The eel genus Histiobranchus Gill occurs benthopelagically over the continental rise and abyss of the World Ocean, primarily beneath temperate and subpolar surface waters. Its generic status within the subfamily Synaphobranchinae is confirmed by comparison of the structure and topography of its cephalic sensory system and skeletal features with Synaphobranchus. At least three species of Histiobranchus are recognized: H. bathybius (panoceanic), H. bruuni (Tasman Sea and waters south-east of New Zealand) and H. australis (two geographical forms; South Atlantic and south-western Indian Ocean, and South Indo-West Pacific Oceans). Collections totalling 319 specimens of H. bathybius from the eastern North Atlantic (1790–5440 m depth) yielded a size range of 99–1370 mm total length ( L T), with no apparent sexual dimorphism. Length–frequency distributions indicate a mode of juvenile fish at around 100–200 mm L T and a further two around 600–700 and 1300–1400 mm L T among adults. Generally smaller fish occur in shallower regions, although the size range is broad over the whole depth range. No apparent trend occurs in the size distribution with latitude over the range 17–54) N. Females outnumber males (1 male : 1·7 females) and both sexes are largely distinguishable from 300 mm L T. Ripening eggs occur in females from both adult length modes, with running ripe and spent females of very different size indicating iteroparity.  相似文献

Temperature and food availability are two important factors which affect fish growth and therefore are expected to influence habitat choice in fish. In this study, shoals of 16 juvenile roach, Rutilus rutilus , were given a choice between two chambers that differed in temperature by 1·5°C or 3°C whereas food availability was the same in both chambers (ratio 1 : 1) or higher in the colder one (ratio 4 : 1). The number of fish in each chamber was recorded for 10 min each during a pre-feeding, feeding and post-feeding period. Roach generally preferred the warmer over the colder chamber during the pre-feeding periods. Temperature had a significant effect on the distribution of fish during all three time periods whereas food availability was a significant factor only during the feeding period. The important role of temperature was emphasized further by the fact that a relatively small difference in the temperature gradient of 1·5°C had a stronger effect on fish distribution than a four times higher feeding rate during the feeding period. The implications for growth rates of such short-term decision-making of roach are discussed.  相似文献

Backcalculated lengths at the end of the first growth season in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar differed significantly between parr smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 years over a period of 11 years (i.e. 1983–1993). Mean body lengths of the respective age groups at the end of the first growth period were 11·1, 6·2 and 4·7 cm, respectively. The mean percentage distribution of fish smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 was 14, 78 and 7%, and the mean smolt age was 1·95 years. Mean lengths at smolting of age groups 1, 2 and 3 were 13·6, 15·8 and 17·5 cm, respectively. Females outnumbered males among the downstream migrating smolts with a mean sex ratio (females/ males) estimated at 1·61, with a significant female surplus in 7 of the 11 years sampled. Of the smolts sampled, 14% exhibited enlarged gonads indicative of parr maturation, and all were males (37% of the parr males sampled). Mean annual smolt density from 1975 to 1996 was 13·4 individuals 100 m−2 ranging between 0·3–31 smolts 100 m−2. Mean densities (100 m−2) of the smolts aged 1, 2 and 3 years were 1·5, 9·3 and 0·9 fish, respectively. Mean annual biomass for the 22-year period (1975–1996) was estimated at 437 g 100 m−2, with a range of variation from 136 to 683 g 100 m−2. Smolt age 2 made up 81% of the mean annual biomass (355 g 100 m−2) and smolt age 1 and 3, 8% (35 g 100 m−2) and 11% (47 g 100 m−2), respectively.  相似文献

In savanna parklands of southern Texas, patches of grassland and discrete clusters of small trees and shrubs occur on sandy loam surface soils underlain by an argillic horizon (claypan) at 40 cm. Large trees and shrubs in groves occur on deep (2 m) sandy loam soils without an argillic horizon. 2H and 18O of rainfall, groundwater, and soil and plant water were measured to: (1) determine if coexistence in woody patches occurs via vertical stratification of soil water uptake; (2) document differences in plant water acquisition on contrasting soil types; and (3) evaluate recharge and evaporative losses of soil moisture from grassland vs. wooded landscape elements. Groundwater was isotopically similar to weighted rainfall, suggesting local recharge at this site. Linear regressions of soil water 2H on 18O yielded slopes less than the meteoric water line, indicating significant evaporative losses of soil moisture in all landscape elements. Interspecific differences in root density distribution were significant; some woody species had roots well below 1.6 m, while others had few roots below 0.8 m. 2H and 18O values of stem water from all plants in groves were lower than those of soil water in the upper 1.5 m of the profile, suggesting all species obtained their water from depths >1.5 m. Deep roots of trees and shrubs at this savanna parkland site thus appeared to have a functional significance that was not revealed by biomass or density determinations. Root densities of species in discrete clusters (claypan present) were typically greater than those of the same species in groves (claypan absent), especially in the upper 80 cm of the soil profile. Consistent with rooting profiles, 2H and 18O values of plant water indicated that trees and shrubs in discrete clusters with fine- textured subsoils obtained most of their water at depths <1.5 m. As with groves, there was no indication of water resource partitioning between species. In summary, we saw no isotopic evidence that co- occurring woody plants at this savanna parkland site were partitioning soil moisture vertically during late summer/early fall, despite marked differences in their root density distributions. This supports other lines of evidence which indicate that species interactions in tree/shrub clumps are competitive, and that species composition is therefore unstable in those landscape elements.  相似文献

 Wild soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. et Zucc.), regarded as the progenitor of cultivated soybean [G. max (L.) Merr.], is widely distributed in East Asia. We have collected 1097 G. soja plants from all over Japan and analyzed restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in them. Based on the RFLPs detected by gel-blot analysis, using coxII and atp6 as probes, the collected plants were divided into 18 groups. Five mtDNA types accounted for 94% of the plants examined. The geographic distribution of mtDNA types revealed that, in many regions, wild soybeans grown in Japan consisted of a mixture of plants with different types of mtDNA, occasionally even within sites. Some of the mtDNA types showed marked geographic clines among the regions. Additionally, some wild soybeans possessed mtDNA types that were identical to those widely detected in cultivated soybeans. Our results suggest that the analysis of mtDNA could resolve the maternal lineage among plants of the genus Glycine subgenus Soja. Received: 16 June 1997/Accepted: 5 August 1997  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to determine the influence of food distribution (clumped vs dispersed) on processes of competition among seven captive male hamadryas-like baboons. Spatial cohesion, cohesive behaviours that males performed and received from their females, and aggressive and feeding behaviours of the males were collected during 35 min after food supply. Median values and variability of these variables were compared in both the feeding situations. Food distribution influenced both asymmetries in access and the form of competition. When food was clumped, those with less access fed by means of compensatory or alternative strategies (away from the main source and/or by feeding supplants), and they were more aggressive towards other males. When food was dispersed, all individuals could feed simultaneously, males that were more aggressive were those with less cohesive OMUs, despite the fact that cohesive behaviours remained constant. Females appeared to contribute to variation in the OMU's cohesion through their responses to both food distribution and males' competitive ability.  相似文献

To study the export of sugars from leaves and their long-distance transport, sucrose-proton/co-transporter activity of potato was inhibited by antisense repression of StSUT1 under control of either a ubiquitously active (CaMV 35S ) or a companion-cell-specific (rolC) promotor in transgenic plants. Transformants exhibiting reduced levels of the sucrose-transporter mRNA and showing a dramatic reduction in root and tuber growth, were chosen to investigate the ultrastructure of their source leaves. The transformants had a regular leaf anatomy with a single-layered palisade parenchyma, and bicollateral minor veins within the spongy parenchyma. Regardless of the promoter used, source leaves from transformants showed an altered leaf phenotype and a permanent accumulation of assimilates as indicated by the number and size of starch grains, and by the occurrence of lipid-storing oleosomes. Starch accumulated throughout the leaf: in epidermis, mesophyll and, to a smaller degree, in phloem parenchyma cells of minor veins. Oleosomes were observed equally in mesophyll and phloem parenchyma cells. Companion cells were not involved in lipid accmulation and their chloroplasts developed only small starch grains. The similarity of ultrastructural symptoms under both promotors corresponds to, rather than contradicts, the hypothesis that assimilates can move symplasmically from mesophyll, via the bundle sheath, up to the phloem. The microscopical symptoms of a constitutively high sugar level in the transformant leaves were compared with those in wild-type plants after cold-girdling of the petiole. Inhibition of sugar export, both by a reduction of sucrose carriers in the sieve element/companion cell complex (se/cc complex), or further downstream by cold-girdling, equally evokes the accumulation of assimilates in all leaf tissues up to the se/cc complex border. However, microscopy revealed that antisense inhibition of loading produces a persistently high sugar level throughout the leaf, while cold-girdling leads only to local patches containing high levels of sugar. 对金毛弓背蚁Camponotus tonkinus Santschi的巢穴结构、工蚁头宽频数特征及巢外活动节律作了系统的观察和分析。发现金毛弓背蚁地下巢穴极为复杂,有纵横交错的通道系统和众多的小室,蚁后室位于巢穴底部,工蚁的头宽为连续性,范围在1.05-3.85mm,频数分布为不对称的单峰,头宽在1.4~2.Omm的个体最多,占总数的72.7%,晴朗天气里工蚁出入巢活动在上午和下午各有一个高峰,中午随温度升高金毛弓背蚁外出活动进入低谷.  相似文献
