It has been shown that many natural enemies of herbivorous arthropods use herbivore induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) to locate their prey. Herbivores can also exploit cues emitted by plants infested with heterospecifics or conspecifics. A study was conducted to test whether green bean HIPVs as well as odours emitted directly by spider mites influenced the orientation behaviour of the predatory mirid bug, Macrolophus caliginosus and its prey, Tetranychus urticae in a Y-tube olfactometer. Our results show that both spider mites and M. caliginosus preferred spider mite infested green bean plants to uninfested plants. For M. caliginosus this response was mediated by HIPVs whereas for T. urticae it was mediated through a composite response to both HIPVs and odours emitted directly by the conspecifics (and their associated products). The results may be of use in practical biocontrol situations, through e.g., plant breeding for improved HIPV production, conditioning of mass-reared predators to appropriate cues, and employment of “push–pull-strategies” by using HIPVs.

Plants respond to herbivory through different defensive mechanisms. The induction of volatile emission is one of the important and immediate response of plants to herbivory. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) are involved in plant communication with natural enemies of the insect herbivores, neighboring plants, and different parts of the damaged plant. Release of a wide variety of HIPVs in response to herbivore damage and their role in plant-plant, plant-carnivore and intraplant communications represents a new facet of the complex interactions among different trophic levels. HIPVs are released from leaves, flowers, and fruits into the atmosphere or into the soil from roots in response to herbivore attack. Moreover, HIPVs act as feeding and/or oviposition deterrents to insect pests. HIPVs also mediate the interactions between the plants and the microorganisms. This review presents an overview of HIPVs emitted by plants, their role in plant defense against herbivores and their implications for pest management.

We used tomato genotypes deficient in the jasmonic acid (JA) pathway to study the interaction between the production of herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) that serve as information cues for herbivores as well as natural enemies of herbivores, and the production of foliar trichomes as defence barriers. We found that jasmonic acid‐insensitive1 (jai1) mutant plants with both reduced HIPVs and trichome production received higher oviposition of adult leafminers, which were more likely to be parasitized by the leafminer parasitoids than JA biosynthesis spr2 mutant plants deficient in HIPVs but not trichomes. We also showed that the preference and acceptance of leafminers and parasitoids to trichome‐removed plants from either spr2 or wild‐type (WT) genotypes over trichome‐intact genotypes can be ascribed to the reduced trichomes on treated plants, but not to altered direct and indirect defence traits such as JA, proteinase inhibitor (PI)‐II and HIPVs levels. Although the HIPVs of WT plants were more attractive to adult insects, the insects preferred trichome‐free jai1 plants for oviposition and also had greater reproductive success on these plants. Our results provide strong evidence that antagonism between HIPV emission and trichome production affects tritrophic interactions. The interactions among defence traits are discussed.

Allelochemicals are storing in different location in plant tissues as inactive form. Number of identified compounds may now exceed 100,000. Environmental factors have an effect on allelochemicals concentration in plants. Many allelochemicals classified as toxins or deterrents for herbivorous insects. Allelochemicals play a major role in feeding or ovipositing stimulants for some specialist insects. Consumption and assimilation of herbivorous insects had affected by the type of allelochemicals in host plants. Allelochemicals have an acute or chronic toxicity on herbivorous insects. Most specialist herbivorous insects rely heavily of ingested plant allelochemicals. Plant allelochemicals may influence an insect's susceptibility to pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and nematode. Specialists herbivorous insect can be using the allelochemicals in their host plants as protection against natural enemies. Some herbivorous insects are synthesising the aggregation, attracting, alarm or mating pheromone from the allelochemicals in their host plants.

Plants emit volatile compounds that can act as a communication method to insects, neighboring plants and pathogens. Plants respond to leaf and root damage by herbivores and pathogens by emitting these compounds. The volatile compounds can deter the herbivores or pathogens directly or indirectly by attracting their natural enemies to kill them. The simultaneous damage of plants by herbivores and pathogens can influence plant defense. The induced plant volatiles can also make neighboring plants ready for defense or induce defense in parts distant from the damaged area of the same plant. Belowground root herbivory can alter the defense response to aboveground leaf herbivory. In addition, most plants normally emit volatile compounds from their flowers that directly attract foraging mutualistic insects for nectar, which in turn perform the very important function of pollination for subsequent reproduction. The volatile compounds emitted from the floral and vegetative parts of plants belong to three main classes of compounds: terpenoids, phenylpropanoids/benzenoids, and C6-aldehydes (green-leaf volatiles). The volatile phytohormones methyl salicylate and methyl jasmonate serve as important signaling molecules for communication purposes, and interact with each other to optimize the plant defense response. Here we discuss and integrate the current knowledge on all types of communication between plants and insects, neighboring plants and pathogens that are mediated through plant volatiles.

Indirect plant defence mechanisms enhance the effectiveness of natural enemies of herbivores. Herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) attract the parasitoids of insect herbivores as shown both in numerous choice tests conducted under laboratory conditions and in relatively few common‐garden setups in agro‐ecosystems. However, the importance of this indirect defence trait at higher levels of biological organization has yet to be investigated through natural field experiments. Here, we report a field experiment of larval parasitism of two cyclic geometrid defoliators in herbivore‐damaged and fairly intact mountain birch Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii under natural conditions. Parasitism rates in larvae of the autumnal (Epirrita autumnata) and winter moth (Operophtera brumata) exposed for 30 h on defoliated trees were more than twice as high as those on control trees. This finding indicates that hymenopteran parasitoids were attracted to previously defoliated trees by some cues from the host plants, HIPVs being the most likely candidates. The third trophic level should thus be considered in natural plant herbivore interactions. Furthermore, parasitoids and food resources are key factors in the population regulation of forest insect pests, and indirect plant defences could be important in their interactions. Our research also emphasizes the quality of control treatments in field experiments, since immediate plant responses easily obscure the results as soon as control trees become infested by herbivorous insects.

The costs and benefits of defensive traits in plants can have an ecological component that arises from the effect of defenses on the natural enemies of herbivores. We tested if glandular trichomes in Datura wrightii, a trait that confers resistance to several species of herbivorous insects, impose an ecological cost by decreasing rates of predation by the natural enemies of herbivores. For two common herbivores of D. wrightii, Lema daturaphila and Tupiocoris notatus, several generalized species of natural enemies exhibited lower rates of predation on glandular compared to non-glandular plants. Lower rates of predation were associated with reductions in the residence time and foraging efficiency of natural enemies on plants with glandular trichomes, but not with direct toxic effects of glandular exudate. Our results suggest that the benefit of resistance to herbivores conferred by glandular trichomes might be offset by the detrimental effect of this trait on the natural enemies of herbivores, and that the fitness consequences of this trichome defense might depend on the composition and abundance of the natural-enemy community.
