Summary Temperature effects on calling song production and recognition were investigated in the North American field cricket, Gryllus firmus. Temporal parameters of field-recorded G. firmus calling song are strongly affected by temperature. Chirp rate and syllable rate increase, by factors of 4 and 2, respectively, as linear functions of temperature over the range in which these animals sing in the field (12°–30 °C). Temperature affects syllable duration to a lesser extent, and does not influence calling song carrier frequency. Female phonotactic preference, measured on a spherical treadmill in the laboratory, also changes with temperature such that warmer females prefer songs with faster chirp and syllable rates. Best phonotaxis, measured as accuracy of orientation to the sound source, and highest walking velocity, occur in response to temperature-matched songs at 15°, 21°, and 30 °C. Experiments under semi-natural conditions in an outdoor arena revealed that females perform phonotaxis at temperatures as low as 13 °C. Taken together, the song and phonotaxis data demonstrate that this communication system is temperature coupled. A strategy is outlined by which temperature coupling may be exploited to test hypotheses about the organization of neural networks subserving song recognition.Abbreviations CP chirp period - SP syllable period - SD syllable duration  相似文献

Summary Both seismic and auditory signals were tested for their propagation characteristics in a field study of the Cape mole-rat (Georychus capensis), a subterranean rodent in the family Bathyergidae. This solitary animal is entirely fossorial and apparently communicates with its conspecifics by alternately drumming its hind legs on the burrow floor. Signal production in this species is sexually dimorphic, and mate attraction is likely mediated primarily by seismic signalling between individuals in neighboring burrows. Measurements within, and at various distances away from, natural burrows suggest that seismic signals propagate at least an order of magnitude better than auditory signals. Moreover, using a mechanical thumper which could be triggered from a tape recording of the mole-rat's seismic signals, we established that the vertically-polarized surface wave (Rayleigh wave) propagates with less attenuation than either of the two horizontally-polarized waves. Grooming initiation among adult males and females of a Japanese macaque troop was analyzed during the non-mating season. Some gestures (“solicitation”) elicited grooming from partners at a high rate. Grooming initiation patterns were divided into two main types: (1) a male often solicited a female to groom him immediately after approaching her and was groomed by her; and (2) a female approached an alpha male selectively, and immediately groomed him. After a female groomed a male, she rarely solicited him to groom her and instead often moved away from him. These results indicated that males were motivated to be groomed, while females were more highly motivated to groom. Sex differences in grooming motivation can be explained by sex differences in the benefit to be groomed.  相似文献

IntroductionPerson-centered care (PCC) includes life story, a form of reminiscence therapy that can be useful in the treatment of dementia. We compared the efficacy of using a digital or conventional life story book (LSB) on depressive symptoms, communication, cognition, and quality of life.Material and methodsThirty one persons with dementia living in 2 PCC nursing homes were randomly assigned to receive reminiscence therapy based on the Neural Actions digital LSB (n = 16) or a conventional LSB (n = 15). Both groups performed 2 weekly sessions of 45 min for 5 weeks. Depressive symptoms were evaluated with the Cornell scale (CSDD); communication with the Holden scale (HCS), cognition with the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and quality of life with the quality of life scale for Alzheimer's (QoL-AD). The results were analyzed using ANOVA of repeated measures with the jamovi 2.3 program.ResultsBoth LSB improved communication skills (η2 = 0.115; p < 0.001), with no differences between groups. No effects on quality of life, cognition, or mood were found.ConclusionsIn PCC centres digital or conventional LSB can be useful in the treatment of people with dementia by facilitating communication. 近年来,转基因技术与产品在中国的传播遭遇了一定障碍.科学界和相关政府部门往往从科学知识的普及角度克服这些障碍.但实际上,转基因传播障碍的背后有着更为隐蔽的反智的社会态度及对传统农业的迷恋心理,三个因素都与中国传统直观外推思维方式有关.转基因传播所面临的实际是构造自然观与有机自然观之间的冲突.对有机自然观的误读与当前弥漫的反智主义关系密切,转基因带有“高科技”的突出特征,恰恰容易成为反智主义攻击的对象.在有机自然观和“反智”传统的影响下,社会上对传统农业的迷恋有着相当的市场.在此情况下,转基因技术要克服传播障碍,必须重构环境,除了以经济动力继续推动传播工作外,也要让技术发展与人们普遍接受的自然观相结合.  相似文献

Over 90 years have passed since Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin, the first recognized, naturally occurring antibiotic. Penicillin is a representative of a group of metabolites produced by large multienzyme complexes [nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs)] in a ribosome-independent fashion. Nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) are structurally diverse metabolites produced almost exclusively by bacteria and fungi. NRPs include bioactive compounds useful for pharmaceutical applications (e.g., antibiotics, antitumor compounds, and immunosuppressants) and therefore much progress has been made in our understanding of medically relevant characteristics of NRPs in the past decades. Natural roles of NRP metabolites, on the other hand, have been largely ignored, and much less is known about the biological/physiological significance of NRPs under natural settings. In the present review, we summarize past and current work on natural functions of NRPs in their fungal producers, with a focus on virulence, development, and stress tolerance, and highlight the diverse roles these small peptide metabolites play. Some NRPs are involved in interactions with host organisms, others work in fungus-environment interfaces, and still others are crucial for vegetative and reproductive development of the producing fungi.  相似文献

Announcing ant delivering results to patients from nuclear medicine tests, and particularly with PET imaging, can vary profoundly from a department to another, even from a physician to another. French regulation regarding patients’ information and access to their health data as well as the National Cancer Institute's (Institut national du cancer–INCa) most recent recommendations concerning cancer announcement ask all medical imaging specialists (nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists) to be more implicated in the announcement process. Moreover, and above all legal considerations, it is ethically difficult to refuse any kind of medical communication to a demanding patient and let that patient, sometimes alone, discover the results without any kind of medical comments from the specialist who wrote the report. Such heterogeneity is real and must therefore be understood and explored. The arguments given by physicians who do not give results or who are not implicated in cancer announcement are analyzed in a non-dogmatic fashion to find concrete answers to patients’ legitimate expectancies.  相似文献

Intercellular communication is essential for the coordination of physiological processes between cells in a variety of organs and tissues, including the brain, liver, retina, cochlea and vasculature. In experimental settings, intercellular Ca2+-waves can be elicited by applying a mechanical stimulus to a single cell. This leads to the release of the intracellular signaling molecules IP3 and Ca2+ that initiate the propagation of the Ca2+-wave concentrically from the mechanically stimulated cell to the neighboring cells. The main molecular pathways that control intercellular Ca2+-wave propagation are provided by gap junction channels through the direct transfer of IP3 and by hemichannels through the release of ATP. Identification and characterization of the properties and regulation of different connexin and pannexin isoforms as gap junction channels and hemichannels are allowed by the quantification of the spread of the intercellular Ca2+-wave, siRNA, and the use of inhibitors of gap junction channels and hemichannels. Here, we describe a method to measure intercellular Ca2+-wave in monolayers of primary corneal endothelial cells loaded with Fluo4-AM in response to a controlled and localized mechanical stimulus provoked by an acute, short-lasting deformation of the cell as a result of touching the cell membrane with a micromanipulator-controlled glass micropipette with a tip diameter of less than 1 μm. We also describe the isolation of primary bovine corneal endothelial cells and its use as model system to assess Cx43-hemichannel activity as the driven force for intercellular Ca2+-waves through the release of ATP. Finally, we discuss the use, advantages, limitations and alternatives of this method in the context of gap junction channel and hemichannel research.  相似文献

The human AAA ATPase p97 is a molecular chaperone essential in cellular proteostasis. Single amino acid substitutions in p97 have been linked to a clinical multiple-disorder condition known as inclusion body myopathy associated with Paget''s disease of the bone and frontotemporal dementia. How the mutations affect the molecular mechanism that governs the function of p97 remains unclear. Here, we show that within the hexameric ring of a mutant p97, D1 domains fail to regulate their respective nucleotide-binding states, as evidenced by the lower amount of prebound ADP, weaker ADP binding affinity, full occupancy of adenosine-5′-O-(3-thiotriphosphate) binding, and elevated overall ATPase activity, indicating a loss of communication among subunits. Defective communication between subunits is further illustrated by altered conformation in the side chain of residue Phe-360 that probes into the nucleotide-binding pocket from a neighboring subunit. Consequently, conformations of N domains in a hexameric ring of a mutant p97 become uncoordinated, thus impacting its ability to process substrate.  相似文献
