During the design and the execution of the Delta project, carried out after the storm flood of 1953 in the SW Netherlands, the importance of the long-term effects of morphological and ecological developments driven by tides and currents, have been underestimated. Due to these processes the height of the dams will have to be increased for centuries to come, because the land behind the levees cannot grow in elevation anymore with the rising of the sea. Maintenance of the civil-engineering structures, and mitigating their unpredictable impacts on ecosystems, involve very high recurrent costs. The chance of flooding is reduced, but the potential damage after a storm flood is enlarged: seawalls and dykes provide a false sense of safety against flooding. Changes in the role of agricultural use in the European context, offer an opportunity to abandon arable fields and to retrocede them to the sea in order to absorb tidal energy and to allow the land to rise concomitant with the sea. A cost-benefit analysis of this approach should assess the direct and indirect economic values, as well as the non-use (intrinsic) values, whereby public engagement in management questions, facilitates decision-making processes. Reversible and resilient economic measures within the limits of the natural processes are preferable. A future, speculative perspective is an urbanised landscape, where people and investments are located in safe places, e.g. on floating, or sea-encircled artificial dwelling-mounds, surrounded by a landscape that is ruled by the forces of nature. New approaches such as developed in the Westerschelde offer flexible solutions to flooding problems, and are worth a broader evaluation. A worldwide platform of experts should be organised to study the future management of estuaries and deltas, and to develop and exchange new ideas and techniques.  相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between protected and endangered riverine species (target species) and hydrodynamics in river-floodplain ecosystems, combining ecological and policy-legal aspects of biodiversity conservation in river management. The importance of different hydrodynamic conditions along a lateral gradient was quantified for various taxonomic groups. Our results show that (i) target species require ecotopes along the entire hydrodynamic gradient; (ii) different parts of the hydrodynamic gradient are important to different species, belonging to different taxonomic groups; (iii) in particular low-dynamic parts are important for many species and (iv) species differ in their specificity for hydrodynamic conditions. Many species of higher plants, fish and butterflies have a narrow range for hydrodynamics and many species of birds and mammals use ecotopes along the entire gradient. Even when focussing only on target species, the entire natural hydrodynamic gradient is important. This means that the riverine species assemblage as a whole can benefit from measures focussing on target species only. River reconstruction and management should aim at re-establishing the entire hydrodynamic gradient, increasing the spatial heterogeneity of hydrodynamic conditions.  相似文献

Plantar pressure measurement provides important information about the structure and function of the foot and is a helpful tool to evaluate patients with foot complaints. In general, average and maximum plantar pressure of 6–11 areas under the foot are used to compare groups of subjects. However, masking the foot means a loss of important information about the plantar pressure distribution pattern. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and test a simple method that normalizes the plantar pressure pattern for foot size, foot progression angle, and total plantar pressure. Moreover, scaling the plantar pressure to a standard foot opens the door for more sophisticated analysis techniques such as pattern recognition and machine learning.Twelve subjects walked at preferred and half of the preferred walking speed over a pressure plate. To test the method, subjects walked in a straight line and in an approaching angle of approximately 40°. To calculate the normalized foot, the plantar pressure pattern was rotated over the foot progression angle and normalized for foot size.After normalization, the mean shortest distance between the contour lines of straight walking and walking at an angle had a mean of 0.22 cm (SD: 0.06 cm) for the forefoot and 0.14 cm (SD: 0.06 cm) for the heel. In addition, the contour lines of normalized feet for the various subjects were almost identical.The proposed method appeared to be successful in aligning plantar pressure of various feet without losing information.  相似文献

The major cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum, and six other related cultivated species, are hypothesized to have arisen from a group of weedy relatives indigenous to the central Andes of central Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. A major problem hindering investigations of the origins of the cultivated species has been a continuing debate over the species boundaries of their putative progenitors. This study investigated the morphological phenetic species boundaries of these putative progenitors and five cultivated taxa, here collectively referred to as the Solanum brevicaule complex. Two hundred fifteen accessions of 30 taxa in the S. brevicaule complex and 42 accessions of six taxa outside of the complex were assessed for 53 morphological traits in replicate plots in a common garden, resulting in a total of over 81;t3000 data points. Phenetic analyses of these data are unable to support 30 taxa, suggesting instead a single variable complex at best only weakly divided into three widely intergrading sets of populations: (1) Peruvian and geographically adjacent Bolivian accessions (including wild species and all the cultigens), (2) Bolivian and Argentinian accessions and S. verrucosum from Mexico (including only wild species), and (3) the Bolivian and Argentinian wild species S. oplocense. These and other data suggest that Hawkes's 1990 treatment (The Potato: Evolution, Biodiversity, and Genetic Resources, Smithsonian Institute Press, Washington, DC.) of 232 morphological species is an overestimate for sect. The human dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) gene family comprises one functional gene and at least four intronless processed pseudogenes. The functional DHFR gene is on chromosome 5, and DHFRP4 is on chromosome 3. Using in situ hybridization, we have now localized the functional DHFR gene to the region q11.1-q13.3 on chromosome 5. By genomic DNA analysis of a panel of human X rodent somatic-cell hybrids, we determined the chromosomal assignment of the DHFRP1 pseudogene to chromosome 18 and that of the DHFRP2 pseudogene to chromosome 6. The DHFRP1 pseudogene exhibits a novel form of polymorphism in humans in that it is present in the DNA of some individuals and absent in that of others. We investigated the racial distribution of this pseudogene in five racial groups. The allelic frequency as defined by analysis of 180 chromosomes was found to be 94% in Mediterraneans, 77% in Asian Indians, 67% in Chinese, 57% in Southeast Asians, and 32% in American blacks. These data suggest that the transposition of this "perfect" pseudogene occurred prior to the inception of the human racial groups.  相似文献

Of the three Brachionus species used in aquaculture, Brachionus rubens, B. calycilorus and B. plicatilis, the latter is most widely used in raising marine fish and shrimp larvae due to its tolerance to the marine environment. In freshwater aquaculture the use of B. rubens and B. calycilorus is limited, probably because inert food products are readily available as feed for freshwater larvae.The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is used in large numbers as the first food organism in intensive cultures of marine fish and shrimp larvae. An adequate supply of these rotifers relies on mass cultures. The reproductive rate of rotifers in these cultures depends on food quality and quantity, salinity, temperature and pH of the medium. Removal of waste products from culture tanks leads to higher and more efficient production of rotifers over extended periods of time. Rotifers have to be enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for proper development and survival of marine fish and shrimp larvae.The future use of preserved rotifers and their resting eggs may help to overcome unforeseen failures of live cultures and may lead to more efficient use of these organisms in raising freshwater and marine fish and shrimp larvae.  相似文献
