We measured daily energy expenditure (DEE) and water turnover rates in lactating and non-lactating short beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) using the doubly labelled water technique during the lactation period in spring. Reproductively inactive echidnas were on average significantly heavier (median: 3354 g; range: 2929-3780 g; N=4) than lactating females (median: 2695 g; range: 2690-2715 g; N=3) during the equivalent time period. The median water flux rate of lactating echidnas (152 ml day(-1); range: 120-198 ml day(-1)) did not differ significantly from that of non-lactating females (170 ml day(-1); range: 128-227 ml day(-1)). The median DEE of echidnas that were lactating was 645 kJ day(-1) (range: 581-850 kJ day(-1)), which was not different from the median DEE of non-reproductive control females (763 kJ day(-1); range: 720-766 kJ day(-1)). Lactating females somehow compensate for the energy costs of milk production, resulting in a daily energy budget that is not different from that of non-reproductive females. At least part of their energy minimising strategy could involve the use of moderate heterothermy, allowing a greater proportion of daily energy expenditure to diverted to milk production.  相似文献

Predatory (towards crickets), intermale, and maternal aggression were examined in four replicate lines of mice that had been selectively bred for high wheel-running (S) and in four random-bred control lines (C). In generation 18, individual differences in both predatory and intermale aggression were significantly consistent across four trial days, but predatory and intermale aggression were uncorrelated both at the individual level and among the eight line means. Latencies to attack crickets were significantly lower in S lines as a group. Intermale aggression, however, did not differ between S and C lines. S lines were significantly smaller in body mass, but did not differ in either testes mass or plasma testosterone. In generations 28 and 30, respectively, S and C lines did not differ in either maternal or intermale aggression. However, significant differences among the individual lines were found for maternal aggression, and one S line exhibited an extremely high mean time of aggression (>120 sec for a 5-min test). Maternal and intermale aggression were not correlated among the eight line means or at the level of individual variation. Overall, our results suggest: (1) predatory aggression and voluntary wheel-running are positively related at the genetic level; (2) predatory and intermale aggression are unrelated at a genetic level; and (3) maternal and intermale aggression are not tightly related at the genetic level. Possible relationships between predatory aggression, dopamine, and wheel-running behavior are discussed.  相似文献

研究大豆黄酮(Da)对妊娠大鼠乳腺发育和泌乳的作用及其与神经内分泌的关系,结果表明;妊娠期口服大豆黄酮,能显著提高泌乳前期大鼠乳腺重量、DNA、RNA含量和RNA/DNA值,同时极显著地提高大鼠的泌乳量、血清GH和PRL含量及乳腺胞浆雌二醇受体的数目和亲和力;相反.妊娠后期口服多巴胺激动剂溴隐亭,能显著降低泌乳前期乳腺重量、DNA和RNA含量及泌乳量,并显著降低血清GH和PRL含量及乳腺雌二醇受体的数目和亲和力;但连续两周口服Da后再口服澳隐亭一周,溴隐亭的上述作用被阻断。结果提示:Da促进大鼠乳腺发育和泌乳的作用与其抑制或站抗多巴胺对垂体PRL、GH分泌的抑制作用有关。  相似文献

Dairy products are the major source of odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFAs), a group of nutrients with emerging health benefits. The animal diet is known to influence milk fat OBCFAs of dairy cows; however, little is known about the effects of physiological factors. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of parity and lactation stage on OBCFAs in milk fat of dairy cows. Holstein dairy cows (n = 157) were selected according to parity (first, second, third, or greater) and days in milk (DIM) (≤21 DIM, 21 < DIM ≤ 100, 100 < DIM ≤ 200, >200 DIM). All cows were fed the same total mixed ration for three weeks. Milk samples were collected during the last three days of each lactation stage for fatty acid (FA) analyses via gas chromatography. Results showed that first- and second-parity cows displayed significantly higher proportions and yields of iso-14:0, iso-15:0, iso-16:0, total iso-FA, and total branched-chain FA (P < 0.05) compared with other parities. The proportions of C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 were also greater in first-parity cows (P < 0.05), while the yields of C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 were similar among different parities (P > 0.05). The proportions of total OBCFAs were greater in first- and second-parity cows (P < 0.05), whereas the highest yield was observed in second-parity cows. Lactation dairy cows in ≤ 21 DIM group displayed lower proportions of iso-13:0, anteiso-13:0, C13:0, iso-14:0, C15:0, iso-16:0, total iso-FA, and total OBCFAs compared with that of the other groups (P < 0.05), and also lower yields of iso-14:0 and iso-16:0 (P < 0.05). In contrast, C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 proportions and yields were higher in dairy cows with ≤ 21 DIM (P < 0.05). Iso-17:0 and anteiso-17:0 were not affected by lactation stage (P > 0.05). Taken together, our data showed that both parity and lactation stage have considerable effects on milk fat OBCFAs of dairy cows. In summary, first- and second-parity cows had higher milk OBCFAs compared with later parity cows, and OBCFAs with medium chain lengths were lower in dairy cows with ≤ 21 DIM, while C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 were higher. These findings show that milk OBCFA contents are differentially modulated by physiological state. They will be useful in future studies that seek to alter OBCFA composition of Holstein dairy cow milk fats.  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) requirements are increased during lactation. Increased demand is partially met through increased Zn absorption from the diet. It is estimated that 60–80% of women of reproductive age are at risk for Zn deficiency due to low intake of bioavailable Zn and increased demands during pregnancy and lactation. How Zn is redistributed within the body to meet the demands of lactation, and how Zn deficiency affects this process, is not understood. Female C57bl/6J mice were fed a control (ZA; 30 mg Zn/kg) or a marginally Zn deficient (ZD; 15 mg Zn/kg) diet for 30 days prior to mating through mid-lactation and compared with nulliparous mice fed the same diets. While stomach and plasma Zn concentration increased during lactation in mice fed ZA, mice fed ZD had lower stomach Zn concentration and abrogated plasma Zn levels during lactation. Additionally, femur Zn decreased during lactation in mice fed ZA, while mice fed ZD did not experience this decrease. Furthermore, red blood cell, pancreas, muscle and mammary gland Zn concentration increased, and liver and adrenal gland Zn decreased during lactation, independent of diet, while kidney Zn concentration increased only in mice fed ZD. Finally, maternal Zn deficiency significantly increased the liver Zn concentration in offspring but decreased weight gain and survival. This study provides novel insight into how Zn is redistributed to meet the increased metabolic demands of lactation and how marginal Zn deficiency interferes with these homeostatic adjustments.  相似文献

Mammary epithelial cells undergo changes in growth, invasion, differentiation, and dedifferentiation throughout much of adult hood, and most strikingly during pregnancy, lactation, and involution. Clusterin is a multifunctional glycoprotein that is involved in the differentiation and morphogenesis of epithelia, and that is important in the regulation of postnatal mammary gland development. However, the mechanisms that regulate clusterin expression are still poorly understood. Here, we show that clusterin is up-regulated twice during mouse mammary gland development, a first time at the end of pregnancy and a second time at the beginning of the involution. These points of clusterin up-regulation coincide with the dramatic phenotypic and functional changes occurring in the mammary gland. Using cell culture conditions that resemble the regulatory microenvironment in vivo, we determined that the factors responsible for the first up-regulation of clusterin levels can include the extracellular matrix component, laminin, and the lactogenic hormones, prolactin and hydrocortisone. On the other hand, the second and most dramatic up-regulation of clusterin can be due to the potent induction by TGF-beta1, and this up-regulation by TGF-beta1 is dependent on beta1 integrin ligand-binding activity. Moreover, the level of expression of beta-casein, a marker of mammary epithelial cell differentiation, was decreased upon treatment of cells with clusterin siRNA. Overall, these findings reveal several novel pathways for the regulation of clusterin expression during mammary gland development, and suggest that clusterin is a morphogenic factor that plays a key role during differentiation.  相似文献

Recently, we showed that both maternal malnutrition during lactation and leptin treatment during the neonatal period program thyroid function. In this study we evaluate whether maternal leptin treatment during lactation programs thyroid function of the offspring in the adulthood. The dams were divided into 2 groups: Lep-daily sc single injected with 8 microg/100 g of body weight with recombinant rat leptin during the last 3 days of lactation and control group (C) that received the same volume of saline. The 180 day-old animals received a single i.p. injection of (125)I (2.22x10(4) Bq) and they were killed 2 h after the injection. Triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyrotropin (TSH) and leptin concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. The milk of leptin-treated mothers on the last day of treatment had higher leptin (p<0.05) concentration. The pups of the leptin-treated mothers had at 21 days an unchanged T3, T4 and leptin serum concentrations with higher TSH (p<0.05). The offspring of Lep mothers had at 180 days a higher T3 (p<0.05) with normal thyroid (125)I uptake, T4 and TSH serum concentrations compared to the controls. So, the mother's hyperleptinaemia during lactation programs to a higher T3 serum concentration on the offspring, probably by a higher leptin transfer through the milk.  相似文献

2017年10月至2018年3月采用连续记录法和焦点取样法,对上海野生动物园熊猫馆的2只雌性大熊猫在育幼期间的时间分配与活动节律进行了初步观察研究。结果表明:2个个体在育幼期间,育幼行为是最主要的行为方式,在育幼前期占90%以上。在整个育幼期间,随时间大熊猫的舔阴和育幼行为呈下降趋势,摄食、休息、活动、求适和其他行为呈上升趋势。但2个个体之间也表现出一定差异:育幼经验不足的个体("芊芊")母性强于育幼经验丰富的个体("思雪"),在育幼期不同阶段,"芊芊"用于护仔、舔仔、哺乳和母仔互动的时间均高于"思雪"。通过对上海野生动物园育幼期大熊猫行为的研究,为圈养育幼期的大熊猫饲养与管理提供科学依据。  相似文献

All female primates incur energetic costs associated with producing and caring for offspring, but females belonging to the New World primate family Callitrichidae, the marmosets and tamarins, appear to face even further demands. In fact, the energetic demands of rearing callitrichid infants are thought to have led to the evolution of cooperative infant care in these species. If this explanation is true, then one might expect that natural selection should also have shaped patterns of maternal behavior to be sensitive to the costs of reproduction and equipped females to reduce their investment in offspring under certain conditions. Therefore, we examined the maternal effort and postpartum endocrine profiles of individual female marmosets (Callithrix kuhlii) across conditions that represented two hallmarks of callitrichid reproduction-conception during the early postpartum period and alloparental assistance. When females conceived during the early postpartum period and faced the upcoming demands of caring for their newly conceived litters (Study 1), they significantly reduced their caregiving effort and had significantly higher postpartum levels of estradiol relative to breeding attempts in which conception occurred later in the postpartum period. Postpartum estradiol was negatively correlated with maternal carrying effort. When experienced alloparents were present (Study 2), females again reduced their caregiving effort relative to breeding attempts in which experienced alloparents were not present. Postpartum cortisol, however, did not vary as a function of experienced alloparental assistance. The results of these studies suggest that female marmosets have been subjected to similar selection pressures as females of other primate taxa--to maximize their reproductive success by reducing their investment in offspring under the worst and best of conditions--and suggest that hormones may mediate within-female variation in maternal care. These studies also provide support for the notion that mothers are "flexible opportunists" when it comes to providing care to their young.  相似文献

The mammary gland is subjected to major morphological and biochemical changes during the lactation cycle. It is therefore not surprising that this dynamic process is strictly controlled. The importance of the sex steroid hormones 17beta-estradiol and progesterone for normal development of the mammary gland was recognized several decades ago and has been unequivocally confirmed since. Furthermore, it is now also established that the influence of sex steroids is not restricted to mammogenesis, but that these hormones also control involution. Another important regulatory role is played by growth factors that have been shown to modulate survival (epidermal growth factor, amphiregulin, transforming growth factor alpha, insulin like growth factor, and tumor necrosis factor alpha) or apoptosis (tumor necrosis factor alpha, transforming growth factor beta) of mammary cells. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the influence of sex steroid hormones and/or growth factors on the development and function of the mammary gland remains largely unknown to date. Also scarce is information on the interaction between both groups of modulators. Nevertheless, based on the current indications compiled in this review, an important functional role for sex steroid hormones in the lactation cycle in co-operation with growth factors can be suggested.  相似文献
