Photosynthetic rates of outdoor-grown soybean (Glycine max L.Merr. cv. Bragg) canopies increased with increasing CO2 concentrationduring growth, before and after canopy closure (complete lightinterception), when measured over a wide range of solar irradiancevalues. Total canopy leaf area was greater as the CO2 concentrationduring growth was increased from 160 to 990 mm3 dm–3.Photosynthetic rates of canopies grown at 330 and 660 mm3 CO2dm–3 were similar when measured at the same CO2 concentrationsand high irradiance. There was no difference in ribulose bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) activity or ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate(RuBP) concentration between plants grown at the two CO2 concentrations. However, photosynthetic rates averaged 87% greater for the canopiesgrown and measured at 660 mm3 CO2 dm–3. A 10°C differencein air temperature during growth resulted in only a 4°Cleaf temperature difference, which was insufficient to changethe photosynthetic rate or rubisco activity in canopies grownand measured at either 330 or 660 mm3 CO2 dm–3. RuBP concentrationsdecreased as air temperature during growth was increased atboth CO2 concentrations. These data indicate that the increasedphotosynthetic rates of soybean canopies at elevated CO2 aredue to several factors, including: more rapid development ofthe leaf area index; a reduction in substrate CO2 limitation;and no downward acclimation in photosynthetic capacity, as occurin some other species. Exposing plants to long-term CO2 enrichment generally leads to increases in plant biomass, total leaf area and alterations on leaf net photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency. However, the magnitude of such effects is dependent on the availability of other potentially limiting resources. The aim of our study was to elucidate the effects of elevated CO2, applied at different temperature and water availability regimes, on nodulated alfalfa plants. Regardless of water supply, elevated CO2 enhanced plant growth, especially when combined with increased temperature although no differences were detected until 30 days of treatment. Absence of differences in leaf relative growth rate, and gas exchange measurements, suggested that plants grown in a low water regime adjusted their growth to the amount of available water. Elevated CO2 enhanced water use efficiency because of reduced water consumption and a greater dry mass production. Increased dry matter production of plants grown under elevated CO2 and temperature was the result of stimulated photosynthetic rates, greater leaf area and water use efficiency. Lack of CO2 effect on photosynthesis of plants grown at ambient temperature might be consequence of down-regulation phenomena. Plants grown at 700 μmol mol−1 CO2 maintained control nitrogen levels, discarding enhanced nitrogen availability as the main factor explaining enhanced dry matter.  相似文献

Abstract Advanced selections (families 20010 and 20062) of P. radiata D. Don were exposed to either 340 or 660 μmol CO2 mol 1 for 2 years to establish if growth responses to high CO2 would persist during the development of woody tissues. The experiment was carried out in glasshouses and some of the trees at each CO2 concentration were subjected to phosphorus deficiency and to periodic drought. CO2 enrichment increased whole-plant dry matter production irrespective of water availability, but only when phosphorus supply was adequate. The greatest increase occurred during the exponential period of growth and appeared to be tied to increased rates of photosynthesis, which caused accelerated production of leaf area. The increase in whole-plant dry matter production was similar for both families; however, family 20010 partitioned larger amounts of dry weight to the trunks than family 20062. which favoured the roots and branches. Wood density was generally increased by elevated CO2 and for family 20010 this increase was due to thickening of the tracheid walls. Tracheid length was similar at both CO2 levels but differed between families. These results suggest that, as the atmospheric CO2 concentration rises, field-grown P. radiata should produce more dry weight at sites where phosphorus is not acutely deficient, even where drought limits growth; however, increases in wood production are likely only for genotypes which continue to partition at least the same proportion of dry weight to wood in the trunk.  相似文献

Muhlenbergia sobolifera (Muhl.) Trin., a C4 grass, occurs in understory habitats in the northeastern United States. Plants of M. sobolifera were grown at 23 and 30°C at 150 and 700 μmol photons m−2 s−1. The photosynthetic CO2 compensation point, maximum CO2 assimilation, dark respiration and the absorbed quantum use efficiency (QUE) were measured at 23 and 30°C at 2 and 20% O2. Photosynthetic CO2 compensation points ranged from 4 to 14mm3 dm−3 CO2 and showed limited O2 sensitivity. The mean photosynthetic CO2 compensation point of plants grown at 30°C (4·5 mm3 dm−3) was 57% lower and 80% less inhibited by O2 than that of plants grown at 23°C. Photosynthesis was similarly affected by growth temperature, with 70% more O2 inhibition in plants grown at 23°C; suppression over all treatments ranging from 2 to 11%. Unlike typical C4 species, plants of M. sobolifera from both temperature regimes exhibited higher CO2 assimilation rates when grown at low light. Growth temperature and light also affected QUE; plants grown at low light and 23°C had the highest value (0·068 mol CO2/mol quanta). Measurement temperature and growth light regime significantly affected dark respiration; however, O2 did not affect QUE or dark respiration under any growth or measurement conditions. The results indicate that M. sobolifera is adapted to low PPFD, and that complete suppression of photorespiration is dependent upon high growth temperature.  相似文献

Summary Measurements were made of the photosynthetic gas exchange properties and water use efficiency of 19 species of mangrove in 9 estuaries with different salinity and climatic regimes in north eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rates differed significantly between species at the same locality, with the salt-secreting species, Avicennia marina, consistently having the highest CO2 assimilation rates and stomatal conductances. Proportional changes in stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate resulted in constant and similar intercellular CO2 concentrations for leaves exposed to photon flux densities above 800 mol·m-2·s-1 in all species at a particular locality. In consequence, all species at the same locality had similar water use efficiencies. There were, however, significant differences in gas exchange properties between different localities. Stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate both decreased with increasing salinity and with increasing leaf to air vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Furthermore, the slope of the relationship between assimilation rate and stomatal conductance increased, while intercellular CO2 concentration decreased, with increasing salinity and with decreasing ambient relative humidity. It is concluded from these results that the water use efficiency of mangroves increases with increasing environmental stress, in this case aridity, thereby maximising photosynthetic carbon fixation while minimising water loss.Contribution No. 459 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Peach (Prunus persica L.) seedlings were germinated and grown for two growing seasons either in open top chambers (OTC) with ambient (350 μmol mol-1) or elevated (700 μmol mol-1) [CO2], or in an outside control plot, all located inside a glasshouse. The seedlings were grown in 10 dm3 pots and were fertilised once a week following Ingestad principles in order to supply mineral nutrients at free access rates. In the second growing season, rapid onset of water stress was imposed on rapidly growing peach seedlings by withholding water for a four-week drying cycle. In elevated [CO2], seedlings had a total dry mass which was 33% higher than that in ambient [CO2]. This increase was largely a consequence of increased height growth. [CO2] and irrigation treatments had only small effects on allocation, and there was no increase in root allocation with low water availability possibly as consequence of the high-nutrient regime. Specific leaf area was significantly reduced in elevated [CO2], and probably resulted from increases in starch concentrations. Stomatal conductance (g s) was not affected by elevated [CO2] both in well-watered and water-stressed seedlings. The combination of increased assimilation rate (A) and unchanged g s led to large increases in intrinsic water use efficiency in response to elevated [CO2]. The A/C i curves were used to derive the parameters describing photosynthetic capacity, Amax, Jmax and Vcmax . These parameters were similar among [CO2] treatments; thus, there was no downward acclimation of photosynthesis in elevated [CO2]. Moreover, Amax, Jmax and Vcmax scaled linearly with leaf N content per unit leaf area. This indicates that the whole-plant source-sink balance of peach seedlings was not disrupted by growth in elevated [CO2], because root volume and nutrient supply were non-restricting. These values may be used in scaling up models to improve their ability to predict the magnitude of tree responses to climate change in the Mediterranean area.  相似文献

We examined how independent and interactive effects of CO2 concentrations, water supply and wind speed affect growth rates, biomass partitioning, water use efficiency, diffusive conductance and stomatal density of plants. To test the prediction that wind stress will be ameliorated by increased CO2 and/or by unrestricted water supply we grew Sinapis alba L. plants in controlled chambers under combinations of two levels of CO2 (350 ppmv, 700 ppmv), two water regimes and two wind speeds (0.3 ms–1, 3.7 ms–1). We harvested at ten different dates over a period of 60 days. A growth analysis was carried out to evaluate treatment effects on plant responses. Plants grown both in increased CO2 and in low wind conditions had significantly greater stem length, leaf area and dry weights of plant parts. Water supply significantly affected stem diameter, root weight and leaf area. CO2 enrichment significantly increased the rate of biomass accumulation and the relative ratio of biomass increase to leaf area expansion. High wind speed significantly reduced plant growth rates and the rate of leaf area expansion was reduced more than the rate of biomass accumulation. Regression analysis showed significant CO2 effects on the proportion of leaf and stem dry weight to total dry weight. A marked plant-age effect was dependent on water supply, wind speed and CO2 concentration. A reduced water supply significantly decreased the stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency significantly increased with a limited water supply, low wind and increased CO2. We found significant CO2 x wind effects for water diffusion resistance, adaxial number of stomata and water use efficiencies and significant wind x water effect for water use efficiency. In conclusion, wind stress was ameliorated by growing in unrestricted water but not by growing in increased CO2.  相似文献

We grew velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. var. Stoneville 213) at three irradiances and determined the photosynthetic responses of single leaves to a range of six irradiances from 90 to 2000 μeinsteins m−2sec−1. In air containing 21% O2, velvetleaf and cotton grown at 750 μeinsteins m−2sec−1 had maximum photosynthetic rates of 18.4 and 21.9 mg of CO2 dm−2hr−1, respectively. Maximum rates for leaves grown at 320 and 90 μeinsteins m−2sec−1 were 15.3 and 10.3 mg of CO2 dm−2hr−1 in velvetleaf and 12 and 6.7 mg of CO2 dm−2hr−1 in cotton, respectively. In 1 O2, maximum photosynthetic rates were 1.5 to 2.3 times the rates in air containing 21% O2, and plants grown at medium and high irradiance did not differ in rate. In both species, stomatal conductance was not significantly affected by growth irradiance. The differences in maximum photosynthetic rates were associated with differences in mesophyll conductance. Mesophyll conductance increased with growth irradiance and correlated positively with mesophyll thickness or volume per unit leaf area, chlorophyll content per unit area, and photosynthetic unit density per unit area. Thus, quantitative changes in the photosynthetic apparatus help account for photosynthetic adaptation to irradiance in both species. Net assimilation rates calculated for whole plants by mathematical growth analysis were closely correlated with single-leaf photosynthetic rates.  相似文献

Pinus radiata D. Don (half-sib families 20010 and 20062) and Pinus caribaea var hondurensis (an open-pollinated family) were grown for 49 weeks at seven levels of phosphorus and at CO2 concentrations of either 340 or 660 microliters per liter, to establish if the phosphorus requirements differed between the CO2 concentrations and if mycorrhizal associations were affected. When soil phosphorus availability was low, phosphorus uptake was increased by elevated CO2. This may have been related to changes in mycorrhizal competition. When the phosphorus concentration in the youngest fully expanded needles was above 600 milligrams per kilogram the shoot weight of all pine families was greater at high CO2 due to increases in rates of photosynthesis. More dry weight was partitioned to the stems of P. radiata family 20010 and P. caribaea. At foliar phosphorus concentrations above 1000 milligrams per kilogram (P. radiata) and 700 milligrams per kilogram (P. caribaea), growth did not increase at 340 microliters of CO2 per liter. Soluble sugar levels in the same needles mirrored the growth response, but the starch concentration declined with increasing phosphorus. At 660 microliters of CO2 per liter, shoot weight and soluble sugar concentrations were still increasing up to a foliar P concentration of 1800 milligrams per kilogram for P. radiata and 1600 milligrams per kilogram for P. caribaea. The starch concentrations did not decline. These results indicate that higher foliar phosphorus concentrations are required to realize the maximum growth potential of pines at elevated CO2.  相似文献

The response of Eucalyptus grandis seedlings to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations was examined by growing seedlings at either 340 or 660 n mol CO2 mol-1 for 6 weeks. Graded increments of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers were added to a soil deficient in these nutrients to establish if the growth response to increasing nutrient availability was affected by CO2 concentration. At 660 μmol CO2 mol-1, seedling dry weight was up to five times greater than at 340 μmol CO2 mol-1. The absolute response was largest when both nitrogen and phosphorus availability was high but the relative increase in dry weight was greatest at low phosphorus availability. At 340 μmol CO2 mol-1 and high nitrogen availability, growth was stimulated by addition of phosphorus up to 76 mg kg 1 soil. Further additions of phosphorus had little effect. However, at 660 μmol CO2 mol-1, growth only began to plateau at a phosphorus addition rate of 920mg kg-1 soil. At 340 μmol CO2 mol-1 and high phosphorus availability, increasing nitrogen from 40 to 160mg kg-1 soil had little effect on plant growth. At high CO2, growth reached a maximum at between 80 and 160mg nitrogen kg-1 soil. Total uptake of phosphorus was greater at high CO2 concentration at all fertilizer addition rates, but nitrogen uptake was either lower or unchanged at high CO2 concentration except at the highest nitrogen fertilizer rate. The shoot to root ratio was increased by CO2 enrichment, primarily because the specific leaf weight was greater. The nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in the foliage was lower at elevated CO2 concentration partly because of the higher specific leaf weight. These results indicate that critical foliar concentrations currently used to define nutritional status and fertilizer management may need to be reassessed as the atmospheric CO2 concentration rises.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen stress on needle δ13C, water-use efficiency (WUE) and biomass production in irrigated and dry land white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) seedlings was investigated. Sixteen hundred seedlings, representing 10 controlled crosses, were planted in the field in individual buried sand-filled cylinders. Two nitrogen treatments were imposed, nitrogen stressed and fertilized. The ranking of δ13C of the crosses was maintained across all combinations of water and nitrogen treatments and there was not a significant genetic versus environmental interaction. The positive relationships between needle δ13C, WUE and dry matter production demonstrate that it should be possible to use δ13C as a surrogate for WUE, and to select for increased WUE without compromising yield, even in nitrogen deficient environments. Nitrogen stressed seedlings had the lowest needle δ13C in both irrigated and dry land conditions. There was a positive correlation between needle nitrogen content and δ13C that was likely associated with increased photosynthetic capacity. There was some indication that decreased nitrogen supply led to increased stomatal conductance and hence lower WUE. There was a negative correlation between intrinsic water use efficiency and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). This suggests that white spruce seedlings have the ability to maximize NUE when water becomes limited. There was significant genetic variation in NUE that was maintained across treatments. Our results suggest that in white spruce, there is no detectable effect of anaplerotic carbon fixation and that it is more appropriate to use a value of 29‰ (‘Rubisco only’) for the net discrimination against 13C during CO2 fixation. This leads to excellent correspondence between values of Ci/Ca derived from gas exchange measurements or from δ13C.  相似文献

Summary The effects of CO2 enrichment and water stress on gas exchange of Liquidambar styraciflua L. (sweetgum) and Pinus taeda L. (loblolly pine) seedlings were examined for individuals grown from seed under high (1000 mol·m-2·s-1) and low (250 mol·m-2·s-1) photosynthetic photon flux density at 350, 675 and 1000 l·l-1 CO2. At 8 weeks of age, half the seedlings in each CO2-irradiance treatment were subjected to a drying cycle which reduced plant water potential to about -2.5 MPa in the most stressed plants, while control plants remained well-watered (water potentials of -0.3 and -0.7 MPa for sweetgum and loblolly pine, respectively). During this stress cycle, whole seedling net photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance of plants from each CO2-irradiance-water treatment were measured under respective growth conditions. For both species, water stress effects on gas exchange were greatest under high irradiance conditions. Waterstressed plants had significantly lower photosynthesis rates than well-watered controls throughout most of the drying cycle, with the most severe inhibition occurring for low CO2, high irradiance-grown sweetgum seedlings. Carbon dioxide enrichment had little effect on gas exchange rates of either water-stressed or well-watered loblolly pine seedlings. In contrast, water stress effects were delayed for sweetgum seedlings grown at elevated CO2, particularly in the 1000 l·l-1 CO2, high irradiance treatment where net photosynthesis, transpiration and conductance of stressed plants were 60, 36 and 33% of respective control values at the end of the drying cycle. Development of internal plant water deficits was slower for stressed sweetgum seedlings grown at elevated CO2. As a result, these seedlings maintained higher photosynthetic rates over the drying cycle than stressed sweetgum seedlings grown at 350 l·l-1 CO2 and stressed loblolly pine seedlings grown at ambient and enriched CO2 levels. In addition, water-stressed sweetgum seedlings grown at elevated CO2 exhibited a substantial increase in water use efficiency. The results suggest that with the future increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, sweetgum seedlings should tolerate longer exposure to low soil moisture, resulting in greater first year survival of seedlings on drier sites of abandoned fields in the North Carolina piedmont.  相似文献

Nutrients such as phosphorus may exert a major control over plant response to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration (CO2), which is projected to double by the end of the 21st century. Elevated CO2 may overcome the diffusional limitations to photosynthesis posed by stomata and mesophyll and alter the photo-biochemical limitations resulting from phosphorus deficiency. To evaluate these ideas, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) was grown in controlled environment growth chambers with three levels of phosphate (Pi) supply (0.2, 0.05 and 0.01 mM) and two levels of CO2 concentration (ambient 400 and elevated 800 μmol mol−1) under optimum temperature and irrigation. Phosphate deficiency drastically inhibited photosynthetic characteristics and decreased cotton growth for both CO2 treatments. Under Pi stress, an apparent limitation to the photosynthetic potential was evident by CO2 diffusion through stomata and mesophyll, impairment of photosystem functioning and inhibition of biochemical process including the carboxylation efficiency of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxyganase and the rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration. The diffusional limitation posed by mesophyll was up to 58% greater than the limitation due to stomatal conductance (gs) under Pi stress. As expected, elevated CO2 reduced these diffusional limitations to photosynthesis across Pi levels; however, it failed to reduce the photo-biochemical limitations to photosynthesis in phosphorus deficient plants. Acclimation/down regulation of photosynthetic capacity was evident under elevated CO2 across Pi treatments. Despite a decrease in phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll concentrations in leaf tissue and reduced stomatal conductance at elevated CO2, the rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area when measured at the growth CO2 concentration tended to be higher for all except the lowest Pi treatment. Nevertheless, plant biomass increased at elevated CO2 across Pi nutrition with taller plants, increased leaf number and larger leaf area.  相似文献

Responses of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were monitored throughout a 3-year field exposure of Liriodendron tulipifera (yellow-poplar) and Quercus alba (white oak) to elevated concentrations of atmospheric CO2. Exposure to atmospheres enriched with +150 and +300 umol mol-1 CO2 increased net photosynthesis by 12–144% over the course of the study. Net photosynthesis was consistently higher at +300 than at +150 umol mol-1 CO2. The effect of CO2 enrichment on stomatal conductance was limited, but instantaneous leaf-level water use efficiency increased significantly. No decrease in the responsiveness of photosynthesis to CO2 enrichment over time was detected, and the responses were consistent throughout the canopy and across successive growth flushes and seasons. The relationships between internal CO2 concentration and photosynthesis (e.g. photosynthetic capacity and carboxylation efficiency) were not altered by growth at elevated concentrations of CO2. No alteration in the timing of leaf senescence or abscission was detected, suggesting that the seasonal duration of effective gas-exchange was unaffected by CO2 treatment. These results are consistent with data previously reported for these species in controlled-environment studies, and suggest that leaf-level photosynthesis does not down-regulate in these species as a result of acclimation to CO2 enrichment in the field. This sustained enhancement of photosynthesis provides the opportunity for increased growth and carbon storage by trees as the atmospheric concentration of CO2 rises, but many additional factors interact in determining whole-plant and forest responses to global change.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of gradually-developing water-stress has been studied in Lupinus albus L., Helianthus annuus L., Vitis vinifera cv. Rosaki and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. Water was withheld and diurnal rhythms were investigated 4–8d later, when the predawn water deficit was more negative than in watered plants, and the stomata closed almost completely early during the photoperiod. The contribution of ‘stomatal’ and ‘non-stomatal’ components to the decrease of photosynthetic rate was investigated by (1) comparing the changes of the rate of photosynthesis in air with the changes of stomatal conductance and (2) measuring photosynthetic capacity in saturating irradiance and 15% CO2. Three species (lupin, eucalyptus and sunflower) showed larger changes of stomatal conductance than photosynthesis in air, and showed little or no decrease of photosynthetic capacity in saturating CO2. Photosynthesis in air also recovered fully overnight after watering the plants in the evening. In grapevines, stomatal conductance and photosynthesis in air changed in parallel, there was a marked decrease of photosynthetic capacity, and photosynthesis and stomatal conductance did not recover overnight after watering water-stressed plants. Relative water content remained above 90% in grapevine. We conclude that non-stomatal components do not play a significant role in lupins, sunflower or eucalyptus, but could in grapevine. The effect of water-stress on partitioning of photosynthate was investigated by measuring the amounts of sucrose and starch in leaves during a diurnal rhythm, and by measuring the partitioning of 14C-carbon dioxide between sucrose and starch. In all four species, starch was depleted in water-stressed leaves but sucrose was maintained at amounts similar to, or higher than, those in watered plants. Partitioning into sucrose was increased in lupins and eucalyptus, and remained unchanged in grapevine and sunflower. It is concluded that water-stressed leaves in all four species maintain high levels of soluble sugars in their leaves, despite having lower rates of field photosynthesis, decreased rates of export, and low amounts of starch in their leaves.  相似文献

Two cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Alexandria and Hanno) and three cultivars of winter wheat (cvs. Riband, Mercia and Haven) were grown at two concentrations of CO2 [ambient (355 pmol mol?1) and elevated (708 μmol mol?1)] under two O3 regimes [clean air (< 5 nmol mol?1 O3) and polluted air (15 nmol mol?1 O3 at night rising to a midday maximum of 75 nmol mol?1)] in a phytotron at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Between the two-leaf stage and anthesis, measurements of leaf gas-exchange, non-structural carbohydrate content, visible O3 damage, growth, dry matter partitioning, yield components and root development were made in order to examine responses to elevated CO2 and/or O3. Growth at elevated CO2 resulted in a sustained increase in the rate of CO2 assimilation, but after roughly 6 weeks' exposure there was evidence of a slight decline in the photosynthetic rate (c.-15%) measured under growth conditions which was most pronounced in the winter cultivars. Enhanced rates of CO2 assimilation were accompanied by a decrease in stomatal conductance which improved the instantaneous water use efficiency of individual leaves. CO2 enrichment stimulated shoot and root growth to an equivalent extent, and increased tillering and yield components, however, non-structural carbohydrates still accumulated in source leaves. In contrast, long-term exposure to O3 resulted in a decreased CO2 assimilation rate (c. -13%), partial stomatal closure, and the accumulation of fructan and starch in leaves in the light. These effects were manifested in decreased rates of shoot and root growth, with root growth more severely affected than shoot growth. In the combined treatment growth of O3-treated plants was enhanced by elevated CO2, but there was little evidence that CO2 enrichment afforded additional protection against O3 damage. The reduction in growth induced by O3 at elevated CO2 was similar to that induced by O3 at ambient CO2 despite additive effects of the individual gases on stomatal conductance that would be expected to reduce the O3 flux by 20%, and also CO2-induced increases in the provision of substrates for detoxification and repair processes. These observations suggest that CO2 enrichment may render plants more susceptible to O3 damage at the cellular level. Possible mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

Needles from phosphorus deficient seedlings of Pinus radiata D. Don grown for 8 weeks at either 330 or 660 microliters CO2 per liter displayed chlorophyll a fluorescence induction kinetics characteristic of structural changes within the thylakoid chloroplast membrane, i.e. constant yield fluorescence (FO) was increased and induced fluorescence ([FP-FI]/FO) was reduced. The effect was greatest in the undroughted plants grown at 660 μl CO2 L−1. By week 22 at 330 μl CO2 L−1 acclimation to P deficiency had occurred as shown by the similarity in the fluorescence characteristics and maximum rates of photosynthesis of the needles from the two P treatments. However, acclimation did not occur in the plants grown at 660 μl CO2 L−1. The light saturated rate of photosynthesis of needles with adequate P was higher at 660 μl CO2 L−1 than at 330 μl CO2 L−1, whereas photosynthesis of P deficient plants showed no increase when grown at the higher CO2 concentration. The average growth increase due to CO2 enrichment was 14% in P deficient plants and 32% when P was adequate. In drought stressed plants grown at 330 μl CO2 L−1, there was a reduction in the maximal rate of quenching of fluorescence (RQ) after the major peak. Constant yield fluorescence was unaffected but induced fluorescence was lower. These results indicate that electron flow subsequent to photosystem II was affected by drought stress. At 660 μl CO2 L−1 this response was eliminated showing that CO2 enrichment improved the ability of the seedlings to acclimate to drought stress. The average growth increase with CO2 enrichment was 37% in drought stressed plants and 19% in unstressed plants.  相似文献

We analysed the impact of elevated CO2 on water relations, water use efficiency and photosynthetic gas exchange in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) under wet and drying soil conditions. Soil moisture was less depleted under elevated compared to ambient [CO2]. Elevated CO2 had no significant effect on the water relations of irrigated plants, except on whole plant hydraulic conductance, which was markedly decreased at elevated compared to ambient CO2 concentrations. The values of relative water content, water potential and osmotic potential were higher under elevated CO2 during the entire drought period. The better water status of water-limited plants grown at elevated CO2 was the result of stomatal control rather than of osmotic adjustment. Despite the low stomatal conductance produced by elevated CO2, net photosynthesis was higher under elevated than ambient CO2 concentrations. With water shortage, photosynthesis was maintained for longer at higher rates under elevated CO2. The reduction of stomatal conductance and therefore transpiration, and the enhancement of carbon assimilation by elevated CO2, increased instantaneous and whole plant water use efficiency in both irrigated and droughted plants. Thus, the metabolism of barley plants grown under elevated CO2 and moderate or mild water deficit conditions is benefited by increased photosynthesis and lower transpiration. The reduction in plant water use results in a marked increase in soil water content which delays the onset and severity of water deficit.  相似文献
