Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection was determined in sera of 632 dogs (551 pets, 81 strays) from Shandong, Henan, and Heilongjiang Provinces, and in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China (PRC), using the indirect hemagglutination assay (cutoff titer 1:64 or higher); 11.1% were seropositive. The seroprevalence in stray dogs and in ≥3-yr-old dogs was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that in household dogs and in <3-yr-old dogs. There were no significant differences in terms of gender, breed, or locality (P ≥ 0.05). The results indicate that T. gondii infections are common in dogs in PRC.  相似文献

A serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii infection among slaughtered pigs in the largest slaughterhouse located in Taoyuan County of northwestern Taiwan was conducted using the latex agglutination (LA) test during 1998. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was 28.8% (32/111) with LA titers of 1:32 (6, 18.8%), 1:64 (10, 31.2%), 1:128 (9, 28.1%), 1:256 (6, 18.8%), and 1:512 (1, 3.1%). No significant difference (P > 0.05) in seroprevalence between male (28.6%, 20/70) and female (29.7%, 12/41) slaughtered pigs was observed. A decreasing trend in the seroprevalence among slaughtered pigs examined in the same slaughterhouse was observed because of a lower seroprevalence (P < 0.05) than that (44.4%, 128/288) previously reported about 10 yr ago using the LA test. Nevertheless, it is important to avoid eating raw or undercooked pork in order to prevent the acquisition of T. gondii infection among people in Taiwan.  相似文献

There is a lack of epidemiological data on Toxoplasma gondii infection in dogs from eastern China. In the present study, serum samples from 288 dogs were collected from Xuzhou, Huaiyin, and Yianchen in Jiangsu Province, eastern China, in August 2010; T. gondii antibodies were assayed by a modified agglutination test (MAT). Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 62 of 288 (21.5%) with MAT titers of 1∶25 in 21 dogs, 1∶50 in 15, 1∶100 in 11, 1∶200 in 6, and 1∶400 and above in 3 dogs. The seroprevalence in ≥3-yr-old dogs was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that in dogs less than 3-yr-old. The results of the present study indicated that infection with T. gondii in household dogs in Jiangsu Province is a public health concern.  相似文献

A seroepidemiological survey of Toxoplasma gondii infection among Atayal and Paiwan mountain aborigines and Southeast Asian laborers in Taiwan was assessed from February 1998 to July 2000 using a latex agglutination test. To determine risk factors for T. gondii infection among Taiwan aborigines, the consumption of raw meat and valley water were given particular attention in a self-administered questionnaire. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was 19.4% for Atayal, 26.7% for Paiwan, 42.9% for Indonesian, 14.7% for Thai, and 11.3% for Filipinos. No significant gender difference in seroprevalence was found among Atayals, Paiwans, Indonesians, and Filipinos (P > 0.05). In the Thai group, however, males had a higher seroprevalence than females (P < 0.001). Results of the multiple logistic regression analysis indicate a higher odds ratios (OR) with age in both aboriginal groups. In contrast, the OR was lower among older Indonesians and Thais. Those Atayals and Paiwans with a history of eating raw meat seemed more susceptible to T. gondii infection than those who had never consumed raw meat. Ethnically, a significant difference in seroprevalence was observed between Indonesians and Paiwans, Atayals, Thais, and Filipinos (P < 0.001).  相似文献

The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in Tibetan sheep was surveyed in Qinghai Province, northwestern China, in May and June 2010. In total, 580 serum samples was collected from 6 counties, and antibodies to T. gondii were detected by indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 29.8% (173/580); regional differences showed the highest prevalences in Nangqian County (39.4%) and Zaduo County (48.7%). The results of the present study indicate that infection with T. gondii in sheep is widely spread in China, including Tibetan sheep in Qinghai Province, and is a potential public health concern.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is widely distributed in humans and other animals, including wild rats throughout the world, but little is known of the prevalence of T. gondii in rats in China. The seroprevalence of T. gondii in rats ( Rattus norvegicus and Rattus flavipectus ) was investigated in Guangzhou, southern China, between November 2009 and January 2010. In total, 217 rat serum samples were collected; antibodies to T. gondii were detected by the modified agglutination test (MAT), and 7 (3.2%) were found positive (titers ≥ 1:40). The seroprevalence was higher (3.4%) in R. norvegicus than in R. flavipectus (3.0%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). All 7 positive rats were female; no T. gondii antibodies were detected in males. This is the first extensive survey of T. gondii infection in rats in southern China, and the results have public health implications in this region.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in dogs in Shanghai, China. A total of 1,736 sera (1,178 from the city center and 558 from the outskirts) was collected from healthy dogs and tested for T. gondii infection by indirect hemagglutination; 56 sera (3.2%) were considered positive, with titers > 1∶64. The seroprevalence in dogs from the outskirts of the city (town dogs, 6.0%; countryside dogs, 9.8%) was significantly higher (P > 0.05) than that in city center dogs (1.3%). The age of the dog has an apparent association with T. gondii infection; that is, the seroprevalence ranged from 1.9% (in dogs ≤ 1 year old) to 3.6% (in dogs > 5 years old). There was no significant difference in gender (P ≥ 0.05), that is, 1.4% versus 1.1% for male and female dogs in the city center, 6.2% versus 5.9% in town dogs, and 8.4% versus 11.5% in country dogs, respectively. These results suggest that T. gondii infections are common in dogs from the city center and outskirts of Shanghai, but the T. gondii seroprevalence in dogs is considerably lower than in other regions in PR China. The presence of T. gondii DNA was investigated by nested PCR on 110 blood samples from city center dogs, but no positive samples were found, which may suggest that there were no acute infections of T. gondii in the city center samples. Our results indicate that the control and treatment of toxoplasmosis in Shanghai has been effective. However, it is still essential to further implement integrated strategies to prevent and control T. gondii infection in dogs in both the city center and the outskirts.  相似文献

Toxoplasmosis is an important parasitic disease worldwide and is related to certain psychiatric disorders and sterility. In the present study, serum samples from 882 female sterility patients and 107 pregnant-puerperant women were assayed for anti- T. gondii IgG antibodies using ELISA. The overall T. gondii seroprevalence was 14.8%. In the female sterility patients, 15.9% (140/882) were seropositive and, in the pregnant-puerperant women, 5.6% (6/107) were positive for anti- T. gondii IgG antibodies. There was a significant difference between the 2 groups ( P < 0.05). The samples were further divided into 5 groups based on age, but no significant difference was found among the 5 groups (P > 0.05). Results of the present study argue for more attention to prevention of T. gondii infection in the female population and, in particular, women of childbearing age.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in horses used for sporting purposes in the Province of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In total, 266 serum samples from clinically healthy horses were analyzed for anti- T. gondii antibodies using the Sabin-Feldman dye test. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 84 (31.6%) horses, with specific titers of 1∶16 (78 with a prevalence of 29.3%), 1∶64 (4 with a prevalence of 1.5%), and 1∶256 (2 with a prevalence of 0.8%). The number of seropositive horses in Shaqra (43.7%) was considerably higher than in other regions, with the lowest occurring in Al-Majmaah (11.0%). However, the differences in seroprevalence between the 6 locations were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). In contrast, the overall seroprevalence in Riyadh province was higher than that reported in other countries. Horses are not a direct source of infection for human toxoplasmosis in this region. Usually human infection is facilitated via cats, which are the reservoir hosts for this parasite.  相似文献

A seroepidemiological survey of Toxoplasma gondii infection among Chinese refugees, including Akka and Yau aborigines and Han people living in mountainous areas at elevations of 1,100-1,400 m in Chiang-Rai Province of northern Thailand, was conducted during January 2003 using the latex agglutination test. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was 9.1% for Akka aborigines, 37.9% for Yau aborigines, and 7.9% for Han people, respectively. No significant gender difference in seroprevalence was found among any of the groups (P > 0.05). The results of a multiple logistic regression analysis for Yau aborigines and Han people showed that the older the age, the higher the odds ratios (OR) of being seropositive (OR = 3.0, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.5 to 16.9, P < 0.001 and OR = 1.5, 95% CI = 0.3 to 8.0, P = 0.06 for the elderly group vs. the child group for the Yau aborigines and Han people, respectively). In contrast, the OR was lower among older Akka aboriginal populations (OR = 0.1, 95% CI = 0.0 to 0.4, P < 0.001). Ethnically, Yau aboriginal populations had a significantly higher seroprevalence than did the Akka aborigines and Han people (P < 0.001).  相似文献

The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep (Ovis aries) in northern Mexico is largely unknown. Antibodies to T. gondii were determined in serum samples from 511 sheep from 8 farms in Durango State, Mexico, using the modified agglutination test (MAT). Sheep were raised in 3 geographical regions, i.e., mountainous (n = 68), semi-desert (n = 132), and valley (n = 311). Overall, T. gondii antibodies were found in 77 (15.1%) of 511 sheep, with MAT titers of 1∶25 in 27, 1∶50 in 10, 1∶100 in 11, 1∶200 in 11, 1∶400 in 8, 1∶800 in 3, 1∶1,600 in 4, and 1∶3,200 in 3. The seroprevalence of T. gondii infection increased significantly with age, indicating post-natal transmission. In contrast, gender, breed, flock size, and geographic region did not significantly influence the seroprevalence. Seropositive sheep were found in 7 of 8 farms sampled. This is the first report of T. gondii infection in sheep in Durango State, Mexico. Results indicate that infected sheep are probably an important source of T. gondii infection for humans in Durango State.  相似文献

A seroepidemiological survey of Neospora caninum infection in dairy cattle was carried out in China's southern Guangdong Province between July 2009 and March 2010. A total of 370 serum samples of dairy cattle was collected from 5 farms and examined for antibodies to N. caninum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The overall seroprevalence of N. caninum in dairy cattle was 18.9% (70/370). The seroprevalence of N. caninum in aborting cows (22.7%) was higher than that in nonaborting cows (16.3%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Five-yr-old dairy cattle had the highest seroprevalence (27.8%), followed by those that were 6-yr-old (20.4%). Dairy cattle with 4 pregnancies had the highest seroprevalence (29.2%). There was no apparent association of N. caninum seropositivity with age or number of pregnancies (P > 0.05). The results of the present survey indicated that the infection with N. caninum is prevalent in dairy cattle of all ages in southern China, which may be one of the causes of bovine abortion. This is the first report of seroprevalence of N. caninum in dairy cattle in southern China.  相似文献

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Consumption of raw or undercooked meat is the main risk factor for acquiring T. gondii infection in humans. Meat and meat products derived from goats and sheep are mainly consumed in Mongolia; however, there is limited epidemiological information on T. gondii infection in small ruminants in this country. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii in sheep and goats in Mongolia. The seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG antibodies was determined by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on the recombinant antigens of dense granule protein 7 of T. gondii. A total of 1078 goat and 882 sheep blood samples were collected from 17 of 21 provinces and the capital city of Mongolia. Overall, the seroprevalence of T. gondii among the goat and sheep samples was 32% and 34.8%, respectively. The seroprevalence among goat samples was significantly higher in western (42.7%) and eastern (45.6%) regions compared with other regions (24%). Additionally, the seroprevalence among sheep was significantly higher in eastern regions (55.4%) compared with other regions (26%–33%). Age, but not sex, was considered a risk factor for T. gondii seropositivity in goats, whereas no statistically significant differences were observed in sheep for age or sex. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the high seroprevalence of T. gondii in small ruminants in Mongolia. Our results highlight that country-wide control measures are required to minimize infections in livestock.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody seroprevalence was studied in two different populations of 219 HIV-infected patients and 144 apparently healthy individuals (AHIs). Clinical toxoplasmosis was assessed among the HIV-infected patients. Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 85 (38.8%, 95% CI: 32.36%-45.26%) of the HIV-infected patients and in 30 (20.8%, 95% CI: 14.20%-27.46%) of the AHIs. Among the AIHs, males represented 22.0% of infections compared to females (20.0%) and individuals within age group 21-30 years accounted for the highest prevalence of 33.3% (95% CI: 11.56%-55.10%). There was no significant difference in the trend (Chi-square, P < or = 0.05). Assessment of epidemiological factors showed higher seroprevalence of Toxoplasma antibodies among those who eat rodents (29.6%) and those who constantly have contact with the soil (21.2%). Among the HIV-infected, individuals 31-40-years-old had the highest T. gondii seroprevalence (36.5%). Evaluation of the clinical findings of patients with concomitant toxoplasmosis and HIV infection greatly implicated fever (63.5%), headache (44.7%), rashes (41.2%) and anorexia (34.1%). This study contributes to the development of guidelines for the prevention and management of toxoplasmosis in HIV-infected patients and in apparently healthy individuals in a resource scarce setting.  相似文献

To investigate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in free-ranging Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Sweden, serosanguinous fluids and feces were collected from 207 carcasses of lynx killed or found dead from 1996 to 1998. Sera were tested for antibodies against T. gondii by the direct agglutination test, and 156 (75.4%) of the sera tested positive at antibody titers>or=40. Antibody prevalence was significantly lower in lynx originating from the northern parts of Sweden than in lynx from the more southern regions that are more densely populated by humans. Age-related differences also were found, with a significantly lower prevalence (55%) in juvenile (<1-yr-old) than in subadult and adult animals (82%). There was no significant difference in seroprevalence between males and females. Oocysts typical of T. gondii were not detected in any of the fecal samples.  相似文献

Toxoplasmosis is an important food-borne parasitic disease. In the present study, the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in slaughtered pigs and cattle was surveyed in Liaoning Province, northeastern China in May and June 2011. In total, 1,164 porcine serum samples and 646 bovine serum samples were collected from 5 counties and examined for T. gondii antibodies by an indirect hemagglutination test. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 12.0% (140/1,164) of pigs, with some regional differences. The highest prevalence of 14.4% (47/326) was found in Fuxin followed by 12.5% (62/497) in Jinzhou; overall, 6.0% (39/646) was observed in cattle but with no regional difference (P > 0.05). Prevalence of T. gondii infection in pigs was also significantly higher compared to cattle (P < 0.05). The results of the present study indicate that infection with T. gondii in pigs and cattle is widely spread in China including Liaoning Province, northeastern China, and is, therefore, of public health concern.  相似文献

Prevalence of Bartonella henselae antibody in Florida panthers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Serum samples from 28 free-ranging Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi) and seven mountain lions from Texas (P. concolor stanleyana) living in south Florida (USA) between 1997 to 1998 were tested for antibodies to Bartonella henselae. Twenty percent (7/35) of the samples were reactive to B. henselae antisera with a subspecies prevalence of 18% (5/ 28) for Florida panthers and 28% (2/7) for cougars from Texas (USA). There was not a significant sex related difference in infection rates among the Florida panthers. Antibody prevalence was higher in panthers <2-yr of age (40%) compared to panthers >2-yr (13%). Compared to studies of antibody prevalence in mountain lions (P. concolor) from California (USA), overall seroprevalence was lower as was prevalence in panthers >2-yr-old. However, the seroprevalence in animals <2-yr from southern Florida was similar to prevalences reported in mountain lions or domestic felids in California.  相似文献

Of 1,564 serum samples from adult ewes from 33 farms in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Nebraska where toxoplasmosis-induced ovine abortions had been diagnosed, 65.5% were found positive for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using the modified agglutination test. Toxoplasma gondii antibody titers of ewes were: less than 64 (34.5%), 64 (14.9%), 256 (22.0%), 1,024 (14.5%), and greater than 4,096 (13.8%). Thus, 28.3% of sheep had high titers (greater than 1,024) indicating recently acquired T. gondii infection. On certain farms, up to 95% of ewes were seropositive. Prevalence of T. gondii antibodies increased with age of the ewe. Of 665 ewes, 53.6% of 1-yr-old ewes were seropositive (titers greater than 64) versus 75% of 5-yr-old ewes. Results indicate that T. gondii infection in sheep in the United States is widespread.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to obtain seroepidemiological information on the Neospora caninum infection status of sheep and goats in different areas of Punjab Province and Azad Kashmir (Pakistan). A cross-sectional study, with the use of a competitive ELISA, showed an overall 27.7% (35 of 128) (95% confidence interval [CI] ± 7.7%) and 8.6% (13 of 142) (95% CI ± 4.6%) seroprevalence of N. caninum antibodies in sheep and goats, respectively. The difference in seroprevalence between sheep and goat populations was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The highest prevalence (37.4% ± 13.2%) was recorded in the tailless breed of sheep.  相似文献

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in pigs in 10 regions of Zhejiang Province, China, was obtained by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti- T. gondii antibodies were found in 53.4% (434/813) of pigs. Results were analyzed by a chi-square (χ(2)) test. Differences were observed according to farm size, animal age, and sampling regions. Seroprevalences in pigs raised on small farms (71.4%) were significantly higher than that (42.7%) on large farms (P < 0.05), and seroprevalence increased progressively with age. The seroprevalence ranged from 28.1% to 66.0% in different regions, with Jiaxing having the lowest level (28.1%), followed by Hangzhou (36.0%) and Taizhou (42.0%). This is the first study on seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in pigs in Zhejiang Province.  相似文献
