Nanotechnologies are expected to have a substantial impact on our lives in the future. However, the nanotechnology field is characterised by many uncertainties and debates surrounding the characterisation of technologies, the nature of the applications, the potential benefits and the likely risks. Given the rapid development of nanotechnologies, it is timely to consider what, if any, novel ethical challenges are posed by developments and how best to address these given the attendant uncertainties. The three articles which comprise this symposium consider the philosophical, regulatory and risk perception and communication questions that arise from this arena.  相似文献

The dawn chorus of the black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a communication network that functions in the dissemination of essential information for both males and females. Habitat type may influence the performance of this network, and if recognized, chickadees may attempt to behaviorally compensate for detrimental changes in the form of increased movement. We studied the dawn chorus of 66 black-capped chickadees in two adjacent, yet structurally different, habitats (disturbed and undisturbed) during the summers of 2000–2003 and recorded via point counts the number of neighboring males heard singing simultaneously while following a focal chorusing male and observing his movement. A transmission study to detect differential degradation due to habitat type was also conducted within the same research site. Observers in the disturbed sites heard significantly fewer neighboring males in the focal male's territory than in the undisturbed site, yet individual movement did not differ between habitat types. Propagation of song of varying frequencies, as measured by entropy, suffered less degradation in the disturbed site for high-frequency songs, but there was no effect of habitat on low- or mid-frequency songs. Greater interneighbor distance in the disturbed site likely explains some of the reduction in audibility of neighboring males during the dawn chorus, but the reduced condition of birds in the disturbed site (implicated from other studies) may also be a factor in explaining the difference in networks. The findings of this study suggest that chickadees in the disturbed habitat are experiencing a compromised communication network, which could impact breeding and other social behaviors.  相似文献

Serotonin (5-HT) is an indirect modulator of the electric organ discharge (EOD) in the weakly electric gymnotiform fish, Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus. Injections of 5-HT enhance EOD waveform "masculinity", increasing both waveform amplitude and the duration of the second phase. This study investigated the pharmacological identity of 5-HT receptors that regulate the electric waveform and their effects on EOD amplitude and duration. We present evidence that two sets of serotonin receptors modulate the EOD in opposite directions. We found that the 5HT1AR agonist 8-OH-DPAT diminishes EOD duration and amplitude while the 5HT1AR antagonist WAY100635 increases these parameters. In contrast, the 5HT2R agonist alpha-Me-5-HT increases EOD amplitude but not duration, yet 5-HT-induced increases in EOD duration can be inhibited by blocking 5HT2A/2C-like receptors with ketanserin. These results show that 5-HT exerts bi-directional control of EOD modulations in B. pinnicaudatus via action at receptors similar to mammalian 5HT1A and 5HT2 receptors. The discordant amplitude and duration response suggests separate mechanisms for modulating these waveform parameters.  相似文献

Serotonin modulates agonistic and reproductive behavior across vertebrate species. 5HT1A and 5HT1B receptors mediate many serotonergic effects on social behavior, but other receptors, including 5HT2 receptors, may also contribute. We investigated serotonergic regulation of electrocommunication signals in the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. During social interactions, these fish modulate their electric organ discharges (EODs) to produce signals known as chirps. Males chirp more than females and produce two chirp types. Males produce high-frequency chirps as courtship signals; whereas both sexes produce low-frequency chirps during same-sex interactions. Serotonergic innervation of the prepacemaker nucleus, which controls chirping, is more robust in females than males. Serotonin inhibits chirping and may contribute to sexual dimorphism and individual variation in chirping. We elicited chirps with EOD playbacks and pharmacologically manipulated serotonin receptors to determine which receptors regulated chirping. We also asked whether serotonin receptor activation generally modulated chirping or more specifically targeted particular chirp types. Agonists and antagonists of 5HT1B/1D receptors (CP-94253 and GR-125743) did not affect chirping. The 5HT1A receptor agonist 8OH-DPAT specifically increased production of high-frequency chirps. The 5HT2 receptor agonist DOI decreased chirping. Receptor antagonists (WAY-100635 and MDL-11939) opposed the effects of their corresponding agonists. These results suggest that serotonergic inhibition of chirping may be mediated by 5HT2 receptors, but that serotonergic activation of 5HT1A receptors specifically increases the production of high-frequency chirps. The enhancement of chirping by 5HT1A receptors may result from interactions with cortisol and/or arginine vasotocin, which similarly enhance chirping and are influenced by 5HT1A activity in other systems.  相似文献

Among the ideas proposed to explain the existence of the dawn chorus in songbirds, the acoustic transmission hypothesis claims that birds sing most intensively at dawn because this is the time of the day when songs suffer least from environmentally induced degradation and hence propagate over the longest distances. In this article, we report on the first sound transmission experiment that directly tests this assumption using natural song from a typically forest-living dawn chorusing bird, the blackcap Sylvia atricapilla. Representative sound elements from the introductory twitter part and from the terminating motif part of the blackcap song were transmitted and re-recorded at three different times of the day: dawn, midmorning, and early afternoon. These recordings were then compared with respect to the following measures of sound degradation: signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), excess attenuation, blurring over song elements, and elongation of song elements by tails of echoes. As could be expected, both the background noise and the SNR varied considerably over the day. More surprisingly the excess attenuation decreased during the day, being lowest in the afternoon. There was no diurnal variation in blurring and elongation by echoes. The results may be explained by the diurnal variation in physical parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. The implications of this for different communication activities are discussed. Overall, the results show that dawn conditions in a temperate deciduous forest do not always constitute the best circumstances for long-range communication and therefore that the dawn chorus cannot be explained by the sound transmission hypothesis. Both genetic factors and life experiences appear to be important in shaping dogs’ responses in a test situation. One potentially highly relevant life experience may be the dog's training history, however few studies have investigated this aspect so far. This paper briefly reviews studies focusing on the effects of training on dogs’ performance in cognitive tasks, and presents new, preliminary evidence on trained and untrained pet dogs’ performance in an ‘unsolvable task’. Thirty-nine adult dogs: 13 trained for search and rescue activities (S&R group), 13 for agility competition (Agility group) and 13 untrained pets (Pet group) were tested. Three ‘solvable’ trials in which dogs could obtain the food by manipulating a plastic container were followed by an ‘unsolvable’ trial in which obtaining the food became impossible. The dogs’ behaviours towards the apparatus and the people present (owner and researcher) were analysed. Both in the first ‘solvable’ and in the ‘unsolvable’ trial the groups were comparable on actions towards the apparatus, however differences emerged in their human-directed gazing behaviour. In fact, results in the ‘solvable’ trial, showed fewer S&R dogs looking back at a person compared to agility dogs, and the latter alternating their gaze between person and apparatus more frequently than pet dogs. In the unsolvable trial no difference between groups emerged in the latency to look at the person however agility dogs looked longer at the owner than both pet and S&R dogs; whereas S&R dogs exhibited significantly more barking (always occurring concurrently to looking at the person or the apparatus) than both other groups. Furthermore, S&R dogs alternated their gaze between person and apparatus more than untrained pet dogs, with agility dogs falling in between these two groups. Thus overall, it seems that the dogs’ human-directed communicative behaviours are significantly influenced by their individual training experiences.  相似文献

Biodiversity is being lost at alarming rates in spite of efforts to conserve ecosystems, species and genetic diversity. There is broad consensus that biodiversity conservation needs to become more effective, and this requires an analysis of the causes that have prevented previous efforts from reaching their goal. A lack of knowledge exchange and cooperation between science and practice has been identified as a key issue in this context. Scientific knowledge frequently does not find its way into conservation practice, and information requirements by practitioners are often not considered appropriately by scientists. Here, we summarize deficits and challenges in the relationship between science and practice in conservation and outline approaches to achieving more effective knowledge exchange and collaboration at the interface between both. We propose that existing platforms for communication need to be complemented by independent institutions in particular at national and sub-national levels to facilitate successful co-production of knowledge as a prerequisite for effective conservation measures.  相似文献

Ranging, the ability to judge the distance to a sound source, depends on the presence of predictable patterns of attenuation. We measured long-range sound propagation in coastal waters to assess whether humpback whales might use frequency degradation cues to range singing whales. Two types of neural networks, a multi-layer and a single-layer perceptron, were trained to classify recorded sounds by distance traveled based on their frequency content. The multi-layer network successfully classified received sounds, demonstrating that the distorting effects of underwater propagation on frequency content provide sufficient cues to estimate source distance. Normalizing received sounds with respect to ambient noise levels increased the accuracy of distance estimates by single-layer perceptrons, indicating that familiarity with background noise can potentially improve a listening whale's ability to range. To assess whether frequency patterns predictive of source distance were likely to be perceived by whales, recordings were pre-processed using a computational model of the humpback whale's peripheral auditory system. Although signals processed with this model contained less information than the original recordings, neural networks trained with these physiologically based representations estimated source distance more accurately, suggesting that listening whales should be able to range singers using distance-dependent changes in frequency content.  相似文献

Cyclic AMP serves as an intracellular messenger in cells and regulates a variety of biological functions by transmitting information through proteins. These proteins of different functions all consist of a cAMP-binding motif, and the structure of this motif is highly conserved with an exception of the loop 3 and 4. In current study, cAMP receptor protein was employed as a model system to investigate the function of the two loops. The results indicated that the loop 3 involves in the intersubunits communication of CRP, whereas the loop 4 involves in cAMP binding and interdomains communication.  相似文献

Local ecological knowledge (LEK) of those who earn their livelihoods from natural environments has long been recognized as providing far-reaching insights into ecological processes. It is being increasingly used by ecologists to address diverse questions that often focus on applied conservation issues and may incorporate local knowledge with biological data from more conventional research and monitoring. We characterize how LEK has been used in the ecological and conservation literature over the last 25 years by broadly examining 360 journals and by evaluating 12 prominent ecological and conservation journals in greater detail. Over this period, the use of LEK has increased considerably, although only 0.01% of papers in the broad and 0.42% of those in the more detailed evaluation incorporated LEK. Despite this increase, LEK-based publications remain nearly absent from the more established theoretical literature and are largely restricted to more recent and arguably less prestigious applied and interdisciplinary journals. Most LEK studies used interviews, but generally failed to actively include community members in the research process. Changes to the research and publishing process that include local people and address these shortcomings and the broader issues of power and influence in the sciences are critical to the successful utilization of LEK. These changes are necessary for the appropriate depiction of these knowledge systems and to ensure that local knowledge holders will continue participating in ecological research aimed at conservation.  相似文献
