Social behavior can influence physiological systems dramatically yet the sensory cues responsible are not well understood. Behavior of male African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, in their natural habitat suggests that visual cues from conspecifics contribute significantly to regulation of social behavior. Using a novel paradigm, we asked whether visual cues alone from a larger conspecific male could influence behavior, reproductive physiology and the physiological stress response of a smaller male. Here we show that just seeing a larger, threatening male through a clear barrier can suppress dominant behavior of a smaller male for up to 7 days. Smaller dominant males being "attacked" visually by larger dominant males through a clear barrier also showed physiological changes for up to 3 days, including up-regulation of reproductive- and stress-related gene expression levels and lowered plasma 11-ketotestesterone concentrations as compared to control animals. The smaller males modified their appearance to match that of non-dominant males when exposed to a larger male but they maintained a physiological phenotype similar to that of a dominant male. After 7 days, reproductive- and stress- related gene expression, circulating hormone levels, and gonad size in the smaller males showed no difference from the control group suggesting that the smaller male habituated to the visual intruder. However, the smaller male continued to display subordinate behaviors and assumed the appearance of a subordinate male for a full week despite his dominant male physiology. These data suggest that seeing a larger male alone can regulate the behavior of a smaller male but that ongoing reproductive inhibition depends on additional sensory cues. Perhaps, while experiencing visual social stressors, the smaller male uses an opportunistic strategy, acting like a subordinate male while maintaining the physiology of a dominant male.

Consort intrusion behavior has been proposed to largely function as a means of preventing or suppressing the reproductive activity of subordinate males. In the Japanese macaques of Arashiyama B troop this behavior was found to be ineffective in influencing female mate choice and affecting differential reproduction. Mainly directed towards the female of the pair intrusion resembled sexual solicitation and appeared to be an extension of consort behavior. Although the intruder male was almost always dominant over the other male, intrusion failed to provide priority of access to the estrous female as she most frequently chose to remain with her current partner. Copulations which were intruded upon were as likely to end in ejaculation as those which were undisturbed. Only a small proportion of intruder male-female pairs mated. Pairs that did mate were likely to have been in consort before or during the period in which intrusion occurred. No significant correlation was found between male rank order and number of possible females impregnated. Individual young, middle to lower ranking males were estimated to have been reproductively the most successful.

Dominant male rats were separated from their colonies and subordinate residents were tested for aggression after a two week period. Subordinate animals showed significant increases in body weight and aggressive behavior toward intruders. Replacement of the previously dominant male led to rank reversals in three of six colonies. To assess whether two weeks of separation from the dominant male was necessary for subordinate males to exhibit aggression towards conspecifics, another intruder test was given following an additional two weeks of social housing. At the conclusion of this test, the more aggressive resident was removed and a naive intruder was immediately introduced into the colony with the subordinate male resident and again at 1, 5, and 10 day intervals. Aggressive posturing by the subordinate resident increased immediately following the removal of the dominant male, and remained at a high level throughout the subsequent intruder tests. In contrast, biting was initially low but increased steadily throughout the period of separation. These findings demonstrated that social or situational changes within a colony can greatly influence the aggression of subordinate males.

Sick animals show a set of organized behavioral changes (sickness behavior), which is the result of a motivational re‐organization of the behavior as a whole. Sickness behavior display can be influenced by the social context. In this work, we sought to investigate the regulation of sickness behavior within a pair of mice in the presence of an intruder mouse. Dominant and subordinate mice were treated with the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and were challenged with the presence of an intruder mouse. LPS effects depended on ranking and social context. Even though dominant mice displayed more agonistic interaction towards the intruder, subordinate mice displayed agonistic behavior towards the intruder when their dominant companion was treated with LPS. The results show that, not only sickness behavior is differentially expressed among different social ranks, but also that sickness behavior is related to different reactions among surrounding animals. These data are relevant for a biological approach to the relation between sickness behavior and social behavior.

Fighting behavior in male crickets is already well described, and some of the mechanisms underlying aggression and aggressive motivation have already been revealed. Much less is known about female/female interactions. Here, we report that adult female crickets that had been isolated for several days readily entered into agonistic interactions with conspecific individuals. Characteristic dyadic encounters between isolated females escalated in a stepwise manner and were concluded with the establishment of a dominant/subordinate relationship. For 15 to 30 minutes following an initial fight, former subordinate females showed a dramatic change in agonistic behavior. If they were paired with the former dominant opponent during this interval, a significant majority did not enter into any aggressive interaction but instead actively avoided the opponent. A similar experience-based and time-dependent increase in avoidance was observed when former subordinate females were paired with unfamiliar na?ve opponents. However, when faced with an unfamiliar subordinate individual in the second encounter, no such increase in avoidance behavior was observed. We propose that the observed changes in the behavior of former subordinate females are the consequence of a change in the general state of arousal and of the recognition of dominance status, but not of individual recognition. The fact that former dominant individuals did not show similar experience-based changes in agonistic behavior suggests that dominant/subordinate relationships between pairs of female crickets are maintained mainly by the behavior of subordinate individuals.

Juveniles of the signal crayfish reside during daylight hours in shelters. At twilight they leave for food, at daybreak they either return or find another shelter. We examined conflicts over burrow ownership. At low densities with equal numbers of shelters and crayfish 1/5 of the burrows were occupied. Increasing both the number of crayfish and shelters improved the occupancy close to 50%. Doubling the number of crayfish in relation to the number of shelters increased the occupancy up to 75%. In an experiment with 30 randomly selected crayfish and 15 sheltering holes available the burrow holders were about 1–2 mm longer in carapace length than those found freely moving in the aquarium. Shelter owners were rarely newly moulted individuals. Size asymmetry (2 mm difference in carapace length) between owner and intruder affected the outcome of the contest over burrow ownership. When intruders were larger than owners, takeovers occurred in about 80% of the cases tested. If the owner was large and the intruder small the takeover frequency was about 20%. When the owner and the intruder were of matching size takeovers were still observed in about 45% of the cases. The outcome of the ownership contest has a true meaning. In a nursery-pond experiment, where low-protein food was randomly scattered all around, no size differences were found in carapace lengths of crayfish juveniles residing in different shelters. However, when high-protein food was introduced in a single spot, owners of burrows were significantly larger and more numerous in the nearby shelters than in the shelters furthest away from the food source. Therefore, when food is unevenly distributed the burrow ownership contests may potentially lead to size asymmetries between individuals. This may lead to large individuals nearby the food growing faster than small individuals further away from the food source, a process likely to further enhance size differences.

The influence of a conspecific competitor on male mating behavior was examined in a Madagascar hissing cockroach, Gromphadorhina portentosa. Previous studies have suggested that both male-male competition and female discrimination during courtship interactions may influence male mating success. Familiar pairs of males with a known social association were placed in an arena with a single virgin female and observed. As expected, subordinate males mated significantly less often than their dominant opponents. In pairs in which one male mated, dominant individuals limited the access of subordinates to females. Dominant males displayed an increased frequency and duration of interaction with the female. However, in pairs where both males remained unmated, the mating behavior of dominant and subordinate males did not differ significantly. As interactions progressed, as in the case of males that remained unmated, subordinate males gained increased access to the female. Mated males tended to be larger than their opponent although within a rank, males that mated were no larger than those that remained unmated. These results are discussed in light of the possible roles of male-male competition and female discrimination during courtship interactions.

Ritualized behaviors that signify acceptance of a dominance relationship and reduce aggression between rivals are a common feature of vertebrate social behavior. Although some invertebrates, including crayfish, lobsters, and ants, display dominance postures, more complex dominance rituals and their effects on fitness have not been reported. We found that crayfish display such a complex ritual, when two males engaged in pseudocopulatory behavior to signify their dominance relationship. This was followed by a reduction in aggression and an increased likelihood of the subordinate's survival. Pseudocopulation was initiated by the eventual dominant and could be accepted or refused by the eventual subordinate. The frequency of aggressive behavior declined significantly during the first hour in all pairs that pseudocopulated but remained high in pairs that did not. Whereas all the subordinate members of pairs that pseudocopulated survived the initial 24 hr of pairing, half of subordinates that did not pseudocopulate were killed during that time. This differential mortality indicates that the reduction of aggression induced by the pseudocopulatory ritual directly enhances the differential survival of male crayfish that engage in this behavior.

Agonistic and non-agonistic behaviors were studied before, during, and after the formation of social status in crayfish. Differences in the expression of a non-agonistic behavior by dominant and subordinate crayfish developed in parallel with the differences in agonistic behaviors that indicate the animals' social status. An increase in burrowing behavior marked the ascendancy of the dominant animal, while an immediate suppression of burrowing paralleled the inhibition of aggressive behavior in the new subordinate. The strikingly similar changes in both agonistic and non-agonistic behaviors following the decision on status suggest related underlying neural mechanisms.

Many cooperatively breeding animals actively defend a territory containing resources such as food and shelter, which are essential for reproduction. Some observations, however, indicate that conflicts between groups are often triggered by the attempts of males or females, or both, to gain extra‐group copulations. We studied interactions between 12 groups of banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) in Uganda to test whether the frequency of inter‐group encounters was linked to the reproductive status of females, and conducted an experiment to examine the responses of individuals to mongooses from other groups. The rate at which focal groups fought with other groups was higher when its females were in estrous, suggesting that many fights take place over access to mates. Both males and estrous females were instrumental in instigating encounters with rival groups, and extra‐group copulation in the midst of a fight was observed on three occasions. We experimentally simulated encounters with foreign individuals by presenting each of six groups with cages containing a male and a female from a rival group. Subordinate males were the first to investigate these ‘intruders’, spent more time around the intruders' cages, and were more aggressive to the intruders than either dominant males or females. Subordinate males directed more attention and aggression towards the male intruder than the female intruder. We suggest that male banded mongooses actively seek extra‐group copulations in pursuit of paternity, while females may actively seek extra‐group copulations as a way of reducing inbreeding depression.
