Semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes are generally assumed to enhance the biological control of insect pests based on native beneficial insects, by providing alternative prey and hosts, resources and refuges for overwintering. We hypothesized that natural enemies of winter wheat aphids should arrive sooner in fields near semi-natural habitats. We compared aphid, hoverfly (larvae and eggs) and parasitized aphid (mummies) abundances in 54 winter wheat fields located in southern France from 2003 to 2007. Six surveys were recorded each spring and were split into the early period (defined as the period before the peak of aphid growth) and the late period (after the peak). The wheat fields differed by their surrounding landscape composition measured as the proportion of semi-natural habitats (woods, hedges and grasslands), at three different spatial scales: 200 m, 500 m, and 1200 m. Despite great variability in abundance data between years, the abundance of hoverflies appeared more sensitive to landscape composition than aphid abundance was. Early abundance for both aphids and hoverflies was positively related to wood cover, but not late abundance in spring. The abundance of hoverflies was positively related to hedge and grassland cover at all spatial scales and both periods considered. Aphid parasitism was higher near hedges at the small spatial scale late in the spring. Our results confirmed that higher proportions of semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes enhance the biological control of pests, but this effect depends on the spatial scale, the time period in the spring and the natural enemies considered. 相似文献

The balance between energetic acquisition and expenditure depends on the amount of energy allocated to biological functions such as thermoregulation, growth, reproduction and behavior. Ambient temperature has a profound effect on this balance, with species inhabiting colder climates often needing to invest more energy in thermoregulation to maintain body temperature. This leads to local behavioral and physiological adaptations that increase energetic efficiency. In this study, we investigated the role of activity, behavior and thermogenic capacity in the ability of the greater white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula, to cope with seasonal changes. Individuals were captured in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, a Mediterranean region, and separated into three experimental groups: a control group, acclimated to a 12L:12D photoperiod and temperature of 18–20 °C; a winter group, acclimatized to natural winter fluctuations of light and temperature; and a summer group, acclimatized to natural summer fluctuations of light and temperature. No differences were found in resting metabolic rate and nonshivering thermogenesis between the three groups. However, winter shrews significantly reduced their activity, particularly at night, compared to the control and summer groups. Differences in torpor use were also found between groups, with winter shrews entering torpor more frequently and during shorter periods of time than summer and control shrews. Our results indicate C. russula from Sintra relies on the flexibility of energy saving mechanisms, namely daily activity level and torpor use, to cope with seasonal changes in a Mediterranean climate, rather than mechanisms involving body heat production. 相似文献

The continuous, subcutaneous infusion of native GnRH into seasonally anovulatory mares stimulates the synthesis and secretion of LH without pituitary refractoriness, offering opportunities to markedly accelerate the timing of ovulation within the operational breeding season. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that ovarian cycles induced in winter anovulatory mares using continuous administration of native GnRH for 28 days, beginning in either early February or early March (North America) would not revert to an anovulatory state after treatment withdrawal. Anovulatory mares received sham pumps (control) or native GnRH (100 μg/h) for 28 days beginning from February 2 or 3 (GnRH-Feb) or March 2 or 3 (GnRH-Mar). Mean concentrations of LH were five- to seven-fold greater during February in the GnRH-Feb group compared with control and GnRH-Mar groups through February and ending on March 2 or 3. However, concentrations of LH returned to the winter baseline within 3 to 11 days after pump removal and all GnRH-Feb mares failed to remain cyclic after treatment withdrawal. Correspondingly, during March, concentrations of LH in the GnRH-Mar group were greater (P < 0.001) than in the control and GnRH-Feb groups during the 28-day treatment period. Follicular growth and frequency of ovulation (6/10 GnRH-Feb; 9/10 GnRH-Mar, 1/11 controls, respectively) were greater (P < 0.01) in GnRH-treated mares. Ovulatory cycles continued in five of nine GnRH-Mar mares that ovulated, with interovulatory intervals of 15 to 24 days; whereas, three of nine mares had extended (33–42 days) interovulatory intervals and one of nine mares had a persistent CL after cessation of treatment. In summary, continuous administration of native GnRH for 28 days, beginning in early February or March, elevated circulating LH adequately to stimulate follicular growth and ovulation up to 60 days earlier than in untreated controls. However, if continuous, subcutaneous infusion of GnRH is selected as the only pharmacologic or managerial intervention, and mares are not pregnant, treatment must be continued at least until the end of March. This will improve the likelihood of a normal interovulatory interval after treatment withdrawal. 相似文献

Since Durkheim and Morselli found a spring peak in suicides in the late 19th century, researchers have presented possible explanations, including daylight variation, for this seasonal pattern. Our identification strategy exploits the idiosyncratic variation in daylight within Norwegian regions, arising from the country’s substantial latitudinal range. We use full population data for a period of 45 years in a pre-registered research design. We find a small and non-significant relationship: One extra hour of daylight increases the suicide rate by merely 0.75 % (95 % CI: −0.4 % to 1.9 %). 相似文献

Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity is considered an important biomarker for aquatic environmental contamination. Although EROD activity has been widely used as a biomarker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fish, this activity can be influenced in the field by spatial-, seasonal- or individual-related factors. We therefore performed a comparative study of hepatic EROD activity levels in the croaker Plagioscion squamosissimus to determine whether variations existed in enzyme activity levels, especially in relationship to reproductive status, fish size, age, and seasonality. For this purpose, we collected fish from three reservoirs with different pollution levels during the early-rainy (November 2012), rainy (March 2013), and dry (July–August 2013) seasons from the Tietê River, Brazil. We tested whether size, age and sex affected EROD activity among the localities and seasons. We found a marked effect of pollution during the dry season on variation among the localities in EROD activity in P. squamosissimus. An analysis of covariance indicated that sex had a significant negative effect on the seasonal variability of the EROD activity levels at the most polluted locality (near São Paulo). A possible explanation for the statistical association between EROD activity and sex is that the reproductive status of the females influenced the EROD activity levels. A possible explanation for the statistical association between EROD activity and sex is that the reproductive status of the females influenced the EROD activity levels, also largely reported in the literature. Our results suggest that reproductive status can be a significant confounding factor for determining EROD activity in female P. squamosissimus in freshwater ecosystems when compared to males. Moreover, our results suggest that the presence of phenanthrene during the dry season at Barra Bonita reservoir might explain the highest EROD activity responses in this period of study. 相似文献

Effects of season and feeding level on reproductive activity and semen quality in Payoya buck goats 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this study was to determine if there is a seasonal pattern of reproductive activity in male Payoya goats and if this seasonality can be modulated by a higher level of nutrition. For a period of 16 months, 10 adult bucks were divided into two experimental groups that differed in their feeding level. The high nutrition group (H, n = 5) received 1.6 times their maintenance food requirements. The control nutrition group (C, n = 5) received a diet that supported 1.1 times their maintenance requirements. Body weight and testosterone concentrations were determined weekly, and testicular weight was determined every 2 weeks. Sexual behaviour and semen characteristics were determined monthly. Feeding level did not affect the onset or the end of the reproductive activity as measured by testosterone concentrations, with high testosterone concentrations between July and November. Ejaculation latency was positively influenced by feeding level: 43.2 ± 2.2 s vs. 61.6 ± 3.2 s for H and C group, respectively (P < 0.001). The percentage of males that ejaculated or that were sexually active was higher in the H group (P < 0.01). No differences between feeding levels were observed in the different semen characteristics studied. However, major differences between months were observed for all studied variables. These results lead us to conclude that Payoya bucks exhibit large seasonal variation in their reproductive activity. Higher feeding level allowed a better sexual behaviour in bucks in late spring, when male effect is used on the local livestock to breed females. 相似文献

In this paper we analyze the impact of seasonal variations on the dynamics of West Nile Virus infection. We are interested
in the generation of new epidemic peaks starting from an endemic state. In many cases, the oscillations generated by seasonality
in the dynamics of the infection are too small to be observable. The interplay of this seasonality with the epidemic oscillations
can generate new outbreaks starting from the endemic state through a mechanism of parametric resonance. Using experimental
data we present specific cases where this phenomenon is numerically observed. 相似文献

Social–chemical recognition is exhibited by all the Liolaemus lizards tested to date, except Liolaemus fitzgeraldi, which during post-hibernation did not discriminate chemosignals of same-sex individuals from a control. To clarify if L. fitzgeraldi is unique among the studied Liolaemus in lacking social–chemical recognition or if this was previously undetected, we recorded behavior during pre- and post-hibernation
when confronted with chemosignals of conspecifics and from themselves. L fitzgeraldi showed self-recognition and seasonal changes in two exploratory behaviors. Potentially, conspecific recognition in L fitzgeraldi was undetected due to seasonality, but this species may rely comparatively less on chemical communication than congeners. 相似文献

A number of explanations have been advanced to account for the increased frequency and intensity at which jellyfish (pelagic
cnidarians and ctenophores) blooms are being observed, most of which have been locally directed. Here, we investigate seasonal
and inter-annual patterns in abundance and distribution of jellyfish in the North Atlantic Ocean to determine if there have
been any system-wide changes over the period 1946–2005, by analysing records of the presence of coelenterates from the Continuous
Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey. Peaks in jellyfish abundance are strongly seasonal in both oceanic and shelf areas: oceanic
populations have a mid-year peak that is more closely related to peaks in phyto- and zooplankton, whilst the later peak of
shelf populations mirrors changes in SST and reflects processes of advection and aggregation. There have been large amplitude
cycles in the abundance of oceanic and shelf jellyfish (although not synchronous) over the last 60 years, with a pronounced
synchronous increase in abundance in both areas over the last 10 years. Inter-annual variations in jellyfish abundance in
oceanic areas are related to zooplankton abundance and temperature changes, but not to the North Atlantic Oscillation or to
a chlorophyll index. The long-term inter-annual abundance of jellyfish on the shelf could not be explained by any environmental
variables investigated. As multi-decadal cycles and more recent increase in jellyfish were obvious in both oceanic and shelf
areas, we conclude that these are likely to reflect an underlying climatic signal (and bottom-up control) rather than any
change in fishing pressure (top-down control). Our results also highlight the role of the CPR data in investigating long-term
changes in jellyfish, and suggest that the cnidarians sampled by the CPR are more likely to be holoplanktic hydrozoans and
not the much larger meroplanktic scyphozoans as has been suggested previously.
