An important question in stingless bee communication is whether the thorax vibrations produced by foragers of the genus Melipona upon their return to the nest contain spatial information about food sources or not. As previously shown M. seminigra is able to use visual flow to estimate flight distances. The present study investigated whether foraging bees encode the visually measured distance in their thorax vibrations. Bees were trained to collect food in flight tunnels lined with a black-and-white pattern on their side walls and floor, which substantially influenced the image motion they experienced. When the bees had collected inside the tunnels the temporal pattern of their vibrations differed significantly from the pattern after collecting in a natural environment. These changes, however, were not associated with the visual flow experienced inside the tunnel. Bees collecting in tunnels offering little visual flow (stripes parallel to flight direction) modified their vibrations similarly to bees collecting in tunnels with high image motion (cross stripes). A higher energy expenditure due to drastically reduced flight velocities inside the tunnel is suggested to be responsible for changes in the thorax vibrations. The bees' vibrations would thus reflect the overall energetic budget of a foraging trip.  相似文献

The trigeminal motor (Vmo), facial (VII), and hypoglossal (XII) nuclei of the brainstem comprise the final common output for neural control of most orofacial muscles. Hence, these cranial motor nuclei are involved in the production of adaptive behaviors such as feeding, facial expression, and vocalization. We measured the volume and Grey Level Index (GLI) of Vmo, VII, and XII in 47 species of primates and examined these nuclei for scaling patterns and phylogenetic specializations. Allometric regression, using medulla volume as an independent variable, did not reveal a significant difference between strepsirrhines and haplorhines in the scaling of Vmo volume. In addition, correlation analysis using independent contrasts did not find a relationship between Vmo size or GLI and the percent of leaves in the diet. The scaling trajectory of VII volume, in contrast, differed significantly between suborders. Great ape and human VII volumes, furthermore, were significantly larger than predicted by the haplorhine regression. Enlargement of VII in these taxa may reflect increased differentiation of the facial muscles of expression and greater utilization of the visual channel in social communication. The independent contrasts of VII volume and GLI, however, were not correlated with social group size. To examine whether the human hypoglossal motor system is specialized to control the tongue for speech, we tested human XII volume and GLI for departures from nonhuman haplorhine prediction lines. Although human XII volumes were observed above the regression line, they did not exceed prediction intervals. Of note, orang-utan XII volumes had greater residuals than humans. Human XII GLI values also did not differ from allometric prediction. In sum, these findings indicate that the cranial orofacial motor nuclei evince a mosaic of phylogenetic specializations for innervation of the facial muscles of expression in the context of a generally conservative scaling relationship with respect to medulla size.  相似文献

The faculty of language is unique to the human species. This implies that there are human-specific biological changes that lie at the basis of human language. However, it is not clear what the nature of such changes are, and how they could be shaped by evolution. In this paper, emphasis is laid on describing language in a Chomskyan manner, as a mental object. Communication and social behaviour are inextricably linked, with communication mediating important social behaviours such as resource defence and mate attraction. However, the social environment in which communication occurs is often ignored in discussions of communication behaviour. We argue that networks of several individuals are the common social environment for communication behaviour. The consequences for receivers and signallers of communicating in a network environment are the main subjects of this review. Eavesdropping is a receiving behaviour that is only possible in the environment of a network and therefore we concentrate on this behaviour. The main effect of communication networks on signallers is to create competition with other signallers for receiver attention. We discuss the consequences of such competition. To conclude, we explore the role of signals and signalling interactions as sources of information that animals exploit to direct their behaviour. Pant hoots, a type of long-distance calls of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), were played back to two male chimpanzees in a group of seven captive individuals to determine if chimpanzees would modify those vocalizations in response to strange males. Subjects emitted pant hoots with higher rates of delivery, shorter duration of buildup, and lower minimum fundamental frequency of climax when they were presented with pant hoots of strangers than when they produced the calls spontaneously. Considering the direction of acoustical change, we concluded that the rate of delivery, duration of buildup, and minimum frequency of climax might be associated with the underlying emotional states of the callers rather than call matching. Individual difference between two subject males was significant in minimum frequency and duration of climax and in average frequency of call, which appears to reflect differences of the caller's age and social status. These results suggest that different acoustic variables relate to within- and interindividual differences of these vocalizations. Received: March 7, 2000 / Accepted: May 8, 2000  相似文献

This article addresses the relation between the current proliferation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) goods and services and the development of different kinds of risk assessments and policy documents. The ambition is to shed light on a, hithertho, less-discussed aspect of the development of risk assessments and policy documents, namely the time span between the development of new technologies and the development of regulatory frameworks. The concept of risk and danger can be seen as a potential means through which we can start to think about the consequences of the delay between the increased generation of electronic waste (e-waste) and the regulations to manage this increase. By using e-waste as a case study, this article provides the basis for a more general understanding of the relation between the development of new technologies and the development of regulatory frameworks. While it might be difficult to pin down the effects that this delay had/has for the subsequent development of ICTs, this article highlights the importance of taking into account not only how and by whom risk assessments and policy documents are developed, but also when they are developed in relation to the technologies that they serve to regulate.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that movement of kinesin motor proteins is accomplished by coupling ATP binding, hydrolysis, and product release to conformational changes in the microtubule-binding and force-generating elements of their motor domain. Therefore, understanding how the Saccharomyces cerevisiae proteins Cik1 and Vik1 are able to function as direct participants in movement of Kar3Cik1 and Kar3Vik1 kinesin complexes presents an interesting challenge given that their motor homology domain (MHD) cannot bind ATP. Our crystal structures of the Vik1 ortholog from Candida glabrata may provide insight into this mechanism by showing that its neck and neck mimic-like element can adopt several different conformations reminiscent of those observed in catalytic kinesins. We found that when the neck is α-helical and interacting with the MHD core, the C terminus of CgVik1 docks onto the central β-sheet similarly to the ATP-bound form of Ncd. Alternatively, when neck-core interactions are broken, the C terminus is disordered. Mutations designed to impair neck rotation, or some of the neck-MHD interactions, decreased microtubule gliding velocity and steady state ATPase rate of CgKar3Vik1 complexes significantly. These results strongly suggest that neck rotation and neck mimic docking in Vik1 and Cik1 may be a structural mechanism for communication with Kar3.  相似文献

目的:通过分析一起新型冠状病毒肺炎(coronavirus disease 2019,COVID-19)聚集性疫情病例的流行病学特征,为疫情防控提供科学参考依据。方法:以新型冠状病毒肺炎防控技术方案的相关内容为依据,对一起聚集性疫情病例发病、就诊、接触方式及代际传播等进行描述性流行病学分析。结果:该起聚集性疫情涉及6例确诊病例,波及人数为98人,感染率为5.10%(5/98),其中男性3例、女性3例,年龄25~72岁,临床表现为发热4例、乏力2例、干咳2例、咳痰1例、呼吸困难1例、呕吐1例、腹泻1例、肌肉酸痛1例,临床表现严重程度分为普通型5例,重型1例,从发病到诊断平均时间间隔5.3 d,从诊断到报告平均时间间隔1.2 h,本起疫情暴露场所为家庭,以近距离飞沫或密切接触为接触方式传播的,潜伏期中位数7 d(6 d~12 d)。指示病例为男性、51岁,二代病例共4例,三代病例1例。结论:本起聚集性疫情以家庭为暴露场所,且以近距离飞沫或密切接触为接触方式传播,通过加强疫情预警、监测,对病例早发现、早报告、早隔离、早治疗以及对其密切接触者的严格筛查和管理,达到有效防控疫情发生、发展及防止蔓延。  相似文献

Interventions that aim to help farmers change on-farm practices recommend that advisors communicate effectively with farmers, work collaboratively to set goals and provide farmers with resources that are applicable to the farm context. We developed an intervention that aimed to help farmers modify and use a standard operating procedure (SOP) for colostrum management; failure of passive transfer of immunoglobulins is common on dairy farms and SOPs for colostrum management are increasingly required by farm animal welfare assurance programs. We used Realistic Evaluation to evaluate whether, how and why our intervention to help farmers modify and use SOPs for colostrum management facilitated change and provide recommendations based on our approach that can improve the design and implementation of future interventions. We used a multiple case study on five farms over 8 months, collecting data through interviews, participant observation, document analysis and field notes. We identified three mechanisms that influenced whether participants modified and used their SOP. The purpose mechanism distinguished between participants who thought the aim of the SOP was for farm staff to learn and understand how to complete a task versus those who thought that the SOP was only useful for compliance with assurance programs. The utility mechanism distinguished between participants who thought that the SOP would be helpful for daily use on their farm, versus those who did not. The physical text mechanism distinguished between participants who used the templates we provided to modify and use their SOP, versus those who did not. A key contextual factor on all farms was participant belief of having capable and engaged staff on their farm; modification and use of the SOP did not occur unless this was the case. To facilitate change, intervention developers should actively participate in the intervention to develop an understanding of farmer needs, understand the purpose behind different goals set by farmers and integrate tools, advice and resource demonstrations when possible. We conclude that Realistic Evaluation is a useful framework for evaluating how contexts and mechanisms generate outcomes on farms, and to understand how, and in which contexts, complex interventions facilitate change. We suggest that this approach can improve the success of interventions and help direct the approaches used on different farms.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Phonemic restoration, a form of temporal induction, occurs when the human brain compensates for masked or missing portions of speech by filling in obscured or nonexistent sounds. We tested for temporal induction and related abilities in females of the Gray Treefrog Hyla versicolor. The number of pulses in calls is used by females for assessment of males. Accordingly, an ability to “restore” or interpolate between masked or otherwise sonically degraded portions of calls could help females during mate choice in noisy choruses. In phonotaxis experiments, we employed unmodified calls and those that had a centrally placed gap, a region overlapped by a portion of another call or filtered noise, or replaced with filtered noise. When offered call alternatives with equivalent numbers of clear pulses, we found that females discriminated against calls with gaps two or more times greater than the natural 25 ms interpulse interval. When a gap was replaced with a zone of call overlap or noise (so, again the call durations of the alternatives were unequal), females discriminated either in favour (overlap) of the modified stimuli or failed to discriminate (noise). However, when the unmodified and modified stimuli were the same duration, females discriminated against the latter. Normal calls were also chosen when paired against calls with multiple noise sections. Pulses formed from noise bursts were attractive, but less so than normal pulses. In single speaker tests, standardized rates of movement did not differ between calls containing noise segments of different duration. Our results therefore do not indicate that females of the Gray Treefrog employ a form of temporal induction that is fully restorative. However, the data indicate that acoustically anomalous sections of calls can retain attractive potential provided acoustic energy and pulses are present.  相似文献
