Lactation is associated with suppression of reproductive function, the duration of which depends on the number of young suckled and food availability. Although previous studies have documented increasing responsivity to the positive feedback effects of estrogen on luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion with time postpartum, changes in the ability of estrogen to stimulate sexual behavior across these time points and the influence of food restriction on response to estrogen have not been investigated. Thus, we compared the ability of exogenous estrogen administration to stimulate proceptive and receptive behavior in ad libitum fed and food restricted rats on Days 15 and 20 postpartum. Because the ability of estrogen to induce sexual behavior depends on activation of both estrogen receptors and estrogen-induced progesterone receptors, a second study compared estrogen and progesterone-ir within the VMH and MPOA in similar groups. Finally, we investigated the role of the high levels of progesterone typical of lactation in the suppression of estrogen-induced sexual behavior by transient blockade of the progesterone receptor using RU486. As expected there was an increase across time in the ability of estrogen to stimulate sexual behavior that correlated with an increased ability of estrogen to induce progesterone receptors in the MPOA that was most evident in ad libitum fed rats. RU486 administration concomitant with estrogen administration increased solicitation behavior and was most effective in ad libitum fed rats suggesting an inhibitory role of progesterone on estrogen-induced sexual proceptivity in lactating rats. 相似文献

Pinnipeds display a remarkable variation in life history adaptations while successfully inhabiting almost every marine environment. We explore how they have done this by grouping the world’s pinniped species according to their environmental conditions, mating systems, lactation strategies, and timing of life histories. Next, we tested whether any of these clusters provide information about risk of extinction (using the International Union for Nature and the Conservation of Natural Resources status ranks). Seals at risk were not characterized by differences in lactation pattern (22% short vs. 46% long), mating system (24% multi-male vs. 35% harems), or timing of life history events (23% fast vs. 42% slow) but did differ based on four environmental groupings. Grouping traits (rather than seals) described two clusters: one that included the environmental trait, primary productivity, and a second one that included all other environmental variables (seasonality, latitude, and temperature). Based on this result and theoretical considerations, we plotted seals according to energy (primary productivity) and variation (seasonality) and found a pattern analogous to that of the same four groups determined by cluster analysis of all environmental variables. Of the two pinniped groups representing low variation (equatorial and high productivity), ten of 21 seal species have been designated at risk, in contrast to none of the 13 seal species adapted to high variation. We conclude that seals appear to be best adapted to seasonal environments and thus, conservation efforts may benefit by concentrating on species inhabiting less variable environments. 相似文献

Most small mammals support the nutritional requirements of milk production by increasing food intake. However, when nutrient intake is low, maternal body reserves may be mobilized to maintain adequate milk output. We examined patterns of body composition, including dry matter, fat, protein, and mineral content in big brown bats, Eptesicus fuscus, during lactation. Concentrations of fat and phosphorus were markedly lower in lactating mothers during week three of lactation than during the first two weeks, but these constituents rebounded to previous levels in the fourth and fifth week. Rapid recovery from fat depletion suggests that females are able to adjust to changes in demands for energy. The decrease in phosphorus during mid-lactation suggests bone demineralization, but an interspecific comparison of adult concentrations of minerals prevalent in bone suggests that mineral concentrations may never reach critically low levels in reproductively active females. 相似文献

ATP-binding cassette transporter G2 (ABCG2) gene encodes a protein that has a wide variety of substrates and is responsible
for the active secretion of clinically and toxicologically important molecules into milk. Although known in many species,
this marks the first time this gene product has been reported in goats. In this study, we cloned and sequenced goat ABCG2
gene complete coding sequence and predicted its putative translated protein structure with implicative functional domains.
One six-transmembrane span on C-terminal region and at least one coiled-coil domain on N-terminal were predicted and compared
primarily with those of other closely related species. In addition, three conserved cysteines (in positions 595, 606, and
611) were determined toward the C-terminal of goat’s ABCG2. Two known functional motifs were identified in goat’s protein
through comparative studies with other species. The goat ABCG2 relative expression profile revealed that the gene expression

A study based on 12 pregnant and six dry Barki ewes was carried out to examine the changes in blood constituents during pregnancy and lactation periods. The blood parameters were blood hemoglobin, packed cell volume percent (PCV%), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), glucose, aspartate aminotransaminase (AST or GOT), alanine aminotransaminase (ALT or GPT), total plasma protein, albumin, globulin, albumin to globulin ratio (A/G), urea and creatinine. During pregnancy all these parameters started to increase significantly, but in different stages, reaching maximum values at parturition. In contrast, dry ewes showed almost stable values during the experimental period. From 10th week to parturition, PCV% and MCHC increased (P<0.01) in pregnant ewes, which resulted in increased (P<0.01) blood hemoglobin. Blood glucose increased from the 4th week of pregnancy to reach its maximum at parturition (60.15–90.08 mg/dl). The two transaminases increased significantly from the 2nd week (52.23–65.02 IU for AST and 8.02–15.12 IU for ALT). Plasma protein with its two components, albumin and globulin, increased significantly at the 6th week, but dropped throughout the 16–18th week of pregnancy. Urea and creatinine began to increase significantly after 10–12 weeks of pregnancy (from 54.73 to 72.11 mg/dl for urea and from 0.882 to 2.475 mg/dl for creatinine). During the first month of lactation, PCV decreased sharply in lactating ewes and was significantly lower than in dry ewes at the 3rd week of lactation (24.25 versus 27.17%), which resulted in a drop in blood hemoglobin at the 4th week (68.42 versus 74.00 g/l). However, lactating ewes maintained significantly higher values of MCHC (30.01–31.19% for lactating versus 29.87–27.48% for dry). In lactating ewes, levels of glucose, ALT, urea and creatinine returned to levels comparable to those in dry ewes. The same occurred with total plasma proteins, mainly due to a sharp decrease in globulin, while albumin remained higher than in dry ewes with a slow decline, which resulted in higher values of A/G ratio during lactation. evolutionary biology has investigated lactation as an important aspect of parenting strategy, with implications for understanding
parent-offspring conflict. These perspectives are brought together in an attempt to develop integrated models for an issue
of key international health concern: the duration of exclusive breast-feeding and the timing of weaning. This analysis highlights
the relevance of evolutionary theory for practical problems in public health, and it suggests the utility of public health
outcomes for addressing evolutionary questions.

The objective of this work was to construct a dynamic model of hepatic amino acid metabolism in the lactating dairy cow that could be parameterized using net flow data from in vivo experiments. The model considers 22 amino acids, ammonia, urea, and 13 energetic metabolites, and was parameterized using a steady-state balance model and two in vivo, net flow experiments conducted with mid-lactation dairy cows. Extracellular flows were derived directly from the observed data. An optimization routine was used to derive nine intracellular flows. The resulting dynamic model was found to be stable across a range of inputs suggesting that it can be perturbed and applied to other physiological states. Although nitrogen was generally in balance, leucine was in slight deficit compared to predicted needs for export protein synthesis, suggesting that an alternative source of leucine (e.g. peptides) was utilized. Simulations of varying glucagon concentrations indicated that an additional 5 mol/d of glucose could be synthesized at the reference substrate concentrations and blood flows. The increased glucose production was supported by increased removal from blood of lactate, glutamate, aspartate, alanine, asparagine, and glutamine. As glucose output increased, ketone body and acetate release increased while CO(2) release declined. The pattern of amino acids appearing in hepatic vein blood was affected by changes in amino acid concentration in portal vein blood, portal blood flow rate and glucagon concentration, with methionine and phenylalanine being the most affected of essential amino acids. Ghrelin, a novel acylated peptide and endogenous ligand for growth hormone (GH) secretagogue receptor, was originally isolated from rat and human stomachs. In addition to its GH-releasing activity, ghrelin plays an important role in many physiological functions, including food intake, gastric acid secretion, neonatal development, and so on. In this study, the effect of daily treatment with ghrelin on milk production was investigated in lactating rats and the development of the pups was monitored. Daily subcutaneous injection of ghrelin into nursing dams for 8 days from parturition caused a significant increase in milk yield and litter weight gain. When litters nursed by ghrelin-treated and saline-treated dams were interchanged on day 4 of lactation, the growth curves were reversed. Daily injections of ghrelin also increased plasma GH levels. Northern blot analysis revealed that daily injection of ghrelin significantly increased mammary casein mRNA expression. In addition, RT-PCR analysis showed that a ghrelin receptor was present in the mammary glands of lactating rats. These results suggest that ghrelin may play an important role in milk production in lactating dams. 相似文献
