Increasing concentrations of K (20, 200, 2000 mum) in the nutrient solution depressed Ca content and concentration in barley plants growing in nutrient solutions of low Ca concentrations (250 and 2500 mum). Increasing K from 20 to 200 mum depressed Ca absorption more than increasing K from 200 to 2000 mum K.The strong depression of Ca absorption by low concentrations of K must involve a different process from that studied by other workers at high concentrations of K. Since the depression in net absorption of Ca was as great at 250 as at 2500 mum Ca the results fail to support previous suggestions that a specific mechanism for Ca absorption operates at low Ca concentrations. It is suggested that, at the low concentrations of K and Ca likely to be found at the root surface in many soil solutions, the above mentioned effect of K in inhibiting Ca absorption may be important in the Ca nutrition of plants. 相似文献
The mechanism of the effect of mild calcium deficiency on nitrogen metabolism of the symbiotic plant was studied from the distribution of calcium and of nitrogen and carbohydrate fractions in plant organs.
Nitrogen concentrations of all plant organs decreased with calcium deficiency. Addition of either a nitrogen or a calcium salt increased nitrogen concentrations. For roots as well as whole plants the effects of one salt were largely replaced by the other. These effects establish that calcium deficiency decreased the supply of fixed nitrogen from nodules to other organs. As weight of nodules was independent of calcium it follows that nodular efficiency was impaired.
Since nitrogen concentrations of nodules decreased rather than increased with calcium deficiency it is suggested that calcium deficiency interferes with the rate of reduction of nitrogen in the nodule rather than with the export of reduced nitrogen. Distribution of α-amino, amide, and ammonium nitrogen are consistent with this suggestion.
Nitrogen fixation was not limited by translocation of carbohydrates to nodules as calcium deficiency had little effect on the concentration of soluble carbohydrates and actually increased the concentration of starch in nodules.
Calcium deficiency depressed the calcium content of nodules so that nitrogen fixation may have been impaired by inadequate calcium for nodular structure or metabolism.
Disturbances have played a significant role in shaping vegetation patterns following European settlement and agricultural
development in Australia, particularly over the last 100 years. However, little is known about the temporal dynamics of plant
communities in relation to disturbances and their interactions. In this study we examined the response and recovery of temperate
grassland communities to disturbance, using a multi-factorial experiment involving grazing exclusion (absent and present),
fire (absent and present), soil cultivation (none, 5 and 20 cm) and soil amendment (none, fertiliser and fertiliser plus clover
seeds) on the New England Tablelands in NSW, Australia. Temporal patterns of plant communities were analysed using detrended
correspondence analysis for eight surveys over 24 months. Vegetation patterns at each survey were analysed using principal
components analysis. The effects of treatments on malleability (Bray–Curtis dissimilarity) of plant communities were analysed
using a linear mixed model, and the relationships between malleability and plant species groups were depicted using a generalised
additive model and further analysed using a linear model. Perennial native grasses and a non-native forb (Hypochaeris radicata) initially dominated the vegetation, but after the disturbances H. radicata and other non-native species dominated. Compositional changes from the initial states were greatest in the first spring (7 months
after treatment application), and then the vegetation tended to recover towards its original state. Soil cultivation resulted
in the greatest deviation in community composition, followed by soil amendment, fire, with grazing exclusion the least. The
recovery process and rate of recovery varied with treatment reflecting the dominance of soil cultivation and its interactions
with other forms of disturbances. Soil amendment and grazing exclusion tended to reduce the effects of soil cultivation. Malleability
was negatively related to perennial native grasses; positively to other non-native species, annual native grasses and perennial
native sedges/rushes; and negatively to H. radicata when its cover was below 18%, but positively when above 18%. The degree of malleability reflected the high resilience of
the vegetation to disturbance, and was mainly due to the recovery of perennial native grasses and H. radicata. This resilience demonstrated that the small-scale disturbances did not cause vegetation to cross an ecological threshold
and that the present vegetation is resilient to common disturbances occurring at small scales. The results also suggest (1)
that the present vegetation has developed mechanisms to adapt to these disturbances, (2) the importance of disturbance scale
or (3) that the ecological threshold had already been crossed and the present vegetation is in a degraded state compared with
its original state before the end of the 19th century. 相似文献
The effects of Bradyrhizobium (strains NC92 and TAL1000) and Fe supply on nodulation and nitrogen fixation of two peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivars (cv. Tainan 9 (Fe inefficient) and cv. 71-234 (Fe efficient)) grown under Fe deficient conditions (imposed by adding 40% CaCO3 to a ferruginous soil) were examined in a glasshouse experiment. When inoculated with TAL1000 without Fe, both cultivars had low shoot N concentration, very low nodule numbers and weight and no measurable acetylene reduction activity per plant. Inoculation with NC92 without Fe increased all these parameters substantially; addition of Fe with NC92 had no further effect on N concentration but doubled nodule number, weight and acetylene reduction activity per plant. Addition of Fe with TAL1000 increased all parameters to the same level as Fe+NC92, indicating that the poorer nodulation and N2 fixation of TAL1000 in the absence of Fe, resulted from a poorer ability in getting its Fe supply from the alkaline soil. The nodules from all treatments with measurable activity had the same specific acetylene reduction activity suggesting that Fe deficiency limited nodule development. The results support previous suggestions that Bradyrhizobium strains differ greatly in their ability to obtain Fe from soils and that selection of Fe efficient strains could complement plant breeding in the selection of legume crops for Fe deficient soils. 相似文献
Globally, many coral reefs are degraded and demonstrate reduced coral cover and increased macroalgal abundance. While negative correlations between macroalgae and coral recruitment have commonly been documented, the mechanisms by which macroalgae affects recruitment have received little attention. Here we examined the effect of macroalgae on larval settlement and the growth and survival of coral recruits, in a field experiment over nine months. Exclusion treatments were used to manipulate herbivory and macroalgal biomass, while settlement tiles measured coral settlement and survival. After nine months the volume of macroalgae was up to 40 times greater in the caged treatments than in controls and the settlement of coral larvae on the undersides of tiles within caged plots was 93% lower than in the uncaged treatments. The growth and survival of coral recruits was also severely reduced in the presence of macroalgae: survival was 79% lower in caged treatments and corals were up to 58% smaller with 75% fewer polyps. These data indicate that macroalgae has an additive effect on coral recruitment by reducing larval settlement and increasing recruit mortality. This research demonstrates that macroalgae can not only inhibit coral recruitment, but also potentially maintain dominance through a positive feedback system. 相似文献
A randomized controlled field trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of two sets of treatment strategies on ceftiofur and tetracycline resistance in feedlot cattle. The strategies consisted of ceftiofur crystalline-free acid (CCFA) administered to either one or all of the steers within a pen, followed by feeding or not feeding a therapeutic dose of chlortetracycline (CTC). Eighty-eight steers were randomly allocated to eight pens of 11 steers each. Both treatment regimens were randomly assigned to the pens in a two-way full factorial design. Non-type-specific (NTS) E. coli (n = 1,050) were isolated from fecal samples gathered on Days 0, 4, 12, and 26. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were determined using a microbroth dilution technique. PCR was used to detect tet(A), tet(B), and blaCMY-2 genes within each isolate. Chlortetracycline administration greatly exacerbated the already increased levels of both phenotypic and genotypic ceftiofur resistance conferred by prior CCFA treatment (P<0.05). The four treatment regimens also influenced the phenotypic multidrug resistance count of NTS E. coli populations. Chlortetracycline treatment alone was associated with an increased probability of selecting isolates that harbored tet(B) versus tet(A) (P<0.05); meanwhile, there was an inverse association between finding tet(A) versus tet(B) genes for any given regimen (P<0.05). The presence of a tet(A) gene was associated with an isolate exhibiting reduced phenotypic susceptibility to a higher median number of antimicrobials (n = 289, median = 6; 95% CI = 4–8) compared with the tet(B) gene (n = 208, median = 3; 95% CI = 3–4). Results indicate that CTC can exacerbate ceftiofur resistance following CCFA therapy and therefore should be avoided, especially when considering their use in sequence. Further studies are required to establish the animal-level effects of co-housing antimicrobial-treated and non-treated animals together. 相似文献
Abstract. Eucalyptus cladocalyx F. Muell., is a tree with a restricted distribution in the Southern Flinders Ranges, South Australia. It was originally introduced into the urban bushland of Kings Park, Perth, Western Australia in 1932 as an ornamental. Since its planting, E. cladocalyx has become invasive, spreading into the bushland up to 70 m away from planting sites. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the E. cladocalyx population is increasing at a greater rate than the two principal native tree species, E. gomphocephala DC. and E. marginata Donn ex Smith, but little is known about the factors influencing its invasion, or its biology. This study describes the population structure of E. cladocalyx , E. gomphocephala and E. marginata in Kings Park and the role of fire in the recruitment process. The study indicated that the three species have characteristics common to temperate Eucalyptus species that mass recruit seedlings following fire, with high numbers of seedlings found in recently burnt areas and low numbers in unburnt areas. Seedling survival in E. cladocalyx was higher than either of the native species. Furthermore, E. cladocalyx adults showed higher rates of canopy recovery following fires. It is argued that although fire in Kings Park is providing opportunities for E. cladocalyx , E. gomphocephala and E. marginata recruitment, the E. cladocalyx population is more resilient in an environment frequently disturbed by fire compared with the native populations. 相似文献
The susceptibility of soybean cultivars (cvs) to boron (B) deficiency was examined in three experiments on a Typic Tropaqualf in Northern Thailand: one experiment also included peanut cv Tainan 9 and black gram cv Regur.Without added B (B0), B deficiency depressed seed yield by 60% in soybean cv NW1 compared with 30% in cv SJ5, 40% in cv 7016, 45% in peanut, and 93% in black gram. B deficiency also induced a localised depression on the internal surface of one or both cotyledons of some soybean seeds resembling the symptom of hollow heart in peanut seeds. It induced 50% hollow heart in peanut, 17% in soybean cv NW1, 5% in SJ5, and 1% in 7016: black gram seeds had no symptoms. Addition of B decreased or eliminated the symptoms. In a comparison of 19 soybean cvs, the incidence of hollow heart symptoms in seeds at B0 varied widely from none in two cvs to 75% in cv Buchanan: cv NW1 showed intermediate susceptibility to B deficiency with 36% hollow heart in its seed while SJ5 was insensitive with 1%. Application of B eliminated hollow heart except from one seed in one cultivar. The results suggest that susceptibility to B deficiency is sufficiently important and variable among soybean genotypes to warrant its inclusion as a selection criterion when breeding cultivars for areas with low soil B. 相似文献
