesis. Excised fruits of all developmental stages degraded injected [14C]tomatine and rates were directly related to fruit age. The pattern of accumulation/decline in fruit tomatine may be explicable on the basis of changing capacity for synthesis/degradation during development. Label from injected [14C]tomatine was present mainly in chlorophylls and carotenoids where it increased with time as that in tomatine decreased. The significance of the relationship between tomatine disappearance and carotenoid development is briefly discussed. The aglycone tomatidine was not detected in green fruits but a Δ16-5α-pregnenolone-like compound was. 相似文献

We examined the effect of soil NH4+ and NO3? content upon the root systems of field-grown tomatoes, and the influence of constant, low concentrations of NH4+ or NO3? upon root growth in solution culture. In two field experiments, few roots were present in soil zones with low extractable NH4+ or NO3?; they increased to a maximum in zones having 2μg-N NO3? g?1 soil and 6 μg-N NO3= g?1 soil, but decreased in zones having higher NH4+ or NO3? levels. Root branching was relatively insensitive to available mineral nitrogen. Plants maintained in solution culture at constant levels of NH4+ or NO3?, had similar shoot biomass, but all root parameters – biomass, length, branching and area – were greater under NH4 nutrition than under NO3?. These results suggest that the size of root system depends on a functional equilibrium between roots and shoots (Brouwer 1967) and on the balance between soil NH4+ and NO3?. 相似文献

Specimens ofMetriona elatior were found feeding on leaves of the silverleaf nightshade,Solanum elaeagnifolium, from the eastern of Uruguay since 1984. According to a field study the young leaves were skeletonized since spring to early
autumn by larvae and adults. Oothecae and pupae were found mainly on old leaves. The egg mean volume was of 0.614 mm3. Young plants of the weed were always killed after massive natural infections ofM. elatior. Therefore, this tortoise leaf-beetle may be studied as a potential biocontrol agent on populations ofS. elaeagnifolium.
