A variety of invertebrates are commonly fed to insectivorous animals by both zoos and hobbyists, but information as to the nutrient composition of most commercially raised species is limited. Adult house crickets, house cricket nymphs (Acheta domesticus), superworms (Zophobas morio larvae), giant mealworm larvae, mealworm larvae and adult mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), waxworm larvae (Galleria mellonella), and silkworm larvae (Bombyx mori) were analyzed for moisture, crude protein, crude fat, ash, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins. Earthworms (Lumbricus terresstris) were analyzed for moisture, crude protein, crude fat, ash, ADF, NDF, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins A and D3. Proximate analyses were variable, with wide ranges found for moisture (57.9–83.6%), crude protein (9.3–23.7%), crude fat (1.6–24.9%), ADF (0.1–7.4%), NDF (0.0–11.5%), and ash (0.6–1.2%). Energy content ranged from a low of 674 kcal/kg for silkworms to 2,741 kcal/kg for waxworms.Using an amino acid scoring pattern for rats, the first limiting amino acid for all invertebrates tested was the total sulfur amino acid methionine+cystine. Deficiencies by nutrient (% of samples deficient vs. NRC requirements for rats on a dry matter (DM) basis) were as follows: calcium (100%), vitamin D3 (100%), vitamin A (89%), vitamin B12 (75%), thiamin (63%), vitamin E (50%), iodine (44%), manganese (22%), methionine‐cystine (22%), and sodium (11%). Deficiencies by invertebrate species (number of nutrients deficient vs. the NRC requirements for rats on a DM basis) were as follows: waxworms (9), superworms (8), giant mealworm larvae (7), adult mealworms (6), mealworm larvae (5), adult house crickets (4), house cricket nymphs (4), silkworms (4), and earthworms (4). These data provide a basis for determining nutrient intake of captive insectivores, and will aid in the development of gut‐loading diets to provide captive insectivorous animals with appropriate levels of necessary nutrients. Abstract It is well known that the sodium smectite class of clays swells macroscopically in contact with water, whereas under normal conditions the potassium form does not. In recent work using molecular simulation methods, we have provided a quantitative explanation both for the swelling behaviour of sodium smectite clays and the lack of swelling of potassium smectites [1]. In the present paper, we apply similar modelling methods to study the mechanism of inhibition of clay-swelling by a range of organic molecules. Experimentally, it is known that polyalkylene glycols (polyethers) of intermediate to high relative molecular mass are effective inhibitors of smectite clay swelling. We use a range of atomistic simulation techniques, including Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics, to investigate the interactions between a selection of these compounds, water, and a model smectite clay mineral. These interactions occur by means of organised intercalation of water and organic molecules within the galleries between individual clay layers. The atomic interaction potentials deployed in this work are not as highly optimised as those used in our clay-cation-water work [1]. Nevertheless, our simulations yield trends and results that are in qualitative and sometimes semi-quantitative agreement with experimental findings on similiar (but not identical) systems. The internal energy of adsorption of simple polyethers per unit mass on the model clay is not significantly different from that for water adsorption; our Monte Carlo studies indicate that entropy is the driving force for the sorption of the simpler organic molecules inside the clay layers: a single long chain polyethylene glycol can displace a large number of water molecules, each of whose translational entropy is greatly enhanced when outside the clay. Hydrophobically modified polyalkylene glycols also enjoy significant van der Waals interactions within the layers which they form within the clay galleries. In conjunction with experimental studies, our work furnishes valuable insights into the relative effectiveness of the compounds considered and reveals the generic features that high performance clay-swelling inhibitors should possess. For optimal inhibitory activity, these compounds should be reasonably long chain linear organic molecules with localised hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions along the chain. On intercalation of these molecules within the clay layers, the hydrophobic regions provide an effective seal against ingress of water, while the hydrophilic ones enhance the binding of the sodium cations to the clay surface, preventing their hydration and the ensuing clay swelling. 相似文献

对内蒙古欧李果肉及果仁中营养成分进行研究,结果表明,欧李中维生素、矿物质、蛋白质等营养成分丰富,其中VC的质量分数为590.1 mg.kg-1,远远高于苹果、草莓、葡萄、柑橘、西红柿等水果的VC含量;矿物质元素Ca质量分数在果肉中达428.1 mg.kg-1,是其它水果Ca含量的2~10倍;果仁中达3.743 g.kg-1,其含量与杏仁中相当;蛋白质含量丰富,氨基酸种类齐全,必需氨基酸在果肉和果仁中所占比例达氨基酸总量的1/3以上,为以后的研究开发利用提供了理论依据。 相似文献

Analysis of new data and reinterpretation of published information for clay minerals found in temperate climate soil profiles
indicates that there is often a gradient of “illite-like” clay minerals with depth. We used the term “illite-like” because
these observations are based on X-Ray Diffractogram patterns and not on layer charge measurements which allow to define properly
illite. It appears that “illite-like” layers are concentrated in the upper, organic - rich portion of the soil profile both
under grassland and forest vegetation. “Illite-like” layer quantity seems directly related to soil potassium status. Indeed,
intensive agriculture practises without potassium fertilization reduce “illite-like” content in surface soils, whereas several
years of potassic fertilization without plant growth can increase “illite-like” content. The potassic soil clay mineral, illite,
is particularly important in that it can be the major source of readily available potassium for plants. Spatial and temporal
dynamics of clay minerals should be related to the potassium cycle. We propose that the frequently observed general trend
of increasing exchangeable potassium in the top soil can be correlated with an increase in “illite-like” in the clays and
that the decrease of potassium caused by intensive agricultural practices leads to “illite-like” layer destabilization. This
vision of “illite-like” layer as a potassium reservoir refueled by plants and emptied by intensive cropping renews the concept
of potassium availability and indicates a need to be discussed as well in natural ecosystems as in cultivated ecosystems. 相似文献

Mineral control of organic carbon mineralization in a range of temperate conifer forest soils 总被引:10,自引:1,他引:10
Coupled climate–ecosystem models predict significant alteration of temperate forest biome distribution in response to climate warming. Temperate forest biomes contain approximately 10% of global soil carbon (C) stocks and therefore any change in their distribution may have significant impacts on terrestrial C budgets. Using the Sierra Nevada as a model system for temperate forest soils, we examined the effects of temperature and soil mineralogy on soil C mineralization. We incubated soils from three conifer biomes dominated by ponderosa pine (PP), white fir (WF), and red fir (RF) tree species, on granite (GR), basalt (BS), and andesite (AN) parent materials, at three temperatures (12.5°C, 7.5°C, 5.0°C). AN soils were dominated by noncrystalline materials (allophane, Al‐humus complexes), GR soils by crystalline minerals (kaolinite, vermiculite), and BS soils by a mix of crystalline and noncrystalline materials. Soil C mineralization (ranging from 1.9 to 34.6 [mg C (g soil C)?1] or 0.1 to 2.3 [mg C (g soil)?1]) differed significantly between parent materials in all biomes with a general pattern of ANδ13C values of respired CO2 suggest greater decomposition of recalcitrant soil C compounds with increasing temperature, indicating a shift in primary C source utilization with temperature. Our results demonstrate that soil mineralogy moderates soil C mineralization and that soil C response to temperature includes shifts in decomposition rates, mineralizable pool size, and primary C source utilization. 相似文献

Diarrhea is one of the most frequent diseases affecting newborn calves in intensive systems. Several strategies were proposed to protect and improve health, such as probiotics. This work was directed to design a product containing freeze-dried bacteria, vitamins, and minerals, as well as to optimize conditions with lyoprotectors, combine strains and add vitamins, minerals, and inulin to the product. The lyoprotectors were milk, milk-whey, and actose, and products were stored for 6 months at 4°C. Combined bacteria were freeze-dried in milk and the final products were added with minerals, vitamins, and insulin. The viable cells were determined by the plate count assay and antibiotic profiles to differentiate strains. Lactobacillus johnsonii CRL1693, L. murinus CRL1695, L. mucosae CRL1696, L. salivarius CRL1702, L. amylovorus CRL1697, and Enterococcus faecium CRL1703 were evaluated. The optimal conditions were different for each strain. Milk and milk whey maintained the viability during the process and storage after 6 months for most of the strains, except for L. johnsonii. Lactose did not improve cell’s recovery. L. murinus was viable for 6 months in all the conditions, with similar results in enterococci. In strains combined before freeze-dried, the viability decreased deeply, showing that one-step process with bacteria mixtures, vitamins, and minerals were not adequate. Exploding global population, rapid urbanization, salinization of soils, decreasing arable land availability, groundwater resources, and dynamic climatic conditions pose impending damage to our food security by reducing the grain quality and quantity. This issue is further compounded in arid and semi-arid regions due to the shortage of irrigation water and erratic rainfalls. Millets are gluten (a family of proteins)-free and cultivated all over the globe for human consumption, fuel, feed, and fodder. They provide nutritional security for the under- and malnourished. With the deployment of strategies like foliar spray, traditional/marker-assisted breeding, identification of candidate genes for the translocation of important minerals, and genome-editing technologies, it is now tenable to biofortify important millets. Since the bioavailability of iron and zinc has been proven in human trials, the challenge is to make such grains accessible. The effects of supplementing the organic forms of selenium (Se), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) on Hsp-70 mRNA expression and body weight in broiler chickens were evaluated. 200 chicks were equally distributed into stainless steel battery brooders at the rate of 5 birds per pen and reared under heat stress condition up to 42nd day. The chicks were fed with three experimental diets supplemented with organic forms of Se (0.30?mg/kg), Cr (2?mg/kg), and Zn (40?mg/kg) during the starter and finisher phases and a control diet without any supplementation. On the 21st and 42nd day, 20 birds from each period were sacrificed and samples were collected for analysis. Organic Se, Cr, and Zn supplementation significantly (P?0.05) reduced the expression of Hsp-70 mRNA levels. The Hsp-70 mRNA expression levels were significantly (P?0.05) different between the tissues studied with spleen having the lowest expression level. Hsp-70 mRNA expression level was not affected by age of the birds. The study concluded that organic trace mineral (oTM) supplementation resulted in low Hsp-70 mRNA expression, indicating reduced heat stress in broilers. 相似文献
