The response of two peanut cultivars (Tainan 9 and SK 38) to applications of six boron (B) rates (H3BO3 at 0, 0.12, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 kg B ha–1) at two calcium levels [nil (-Ca) or CaSO4 at 100 kg Ca ha–1 (+Ca)] to a B-deficient Oxic Paleustult was studied in a pot experiment. Without added Ca, both cultivars had low seed yields and gave only small responses to B. Similarly, without added B, both cultivars had low seed yields and did not respond to Ca. But, with added Ca or B, they responded strongly to B and Ca, respectively. In both cultivars, deficiencies of Ca or B depressed seed dry weight by depressing seed size by over 75%. Boron deficiency further depressed seed dry weight by decreasing the number of seeds per plant by decreasing the number of seeds per pod in Tainan 9, and the number of pods per plant in SK 38. Seed dry weight was depressed more than pod dry weight, so that both Ca and B deficiencies severely depressed the shelling %. With added Ca, tainan 9 responded to lower levels of B than SK 38, reaching maximum seed dry weight at 0.12 kg B ha–1. At this low level of B. SK 38 yielded only half the seed dry weight of Tainan 9. But SK 38 continued to respond to increasing levels of B to 2 kg ha–1, producing a maximum seed yield 40% higher than Tainan 9. The results indicate that where all other nutrients are adequate, SK 38 will yield better than Tainan 9 on soils with high B, but worse on soils with low B. The implications of these findings for the selection of peanut cultivars are discussed.  相似文献

Wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L. cv Gamenya) were grown for 4 days in culture solutions of differing pH prior to studying their subsequent short-term absorption of 32Pi from solutions of the same or different pH.

Increasing pH of the absorption solution from 5.5 to 7.0 or 8.0 depressed 32Pi absorption from 1 and 10 micromolar Pi but had little effect at 100 and 1000 micromolar Pi. Increasing the pH of the culture solution from 4.5 to 6.5 doubled or trebled subsequent 32Pi absorption from nearly all absorption solutions over a wide range of Pi concentrations, pH, and nutrient compositions.

When seedlings were transferred between culture pH treatments 4.5 and 6.5, their capacity for 32Pi absorption remained unchanged for at least 5 hours and adjusted by 60 to 80% after 24 hours and completely after 48 hours. This suggests that the root's capacity to absorb Pi responds to pH through slow structural changes in its mechanism of Pi absorption. P content and concentration of wheat seedlings reflected the response of 32Pi absorption to culture pH.

It is suggested that absorption pH affects an activity component of the process for Pi absorption and culture pH affects a capacity component. Failure to recognize the capacity component of the pH response explains why previously published results for short-term 32Pi absorption conflict with those for long-term P accumulation in plants.

River discharge has long been recognized as one of the factors that contributes to the high productivity of estuaries. Although there is little evidence that river inputs of terrestrial carbon make a direct contribution to coastal food webs, such exported nutrients may stimulate in situ production in estuaries and thus enhance the survivorship and growth of fish and crustaceans in these systems. Furthermore, fluctuations in salinity and turbidity may influence the extent of available habitat for fish and crustaceans and therefore their distribution and/or catchability. Despite these potential links between flow and the secondary production of estuaries and coastal waters, there is still a common perception that ‘water going to sea is wasted’ and a continuing trend to regulate the flow of rivers. We review the evidence for links between river flow and the productivity of estuarine/coastal fisheries, drawing on a case study of the Logan River in southeast Queensland, and explore the potential mechanisms for these linkages. Our research, and that of others, confirms that high river discharge can have a strong positive effect on the production of commercial and recreational coastal fisheries. It also shows that the seasonal pattern of flow is equally, if not more important, than the magnitude of flow. River regulation is likely to have a dramatic effect on the production of coastal fisheries and, given the current pressures for water resource development, this is an important avenue for future research and evaluation.  相似文献

Lymph nodes (mandibular, mesenteric, mediastinal, and subiliac; n = 68) and fecal (n = 68) and hide (n = 35) samples were collected from beef carcasses harvested in an abattoir in Mexico. Samples were analyzed for Salmonella, and presumptive colonies were subjected to latex agglutination. Of the isolates recovered, a subset of 91 was characterized by serotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and antimicrobial susceptibility phenotyping. Salmonella was isolated from 100% (hide), 94.1% (feces), 91.2% (mesenteric), 76.5% (subiliac), 55.9% (mandibular), and 7.4% (mediastinal) of samples. From the 87 typeable isolates, eight Salmonella enterica serotypes, including Kentucky (32.2%), Anatum (29.9%), Reading (17.2%), Meleagridis (12.6%), Cerro (4.6%), Muenster (1.1%), Give (1.1%), and Mbandaka (1.1%), were identified. S. Meleagridis was more likely (P = 0.03) to be recovered from lymph nodes than from feces or hides, whereas S. Kentucky was more likely (P = 0.02) to be recovered from feces and hides than from lymph nodes. The majority (59.3%) of the Salmonella isolates were pansusceptible; however, multidrug resistance was observed in 13.2% of isolates. Typing by PFGE revealed that Salmonella strains generally clustered by serotype, but some serotypes (Anatum, Kentucky, Meleagridis, and Reading) were comprised of multiple PFGE subtypes. Indistinguishable PFGE subtypes and, therefore, serotypes were isolated from multiple sample types, and multiple PFGE subtypes were commonly observed within an animal. Given the overrepresentation of some serotypes within lymph nodes, we hypothesize that certain Salmonella strains may be better at entering the bovine host than other Salmonella strains or that some may be better adapted for survival within lymph nodes. Our data provide insight into the ecology of Salmonella within cohorts of cattle and offer direction for intervention opportunities.  相似文献

Abstract Dominance‐diversity curves have been previously constructed for a range of ecosystems around the world to illustrate the dominance of particular species and show how their relative abundances compare between communities separated in time or space. We investigate the usefulness of dominance‐diversity curves in rehabilitated areas to compare the floristic composition and abundance of “undisturbed” areas with disturbed areas, using bauxite mining rehabilitation in Western Australia as an example. Rehabilitated pits (11–13 years old) subjected to prescribed fire in autumn and spring were compared with unburned rehabilitated areas and the native jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest. Dominance diversity curves were constructed by ranking the log of the species density values from highest to lowest. Species were categorized according to a variety of functional responses: life form (trees, shrubs, subshrubs, and annuals), fire response syndrome (seeder or resprouter), nitrogen fixing capability, and origin (native or adventive). Exponential functions showed extremely good fits for all sites (r2 = 0.939–0.995). Dominance diversity graphs showed that after burning of rehabilitated areas, sites exhibited a more similar dominance‐diversity curve than before burning. This was emphasized in a classification (UPGMA) of the regression equations from the dominance‐diversity curves that showed that sites burned in spring were more similar to the native forest than sites burned in autumn. There was no significant segregation of the nitrogen‐fixing and species origin categories, although the life form and fire response groupings showed significant segregation along the dominance‐diversity curve. Resprouters tended to be over‐represented in the lower quartiles and under‐represented in the upper quartiles of post‐burn sites. It is suggested that using dominance‐diversity curves in the monitoring of rehabilitated areas may be a useful approach because it provides an easily interpretable visual representation of both species richness and abundance relationships and may be further utilized to emphasize categories of plants that are over‐ or under‐represented in rehabilitated areas. This will assist in the post‐rehabilitation management of these sites.  相似文献

Escherichia coli O26 has been identified as the most common non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) serogroup to cause human illnesses in the United States and has been implicated in outbreaks around the world. E. coli has high genomic plasticity, which facilitates the loss or acquisition of virulence genes. Attaching and effacing E. coli (AEEC) O26 strains have frequently been isolated from bovine feces, and there is a need to better characterize the relatedness of these strains to defined molecular pathotypes and to describe the extent of their genetic diversity. High-throughput real-time PCR was used to screen 178 E. coli O26 isolates from a single U.S. cattle feedlot, collected from May to July 2011, for the presence or absence of 25 O26 serogroup-specific and virulence-associated markers. The selected markers were capable of distinguishing these strains into molecularly defined groups (yielding 18 unique marker combinations). Analysis of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat 1 (CRISPR1) and CRISPR2a loci further discriminated isolates into 24 CRISPR types. The combination of molecular markers and CRISPR typing provided 20.8% diversity. The recent CRISPR PCR target SP_O26-E, which was previously identified only in stx2-positive O26:H11 human clinical strains, was identified in 96.4% (161/167 [95% confidence interval, 99.2 to 93.6%]) of the stx-negative AEEC O26:H11 bovine fecal strains. This supports that these stx-negative strains may have previously contained a prophage carrying stx or could acquire this prophage, thus possibly giving them the potential to become pathogenic to humans. These results show that investigation of specific genetic markers may further elucidate our understanding of the genetic diversity of AEEC O26 strains in bovine feces.  相似文献

The effect of boron (B) on peanut and soybean was examined in two omission and one B fertilizer rate trial on a Typic Tropaqualf in Northern Thailand. The B rate trial was combined with a comparison of the response of sunflower, green gram, black gram, wheat, and rice in addition to peanut and soybean grown in irrigated rice-based cropping sequences over two years. Omitting B induced the hollow heart symptom in 10% of peanut kernels with the incidence of hollow hearts closely related to B concentration in the kernels. Omission of B had no effect on the appearance of soybean seed or on the grain yield of either soybean or peanut. In the B rate experiment, omitting B depressed grain yield by 50% in sunflower and by 40% to 80% in black gram, induced B deficiency symptoms in green gram and the hollow heart symptom in peanut kernels, but had not significant effect on the grain yield of soybean, peanuts, rice, or wheat. B deficiency apparently depressed grain yield in black and green gram by delaying or inhibiting reproductive development thus reducing pod set.  相似文献

We used a submersible chronographic tethering device to compare the survival time of tethered juvenile brown tiger prawns (Penaeus esculentus [Haswell, 1897]) in seagrass and bare plots at two different sites. At one site, more prawns survived and those that were eaten survived for longer among the seagrass than on the bare habitat. However, at the other site there was little difference between numbers of survivors and survival time in the seagrass compared to the bare substrate. Laboratory observations suggest that the difference in survival was due to an effect of the tethers on the prawn's ability to escape from blue-swimmer crabs (Portunus pelagicus [Linnaeus 1758]), and differences in the abundance of P. pelagicus at the two field sites. P. pelagicus rely on olfaction, rather than sight to locate their prey, and so the crabs' efficiency at locating tethered prawns is not affected by the structure that seagrass provides. Our results clearly demonstrate an example of an artifact caused by experimental intervention, and highlight the need to investigate the possible effects of these types of artifacts.  相似文献

The bycatch of small cetaceans in commercial fisheries is a global wildlife management problem. We used data from skippers'' logbooks and independent observers to assess common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) bycatch patterns between 2003 and 2009 in the Pilbara Trawl Fishery, Western Australia. Both datasets indicated that dolphins were caught in all fishery areas, across all depths and throughout the year. Over the entire datasets, observer reported bycatch rates (n = 52 dolphins in 4,124 trawls, or 12.6 dolphins/1,000 trawls) were ca. double those reported by skippers (n = 180 dolphins in 27,904 trawls, or 6.5 dolphins/1,000 trawls). Generalised Linear Models based on observer data, which better explained the variation in dolphin bycatch, indicated that the most significant predictors of dolphin catch were: (1) vessel - one trawl vessel caught significantly more dolphins than three others assessed; (2) time of day – the lowest dolphin bycatch rates were between 00:00 and 05:59; and (3) whether nets included bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) - the rate was reduced by ca. 45%, from 18.8 to 10.3 dolphins/1,000 trawls, after their introduction. These results indicated that differences among vessels (or skippers'' trawling techniques) and dolphin behavior (a diurnal pattern) influenced the rates of dolphin capture; and that spatial or seasonal adjustments to trawling effort would be unlikely to significantly reduce dolphin bycatch. Recent skipper''s logbook data show that dolphin bycatch rates have not declined since those reported in 2006, when BRDs were introduced across the fishery. Modified BRDs, with top-opening escape hatches from which dolphins might escape to the surface, may be a more effective means of further reducing dolphin bycatch. The vulnerability of this dolphin population to trawling-related mortality cannot be assessed in the absence of an ongoing observer program and without information on trawler-associated dolphin community size, broader dolphin population size and connectivity with adjacent populations.  相似文献
