The larvae ofPlutella xylostella were fed on five wild crucifers,Capsella bursa-pastoris, Lepidium virginicum, Cardamine flexuosa, Rorippa indica, R. islandica and a crop, cabbage. The developmental period of the immature stages, adult longevity, preoviposition period, fecundity and morphometrical characters of the adults were measured. The flight activity of the adults was also measured by the tethered flight method. All the wild plants except forR. islandica were less suitable host plants than cabbage, and larvae which were fed on these less suitable plants emerged as smaller adults with shorter wings. The smaller female adults had lower fecundity but a higher flight activity. Smaller adults measured in terms of their pupal weight among individuals fed on the same host plant had longer wings. These smaller adults with longer wing flew more actively.

A comparative study was made of the fertility, fecundity and longevity ofTrichogramma confusum Vigg. reared in the laboratory on eggs ofCorcyra cephalonica St., vs. a wild type population of the same species. Laboratory reared females showed a significantly higher degree of sterility than wild-type females while sterility amongst males did not differ significantly. Under laboratory conditions, laboratory reared females lived longer than wild-type females but produced fewer progeny as indicated by life-table data suggesting that their “effective” life is shorter. The high precentage of sterility amongst laboratory reared females should be taken into account when making inundative field releases. As size of the host may influence the fecundity and behaviour of laboratory rearedTrichogramma, the use of a suitable host which produces larger eggs would have to be considered in any mass-breeding programme.

A population of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) (DBM) was recently found to infest sugar snap- and snowpeas in the Rift Valley in Kenya, causing heavy damage. The influence of this host shift on host location preferences of two parasitoids was investigated: The indigenous Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren) regarded as a relative generalist, and Diadegma semiclausum(Hellen), regarded as highly specific to DBM. The attractiveness of different odour sources was compared for the two parasitoid species using a Y-tube olfactometer using naïve females. D. mollipla was not significantly attracted to any cabbage related odours but showed a significant preference for the DBM infested pea plant when tested against clean air. D. semiclausum was highly attracted to the undamaged cabbage plant and odours related to cabbage. On the other hand, peas infested with DBM, showed no attractiveness to this parasitoid. The results showed that specialisation of D. semiclausum is mediated by host plant signals, associated with crucifers, which are not encountered in DBM feeding on peas. For D. mollipla, although a frequent parasitoid on DBM in crucifers, volatiles emitted by these plants might not be used as primary cues for host location. This species may respond largely to chemicals yet unknown and associated with a variety of plant-herbivore interactions.

The host-searching behavior of Diadegma semiclausum, a parasitoid of diamondback moth (DBM) larvae, was studied in a wind tunnel. Wasps flew preferentially to a cabbage plant, freshly infested by 1 DBM larva, or one freshly infested by 10 DBM larvae, than to an intact plant. There was no significant difference between wasps?? responses to plants infested by different DBM larvae densities. We also found that the duration since the last infestation by 10 DBM larvae (1 or 3?days) negatively affected the attractiveness of infested plants. We also studied the time wasps spent searching for larvae on a cabbage plant (residence time). The wasps spent ca. 400?s on a plant freshly infested by 1 larva. Residence time was significantly longer (ca. 1,200?s) on a plant freshly infested by either 5 or 15 DBM larvae. Residence time of D. semiclausum on a plant freshly infested by 5 DBM larvae was significantly longer than on a previously infested plant (1 or 3?days after the last infestation). These results showed that host densities on a plant and the duration since their last infestation affected the host-searching behavior of D. semiclausum.

Studying antagonistic coevolution between host plants and herbivores is particularly relevant for polyphagous species that can experience a great diversity of host plants with a large range of defenses. Here, we performed experimental evolution with the polyphagous spider mite Tetranychus urticae to detect how mites can exploit host plants. We thus compared on a same host the performance of replicated populations from an ancestral one reared for hundreds of generations on cucumber plants that were shifted to either tomato or cucumber plants. We controlled for maternal effects by rearing females from all replicated populations on either tomato or cucumber leaves, crossing this factor with the host plant in a factorial design. About 24 generations after the host shift and for all individual mites, we measured the following fitness components on tomato leaf fragments: survival at all stages, acceptance of the host plant by juvenile and adult mites, longevity, and female fecundity. The host plant on which mite populations had evolved did not affect the performance of the mites, but only affected their sex ratio. Females that lived on tomato plants for circa 24 generations produced a higher proportion of daughters than did females that lived on cucumber plants. In contrast, maternal effects influenced juvenile survival, acceptance of the host plant by adult mites and female fecundity. Independently of the host plant species on which their population had evolved, females reared on the tomato maternal environment produced offspring that survived better on tomato as juveniles, but accepted less this host plant as adults and had a lower fecundity than did females reared on the cucumber maternal environment. We also found that temporal blocks affected mite dispersal and both female longevity and fecundity. Taken together, our results show that the host plant species can affect critical parameters of population dynamics, and most importantly that maternal and environmental conditions can facilitate colonization and exploitation of a novel host in the polyphagous T. urticae, by affecting dispersal behavior (host acceptance) and female fecundity.

Host plant-mediated orientation and oviposition by diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) and its predator Chrysoperla carnea Stephens (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) were studied in response to four different brassica host plants: cabbage, (Brassica oleracea L. subsp. capitata), cauliflower (B. oleracea L. subsp. botrytis), kohlrabi (B. oleracea L. subsp. gongylodes), and broccoli (B. oleracea L. subsp. italica). Results from laboratory wind tunnel studies indicated that orientation of female DBM and C. carnea females towards cabbage and cauliflower was significantly greater than towards either broccoli or kohlrabi plants. However, DBM and C. carnea males did not orient towards any of the host plants. In no-choice tests, oviposition by DBM did not differ significantly among the test plants, while C. carnea layed significantly more eggs on cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli than on kohlrabi. However, in free-choice tests, oviposition by DBM was significantly greater on cabbage, followed by cauliflower, broccoli, and kohlrabi, while C. carnea preferred to oviposit on cabbage and cauliflower, followed by broccoli and kohlrabi. The predation rates of DBM by C. carnea on kohlrabi and broccoli were not significantly different from one another, but were significantly higher than that on cabbage and cauliflower. When two types of plant, intact and injured, were available to adult DBM, female oviposition was significantly greater on injured plant leaves than on intact plants leaves. Similarly, C. carnea oviposition was significantly greater on injured plant leaves than on intact leaves. Implications regarding the possible role of green leaf volatiles in host selection/preference, as well as in tritropic interactions, are discussed.

The flight activity of adults of a migrant skipper (Parnara guttata guttata) was measured on the day of emergence, and at 4 and 7 days after emergence by a flight mill and the activity was compared among the three seasonal forms which emerged under 12, 14 and 16 hr photoperiods. The flight activity of adults reared under 12 and 14 hrs was higher than that under 16 hr especially on the day of emergence. The flight activity of males under 12 and 14 hrs was higher on the day of emergence and decreased at 4 and 7 days. The activity of males under 16 hr was maintained at a low and constant level. The activity of females under 12 and 14 hrs increased or was constant on the days after the emergence, on the other hand, the activity of females under 16 hr was highest at 4 days after the emergence. The wing size did not affect the flight activity. The oviposition characteristics of females reared under the three photoperiods was compared. The female under 14 hr has a longer preoviposition period and lesser fecundity than that under 16 hr. The female under 12 hr has intermediate values of the former two. The size of eggs laid by females under 12 hr was also intermediate.

The host plant expansion of a diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (DBM) strain to snowpea (Pisum sativum L.) raised the question whether a specialist parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum (DS) could be conditioned to locate and parasitize its host on the new host plant. In a specialist parasitoid a behavioural change towards a plant outside the normal host plant range of its host due to developmental experience is not expected. The responsive behaviour, parasitism rates and fitness of three subsequent DS generations were investigated on the snowpea-strain of DBM. After three generations of DS on the pea 62.5% of females chose an DBM-infested pea plant over DBM infested cabbage. Only 16.4% of cabbage-reared DS was attracted to infested pea. Rearing of the parasitoid in host larvae on peas significantly increased the number of larvae parasitized on this host plant in the first generation; however, there was no further increase in generations 2 and 3. Larval mortality was similar for all parasitoid/DBM combinations on both host plants, but significantly higher mortality occurred in parasitoid pupae from peas. Development time of the parasitoid was slightly prolonged on the pea strain of DBM. The number of females produced by parasitoids reared on the pea strain of DBM was significantly reduced as compared to D. semiclausum reared on the cabbage strain on both host strains. Results show that DS has the potential to change its responsive behaviour in order to locate its host on a new host plant. According to the current view, a specialist parasitoid is not expected to change its reaction to a plant outside the normal host plant range of its host. Within 3 generations, responsive behaviour towards snowpea could be increased. However, fitness trade-offs, especially an extreme shift in sex ratio to males reduced reproductive success.

The braconid wasp Cotesia plutellae is an important larval parasitoid of the diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella, which a major pest of crucifers in the tropics and subtropics. The peripheral olfactory responses of antennal chemoreceptors of C. plutellae to various cruciferous host plants of DBM and host larval body (cuticle) extracts were examined by electroantennogram (EAG) detection and the behavioral response to a concentration of 1% was analyzed in a Y‐tube olfactometer. Females of C. plutellae exhibited dose‐dependant EAG response for all the extracts tested. Antennal stimulation with 0.1 and 1% concentrations elicited stronger EAG responses than lower concentrations for all the extracts. Host plant extracts were more stimulatory to virgin females, while gravid females exhibited increased antennal sensitivity to host larval body extract odors. In the flight orientation studies, virgin females exhibited increased orientation toward host plant extracts, while gravid females oriented more toward host larval body odors. The EAG response profile and the corresponding orientation behavior revealed a differential preference by the parasitoid wasp to host plant and host‐related cues. Mustard and cauliflower extracts were more attractive to females than other extracts. The possible behavioral manipulation of this specialist parasitoid using these extracts for effective biological control of diamondback moth is discussed.

Abstract. The free-flight behaviour of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), the sweet potato whitefly, was investigated in a vertical flight chamber. A mercury-vapour lamp presented from above induced a phototactic flight response. Although flight propensity was comparable from 06.00 to 19.00 hours, flight duration was maximum between 06.00 and 10.00 hours. Males flew longer than females and their mean flight duration remained constant throughout the day. Females flew longer from 06.00 to 13.00 hours than from 13.00 to 19.00 hours. Both sexes were capable of sustaining flight for more than 2h, although less than 5% of those tested did so.
Flight activity also was influenced by age and by host quality. The propensity to take off, proportion exhibiting phototactic orientation and flight duration varied with the age of the whitefly. Host quality influenced the timing of flight behaviour. Whiteflies reared on senescing plants exhibited greater take-off rates and initiated longer phototactic flights up to 4 days following adult eclosion when compared to individuals reared on vegetative plants. Thereafter, individuals reared on vegetative plants exhibited greater response levels. Whiteflies reared on vegetative plants weighed more and survived longer than did individuals reared on senescing plants.
Whiteflies that responded to the overhead light initially exhibited a strong photokinetic and phototactic response. Over the course of the flight, these responses declined and flight instability increased, as indicated by an overall decrease in the mean rate of climb, accompanied by an increase in the variability of this parameter and an increase in horizontal displacement. Although males and females displayed similar flight characteristics, females exhibited a greater rate of climb than did males, and for both sexes, individuals that flew longer than 25 min had a greater rate of climb than did individuals that flew for less than 25 min.

Seasonal variation in plant quality may be intense enough to generate predictable patterns in insect herbivore populations. In order to explain seasonal oscillations in neotropical populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.), we tested the following: (1) if nutritional quality of cabbage (Brassica oleraceae var. capitata), a primary host plant of diamondback moth, adversely affects the performance of this insect in late spring and early summer, when populations decline and go extinct, and (2) if nutritional features of cabbage change with the seasons. We measured the performance of diamondback moth reared on leaves of cabbages grown during the four seasons of the year. Summer plants proved to be worse for the survival of the immature stages and subsequent adult fecundity, but there were no significant differences between the remaining seasons. Our results support the hypothesis that short-lived plants, grown in different seasons of the year in the tropics, have different nutritional and defensive attributes. We analyzed nutritional quality of cabbage leaves from the four seasons, but only total lipids were reduced in summer plants. Neotropical populations of diamondback moth collapse before plant quality decay in the summer. If the diamondback moth is well adapted to the seasonal deterioration of the habitat, including the reduction in the quality of host plants, it is expected that emigration happens before the mortality increases and natality decreases during the summer.

Apolygus lucorum (Heteroptera: Miridae), an important herbivore feeding on a broad range of cultivated and wild plants, always shows a strong preference for flowering host plants. In a prior study, we found A. lucorum fecundity to be higher on flowering plants than on plants still at the vegetative stage. This led us to hypothesize that ovarian development and vitellogenin (Vg) expression in A. lucorum, which are highly correlated with its fecundity, might respond positively to the presence of host plant flowers as food. In this study, two types of plant foods, i.e., cotton terminals and flowers, and cotton terminals only without flowers, were examined. Adult females on terminals with flowers had higher ovarian development levels than those of similar stage held on terminals without flowers. Moreover, adults on terminals with flowers had more follicles per ovary throughout adult life than those held on terminals without flowers, and the length of the most developed ovariole of the former treatment was significantly longer than that of the latter diet. Use of qRT-PCR showed that the expression level of Vg was significantly higher in adults raised on a diet with flowers compared with those raised on the diet without flowers. These results suggest that host plant flowers significantly facilitate ovarian development and Vg gene expression of A. lucorum adults.

Foraging adults of phytophagous insects are attracted by host‐plant volatiles and supposedly repelled by volatiles from non‐host plants. In behavioural control of pest insects, chemicals derived from non‐host plants applied to crops are expected to repel searching adults and thereby reduce egg laying. How experience by searching adults of non‐host volatiles affects their subsequent searching and oviposition behaviour has been rarely tested. In laboratory experiments, we examined the effect of experience of a non‐host‐plant extract on the oviposition behaviour of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella, a specialist herbivore of cruciferous plants. Naive ovipositing DBM females were repelled by an extract of dried leaves of Chrysanthemum morifolium, a non‐host plant of DBM, but experienced females were not repelled. Instead they were attracted by host plants treated with the non‐host‐plant extract and laid a higher proportion of eggs on treated than on untreated host plants. Such behavioural changes induced by experience could lead to host‐plant range expansion in phytophagous insects and play an important role in determining outcome for pest management of some behavioural manipulation methods.

Saturated hydrocarbons (SHC) of five cruciferous host plants viz., cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, knol khol and Brussels sprout and the larvae of diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella reared on these host plants were identified through gas-chromatography. The hydrocarbon profile of host plants and larval body extract of DBM reared on respective host plants revealed a wide variation in quantity as well as quality. Long chain hydrocarbons C26-C30 were detected in all the extracts. In electroantennogram (EAG) studies, SHCs at 10(-3) g dose elicited differential EAG response in the antennal receptors of gravid Cotesia plutellae females. Tricosane (C23) and hexacosane (C26) elicited 10-fold increased EAG response compared to control stimulus. Long chain hydrocarbons C27, C28 and C29 elicited, 6-7 fold increased responses. The sensitivity of antenna was 4-5 folds for C25, C14, C24, C15 and C30, while the short chain hydrocarbons elicited 2-3 fold increased EAG responses. Dual choice flight orientation experiments in a wind tunnel revealed that the gravid C. plutellae females preferred the odour of C16, C26, C29, C15, C21, C23, C30, C27, C24 and C22 as 60-70% females oriented and landed on SHC treated substrate compared to control odour, while the odour of eicosane (C20), pentacosane (C25) and octacosane (C28) were not preferred by the females.

The cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringiBaly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a serious pest of crucifers in China, undergoing an imaginal summer and winter diapause in the soil. The effects of host plants on diapause incidence were tested in the beetle. The ratio of adults entering diapause was significantly low when they fed on the mature leaves of Chinese cabbage Shanghaiqin (Brassica chinesis var communis) than those feeding on Chinese cabbage Suzhouqin (Brassica chinesis var communis), radish (Raphanus sativus var longipinnatus) and stem mustard (Brassicajuncea vat tumida) at 25℃ combined with 13:11 (L: D) h. Fewer adults entered diapause on young leaves compared to physiologically aged and mature radish leaves at 25℃ combined with 13:11 (L: D) h. The effect of host plant species on diapause induction was also evident under continuously dark rearing conditions or at different photoperiods. These experimental results demonstrate that host plant mediation of diapause induction exists in the cabbage beetle. However, at temperatures ≤20℃ or photoperiods of 16:8 (L: D) h combined with 25℃, all individuals entered diapause regardless of the host plants, indicating that the effects of host plants on diapause induction could be expressed only within a limited range of temperatures and photoperiods.

Interactions between Brassica cultivars (cvs) and adult and larval stages of Plutella xylostella L. were examined. In six-way choice oviposition experiments, glasshouse-grown Chinese cabbage cv. Tip Top was preferred to five outdoor-grown temperate cabbage cultivars but was similar to four out of five tropical cultivars. Bionomic studies with neonate larvae on temperate cabbage cultivars showed that mean larval duration was longer and percentage survival less on older compared with younger plants but that plant age or cultivar had little effect on pupal weight. The fecundity of P. xylostella reared on outdoor-grown cabbage cultivars varied ten-fold between the poorest and the best cultivar but plant age had little effect on P. xylostella reared on Chinese cabbage. In a glasshouse experiment, survival of P. xylostella on Chinese cabbage was significantly greater compared with field-grown glossy-leaved, normal bloom green cabbage and red cabbage. In bioassays with neonate larvae, when the leaves were placed vertically instead of horizontally a significant level of intrinsic resistance was revealed for glasshouse and field-grown glossy-leaved cabbage but not for Chinese cabbage. Observed differences in host status to P. xylostella are discussed in relation to the potential for partial plant resistance in control programmes.

Determining the most efficacious method for the release of parasitoids is challenging, depending on the crop area to be covered and the environmental conditions created by the agroecosystem. Release of the parasitoid Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) and the effect of crucifers cropping systems were investigated in relation to diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) control. First, we investigated the dispersal ability of O. sokolowskii. Kale plants were infested with 20, 25, 30 and 35 DBM larvae each, at distances of 0, 8, 16, and 24 m, from a central release point in the field. Second, the effect of a multiple host plant system composed of cabbage, broccoli and Napa cabbage on the parasitism capacity of O. sokolowskii was investigated. Lastly, the parasitism capacity of O. sokolowskii and the colonization rate of DBM were investigated comparing cropping systems composed of either a monoculture of cabbage, or three different intercropping systems: cabbage and green onion, cabbage and cilantro, and cabbage, green onion and cilantro. For all experiments, selected plants were infested with sentinel DBM larvae and caged with mesh that allowed parasitoids to search inside the cages while reducing the impact of opportunists on DBM larvae. Results showed that parasitoids were able to disperse and parasitize P. xylostella at similar rates throughout a field of kale up to 24 m from the release point. Intercropping of cabbages with other crop plants did not negatively affect parasitism rates of O. sokolowskii, which makes it promising for DBM biological control; however it did not interfere with cabbage colonization by DBM.
