1. Since zebra mussel invaded Lake Constance in the 1960s the number of wintering waterbirds increased fourfold. We studied the impact of predation by waterbirds (tufted duck Aythya fuligula, pochard Aythya ferina and coot Fulica atra) on the population of Dreissena polymorpha in winter 2001/2002. These three species, with monthly peak numbers of approximately 230 000 individuals, currently comprise up to 80% of the waterbird population wintering at Lake Constance. 2. Four different study sites and four depths, that represent typical and characteristic habitats of mussels in Upper Lake Constance, were chosen. 3. Zebra mussels were sampled before, during and after predation by waterbirds. Their biomass in shallow areas decreased by >90%; the biomass reduction in deeper areas was highly variable and dependent on the substratum. With one exception, no changes could be detected at the greatest depth (11 m). 4. Concurrent exclosure studies revealed that the decrease in zebra mussels was caused by waterbird predation. A GIS‐based approximation revealed that in an area of 1 km2 a total of approximately 750 t mussel fresh mass was removed by birds, which is equivalent to 1390 g mussels per bird per day. 5. Wintering waterbirds have a strong structural impact on the littoral community of Lake Constance and could be the key predator of zebra mussels.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The relationship between population growth rates and the concentrations of several algal species was determined in laboratory experiments with the rotifers Brachionus rubens and B. calyciflorus .
2. The effects of food quantity were well described by a modified Monod model with a threshold for zero population growth. The model parameters depended on particle size and nutritional quality of the food algae. Differences between the rotifer species were significant and reflected their varying food-size preferences.
3. For each rotifer species, thresholds were lowest for algae in the most readily ingested size range. The lowest thresholds were 0.07–0.09 mgC 1−1 with algae of about 5 μm equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) for B. rubens , and 0.19 mgC 1−1 with algae of about 10 μm ESD for B. calyciflorus .
4. Maximal growth rates ( r max) were slightly below 0.8 day−1 for both rotifers with most algal species. The highest r max values for both rotifers were observed when Cyclotella meneghiniana was provided as food. With this alga, B. calyciflorus had a significantly higher rmax (1.02 day−1) than B. rubens (0.838 day−1).
5. From a comparison of the relationship between growth rates and ingestion rates, Chlamydomonas reinhardii appeared to be of low nutritional quality for B. rubens .
6. Egg ratios were related to growth rate and were not influenced by the algal food used. Egg development times and average mortality rates were estimated from the relationship between egg ratio and growth rate. B. calyciflorus appeared to have a high average mortality rate (0.383 day−1) compared to B. rubens (0.083 day−1).  相似文献

Analyses of the effects of extreme climate periods have been used as a tool to predict ecosystem functioning and processes in a warmer world. The winter half‐year 2006/2007 (w06/07) has been extremely warm and was estimated to be a half‐a‐millennium event in central Europe. Here we analyse the consequences of w06/07 for the temperatures, mixing dynamics, phenologies and population developments of algae and daphnids (thereafter w06/07 limnology) in a deep central European lake and investigate to what extent analysis of w06/07 limnology can really be used as a predictive tool regarding future warming. Different approaches were used to put the observations during w06/07 into context: (1) a comparison of w06/07 limnology with long‐term data, (2) a comparison of w06/07 limnology with that of the preceding year, and (3) modelling of temperature and mixing dynamics using numerical experiments. These analyses revealed that w06/07 limnology in Lake Constance was indeed very special as the lake did not mix below 60 m depth throughout winter. Because of this, anomalies of variables associated strongly with mixing behaviour, e.g., Schmidt stability and a measure for phosphorus upward mixing during winter exceeded several standard deviations the long‐term mean of these variables. However, our modelling results suggest that this extreme hydrodynamical behaviour was only partially due to w06/07 meteorology per se, but depended also strongly on the large difference in air temperature to the previous cold winter which resulted in complete mixing and considerable cooling of the water column. Furthermore, modelling results demonstrated that with respect to absolute water temperatures, the model ‘w06/07’ most likely underestimates the increase in water temperature in a warmer world as one warm winter is not sufficient to rise water temperatures in a deep lake up to those expected under a future climate.  相似文献

1. The zebra mussel ( Dreissena polymorpha ) is one of the most successful invasive species; it has colonised many aquatic systems in Europe and North America with strong impacts on various ecosystem processes. The effect of D. polymorpha filtration on pelagic seston concentrations has been quantified in several studies, but the magnitude and stoichiometry of the transfer of sestonic biomass into benthic detritus by D. polymorpha and the accompanying enrichment of the benthic habitat is still under-investigated.
2. We studied biodeposition by zebra mussels in two series of laboratory experiments with the food algae Cryptomonas erosa and Scenedesmus obliquus . We also measured the year-round biodeposition rate under natural conditions in the oligotrophic Lake Constance.
3. In all experiments, zebra mussel biodeposition was linearly related to seston concentration. In the field, the relationship changed with a seasonal shift in algal composition and lower biodeposition rates during the spring algal bloom.
4. For both algal species in laboratory experiments, biodeposited material was depleted in phosphorous at an algal concentration ≤0.6 mg ash-free dry mass L−1, but not at higher concentrations. This effect was not observed in the field, probably because of high variation in C : N : P stoichiometry.
5. By mediating the transfer of pelagic resources into the benthos zebra mussels provide a sufficient amount of detritus for benthic invertebrates, especially during summer. Thus, material biodeposited by the mussels might increase benthic secondary production from pelagic resources, and zebra mussels are important mediators of this flux of organic matter from the pelagic zone into the benthos.  相似文献

1. A simulation study of the feedback of phytoplankton biomass on temperature stratification in the large, monomictic Lake Constance was undertaken. Phytoplankton biomass affects the light extinction coefficient (LEC) of the water and, in turn, the vertical distribution of short‐wave radiation, which shapes the temperature stratification in the lake. 2. A sensitivity study of the variation in LEC using the hydrodynamic model DYRESM showed that a high LEC is associated with stronger stratification, shallower thermoclines, higher surface temperatures and reduced heat content during the heating phase of the lake. During the cooling phase, a shallower thermocline at high LEC leads to a faster decrease in water temperature so that during autumn, a high LEC is associated with lower surface temperatures. Thermal structure was particularly sensitive to changes in LEC when its value was below 0.5 m?1. 3. When LEC is simulated dynamically with the coupled hydrodynamic–ecological model DYRESM‐CAEDYM, its value is a function of phytoplankton dynamics that change vertically and temporally. Comparing simulations with and without dynamic LEC (i.e. with and without phytoplankton dynamics) produced a complex picture: during the vegetation period, we often found a warmer surface layer and colder water beneath in the simulations with dynamic LEC, as expected from the higher LEC when phytoplankton is abundant. However, since phytoplankton biomass (as LEC) fluctuates and because of occasional cooling phases, the patterns were comparatively weak and not consistent over the whole growing season. 4. The most obvious patterns emerged by comparing simulations of oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. In the eutrophic state, with its higher LEC, stratification was stronger and characterized by higher surface water temperatures, a shallower thermocline and colder water temperatures between 5 and 10 m depth. 5. Statistical analysis of long‐term data of water temperatures in Lake Constance, corrected for external forcing by air temperature, revealed a significant tendency towards warmer temperatures at 7.5 and 10 m depths with decreasing LECs over the course of reoligotrophication. Enzyme electrophoresis was used to study population geneticsand molecular differentiation of European Anodontmae. The existenceof two genera (Anodonta Lamarck 1799 and Pseudanodonta Bour-guignat1876) is supported by the number of diagnostic loa (4) and Net'sD > 0.463 in all cases. In western and central Europe thereare two species of Anodonta, A. anatina (Linnaeus 1758) andA cygnea (Linnaeus 1758) while two other taxa of still uncertainrank were identified in the Mediterranean area. An estimatedmedium level of gene flow and pronounced genetic differentiationbetween-the taxa support this view. 1. Benthic communities inhabiting river–lake interfaces are confronted with temporal variation in the import of river‐borne material to the associated littoral zone. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the exposure to river‐borne benthic particulate matter as a force shaping the meiofauna of the river–lake interface. 2. In a 2 × 2 factorial design, combinations of strongly and weakly river‐influenced communities (near or far from the river mouth) with and without river‐borne benthic particulate matter enrichment were studied in laboratory microcosms to assess the response of the heterotrophic meiobenthos to river‐borne matter. 3. Nematodes dominated both habitat types and were the only meiofaunal taxon that responded to the enrichment. 4. A strong interactive effect between experimental enrichment and location of site was observed. Whereas nematodes from the littoral habitat close to the river mouth responded to the enrichment only marginally, nematodes from the remote site were strongly affected in the presence of river‐borne particulate matter. 5. In the non‐enriched samples of the remote site, the number of nematodes increased greatly over time. Among nematode feeding types, deposit feeders dominated over chewers at the beginning of the experiment but both types were equally abundant at the end. In the presence of river‐borne matter the increase of chewers ceased and a shift in feeding type composition did not occur. 6. It was shown that for river–lake interface meiofaunal assemblages in relative proximity, the same taxon might respond differently if exposed to an external pressure, e.g. river‐borne components. 1. Accumulation of organic material by the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha is assumed to be the source of a biodeposition‐based food web. However, only little is known about the importance of the biodeposited material as a food source and its contribution to increased abundances of macroinvertebrates in the presence of D. polymorpha. 2. Feeding, assimilation and growth of the amphipods Gammarus roeselii and Dikerogammarus villosus on food sources directly and indirectly associated with D. polymorpha (biodeposited material and chironomids) and on conditioned alder leaves were measured. The stoichiometry of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus of the diets was measured as an important determining factor of food quality. 3. Chironomids had the highest nitrogen and phosphorus contents, alder leaves were depleted in nitrogen and phosphorus, and the stoichiometry of biodeposited material was intermediate. 4. Both amphipod species had highest feeding rates and assimilation efficiencies on chironomids. Gammarus roeselii fed more on biodeposited material than on alder leaves, but assimilation efficiencies were similar; D. villosus also had similar feeding rates and assimilation efficiencies on the two diets. 5. Both amphipod species had highest growth rates on chironomids and lowest growth rates on alder leaves. Both grew at intermediate rates on biodeposited material of D. polymorpha. The growth rates of the amphipod species were related to food stoichiometry. Overall, the invasive D. villosus grew faster than the indigenous G. roeselii. 6. Food resources directly and indirectly associated with D. polymorpha are potential diets for amphipods, providing further evidence for a D. polymorpha biodeposition‐based food web.  相似文献
