Abstract: We conducted a carcass census of Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) along the Trans-Mongolian railroad in June 2005. We counted 241 gazelles that had died within the previous 12 months. Carcass numbers were greater on the southwestern side in the northern 3 zones, but we found carcasses only on the northeastern side in the southernmost zone. It suggests that impact of the railroad was stronger on one side and that the strength of this impact varied among regions. 相似文献

Twenty monoclonal antibodies were produced against trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica strains HK-9 and HM-1: IMSS. When reactivity to various enteric protozoa was examined by an indirect fluorescence antibody test, 15 of the monoclonal antibodies were strongly reactive with E. histolytica trophozoites. Species-specific antigens recognized by these monoclonal antibodies were located on the plasma membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, and cytoskeletal structures of the trophozoites. Two of the remaining five monoclonals reacted strongly with trophozoites of the E. histolytica -like Laredo strain. The determinant antigen was located in the cytoplasm. The three remaining monoclonal antibodies were found to recognize cross-reactive antigens between E. histolytica and E. histolytica -like Laredo, E. hartmanni, E. coli, Dientamoeba fragilis, Giardia lamblia , and Trichomonas hominis. Food habits and home range use of a troop of Japanese macaque Macaca fuscata Blyth on Kinkazan Island (9.6km2), northern Japan, were studied from the spring of 2000 to the winter of 2002. The home range of this troop covers the area where vegetation is modified by foraging of sika deer Cervus nippon Temminck. The core areas of the home ranges of the macaque troop corresponded closely to the distributions of the staple food plants in every season. For example, leaves of Berberis thunbergii DC. and leaves of Zelkova serrata Makino in spring, berries of Berchemia racemosa Sieb. & Zucc. in summer, nuts of Zelkova serrata and Carpinus spp. in the fall of 2000 and winter of 2001, seeds of Torreya nucifera Sieb. & Zucc. in the fall of 2001, and bark of Zanthoxylum piperitum DC. in winter of 2002. Among the staple food plants, Berberis thunbergii and Zanthoxylum piperitum are more abundant on Kinkazan Island than other macaque habitats in northern Japan because they are spiny and unpalatable to sika deer, hence survive under the heavy foraging by the deer. Further, another staple food plant, Berchemia racemosa, a liana, grows abundantly at the edges of Illicium forests. Illicium anisatur is toxic and is not consumed by sika deer. Monkeys of this troop using the unique vegetation induced by sika deer grazing, fed on several plants which are not consumed by monkeys in other areas, and the home range was heavily affected by the distributions of these plants. 相似文献

Na+,K+-ATPase activity is abundant on the basolateral infoldings of the strial marginal cells and contributes to the maintenance of the characteristic electrolyte composition of the endolymph. However, the stria vascularis of the cochlea is known not to be innervated. In order to clarify its humoral regulation by serotonin, the K+-p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity of strial marginal cells was investigated with a cerium-based method in normal guinea pigs and in guinea pigs treated with reserpine, 5-hydroxytryptamine or reserpine plus 5-hydroxytryptamine. K+-p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity was almost completely depressed 3--20 days after reserpine administration. Ten days after reserpinization, followed by repeated 5-hydroxytryptamine treatment, the enzyme activity was detectable. These results suggest that 5-hydroxytryptamine increases the phosphatase activity. Thus, the function of the stria vascularis in producing cochlear endolymph may be regulated by 5-hydroxytrypt amine. © 1998 Chapman & Hall 相似文献

ABSTRACT. We developed a method to study the DNA synthetic cycles of Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba invadens by flow cytometry (FCM) based on a preparative procedure to reduce both high levels of natural fluorescence and non-specific adsorption of fluorochromes. We modeled G1 , S, and G2 phases as a series of overlapping Gaussian curves. Both E. histolytica and E. invadens displayed G1 , S, and G2 proportions that are consistent with eukaryotic cell populations in exponential or stationary growth phase. Exponential phase E. histolytica populations contained a hypodiploid subset with a mass of about 20% less than the diploid value which we estimate by FCM to be 24 × 10-14 g DNA/cell. Exponential phase E. invadens populations contained a hypodiploid subset with a mass of about 6% less than the diploid value which we estimate by FCM to be 30 × 10-14 g DNA/cell. 相似文献
