Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a gammaherpesvirus, associated with infectious mononucleosis and various types of malignancy. We focused here on the BDLF4 gene of EBV and identified it as a lytic gene, expressed with early kinetics. Viral late gene expression of the BDLF4 knockout strain was severely restricted; this could be restored by an exogenous supply of BDLF4. These results indicate that BDLF4 is important for the EBV lytic replication cycle, especially in late gene expression. 相似文献

Starfish waste has been shown to be an effective compost material not only in the promotion of plant growth but also in terms
of having insecticidal activity. In the present study, plant growth regulation by chemicals from starfish was examined. The
aqueous fraction from a hot water extract of the starfish Asterias amurensis Lütken showed plant-growth activity, while the aqueous fraction from a methanol extract inhibited growth of Brassica campestris. The lipophilic fraction from the methanol extract also exhibited a plant growth-promoting effect. The active components
from each extract were identified. Asterubine from the hot water extract promoted plant growth. A ceramide from the lipophilic
fraction showed root growth promoting effect, and three glucocerebrosides had promotive effects on the entire plant. Asterosaponins
were identified as the main growth inhibitors in the aqueous fraction of the methanol extract. These active compounds from
starfish waste could be analyzed as potential plant growth regulators in agricultural applications in the future. 相似文献

Summary The origin of skeletal muscle cells in avian iris muscle was investigated by quantitative analysis of heterochromatin profiles at the electron-microscopic level in irides of six types of quail-duck chimeras. Each of the following tissues was transplanted into the head region from quail to duck between stages 9 and 10: cranial neural crest; trunk neural crest; midbrain and adjacent mesoderm; forebrain; forebrain without neural crest; and forebrain without neural crest and mesoderm. The average ratio of heterochromatin profile to nucleus profile in iris skeletal muscle cells was high (quail type) in the dorsal iris, but low (duck type) in the ventral iris of the chimeras resulting from isotopic transplantation of cranial neural crest. Heterotopic transplantation of trunk neural crest to cranial position resulted in failure of development of skeletal muscle cells in the dorsal iris, but not in the appearance of skeletal muscle cells in the ventral iris. The average ratio of heterochromatin profile to nucleus profile in iris skeletal muscle cells was high in the chimeras resulting from transplantation of midbrain region and the chimeras resulting from transplantation of forebrain region, intermediate in the chimeras resulting from transplantation of forebrain region without neural crest, and low in the chimeras resulting from transplantation of forebrain region without neural crest and mesoderm. These results indicate that the skeletal muscle cells in the dorsal iris are of cranial neural crest origin while those in the ventral iris are not, and could possibly arise from cranial mesoderm. 相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of the cloned human salivary and pancreatic α-amylase cDNAs correspond to the continuous mRNA sequences of 1768 and 1566 nucleotides, respectively. These include all of the amino acid coding regions. Salivary cDNA contains 200 bp in the 5′-noncoding region and 32 in the 3′-noncoding region. Pancreatic cDNA contains 3 and 27 bp of 5′- and 3′-noncoding regions, respectively. The nucleotide sequence humology of the two cDNAs is 96% in the coding region, and the predicted amino acid sequences are 94% homologous.Comparison of the sequences of human α-amylase cDNAs with those previously obtained for mouse α-amylase genes (Hagenbuchle et al., 1980; Schibler et al., 1982) showed the possibility of gene conversion between the two genes of human α-amylase. 相似文献

Oligosaccharides obtained from glycoproteins by hydrazinolysis followed by N-acetylation were covalently coupled to an amino-bonded thin-layer plate or to a poly-L-lysine coating on the microtiter plate. Bound oligosaccharides can be directly detected by immunostaining or by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a mouse monoclonal antibody. These methods are simple and require small amounts of oligosaccharides and antibodies. The methods were successfully applied to determine the epitope of F48-60, a monoclonal antibody which reacts with the N-linked sugar chains of nonspecific cross-reacting antigen 2, but not with those of carcinoembryonic antigen. Color discrimination in jumping spiders Hasarius adansoni was examined by heat-avoidance learning in association with colored papers. The arena for the experiment was divided into two halves by a pair of colored papers. The colored papers used in this study were blue, green, yellow, red, white, gray and black. In training sessions, one half of the arena was heated from the bottom by a hot plate, and freely walking spiders were individually trained to avoid the heated half. In subsequent memory tests without heat, they consistently avoided the heat-associated colored papers. We found that jumping spiders could learn blue-green, blue-yellow, blue-red, blue-gray, green-yellow, green-red, green-gray, yellow-red, yellow-gray and red-gray patterns. Moreover, spiders trained with a blue-white pattern, a green-white pattern, a yellow-white pattern or a red-white pattern could discriminate the blue, green, yellow or red from black. It seems that jumping spiders can discriminate the blue, green, yellow and red papers by their hue, although brightness may also be used together with the color cue to discriminate colored papers. 相似文献

Several soluble components, peptidase and amino acids, and carbon isotopic ratio in the water retrieved from flight experiments of Autonomous Biological Systems (ABS) as well as ground control samples are analyzed to interpret the condition, dynamics, material balance of the ABS ecosystems. Organic carbons in flight samples were found to be more abundant compared with the control ones, which suggested the uniform ecosystems in low gravity might easily dissolve more soluble components. A series of naphthoquinones based on the naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione skeleton such as (−)-5-hydroxy-2-(1′-hydoxyethyl)naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione (1) and its positional isomer, (−)-8-hydroxy-2-(1′-hydoxyethyl)naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione (2), which are secondary metabolites found in the inner bark of Tabebuia avellanedae, were stereoselectively synthesized and their biological activities were evaluated in conjunction with those of their corresponding enantiomers. Compound 1 exhibited potent antiproliferative effect against several human tumor cell lines, but its effect against some human normal cell lines was much lower than that of mitomycin. On the other hand, its enantiomer (R)-1 was less active toward the above tumor cell lines than 1. The antiproliferative effect of 2 against all tumor cell lines was significantly reduced. These results indicated the presence of the phenolic hydroxy group at C-5 is of great important for increasing antiproliferative effect. In addition, 1 also showed higher cancer chemopreventive activity than 2, while there were no significant differences between 1 and 2 in antimicrobial activity. Both compounds displayed modest antifungal and antibacterial activity (Gram-positive bacteria), whereas they were inactive against Gram-negative bacteria. 相似文献
