By combining biotelemetry with animal-borne thermal loggers, we re-created the thermal histories of 21 summer-run Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) migrating in the Puntledge River, a hydropower impacted river system on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Daily maximum water temperatures in the Puntledge River during the summer-run adult Chinook salmon migration and residency period frequently exceeded 21 °C, a value that has been observed to elicit behavioral thermoregulation in other Chinook salmon populations. We therefore compared river temperatures to body temperatures of 16 fish that migrated through the river to understand if cool-water refuge was available and being used by migrants. In addition, we used thermal histories from fish and thermal loggers distributed in the river to model the effect of thermal habitat on energy density using a bioenergetics model. In general, we found no evidence that cool-water refuge existed in the river, suggesting that there is no opportunity for fish to behaviorally thermoregulate during upriver migration through the regulated portion of the river. Of the thermal histories used in the bioenergetics model, fish that reached an upstream lake were able to access cooler, deeper waters, which would have reduced energy consumption compared to fish that only spent time in the warmer river. Consequently, the Puntledge River water temperatures are likely approaching and in some cases exceeding the thermal limits of the summer-run Chinook salmon during the spawning migration. Bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) are recovering from severe population declines, and are exerting pressure on food resources in some areas. Thousands of bald eagles overwinter near Puget Sound, primarily to feed on chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) carcasses. We used modeling techniques to examine how anticipated climate changes will affect energetic demands of overwintering bald eagles. We applied a regional downscaling method to two global climate change models to obtain hourly temperature, precipitation, wind, and longwave radiation estimates at the mouths of three Puget Sound tributaries (the Skagit, Hamma Hamma, and Nisqually rivers) in two decades, the 1970s and the 2050s. Climate data were used to drive bald eagle bioenergetics models from December to February for each river, year, and decade. Bald eagle bioenergetics were insensitive to climate change: despite warmer winters in the 2050s, particularly near the Nisqually River, bald eagle food requirements declined only slightly (<1%). However, the warming climate caused salmon carcasses to decompose more rapidly, resulting in 11% to 14% less annual carcass biomass available to eagles in the 2050s. That estimate is likely conservative, as it does not account for decreased availability of carcasses due to anticipated increases in winter stream flow. Future climate-driven declines in winter food availability, coupled with a growing bald eagle population, may force eagles to seek alternate prey in the Puget Sound area or in more remote ecosystems. 相似文献

Salmon farming is a significant contribution to the global seafood market to which the goal of sustainability is often applied.
Diseases related to farms are perhaps the most contentious issues associated with sustainable salmon farming. We reviewed
literature and policies in British Columbia, Canada, as well as interviewed key informants to examine how fish health regulations
do or could support sustainability goals. We found four main obstacles to the development and application of a sustainability-based
health management system. First, salmon farming faced the same challenges as other industries when trying to establish an
operational definition of sustainability that captures all stakeholders’ interests. Second, there was no program responsible
for integrating the various regulations, responsible departments, and monitoring efforts to develop a comprehensive view of
sustainability. Third, there was inadequate research base and social consensus on the criteria that should be used to track
health outcomes for sustainability purposes. Fourth, the regulatory and management paradigm for salmon farming has been focused
on diseases and pathogens as opposed to embracing a more inclusive health promotion model that includes biotic, abiotic, and
social determinants of health. A transparent and inclusive participatory process that effectively links expert views with
community and industry concerns should serve as the foundation for the next generation of health management regulations for

O-acetylation is one of the major modifications of sialic acids that significantly alters biological properties of the parent molecule. These O-acetylated forms are components of the cellular membrane and can affect physiological and pathological responses. Understanding the role of N-glycans in physiology is of increasing relevance to cellular biologists in various disciplines who study glycoproteomics yet lack information regarding the function of the attached glycans. It is well known that stress may decrease immune function in fish; however, there are only few suitable biomarkers available to monitor the physiological responses under the stress conditions. This study is the first report on the effect of stress on the profile of O-acetylation of sialic acids in fish serum. In order to preserve the relevant structural characteristics as much as possible, native N-glycans were directly analyzed using CE-MS. We have characterized the N-glycans in serum of salmon (Salmo salar) exposed to long-term handling stress (15 s out of the water, daily for 4 wk) and compared with the results obtained from sera of control fish. The results indicated that major N-glycans in salmon serum contained mono-acetylated sialic acids (83%), and that the O-acetylation pattern of sialic acids could be altered by long-term stress. 相似文献

Seven novel and highly variable tetranucleotide microsatellite markers, and conditions for multiplexing and simultaneous genotyping six of these in a single run, are described for Atlantic salmon. These provide a highly informative and cost‐effective set of molecular markers for genetic studies on cultured and wild populations of the species. The primers sets showed cross‐species amplification of appropriately sized amplified products in a number of other salmonid species and suggests the primer sets may have wider application. 相似文献

We recorded the observed and actual swimming speeds of Atlantic salmon and sea trout post-smolts in a Norwegian fjord system, and initiated studies on the orientation mechanisms of the post-smolts. We tracked Atlantic salmon and sea trout with acoustic transmitters for up to 14 h after release. The actual swimming speed and direction of a fish relative to the ground is the vector sum of the observed movements of the fish and the movements of the water. We determined actual swimming speeds and directions of the post-smolts, which reflect their real swimming capacities and orientation, by corrections for the speed and direction of the water current. The post-smolts were actively swimming. The observed direction of movement was dependent on the actual movement of the fish and not the water current. Water currents were not systematically used as an orientation cue either in Atlantic salmon or sea trout, as the actual movements were random compared to the direction of the water current. The actual movement of sea trout were in all compass directions, with no systematic pattern. The Atlantic salmon also moved in all compass directions, but with the lowest frequency of actual movement towards the fjord. 相似文献

1. Pacific salmon are thought to stimulate the productivity of the fresh waters in which they spawn by fertilising them with marine‐derived nutrients (MDN). We compared the influence of salmon spawners on surface streamwater chemistry and benthic biota among three south‐eastern Alaska streams. Within each stream, reaches up‐ and downstream of barriers to salmon migration were sampled during or soon after spawners entered the streams. 2. Within streams, concentrations of dissolved ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), abundance of epilithon (chlorophyll a and ash‐free dry mass) and biomass of chironomids were significantly higher in reaches with salmon spawners. In contrast, biomass of the mayflies Epeorus spp. and Rhithrogena spp. was significantly higher in reaches lacking spawners. 3. Among streams, significant differences were found in concentrations of dissolved ammonium, dissolved organic carbon, nitrate and SRP, abundance of epilithon, and the biomass of chironomids and Rhithrogena. These differences did not appear to reflect differences among streams in spawner density, nor the changes in water chemistry resulting from salmon spawners. 4. Our results suggest that the ‘enrichment’ effect of salmon spawners (e.g. increased streamwater nutrient concentrations) was balanced by other concurrent effects of spawners on streams (e.g. sediment disturbance). Furthermore, the collective effect of spawners on lotic ecosystems is likely to be constrained by conditions unique to individual streams, such as temperature, background water chemistry and light attenuation. 相似文献

The effect of increased flow on movement and microhabitat use of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr in winter was investigated using radiotelemetry. To simulate hydropeaking operations, flow was increased four‐fold from 1·3 m3 s−1 to 5·2 m3 s−1 for 24 h periods. Flow did not affect fish habitat use or displacement and had little effect on fish activity within diel periods. During high flow periods in late winter, fish reduced night‐time activity. Stranding rates during flow reduction were also very low (only one fish). 相似文献
