Respiratory allergies triggered by pollen allergens represent a significant health concern to the Irish public. Up to now, Ireland has largely refrained from participating in long-term aerobiological studies. Recently, pollen monitoring has commenced in several sampling locations around Ireland. The first results of the pollen monitoring campaigns for Dublin (urban) and Carlow (rural) concerning the period 2017–2019 and 2018–2019, respectively, are presented herein. Additional unpublished pollen data from 1978–1980 and, 2010–2011 were also incorporated in creating the first pollen calendar for Dublin. During the monitoring period over 60 pollen types were identified with an average Annual Pollen Integral (APIn) of 32,217 Pollen × day/m3 for Dublin and 78,411 Pollen × day/m3 for Carlow. The most prevalent pollen types in Dublin were: Poaceae (32%), Urticaceae (29%), Cupressaceae/Taxaceae (11%), Betula (10%), Quercus (4%), Pinus (3%), Fraxinus (2%), Alnus (2%) and Platanus (1%). The predominant pollen types in Carlow were identified as Poaceae (70%), Urticaceae (12%), Betula (10%), Quercus (2%), Fraxinus (1%) and Pinus (1%). These prevalent pollen types increased in annual pollen concentration in both locations from 2018 to 2019 except for Fraxinus. Although higher pollen concentrations were observed for the Carlow (rural) site a greater variety of pollen types were identified for the Dublin (urban) site. The general annual trend in the pollen season began with the release of tree pollen in early spring, followed by the release of grass and herbaceous pollen which dominated the summer months with the annual pollen season coming to an end in October. This behaviour was illustrated for 21 different pollen types in the Dublin pollen calendar. The correlation between ambient pollen concentration and meteorological parameters was also examined and differed greatly depending on the location and study year. A striking feature was a substantial fraction of the recorded pollen sampled in Dublin did not correlate with the prevailing wind directions. However, using non-parametric wind regression, specific source regions could be determined such as Alnus originating from the Southeast, Betula originating from the East and Poaceae originating from the Southwest.
Brain and heart development is very plastic in teleost fishes, and receptive to changes in social and environmental conditions.
Domestication in salmonids has been reported to result in pronounced changes in both heart and brain morphology. In particular,
a high prevalence of heart deformities has been reported in farmed salmonids, which has been linked to increased stress responsiveness
that can impair survival of both farmed and escaped fish. Here we report for the first time that significant changes in heart
and brain morphology occur following domestication of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), an emerging aquaculture species. Juvenile farmed cod developed significantly larger hearts and smaller brains, by weight,
compared to their wild conspecifics. These differences occurred within the first captive generation, suggesting that they
were driven largely by the strong contrast in environmental and social conditions experienced within their respective rearing
environments. Changes in brain and heart morphology, as a consequence of domestication could affect the well-being and survival
of Atlantic cod raised under intensive aquaculture conditions. 相似文献
Wealth and status covary with lifetime reproductive success in preindustrial human populations. Local ecology is likely to modify this association, but details of this presumed relationship are not yet known. We sought to determine whether local ecology modifies the relationship between status and fitness (number of grandchildren). Our approach to the problem was to measure variation in fitness relative to status (landless or with land) and to local ecology (inland versus coastal communities). We also analyzed life history traits that might explain observed variations in fitness. Our results confirm previous findings that both status (landless=9.9 vs. with land=16.5) and ecology (inland=12.3 vs. coast=14.1) affect the number of grandchildren produced by a female in pre-industrial society. We also found that the differences in number of children between the status groups were less pronounced on the coast (landless=12.0 vs. with land=16.1) than inland (landless=7.8 vs. with land=16.8). Our findings are novel because they suggest that the fitness consequences of human status may depend on details of local ecology. We discuss four different mechanisms that could account for these fitness differences: (1) differential reproductive rate of mothers, (2) differential marriage rate of children (3) differential survival rate of children, and (4) different social practices (breastfeeding, inheritance of property and diet). 相似文献
Abstract In order to evaluate the potential of naturally occurring filamentous fungi having potential as biocontrol agents effective against grey mould and post-harvest fruit rot caused by Botrytis cinerea on tomato, fungal saprophytes were isolated. They were obtained from leaves, fruits and flowers belonging to different species of cultivated and spontaneous Solanaceous plants collected at the horticultural area of La Plata, Argentina. Of 300 isolates screened for inhibition of B. cinerea using the dual culture technique on agar plate, 12 strains inhibited strongly mycelial growth of the pathogen. Among the antagonists one isolate of Epicoccun nigrum (126), four of Trichoderma harzianum (110, 118, 248 and 252) and four isolates of Fusarium spp. decreased the spore germination of B. cinerea between 30 and 70%. These isolates were probed on tomato fruits to evaluate their biocontrol activity against post-harvest grey mould. In growth chamber tests, E. nigrum (27), F. equiseti (22, 105) and T. harzianum (118, 252) reduced the diameter of fruit lesions by 50 – 90% and were selected for further biocontrol assays of tomato plants in the greenhouse. Although there were not significant differences between the treatments and the control, F. equiseti (105), E. nigrum (27) and T. harzianum (118) reduced by 20, 22 and 22 respectively the disease on whole plants. The targeted application of isolates of E. nigrum, T. harzianum and F. equiseti provides a promising alternative to the use of fungicide spray to control B. cinerea on tomatoes. 相似文献
Non-indigenous species cause great damage worldwide. Non-indigenous insects are known as harmful in many regions, but few
comprehensive works have investigated non-indigenous insects as a group. We compiled a comprehensive database of established
non-indigenous (ENI) insects in Israel and adjacent regions to investigate how they arrived, their biological characteristics,
and the attributes of areas they invade. Of 218 species of ENI insects in this region, 124 are widespread. Most species came
as stowaways, but 38 were brought intentionally for biological control. Most ENI insects in this region are in the Coleoptera,
Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Homoptera. Species from various orders differ in their tendency to be localized or
widespread, and in biogeographic origins. The distribution of species among orders differs between native and ENI insects.
The Coastal Plain houses the most ENI insect species and the Negev and Judean deserts the fewest. Most ENI insects spread
from the Coastal Plain to other regions. Absence of roads, settlements and presence of nature reserves are negatively correlated
with occurrence of ENI species. Seventy-nine species are categorized as pests that damage produce, merchandise, forestry,
etc. Despite a general dearth of knowledge on impacts of ENI insects on natural systems, 42 species are known to feed on native
plants, some of conservation concern. Biological control agents are usually more limited in their distribution than other
ENI insects. Further research, legislation, and enforcement are required to minimize effects of these species on agriculture
and natural habitats. 相似文献
The combined effects of copper and zinc ions on the growth of three marine diatoms and one dinoflagellate in culture have been studied. The two metals were found to act synergistically to all algae except Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin. With this species an antagonistic effect was observed. Addition of zinc ions reduced the inhibition of growth caused by the more toxic copper ions. Zinc toxicity to this alga increased at low concentration of magnesium, indicating a common route for divalent metal ions in general. 相似文献
A retrospective study was carried out to assess the feasibility of computer-assisted prognostication by discriminant analysis and the Bayesian classification procedure based on clinical information collected on patients with acute myocardial infarction. The overall accuracy was 94.2% in predicting hospital death but the prediction of late death after discharge was less accurate. It was found that not all of the 44 variables used for analysis were necessary to reach the same level of predictive accuracy--16 to 20 variables would result in almost the identical prediction. The Bayesian classification procedure was applied to estimate probabilities of individual patients belonging to the different prognostic categories. 相似文献
The bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii produces a family of seven secreted and calcium-dependent mannuronan C-5 epimerases (AlgE1–7). These epimerases are responsible for the epimerization of β-d-mannuronic acid (M) to α-l-guluronic acid (G) in alginate polymers. The epimerases display a modular structure composed of one or two catalytic A-modules and from one to seven R-modules having an activating effect on the A-module. In this study, we have determined the NMR structure of the three individual R-modules from AlgE6 (AR1R2R3) and the overall structure of both AlgE4 (AR) and AlgE6 using small angle x-ray scattering. Furthermore, the alginate binding ability of the R-modules of AlgE4 and AlgE6 has been studied with NMR and isothermal titration calorimetry. The AlgE6 R-modules fold into an elongated parallel β-roll with a shallow, positively charged groove across the module. Small angle x-ray scattering analyses of AlgE4 and AlgE6 show an overall elongated shape with some degree of flexibility between the modules for both enzymes. Titration of the R-modules with defined alginate oligomers shows strong interaction between AlgE4R and both oligo-M and MG, whereas no interaction was detected between these oligomers and the individual R-modules from AlgE6. A combination of all three R-modules from AlgE6 shows weak interaction with long M-oligomers. Exchanging the R-modules between AlgE4 and AlgE6 resulted in a novel epimerase called AlgE64 with increased G-block forming ability compared with AlgE6. 相似文献
