We conducted a cytogenetic study of four hyline frog species (Dendropsophus elegans, D. microps, D. minutus and D. werneri) from southern Brazil. All species had 2n = 30 chromosomes, with interspecific and intraspecific variation in the numbers of metacentric, submetacentric, subtelocentric and telocentric chromosomes. C-banding and fluorochrome staining revealed conservative GC-rich heterochromatin localized in the pericentromeric regions of all species. The location of the nucleolus organizer regions, as confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization, differed between species. Telomeric probes detected sites that were restricted to the terminal regions of all chromosomes and no interstitial or centromeric signals were observed. Our study corroborates the generic synapomorphy of 2n = 30 chromosomes for Dendropsophus and adds data that may become useful for future taxonomic revisions and a broader understanding of chromosomal evolution among hylids.  相似文献

Experiments with crucians (Carassius carassius L.) and goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) have shown that a consolidated memory trace of a simple visual pattern became disturbed by later seeing series of similar patterns (unrewarded), that is to say by latent learning. In a test in which the experimental group (es) had to choose between the originally learnt and the similar pattern, it did not prefer the former, whereas the control group (cs), which had only seen white walls of the aquarium, still preferred the originally learnt pattern. The same happened when es learnt a similar pattern by reward after the memory of the original pattern had been consolidated. In another set of experiments the negative influence of post-exposure could be demonstrated in facilitation of later learning the postexposed pattern as positive versus the originally learnt pattern, now negative. When es had seen a dissimilar wall-paper pattern then the memory of the primarily learnt pattern was not disturbed. A tentative explanation is based on the notion that two similar engrams have part of the neuronal network in common.  相似文献

Section Choretropsis genus Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) is formed by plants whose branches are modified into phylloclades. Despite the suitable characteristics of phylloclades within the Phyllanthus genus, the systematics of these species are poorly understood. Morphological data are presented here to allow future revision of this taxonomic group. The section is represented by nine species distributed in South America, eight of them endemic to Brazil. Our taxonomic studies distinguish the species and propose the synonymization of nine varieties of P. klotzschianus and two varieties of P. flagelliformis based on vegetative and reproductive characters. For most ecosystems, net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) varies within and among years in response to environmental change. We analyzed measurements of CO2 exchange from eight native rangeland ecosystems in the western United States (58 site‐years of data) in order to determine the contributions of photosynthetic and respiratory (physiological) components of CO2 exchange to environmentally caused variation in NEE. Rangelands included Great Plains grasslands, desert shrubland, desert grasslands, and sagebrush steppe. We predicted that (1) week‐to‐week change in NEE and among‐year variation in the response of NEE to temperature, net radiation, and other environmental drivers would be better explained by change in maximum rates of ecosystem photosynthesis (Amax) than by change in apparent light‐use efficiency (α) or ecosystem respiration at 10 °C (R10) and (2) among‐year variation in the responses of NEE, Amax, and α to environmental drivers would be explained by changes in leaf area index (LAI). As predicted, NEE was better correlated with Amax than α or R10 for six of the eight rangelands. Week‐to‐week variation in NEE and physiological parameters correlated mainly with time‐lagged indices of precipitation and water‐related environmental variables, like potential evapotranspiration, for desert sites and with net radiation and temperature for Great Plains grasslands. For most rangelands, the response of NEE to a given change in temperature, net radiation, or evaporative demand differed among years because the response of photosynthetic parameters (Amax, α) to environmental drivers differed among years. Differences in photosynthetic responses were not explained by variation in LAI alone. A better understanding of controls on canopy photosynthesis will be required to predict variation in NEE of rangeland ecosystems.  相似文献

The phylloclade anatomy of nine Brazilian species of the genus Phyllanthus section Choretropsis was studied, and its systematic significance was analysed. The arrangement of epidermal cells varied according to the species, with the guard cells of the stomatal apparatus distributed randomly or with the longitudinal axis parallel to the branch. In both branch types, the stomata were distributed on the phylloclade surface, except in P. gladiatus which showed hypostomatic branches. In most of the species, phylloclades developed a vascular system surrounded by clusters of fibres and cortical parenchyma, which could differentiate into palisade‐like tissue and ground tissue like a true leaf blade. The distribution of the vascular system followed the cylindrical or flattened diameter shape of the branch. In subsection Choretropsis, the cylindrical branches of P. choretroides, contrary to other species, developed a second ring formed by clusters of fibres surrounded by large parenchymal cells. In subsection Applanata, the palisade‐like cells of P. flagelliformis phylloclades acquired an isodiametric shape. The highest level of specialization was observed in P. gladiatus, which developed phylloclades with a dorsiventral structure, a main vein, and small sets of lateral vascular bundles like a typical leaf blade. The tissue arrangement of different species showed a gradual pattern, which was correlated with the different branch morphology and plant architecture. Despite the transitional pattern, it was suggested that some of the phylloclades had an independent origin and convergent evolution in the Choretropsis section. The anatomy of different branch types was shown to be useful, either in isolation or in association with other morphological characters, to delimit the species and to further understand their relationships and phylogeny. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 157 , 91–102.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) section Choretropsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The pollen grain morphology of the eight South American species of the genus Phyllanthus , subgenus Phyllanthus , section Choretropsis , endemic to Brazil, was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The high homogeneity in pollen shape, as well as aperture number and configuration, allowed the definition of a basic pollen type for this section, viz. prolate spheroidal or subprolate, zonocolporate with 4–5 invaginated colpi, sexine reticulate. Two subtypes have been observed, based on pollen grain apertures and exine sculpture. The first subtype is characterized by straight and narrow colpi provided with costae, lalongate endoapertures and a reticulum of rectilineous muri as in P. choretroides and P. spartioides . The second subtype has wider colpi without costae, circular endoapertures and a reticulum with curvilineous muri as in P. flagelliformis , P. goianensis and P. scoparius , or curvilineous-rectilineous muri as in P. angustissimus , P. gladiatus and P. klotzschianus . It was demonstrated that the pollen shape and the number of colpi varied within and between some of the species. The results suggest that pollen grain morphology, in association with plant architecture and the presence of phylloclades, constitute additional evidence to delimit the species of the section Choretropsis and to further understand their evolutionary origin within the genus Phyllanthus.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 243–250.  相似文献

Adaptation of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to contrasting upland and lowland habitats has been extensively studied with respect to behaviour, morphology and life history traits. Yet population history has not been studied at the whole‐genome level. Although single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most abundant form of variation in many genomes and consequently very informative for a genome‐wide picture of standing natural variation in populations, genome‐wide SNP data are rarely available for wild vertebrates. Here we use genetically mapped SNP markers to comprehensively survey genetic variation within and among naturally occurring guppy populations from a wide geographic range in Trinidad and Venezuela. Results from three different clustering methods, Neighbor‐net, principal component analysis (PCA) and Bayesian analysis show that the population substructure agrees with geographic separation and largely with previously hypothesized patterns of historical colonization. Within major drainages (Caroni, Oropouche and Northern), populations are genetically similar, but those in different geographic regions are highly divergent from one another, with some indications of ancient shared polymorphisms. Clear genomic signatures of a previous introduction experiment were seen, and we detected additional potential admixture events. Headwater populations were significantly less heterozygous than downstream populations. Pairwise FST values revealed marked differences in allele frequencies among populations from different regions, and also among populations within the same region. FST outlier methods indicated some regions of the genome as being under directional selection. Overall, this study demonstrates the power of a genome‐wide SNP data set to inform for studies on natural variation, adaptation and evolution of wild populations  相似文献

In this study, a matric-potential control system was used todetermine the effect of matric-priming duration and primingwater potential on the germination response of Bouteloua curtipendula(Michx.) Torr., Cenchrus ciliaris L., Eragrostis lehmannianaNees, and Panicum coloratum L. Seeds were primed at water potentialsof –1·5 to –7·7 MPa for up to 14 d.Optimum germination generally occurred in treatments primedat high water potential for the shortest period. Germinationof seeds primed at lower water potential and for longer periodsexhibited a negative germination response relative to the control.Seeds were not redried after the priming treatment.
