Short-term changes in abundance, feeding, respiration and spawningby the copepod Acartia tonsa were studied during four 24 h periodsat two stations in a Mediterranean lagoon in May and June of1989 and 1990. Nightly increases of abundance in the upper layer, attributed to nocturnal upward migration, were observed in threeout of the four time series. Nevertheless, occasional dailyincreases were observed too, so that no clear diel patternsin abundance could be defined. Contrarily, diel patterns seemedto appear: (i) for feeding (higher at the beginning of the night),based on gut fluorescence and clearance and ingestion rate measurements;(ii) for respiration (lower at night and based on 8 h incubationperiods); and (iii) for spawning (higher at the end of the night, based on experimental data). The origin of these patterns, aswell as their relationships to environmental data and theirpossible association, are discussed with regard to the availableliterature.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of Cu, Cd and Cr to the marine copepod Tisbe holothuriae, Humes, was estimated by static bioassays and the LC inf50 su48h (in mg/l) was calculated. Copper proved to be the most toxic (LC inf50 su48h = 0,08 ± 0,01 mg/l) and chromium the least toxic (LC inf50 su48h = 8,14 ± 0,05 mg/l), while cadmium showed an intermediate toxicity (LC inf50 su48h = 0,97 ± 0,04 mg/l).In mixtures of the two metals an obvious synergism of the effects was observed in all cases. In all three combinations with two metals (Cu + Cd, Cu + Cr, and Cd + Cr) the mortality was higher than that expected on a purely additive basis. The mixture of the three metals presented a higher toxicity than that of the individual metals acting separately, but lower than that of all two metals mixture.  相似文献

Variations in size (prosome), body volume and proportion (prosome:urosome ratio) of female Acartia tonsa copepods were studied during three different seasons (June, October and November) in a network of 13 stations distributed throughout the Berre Lagoon, near Marseille. Strong morphological differences were found between the populations collected through the different seasonal surveys, but also between the different stations or groups of stations. They were related to the variations of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, particulate seston) according to the season and to the location of the stations (submitted to the marine influence in the south and to the intake of fresh water in the north of the lagoon). Considering all seasonal data, the size and body volume were inversely related to temperature. Body volume also showed a negative correlation with chlorophyll and carbon and a positive one with the C:N ratio of particles. The body proportion was positively correlated with temperature, chlorophyll and carbon. For each seasonal survey, the relationship between morphological features and environmental factors did not reach the significant level except in October when body proportion and volume were positively correlated to chlorophyll.Nevertheless, for each season, significant spatial changes in size or body proportion appeared in parts of the population of Acartia tonsa, in relation with local specific conditions of environmental factors, especially chlorophyll. These biometric differences suggest that individuals must develop in situ for at least the final period of larval growth, despite the dispersion effect caused by hydrodynamic movements. This stability in horizontal distribution may result from the diurnal vertical migrations of copepods between the surface and the bottom, two layers displaying currents of opposite directions. These results justify the use of somatic features (size and body proportion) to discriminate sets of individuals belonging to the same population. %  相似文献

The toxicity of chromium to the marine planktonic copepodAcartia clausi, Giesbrecht was studied. The LC50 48 h values (concentration of chromium lethal to 50% of the test animals) vary with the experimental temperature, the form of chromium compound tested and the annual generation to which theAcartia specimens belong. The elevation of temperature resulted in a considerable increase ofAcartia's sensitivity to chromium. Cr6+ in the form of Na2CrO4 was more toxic toA. clausi than in the form of CrO3 · Cr3+ in the form of Cr(NO3)3 9 H2O precipitated to the bottom and was not toxic toAcartia.Acartia specimens belonging to the summer generation were more sensitive to chromium than those belonging to the winter or autumn generation. The exposure ofAcartia to sublethal concentrations of chromium resulted in a reduction of its longevity proportional to the chromium concentrations used.Furthermore, whenA. clausi was exposed to sublethal chromium concentrations it showed a decrease of feeding capacity and increase of respiratory rates, which became more pronounced with increasing chromium concentrations.  相似文献

In the Berre lagoon, a large brackish and swallow area near Marseille, the environmental factors (temperature, salinity, oxygen, suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll) generally display strong space and time variations. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and the copepod Acartia tonsa constitute the bulk of the zooplankton population during all the year. Their space and time distributions were studied in 23 stations distributed all over the lagoon, during four seasonal cruises (February, June, October, November), at surface and bottom layers. There is no marked difference in the horizontal and vertical distribution of the two species, (except in November when rotifers were prevailing in surface and copepods at depth) and in their time occurence. When the four series of data are pooled, correlation analysis show that A.tonsa is positively correlated with temperature, salinity and seston and negatively to oxygen and chlorophyll. B. plicatilis is positively correlated with temperature and seston, but also with chlorophyll, while salinity has a negative effect. The specific eggs number of both species is chlorophyll dependent. Considering seasonal cruises separately, some differences appear in the sense or the significance of these different correlations. The respective distribution of the two species is only partly dependent on the variation of the environmental factors: most of the variance remains unexplained, as indicated by the result of a stepwise multiple regression analysis using the most significant factors (temperature, salinity and oxygen explain 33 to 42% of the variance in Acartia, while temperature and salinity explain 27 to 28% of the variance in Brachionus). Thus, internal behavioral factors could also play a role in the distribution of organisms, particularly in some cases of aggregations of organisms observed during this study. As the two species occupied the same space habitat most of the year, they are potentially in competition for food. A way to optimize the food utilization could be the time separation of their feeding activity, nocturnal in Acartia and diurnal in Brachionus. Another way could be selective feeding upon food particles depending on their size (Brachionus being able to use finer particles than Acartia) or their quality (Brachionus being more herbivorous than Acartia) as demonstrated in some grazing experiments carried out in parallel.  相似文献

A study was made of the toxicity of copper to the marine copepod Tisbe holothuriae Humes and the development of increased tolerance due to acclimation. In sublethal concentrations, copper causes a prolongation of maturation time and a reduction in offspring production. These effects increased proportionally to the copper concentration used, while the respiratory rate (measured at the highest concentration used: 0.008 mg l–1 Cu) increased. A tendency for higher tolerance due to acclimation was also observed. The copper induced delay in maturation time observed in the F2 generation, became less pronounced from F3 onwards. In animals exposed at 0.008 mg l–1 Cu the maturation time of F3 was not statistically different from that of untreated animals. The LC50 48 h also presented an increase due to acclimation in animals exposed at 0.004 (F5) and 0.008 mg l–1 Cu (F3 and F5 generations), but this increase was not statistically significant.  相似文献

The longevity of two populations of the planktonic copepod Acartia clausi in the Saronicos Gulf was estimated. One group lived in a heavily polluted area, the other group in a relatively clean area. Three annual generations were studied. A comparison was also made between fed and unfed animals. A temperature of 14°C appeared to be the most favourable for the survival of Acartia; however, the optimum survival temperature depended also upon the generation to which the Acartia belonged. The acclimatization temperature has a strong influence on survival. Acartia in its natural environment thrives best and has maximum longevity at colder temperatures. The pollution-adapted Acartia population survived longer under laboratory-controlled conditions than the population living in a non-polluted area.  相似文献
