This paper deals with the variations on feeding activities and diel migrations of Acartia tonsa Dana, the dominant copepod species in Berre lagoon (west Mediterranean French coasts).A 27 hour in situ study was carried out during June 1989, at a station located in the south west of the lagoon. Vertical profiles of salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen taken each 12 hours showed a stratification of the water column in two distinct layers: (1) a superficial layer with higher temperature, moderate salinity, and high oxygen concentrations; (2) a colder, more saline and almost anoxic deep layer. In situ chlorophyll a measurements were made at –1, –3 and –5 m; concentrations were relatively homogeneous through the water column during the whole sampling period.Zooplankton samples were collected every 3 hours with a 200 µm mesh net, in three strata (0–2 m, 2–4 m, 4–6 m). A complete dominance of A. tonsa was observed in the zooplankton community. Our results point out clearly a nocturnal migration, with individuals concentrating in both superficial layers; thus an unimodal migratory pattern can be inferred. Gut flourescence measured following the Mackas & Bohrer technique (1976), showed higher values during night time, and values for females were the highest with wider day—night variations. Similar results were found in laboratory experiments with copepods fed with a culture of Dunaliella tertiolecta.Gut evacuation rate was measured in two laboratory experiments either mixing or separating males and females. Evacuation rate was 17.92 and 27.25 min for males and females respectively.Phytoplankton daily ration for A. tonsa calculated by gut flourescence and gut evacuation rate was particularly low, for it represents only 10% of the individual carbon weight.Moreover, grazing impact on phytoplankton is very restricted, it represents less than 1% of the daily phytoplankton stock.  相似文献

Effects of temperature (18, 24, and 30°C), salinity (5–40 ppt, five intervals) and algal foods (Synechococcus sp., Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Isochrysis zhanjiangensis, Dunaliella salina and Tetraselmis cordiformis) on the life table demography of six geographical Brachionus plicatilis sensu stricto clones, which had been identified according to the prevalent taxonomy and biometric analysis of B. plicatilis sensu lato, were studied. The results showed that temperature, salinity and temperature × salinity significantly influenced the life history parameters. Genotype (clone) had no effect on the population growth rate but did influence the net reproductive rate, generation time and lifespan. All rotifer clones showed the expected increase in population growth rate with increasing temperature. B. plicatilis s. s. attained a higher population growth rate at low–medium salinities (5–20 ppt) than at high salinities (25–40 ppt). The equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) of food algae, salinity and ESD × salinity had significant effects on the life history parameters. In this case, genotype had no effect on population growth rate, net reproductive rate and generation time but did influence lifespan. The population growth rate of B. plicatilis s. s. evaluated against particle retention spectrum of algae at two salinities resulted in bell-shaped curves. Dunaliella salina with an ESD = 7.7 μm was considered to be the best food for B. plicatilis s. s. while Synechococcus appeared to be an inadequate food algae.  相似文献

During the period of construction of a storm-surge barrier current velocities decreased strongly and the Eastern compartment of the basin obtained a lagoon-like character. The rotifer Synchaeta spp., already abundant in the neighbouring salt and brackish lakes, profited from this condition. Higher and less fluctuating salinities caused the estuarine character of this compartment to disappear in the post-barrier years. This was reflected in the obscured succession of some Acartia species: the estuarine A. tonsa dominated in pre-barrier- and barrier years during summer, while the marine A. clausi was abundant in the post-barrier Oosterschelde during that time. Also the changed food conditions (Bakker & Vink, 1993) may have played a role in this phenomenon.Further changes in species composition were hardly observed. The seasonal variation in length of the most abundant copepod species in the lagoon of Venice were compared and the relative influence of temperature, chlorophyll concentration and salinity examined. Temperature seems to be the primary factor influencing copepod body length in the lagoon of Venice, but the different species vary markedly in their response. Calanoid copepods (Acartia clausi, A. tonsa, Paracalanus parvus and Centropages ponticus) showed a more definite trend of size variation with temperature than the cyclopoids (Oithona nana and O. similis) and the harpacticoid Euterpina acutifrons. The size of the poecilostomatoids Oncaea media and O. subtilis was not affected by temperature, and was almost constant over time. Differences in the metabolic rates, longevity and specialization of calanoid, cyclopoid and harpacticoid copepods could explain their different responses to temperature.  相似文献

Acartia spp. are the dominant copepod species in the Gironde estuary, seaward of the turbidity maximum area. Acartia bifilosa develop a large population in spring and early summer whereas Acartia tonsa appear in late summer. High values and high variability of chlorophyll a/suspended particulate matter ratio are found seaward of the turbidity maximum area. Feeding rates of A. bifilosa were measured by fluorometry. Phytoplankton ingestion was found to be highly variable, between 8 to 80% of copepod carbon body weight. Except for adult females, copepods were heavier in summer than in winter. PB ratios, estimated by the instantaneous growth rate method, varied from 0.03 d–1 to 0.14 d–1. The gut contents and P/B ratios of Acartia bifilosa were related to chl a/SPM ratio. From those data, and a few obtained for A. tonsa, it is concluded that only in summer months phytoplankton ingestion is enough to maintain secondary production.  相似文献

Annual succession and ecological niche formation among six dominant coexisting species of the genus Acartia were studied between 1979 and 1989. The coexisting species: A. discaudata, A. clausi, A. grani, A. italica, A. josephinae and A. latisetosa formed dense populations at different periods in Jounieh harbour (Central Lebanon, eastern Mediterranean). Using numerical data analysis, I defined and measured niche hyperspaces and niche overlaps of these species. Although both spatial and temporal segregation occurred between congeners, the amount of niche overlap was estimated in relation to the availability, use, and abundance of natural resources. The hydrobiological factors prevailing in the port were considered resource states. They include eight parameters: water temperature and salinity, dissolved oxygen, mineral phosphate, nitrate, chlorophyll-a concentration, plankton biomass, and species diversity of the plankton community. Some competition occurred between the co-existing species and an attempt is made to estimate this. As a result of this competition different ecological niches have developed for each species. Niche overlaps, their hyperspaces, and niche breadth between the congeners are estimated and computed using several indices, such as those based on Levin's and Lloyd's formulae. Two groups of Acartia congeners are defined: a group of spring affinity formed by A. clausi, A. discaudata, and A. grani and a second group involving A. italica, A. josephinae and A.-latisetosa, showing a spring-summer tendency. These coexisting species exhibited certain strategies in their opportunistic behaviours, in order to adapt to a highly variable marine environment, such as the one found in Jounieh port.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of zooplankton were studied in relation to profiles of temperature, oxygen and chlorophyll a in Roi Lake, a small meromictic lake in central Alberta. Zooplankton were distributed fairly evenly through the oxygenated part of the water column in early summer, but a gradual descent of several species became evident in June. The vertical distribution of chlorophyll was dominated by a huge peak at the 8- to 9-m-deep chemocline. the location of a plate of photosynthetic sulfur bacteria. Ambient concentration of chlorophyll was a poor predictor of the numbers of zooplankton and the fecundity of Daphnia pulicaria at different depths, and per capita birth rates of Daphnia were usually highest in the surface waters. The reproductively disadvantageous restriction of daphnids to deep water by late summer and their catastrophic decline in the face of high ambient concentrations of chlorophyll suggest that factors other than temperature and food supply are important in influencing the dynamics and distribution of zooplankton in this lake.  相似文献

Variations in size (prosome), body volume and proportion (prosome:urosome ratio) of female Acartia tonsa copepods were studied during three different seasons (June, October and November) in a network of 13 stations distributed throughout the Berre Lagoon, near Marseille. Strong morphological differences were found between the populations collected through the different seasonal surveys, but also between the different stations or groups of stations. They were related to the variations of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, particulate seston) according to the season and to the location of the stations (submitted to the marine influence in the south and to the intake of fresh water in the north of the lagoon). Considering all seasonal data, the size and body volume were inversely related to temperature. Body volume also showed a negative correlation with chlorophyll and carbon and a positive one with the C:N ratio of particles. The body proportion was positively correlated with temperature, chlorophyll and carbon. For each seasonal survey, the relationship between morphological features and environmental factors did not reach the significant level except in October when body proportion and volume were positively correlated to chlorophyll.Nevertheless, for each season, significant spatial changes in size or body proportion appeared in parts of the population of Acartia tonsa, in relation with local specific conditions of environmental factors, especially chlorophyll. These biometric differences suggest that individuals must develop in situ for at least the final period of larval growth, despite the dispersion effect caused by hydrodynamic movements. This stability in horizontal distribution may result from the diurnal vertical migrations of copepods between the surface and the bottom, two layers displaying currents of opposite directions. During four cruises in continental shelf waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico in the winters of 1981–83, we performed quantitative studies on the grazing of the copepods Acartia tonsa, Centropages velificatus, and Eucalanus pileatus, on phytoplankton using natural particulate assemblages as food. Stations were in, or adjacent to the plume of the Mississippi River, thereby providing wide spectra of phytoplankton and suspended riverine particulate concentrations. Phytoplankton cell volume was converted to carbon, and this, coupled with carbon content measurements of these three copepod species, allowed comparisons of daily ingestion effort even though the copepods were of different sizes. Data were expressed in the same units (% of copepod body carbon ingested copepod –1 d–1) for each species. Over similar ranges of phytoplankton carbon concentrations (0.21–92.06 gCl–1), Acartia tonsa had higher carbon-specific ingestion rates (x = 22.31%, range = 0.08–152.37%) than C. velificatus (x = 2.8%, range = 0.00–31.09 %) or E. pileatus (x = 1.27%, range = 0.10–2.80%). Carbon-specific ingestion rates increased with increasing phytoplankton carbon concentration for A. tonsa (R2 = 0.81) and there was no evidence of saturated feeding on the carbon concentrations offered. A similar, but weaker trend was evident for E. pileatus (R2 = 0.71), but not C. velificatus (R2 = 0.49). Over a wide range of suspended particulate concentrations (10.6–95.2 mg l–1), there was no systematic effect of particulates on carbon-specific ingestion rate for any of the three copepod species. However, A. tonsa appeared more adept at grazing in highly turbid water than C. velificatus or E. pileatus.  相似文献

Batch cultures and continuous flow cultures were used to study the growth rates of zooplankton species from Shira lake, the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Muller and calanoid copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus Daday, which were fed on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton from the lake. Analyses of the birth and survival rates were used to demonstrate that the lake phytoplankton, consisting mostly of cyanobacteria and diatomaceous algae, is inadequotes for optimal realisation of the reproductive potential of B. plicatilis when compared with the bacterial diet. The study revealed that the kinetic growth characteristics of the two zooplankters were similar: B. plicatilis r max, 0.120 d–1; S 0, 0.253; and K s, 0.114 mg dry mass l–1; and for A. salinus r max, 0.129 d–1; S 0, 0.240; and K s, 0.171 mg dry mass l–1. Fluctuations in natural food concentration reduced the growth rate of both species. Even though the threshold concentration of food for B. plicatilis and A. salinus were quite similar, the copepods were less sensitive to food limitation.  相似文献

In this study 200 zooplankton samples were Burjassotcollected (1979–1980), from 57 different wetlands in coastal Mediterranean Spain (CMS) and examined for the occurrence of Brachionus species. Data on 17 separate physical and chemical features of these water bodies were obtained from samples collected at the same time. Ten different Brachionus species were found in these wetlands, but only six occurred frequently enough to allow further examination of their distributional patterns using multivariate discriminant analysis. To separate these species, three analyses were performed using the 17 physical and chemical parameters, or their ratios. Three discriminant functions accounted for 80% or more of the among species variance. Separation of species occurred on each discriminant function which could be attributed to a reduced number of parameters. These were mainly temperature, sulphate, chloride, alkalinity and alkaline earths.  相似文献

Clearance and ingestion rates of Brachionus plicatilis were measured using 14C-labeled Isochrysis galbana Tahiti. Experiments were conducted at 20–22 °C, 20 ppt salinity, and algal concentrations ranging from 0.13–64 mg C 1–1. Clearance rates were constant and maximal at concentrations <2 mg C 1–1, with maximum rates ranging from 3.4–6.9 µl ind.–1 hr–1. The ingestion rate varied with food concentration, and was described by a rectilinear model. The maximum ingestion rate varied considerably, and was dependent on the growth rate of the rotifers. Depending on the pre-conditions, B. plicatilis ingested about 0.5 to 2 times its body carbon per day at saturating food concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

The phytoplankton study on the S'Ena Arrubia Lagoon started in 1990, after dystrophic events, leading to high fish mortality and consequently great economic losses. This study presents a general picture of the conditions of the lagoon between 1990 and 1995, and reports on the quali-quantitative changes in the phytoplanktonic populations, as well as the trends of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, algal nutrients and chlorophyll a. The lagoon was characterized by great changes in salinity between years and within the same year, by high nutrient contents and by a phytoplankton trend characterized by sudden intense blooms mostly due to the Chlorophyceae and the Bacillariophyceae. The number of species found, decreased from 1990 to 1994, followed by a slight increase in 1995. The same trend was also found for total density and chlorophyll a.  相似文献

In brackish lagoons, Daphnia is replaced by calanoid copepods (Eurytemora affinis, Acartia spp.) and rotifers when a certain threshold (depending on, for instance, fish density) is reached. We hypothesize that loss of Daphnia induces a regime shift from clear to turbid at high nutrient concentrations. We conducted a factorial designed enclosure experiment with contrasting salinities (0–16‰), low fish predation (one three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, m−2) and three levels of nutrient loading in a shallow brackish lagoon. A change point analysis suggests a strong regime shift from a clear to a turbid state at 6–8‰ salinity at low and high loading, but not for the control. From the low to the high salt regime, chlorophyll a (Chla), Chla:total phosphorus (TP) and Chla:total nitrogen (TN) ratios shifted highly significantly for all nutrient treatments, and the bacterioplankton production followed the changes in Chla. These changes occurred parallel with a shift from cladoceran and cyclopoid copepod to rotifer dominance. Monitoring data from 60 Danish brackish lagoons show increasing Chla with increasing TP and TN as well as interactive effects of TN and salinity, peaking at intermediate salinity. A relatively weak effect of salinity at low nutrient concentrations and the stronger effect at intermediate high salinity are in accordance with the experimental results. However, these data suggest a lower salinity threshold than in the experiment, which may be explained by a higher fish density. Our results have implications for the management of coastal lagoons both at present and in a future (predicted) warmer climate: (1) improved water quality can be obtained by reducing the nutrient loading or enhancing the freshwater input to a level triggering a shift to Daphnia dominance (typically <2‰), (2) fish manipulation is probably not a useful tool for brackish lagoons, unless the salinity is below the threshold for a potential shift to a clear Daphnia dominated state, and (3) more abrupt changes will expectedly occur in low-saline coastal lagoons at increasing salinity during summer in a future warmer climate.  相似文献

Of the three Brachionus species used in aquaculture, Brachionus rubens, B. calycilorus and B. plicatilis, the latter is most widely used in raising marine fish and shrimp larvae due to its tolerance to the marine environment. In freshwater aquaculture the use of B. rubens and B. calycilorus is limited, probably because inert food products are readily available as feed for freshwater larvae.The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is used in large numbers as the first food organism in intensive cultures of marine fish and shrimp larvae. An adequate supply of these rotifers relies on mass cultures. The reproductive rate of rotifers in these cultures depends on food quality and quantity, salinity, temperature and pH of the medium. Removal of waste products from culture tanks leads to higher and more efficient production of rotifers over extended periods of time. Rotifers have to be enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for proper development and survival of marine fish and shrimp larvae.The future use of preserved rotifers and their resting eggs may help to overcome unforeseen failures of live cultures and may lead to more efficient use of these organisms in raising freshwater and marine fish and shrimp larvae.  相似文献

In the Ria Formosa lagoon (S. Portugal), Carcinus maenas larvae have been observed only during the cold part of the year (October–May), when the water temperature stays below 23 °C. Larvae suffer high mortality during day time (about 80% during 6 h). Hence, they will only develop outside the lagoon, as proved by the observation of zoea I stages exclusively. Main recruitment starts in April, i.e. much later than the first larvae appear. Small crabs prefer Zostera noltii patches and colonize other sites when the carapace width exceeds about 5 mm. A reserve of some small crabs is found in Zostera noltii patches nearly all year round. It is postulated that one of the key factors for successful propagation of the species is a match between physiological reactions (here in particular temperature effect on reproductive cycle and larval release), and the ecological conditions for larval survival and recruitment, such as predator impact, food availability or currents.  相似文献

Food uptake ofDreissena polymorpha from two shallow water sites and one site at a 9 m depth in lakes was monitored over the course of 1 1/2 years. Feeding was characterized by the filtration capacity and ingestion capacity (i.e. the unrestricted maximum rates) at ambient temperature. The available food was estimated as seston dry weight, as seston ash free dry weight and as seston volume (sum of the volumes of the particles in the water column). The filtration capacity and ingestion capacity varied strongly during the course of the year by more than 1:10, with maximum values during late spring and early summer. The filtration capacity was correlated with water temperature, the ingestion capacity with temperature and seston concentration. However, at identical water temperatures both capacities were higher in spring than in autumn. At the 9 m site, filtration and ingestion capacity was also significantly influenced by lack of oxygen caused by stratification during summer. In the allometric equations by which both capacities (C) were related to body weightW (C=a W b ), an exponent b of 0.89±0.14 (mean±95% confidence interval) was calculated for the filtration capacity and 1.00±0.18 for the ingestion capacity. Both exponents did not vary significantly during the course of the year. The seasonal trend of the incipient limiting concentration (i.e. the seston concentration at which the intestine is filled to its capacity when the animal filters at maximum rate) was less pronounced. It showed a significantly positive correlation with seston concentration and a negative correlation with temperature. Except during the spring bloom, the incipient limiting concentration was in the range of the seston volume registered at the sites. Gross growth efficiencies were highly variable. An annual average between 5 and 20% was calculated. Growth efficiencies were lower at the shallow water sites with the highest seston concentrations.  相似文献

The cladocerans Ceriodaphnia richardi, Daphnia ambigua, D. gessneri and Moina micrura were used to access food quality of Lake Monte Alegre’s seston. Experiments were carried out in summer and autumn as growth assays with lake seston only (control) and seston supplemented with phosphate, fatty acids or Synechococcus, and Scenedesmus. In summer, high C:P ratios in seston suggested strong phosphorus limitation, however, contrary to the expectations of stoichiometric theory, the addition of phosphate to seston did not improve cladoceran growth. Addition of PUFA increased growth rates and clutch size of D. gessneri, suggesting a possible deficiency in essential fatty acids in summer. Addition of Scenedesmus increased significantly growth rates of the cladocerans D. gessneri and C. cornuta, suggesting energy limitation in summer. In autumn, C:P ratios were lower than in summer, but still above the threshold ratio for Daphnia. At this time, addition of phosphate increased significantly growth rates of Daphnia suggesting strong P limitation, especially in D. gessneri. However, energy limitation was still important in autumn, as suggested by a further increase in growth rates in +Syn and +Sce treatments. Energy limitation was especially strong for Moina micrura, which is a fast-growing species, with high P content. Algal digestion resistance is a plausible hypothesis for energy limitation, since carbon concentrations in both seasons were above incipient limiting levels. These results show that the seston C:P ratio was not a consistent predictor of cladoceran P limitation and that factors other than P and energy limitation seem to be also important, such as PUFA or other biochemical factors. The dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum has previously been shown to produce paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) in response to waterborne cues from the copepod Acartia tonsa. In order to investigate if grazer-induced toxin production is a general or grazer-specific response of A. minutum to calanoid copepods, we exposed two strains of A. minutum to waterborne cues from three other species of calanoid copepods, Acartia clausi, Centropages typicus and Pseudocalanus sp. Both A. minutum strains responded to waterborne cues from Centropages and Acartia with significantly increased cell-specific toxicity. Waterborne cues from Centropages caused the strongest response in the A. minutum cells, with 5 to >20 times higher toxin concentrations compared to controls. In contrast, neither of the A. minutum strains responded with significantly increased toxicity to waterborne cues from Pseudocalanus. The absolute increase in PST content was proportional to the intrinsic toxicity of the different A. minutum strains that were used. The results show that grazer-induced PST production is a grazer-specific response in A. minutum, and its potential ecological importance will thus depend on the composition of the zooplankton community, as well as the intrinsic toxin-producing properties of the A. minutum population.  相似文献

Eurytemora americana and Acartia tonsa are the two most important copepods from the Bahía Blanca estuary plankton. For this study, 30 females were selected from recently preserved samples. Prosome length (PL), width (PW) and height (PH), urosome length (UL) and width (UW) measured in each female and subsequently the following ratios PL/PW, PL/PH, PW/PH and PL/UL were determined. Individual volumes for E. americana and A. tonsa females were estimated following the morphometric method in order to obtain individual biomass values. Regression tests were conducted for both species between individual volume and prosome length or width as independent variables, fitting data to a power model. Regression lines were compared through covariance analysis and single pair comparisons in order to evaluate the temporal behavior of the relationships. PL/UL was the best ratio for separating one species from the other. Average individual volume and std. error estimated for E. americana and A. tonsa were 0.0749 (±0.0097) mm3 and 0.0399 (±0.0049) mm3, respectively. Strong differences between both copepods morphometric variable and rate values were observed. A size and volume decrease was detected associated with higher temperatures and less phytoplankton available for food. According to R 2 values of regression lines prosome width and prosome length were good volume predictors on different dates for E. americana, however, prosome width was the best predictor on the majority of dates for A. tonsa. Differences in slopes and mean variances found between regression lines demonstrated seasonal variability. General regression equations between volume and PL or PW for each species could be derived.  相似文献
