The extent and seasonal pattern of asexual reproduction and ability to germinate in the rare liverwort Lophozia ascendens and the common liverworts L. ventricosa and L. longiflora were studied in the Boubínský prales National Nature Reserve in Šumava Mts. (Bohemian Forest), South Bohemia, Czech Republic. Asexual reproduction was quantified as the number of gemmae produced per individual shoot. Numbers of gemmae per shoot among sampling months differed significantly; increase of gemma production was delayed in L. ascendens in comparison with gemma production of L. ventricosa and L. longiflora. We suggest that gemma production is influenced by environmental factors, mainly air humidity. Germinability of gemmae was low in early spring, highest in August and September and slightly depressed in October. This pattern suggests that rather mild winters in the Czech Republic cause the lower mortality of shoots during winter and the environmental pressure towards the production of dormant gemmae is not a prominent factor affecting the population dynamics of the species under study.  相似文献

The seasonal pattern and degree of asexual reproduction of a boreal hepatic species, Lophozia silvicola Buch, were studied in a lowland population of the species in central Norway. Asexual reproduction was quantified as numbers of 1–2 -celled gemmae produced per individual shoot, with average production ranging from 1000 to 7000 gemmae per shoot. Despite a slightly increasing trend in early spring, average numbers of gemmae present on shoots were fairly constant during the growing season. Germinability of gemmae was high in early spring, but declined rapidly towards the end of the season, suggesting an increasing proportion of gemmae in the dormant stage in the diaspore bank. Despite repeated sampling, average shoot density remained fairly constant in L. silvicola colonies during the growth season. Gemma production did not correlate with shoot density. Local colonization efficiency was estimated as frequency of occupied substrate patches and proportion of substrate area occupied by L. silvicola in a 10×20 m plot. Colonizable substrates included decaying wood, bare soil and rock surfaces. Colonies of L. silvicola were small, and differences in colony sizes between the substrate types were not significant. Colonies were found in 38% of the substrate patches, but total cover was low, less than 0.1% of all colonizable substrate.  相似文献

Many Disa species (80%) have not been germinated in vitro, fuelling conservation fears. Winter-rainfall species are typically germinable, whilst summer-rainfall species are exclusively intractable in vitro. We aimed to establish the in vitro germination requirements for previously ungerminated Disa species. Conventional asymbiotic seed culture protocols were reviewed and their efficacy in summer-rainfall Disa established. Mature seed was subjected to manipulations of media composition and viscosity, incubation temperature and illumination. Immature cultures were also established across four seed maturity classes. Four first-time germinations (D. cooperi, D. nervosa, D. pulchra and D. woodii) resulted from media with increased water availability. Germination rate (>12 weeks), percentage (<30%) and synchrony were not in accordance with values reported for winter-rainfall species (>80% germination in 8 weeks). Germination of immature seed under control conditions was similar to mature seed germination under modified conditions, but neither percentage approached the calculated germination potential (∼viability). Germination control in Disa is proposed as a trade-off between water availability and the presence of phyto-inhibitors in the environment of the embryo—two features typical of seeds exhibiting water-impermeable dormancy.  相似文献

Pollen of the palm Trachycarpus fortunei was kept at 25°C and relative humidities (RH) of 20, 55 and 98%. Changes in viability, water content and carbohydrates were measured over 2–17 days. Water content remained almost constant at 20 and 50% RH and increased dramatically at 98%. Pollen viability and germination rate remained almost constant over 14 days at 20% RH and decreased to about 2% after 7–9 days at 55% and to even less at 98% RH. Although the three experimental conditions were constant, qualitative and quantitative variations in pollen carbohydrates were recorded, even after pollen had lost its viability. The quantities of mono-, di- and polysaccharides varied with the period of pollen storage at the various RH. The greatest changes in glucose, fructose and sucrose content were recorded at 55 and 98% RH. At these relative humidities, maximum glucose and fructose content and minimum sucrose content occurred at maximum water content. Starch was not present in mature pollen but appeared and peaked after 7–9 days of pollen storage at 55 and 98%. Appearance of starch coincided with an increase in pectin content. PAS-positive cytoplasmic polysaccharides showed an increasing trend at 20% RH. A relation was found between pollen viability, water content and monosaccharide content. Pollen viability and germination capacity remained high at 20% RH for 14 days. At this relative humidity, pollen water, glucose and fructose contents remained almost constant, while sucrose reached its maximum value. The fluctuations of more complex carbohydrates (starch, pectins and PAS-positive cytoplasmic polysaccharides) were less easy to interpret. Changes observed under experimental conditions could simulate processes occurring in nature during pollen presentation and dispersal.  相似文献

以玉米品种“粤单9117”为材料,研究了种子发育过程中萌发能力和耐脱水能力的获得。玉米种子的生理成熟期约为43DAP(授粉后天数)。胚萌发能力的获得是在14-21DAP、耐脱水能力的获得出现在25-28DAP。胚的耐脱水能力在28DAP后仍不断得到加强。耐脱水能力的获得与细胞膜的发育及受保护的程度密切相关。脱水有利于不同发育时期的胚和种子的萌发。  相似文献

The variation in seed moisture, mould content and seed germination of two species of melon,Citrullus lanatus L. andCitrullus vulgaris Shrad. stored in jute bags was monitored at intervals of 2 months for one year. Seed moisture decreased in the first 6 months of storage followed by a gradual increase in the rainy months. The field fungi predominated immediately after harvest and disappeared completely after 6 months of storage. The storage fungi increased in both species and abundance throughout the storage period.Citrullus lanatus maintained high germination percentage for the first 4 months,C. vulgaris for the first 2 months, thereafter seed germinability decreased with prolonged storage.  相似文献

The impact of fire on hard-coated Cistaceae (Halimium ocymoides, Cistus ladanifer, and C. salvifolius) soil seed banks in a Mediterranean 'maquis' shrubland, and its effect on seed germinability were studied. The study also contrasts the effectiveness of two widely used techniques for quantifying seed banks, the seedling emergence and the physical separation methods, in relation to fire. The null hypothesis that a massive enhancement of physically-dormant Cistaceae seed germination by fire would make use of the time-consuming physical separation technique unnecessary was tested. Fire reduced Cistaceae seed banks in the 0–2 cm deep soil layer by both seed fire-consumption and lethal temperatures, revealed by the significant decreasing of the seed bank density and by the increase of apparently-intact but soft-unviable seeds, respectively. In contrast, no damage was recorded in the 2–5 cm soil layer. A dramatic seed bank depletion (> 90%) in both soil layers was recorded one year after fire in the burnt area, coinciding with a significant increase of seedling density confined to the first post-fire year. The ecological consequences of this massive post-fire seed bank input are discussed. A germinability test revealed that germination of surviving Cistaceae seeds was significantly enhanced in all cases except for the C. salvifolious seed bank in the deeper soil layer. However, final germination levels (60–75%) did not correspond to the magnitude of seed bank depletion, especially for C. salvifolious, which suggests that other environmental factors not exclusively associated with fire may also be important in softening Cistaceae seeds. Germination enhancement by fire soil-heating was not high enough to reject the physical separation technique, at least in the deeper soil layer. The simultaneous use of both seedling emergence and physical separation is recommended for reliable seed bank estimates when a physically-dormant hard-seeded component can be expected in the soil, as in many Mediterranean ecosystems, regardless of fire occurrence.  相似文献

Deforestation has resulted in the fragmentation of forests. Remnant fragments are widely assumed to be sources of seeds for forest regeneration in abandoned pastures. The seed rain in 12 pastures at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, their relationship with riparian vegetation adjacent to them, and their closeness to the reserve is described. For all the species found in the seed rain, we classified them by typical habitat (pasture or rain forest), life form, dispersal syndrome, and plant strategy (pioneer or non-pioneer species). In addition, germinability was evaluated for all seeds. We also assessed the correlation in composition of the seed rain and the riparian vegetation. Only 11% of the total species that occur in the Los Tuxtlas region reach pastures via dispersal from forest fragments. However, nearly 80% of the species in the seed rain did not come from the fruiting individuals in the adjacent riparian vegetation. The proportion of dispersal syndromes, life forms and plant strategies of the species in the seed rain was similar to those observed in the rain forest. On average, the germinability of forest species was less than 30%.The forest species richness was similar in the seed rain in pastures and inside the forest, but the pasture seed rain contained fewer seeds per species. Pastures have a high potential for natural regeneration because of seed dispersal from adjacent forest. However, the forest that regenerates in pastures close to the reserve is expected to contain different species than the forest regenerating far away from it.  相似文献

The capacity of eight wetland seeds to be internally dispersed by common teal (Anas crecca L.) after a dry period typical of natural Mediterranean wetlands was experimentally quantified. These plant taxa (Chara spp., Echinochloacrus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Eleocharis palustris (L.) Roem. & Schult, Polygonum lapathifolium L., Potamogeton nodosus Poir., Potamogeton pusillus L., Schoenoplectus mucronatus (L.) Palla, Scirpus maritimus L.) were frequently ingested by teal in the field. Captive teal were fed with known quantities of dry seeds and faecal samples were collected at intervals of 1-2 h for 48 h. The proportion of seeds retrieved after gut passage that germinated varied between taxa from 3% to 83%. From 2% to 63% of the seeds ingested were recovered intact, and 18-95% of these were still viable. Therefore, an overall 32% of the seeds ingested were evacuated in a viable condition, ranging from 0.2% for Chara spp. to 54% for S. mucronatus. Mean seed retention time was 3-5 h. Overall, 94% of seeds were evacuated within 12 h, but 2% were recovered after more than 24 h. Seed viability was reduced at longer retention times, although viable seeds of all taxa except Chara spp. were recovered 44-48 h after the experiment began. Germinability was increased by gut passage, although for some species this effect was only significant after stratification, indicating that they exhibit both mechanical and physical dormancy. Seed germination was accelerated by gut passage, especially at longer retention times. Gut passage increased the proportion of viable seeds, suggesting selective digestion of non-viable ones. Endozoochorous transport by teal appears to be a widespread dispersal mechanism among wetland plants.  相似文献

The cold deserts of northern Xinjiang Province in northwest China are rich in diaspore-heteromorphic species, and diaspore biology has been compared in more heteromorphic species native to this biogeoclimatic region than for any other region worldwide. Our primary purpose was to compare the dispersal ability and degree of dormancy in heteromorphic diaspores in Xinjiang desert plants via a review of the Chinese and English literature. We located literature on 20 heteromorphic species native to these deserts. Fourteen of the species are chenopods (Amaranthaceae). All 20 species are heterodiasporous (dimorphic, 14; trimorphic, 4; polymorphic, 2) annuals, and none is amphicarphic sensu stricto. Thirteen of the species are heterocarpic, six heterospermic, one amphi-basicarpic and none heteroarthrocarpic. Diaspores of 19 of the species differ in seed dormancy/germination. Thirteen of the 14 species to which both diaspore dispersal ability and degree of dormancy could be assigned had at least one morph with high (or relatively high) dispersal ability and low degree of dormancy and at least one with low dispersal ability and high (or relatively high) degree of dormancy. Conceptual models of the dynamics of seed dormancy of the two morphs for each of three dimorphic species suggest the ecological significance of heterodiaspory in the cold desert annuals. However, the ecological significance of seed/fruit heteromorphism needs to be more thoroughly demonstrated via long-term field studies that compare the life history/demography of plants derived from different morphs.  相似文献
