To assess and improve existing monitoring protocols for sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we used data from 58 radio-collared grouse (46 M, 12 F) monitored within 3 openland landscape types: a xeric, conifer-dominated site, a wetland-dominated site, and a site dominated by low-intensity agriculture. We used lek counts and radio telemetry to determine lek attendance rates, factors affecting lek attendance rates, lek fidelity, and inter-sexual variation in these parameters. Our analysis indicated lek attendance varied with respect to sex of bird, day of year, time after sunrise, and wind speed. Peak male lek attendance rates exceeded those of females by up to 40%, and peak lekking activity for both males and females occurred during the second and third weeks of April. Male lekking activity occurred earlier and was sustained longer than that of females. Lekking activity was negatively related to time of day and wind speed. We observed strong lek fidelity as radio-collared birds attended a primary lek 94% of the time, indicating a low probability of multiple counting of individual birds. We also proposed a method to adjust lek count data for the probability that birds are on a lek during lek counts. Our proposed method can be used by researchers and managers to improve estimates of the number of birds attending a lek by reducing the negative bias associated with observed counts. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.

We carried out a combination of field and laboratory experiments to investigate two possible mechanisms promoting the evolution of lekking in the sandfly, Lutzomyia longipalpis. Males in this species lek on or near hosts that females visit to mate and feed. To test whether the distribution of resources, lek size and female number were positively correlated (a prediction of hotspot models) we manipulated the availability of potential lek sites by varying the numbers of chickens, Gallus gallus domesticus, held in field cages. We then investigated the distribution of males and females across leks formed within these cages and measured males to assess the relationship between male size and lek size. The number of males attracted to a lek increased with the number of hosts present and on average males on larger leks had longer abdomens. The number of females was positively correlated with the number of males present, but the average number of females per male decreased with increasing lek size. In a second experiment, we introduced single females to laboratory leks of different sizes, and compared female latency to mate. Contrary to an explicit prediction of the black hole model, lek size had a direct effect on a female's latency to mate. Females at larger leks encountered and copulated with males sooner than those at smaller aggregations, but the length of time a pair spent courting did not vary with lek size. Our results suggest that the black hole model is unlikely to explain the evolution of lekking in this species. The data instead support the hotspot model as a possible mechanism promoting lekking in L. longipalpis but suggest that female preference for larger leks may need to be invoked to obtain the degree of aggregation observed.

Lek size varies greatly among lekking species. At present there is no explicit theoretical explanation for this diversity. We extend an existing model of optimal lek size that incorporates female mating preferences and male-male contest competition. The model shows that variation in lek size is predicted by the interaction between lek size, overall copulation rate and the proportion of copulations accruing to males of different rank. In species where females prefer to mate on the largest leks and high-ranking males are able to monopolize females irrespective of the size of the lek, the maximum lek size will be large. Conversely, in species where females show weak preference for mating on large leks or increasing lek size quickly results in scramble competition, the maximum lek size will be smaller. Thus, differences between species in lek size may be due largely to differences in the extent to which high-ranking males can monopolize mating opportunities. Leks become unstable and break down when high-ranking males can no longer get their 'expected' copulation success. Therefore, the mechanism that generates male clustering, that is, sexual parasitism of high-ranking males by subordinates, also sets a limit to the largest stable lek size. Leks have recently been defined as male display aggregations that females attend primarily for the purpose of mating. This is an extended version of previous definitions, as a clear-cut definition of leks is difficult to obtain. Four criteria should be verified to identify a lekking species: (i) there is no male parental investment beyond the sperm; (ii) males aggregate at specific sites for display; (iii) the only resource females find on the lek is the male, i.e. the male genes; (iv) females can select her mate(s), although the necessity of this latter condition for lekking species has been highly debated. We applied these criteria to the endangered little bustard Tetrax tetrax, a species that is claimed to show an exploded lek mating system, but for which this has never been fully investigated. We monitored a population of little bustards in western France during 2 years to investigate the two central criteria in the assessment of their mating system: male aggregation in arenas and lack of consistent resources in male territories. We analysed the spatial distribution of little bustard male territories, the individual variation in size, and the land use characteristics of male territories, with particular attention to the habitats that may be considered as defensible resources. Displaying males showed an aggregated spatial distribution over the study area during the 2 years of survey. Male territories were rather large (19+/-16 ha), but a large among-male variability in territory size was observed. Land use within the territories included mainly permanent and semi-permanent crops. The variability in land use among territories suggests also that resources found within male territories were selected according to male needs (food and display) rather than to female needs (permanent crops that are more appropriate for reproduction). The mating system of the little bustard seems to match the general (and extended) definition of leks, at least in some populations. However, limits between resource defence polygyny and extreme exploded or resource-based leks are thin and unclear, and the little bustard is a good example of how lek definitions may be difficult to apply in non clear-cut empirical situations.

In lekking species, males cluster on specific areas for display (the leks) and females generally prefer to copulate with males on large aggregations. The maintenance of leks in which only a few males reproduce might be explained if subordinate males gain indirect fitness benefits. By joining a lek on which relatives are displaying, subordinates might attract more females to the lek thereby increasing the mating opportunities of their kin. In black grouse, a genetic structure among leks has previously been found suggesting that relatives could display together. Using 11 microsatellite loci, we extended this result by testing for the presence of kin structures in nine black grouse leks (101 males). The genetic differentiation among flocks was higher in males than in females, suggesting female-biased dispersal and male philopatry. Because of this genetic structure, males were more related within than among leks. However, the mean relatedness within each lek hardly differed from zero. The lekking males were not more related than random assortments of males from the winter flocks and there were no kin clusters within leks. Thus, black grouse males do not choose to display with and close to relatives. Male philopatry alone was not sufficient to induce elevated levels of relatedness on the leks either because of male partial dispersal or a rapid turnover of the successful males. The indirect fitness benefits associated with males' settlement decision are probably limited compared to the direct benefits of joining large aggregations such as increased current and future mating opportunities.

Targeted lek surveys, in which historically active lekking areas are surveyed over multiple years, are commonly used to monitor lek‐mating birds. Lek surveys are usually used in habitats and species in which individuals are not easily detected when they are not lekking. Unfortunately, lek surveys suffer from a number of shortcomings, most notably the failure to observe lekking individuals when they are near but not actively attending a lek. Like other sources of imperfect detection, inconsistency in lek attendance may bias estimates of annual population sizes or the proportion of lekking arenas active in a given year. In turn, this may result in unreliable estimates of trends, distributions or other parameters of interest. An improved understanding of the factors affecting lek attendance is crucial to improving the efficacy of many lek monitoring programmes and the utility of lek surveys in estimating population and distributional dynamics. We assess variation in lek attendance in the Lesser Prairie Chicken Tympanuchus pallidicinctus using a subset of data from a long‐term monitoring programme in eastern New Mexico, USA. Focusing on lek‐years in which at least one male was observed, we used generalized linear models to assess the influence of lek size and survey and environmental characteristics on the probability that at least one male was observed in attendance. Our best‐supported model provided evidence for influences of each of these sources of variation. Models suggested that surveyors may improve the likelihood of detecting lek attendance by making small changes to survey duration, targeted survey dates and by considering environmental factors such as weather, habitat and human disturbance. In addition to improving detection, consideration of lek attendance patterns and associated behaviours may improve estimation for more effective conservation in a variety of lekking bird species.

We present a model of a male–female evolutionary game on mate-locating behaviour. Two major mating systems are considered: "lek polygyny" (in which males aggregate to wait for females searching for males) and "searching polygyny" (in which males search for females emerging or waiting for males). The model predicts that lek polygyny is favoured (i) when male survivorship during lekking is sufficiently higher than that during mate searching, (ii) when female survivorship while visiting a lek is sufficiently higher than at the emergence site, or (iii) when searching efficiency is higher at a lek than at an emergence site. Furthermore, the model shows that a reduction in the reproductive value of females later in the day, which prevents males from performing riskier mate-locating behaviour, can result in a change of mating system. In addition, mixed mating systems can be realized as transient states during this shift.

The evolution of social behaviour has puzzled biologists since Darwin. Since Hamilton''s theoretical work in the 1960s it has been realized that social behaviour may evolve through the effects of kinship. By helping relatives, an individual may pass on its genes despite negative effects on its own reproduction. Leks are groups of males that females visit primarily to mate. The selective advantage for males to join such social groups has been given much recent attention, but no clear picture has yet emerged. Here we show, using microsatellite analysis, that males but not females of a lekking bird (the black grouse, Tetrao tetrix) are genetically structured at the lek level. We interpret this structuring to be the effects of strong natal philopatry in males. This has the consequence that males on any specific lek should be more related than expected by chance as indicated by our genetic data. Our results thus suggest that kin selection is a factor that needs to be considered in the evolution and maintenance of the lek mating system in black grouse and sheds new light on models of lek evolution.

This paper is the first to integrate both field and theoretical approaches to demonstrate that fertility benefits can be a direct benefit to females mating on the classical lek. Field data collected for male sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus), a classical lekking species, revealed potential fertility benefits for selective females. Adult males and individuals occupying centrally located territories on the lek were found to have significantly larger testes than juveniles and peripheral individuals. Further, using empirical data from previously published studies of classical lekking grouse species, time-series analysis was employed to illustrate that female mating patterns, seasonal and daily, were non-random. We are the first to show that these patterns coincide with times when male fertility is at its peak. Received: 26 February 1999 / Revised: 13 December 1999 / Accepted: 15 March 2000  相似文献

The spectacular social courtship displays of lekking birds are thought to evolve via sexual selection, but this view does not easily explain the participation of many males that apparently fail to mate. One of several proposed solutions to this 'lek skew paradox' is that kin selection favours low-ranking males joining leks to increase the fitness of closely related breeders. We investigated the potential for kin selection to operate in leks of the greater sage grouse, Centrocercus urophasianus, by estimating relatedness between lekking males using microsatellite DNA markers. We also calibrated these estimates using data from known families. Mean relatedness within leks was statistically indistinguishable from zero. We also found no evidence for local clustering of kin during lek display, although males tended to range closer to kin when off the lek. These results make kin selection an unlikely solution to the lek skew paradox in sage grouse. Together with other recent studies, they also raise the question of why kin selection apparently promotes social courtship in some lekking species, but not in others.
