Synopsis Developmental patterns as seen in cyprinodontiforms fishes with different reproductive styles are compared, and discussed
in relation to ecology and evolutionary significance. The discussion centres around Adinia xenica (its detailed ontogeny presented in two previous sequels to this paper), and, from the existing literature, Fundulus heteroclitus (closely related), Austrofundulus myersi (an annual) and Platypoecilus maculatus (a livebearer). The embryonic resting interval is present in various forms in the first three species, and differences in
it and the overall patterns of development are shown to be consistent with ecological conditions. Termination of the resting
interval leads immediately to hatching, a process in A. xenica, as in F. heteroclitus, apparently initiated by the appropriate summation of internal and external factors. These factors include any or all of:
metabolic changes and increased oxygen requirements, response to light, reduced environmental oxygen, agitation, and increased
hydrostatic pressure. They all can cause increased movement by the embryo which is credited with rupturing hatching gland
cells and releasing the enzyme(s). Annual fishes experience 3 pronounced resting intervals, termed diapauses. These are discussed
in the context of apparent steps and thresholds, and evolutionary ecology. A possible evolutionary sequence, from a simple
fractional spawning pattern to diapause, is presented. Morphological differences in primary embryonic respiratory surfaces,
as seen in the four species, are related to environmental conditions. The above illustrate ways in which the same basic structures

Synopsis Reproductive behavior of the Japanese filefish, Rudarius ercodes, was studied at the rocky reef off Koinoura, northern Kyushu, Japan, between June and October 1989. Aggressive display was observed between males, but they were not territorial. Males had four types of courtship behavior: vibrating, tail bending, leaning and nuzzle. Spawning occurred early in the morning. A female and 1–3 male(s) mated together on brown algae. Each female spawned repeatedly with an interval of 6–12 days. Females cared for eggs and embryos from just after spawning until hatching, 2–4 days. Female egg care consisted of tending and guarding. Females tended eggs by blowing water on them and by fanning them with their pectoral fins. Females guarded eggs by driving away fish passing nearby. In some cases, males also guarded eggs by staying near the eggs and driving away conspecific males. Whether a male cares for eggs with a female seems to be affected by the form of mating (pair mating or single female-multiple male mating), and the probability of further reproduction after spawning. Dominant males showed a tendency to pair with a specific female intermittently over a two-month period. Mating, however, did not always occur between members of such pairs, and mates appeared to be inter-changeable with a promiscuous mating system. 相似文献

As a result of a previous study, it appeared that hatching of eggs of Syphacia muris is activated by the application of heat (37 °C) or cysteine or trypsin but that these are not the essential stimuli. In the present study it has been established that exposure of eggs prior to hatching for several hours to 37 °C or cysteine or trypsin, or for 3 days to 22 °C, accelerated hatching. Pretreatment with 37 °C or cysteine or trypsin also increased permeability of the eggshell to water; however, it did not induce the operculum to open. The operculum opened only if the eggs, after pretreatment, were immersed in water. The larvae could leave the opened eggs only in water and not in any other medium such as paraffin oil. These data made it possible to distinguish between three stages in the hatching process. During Stage 1, the eggshell becomes permeable to water. This can be induced by dissolving the proteins of the eggshell in a trypsin solution or by stimulating the larvae with temperature or cysteine. The permeability of the eggshell is essential to successful hatching. In Stage 2, which occurs only in the presence of water, the larvae dissolve the chitinous seal between the operculum and the eggshell. In Stage 3 the larvae probably increase their size by water absorption and leave the eggs. In the discussion it has been proposed that all nematodes, both those hatching in the intestine and the species hatching in the open, could well have an identical hatching mechanism to the one observed in Syphacia muris. 相似文献

Dresden Zoo bred successfully the Malaysian giant turtle (Orlitia borneensis) in summer 2012. This was the first successful breeding of this species in Germany.Little is known about biology and behaviour of this large river turtle and keeping and especially breeding of this endangered species in captivity is a rarity. In order to create optimal breeding conditions Dresden Zoo rebuilt an enclosure for the turtles in 2010. An area with soil and sand was built for the expected egg deposition. After arranged matings one female dug a nest on this area and buried her eggs. Nine eggs were secured and transferred into an incubator in a box filled with a 1:1 mixture of vermiculite and water. The average temperature was 29 °C. After problems with the temperature regulation the damaged incubator had to be replaced. Because of an estimated incubation period of 3–4 months, one egg was opened on day 127 of incubation. A live hatchling with a big yolk sac was fetched. Because of the non-reabsorbed yolk sac the hatchling was further incubated. On day 154 of incubation all eggs were manually opened and the hatchlings were fetched. All of these hatchlings showed a non-reabsorbed yolk sac and were incubated onwards in a box with wet paper towel until the yolk sac was completely reabsorbed. After that the hatchlings were housed solitarily in a box with water of approximately 4 cm height and a small land area. Two days after housing food was offered for the first time. All hatchlings accepted the offered food consisting of herbal as well as of animal products and later turtle pellets and self-made turtle jelly.Though little is known about breeding this species, the breeding success of Dresden Zoo demonstrates a possible approach to this topic. But there are still things to optimize. For example the manual hatching is something that should be avoided in future. The cryopreservation of mammalian embryos is an important technology in embryo engineering. The discovery and application of the embryo's own high freezing resistance factors are the main methods to improve the utilization of mammalian embryos in cryopreservation. Cathepsin L gene expression in the frozen and thawed dormant embryos displayed a significant difference from those normal hatched ones. The aim of the present study was to dig out the potential role of Cathepsin L in anti-freezing capacity of murine blastocysts by investigating the location and expression of Cathepsin L in frozen and thawed both activated and dormant hatching blastocysts. Different concentrations of Cathepsin L recombinant protein and E-64d were then respectively added into the embryo cryoprotectant and pre-cryo culture medium. Our results found that down-regulation of Cathepsin L improves the freezing resistance of murine normal hatching embryos by reducing apoptosis. Cathepsin L inhibitors can be used to improve the efficiency of cryopreservation and recovery of blastocysts in vitro. Risk-sensitive hatching is adaptive for species facing a trade-off between egg-stage and post-hatching risks, and environmental
variation in one or both stages. Such plasticity has been found in amphibians, fishes, reptiles and spiders, with red-eyed
treefrogs (Agalychnis callidryas) being the best-studied case. We assessed hatching plasticity and egg- and larval-stage risks in a closely related, syntopic
species, the gliding leaf-frog (Agalychnis spurrelli). We found a lower hatching response to egg-eating snakes in A. spurrelli (9–28% of embryos escaped) than in A. callidryas (59–80% escaped). Levels of snake predation were similarly high for clutches of both species monitored at a pond in Costa
Rica, and in fish predation experiments early-hatched A. spurrelli tadpoles were more vulnerable than later hatchlings, as has been shown for A. callidryas. A. spurrelli thus face a risk trade-off similar to A. callidryas, and likely would benefit from predator-induced hatching; their lower responsiveness to snakes appears nonadaptive. A. spurrelli embryos showed a stronger hatching response (57% hatched in 1 h) to submergence underwater than to snake attacks even though
submergence is a less frequent risk. This suggests they have a greater capacity for early hatching than is expressed in the
context of snake attacks, but have much lower sensitivity to snake cues than to flooding cues. Development in A. spurrelli is accelerated compared to syntopic A. callidryas, and spontaneous hatching is earlier and more synchronous. This is congruent with predictions based on selection by egg predators

作者用蜡皮蜥(Leiolepis reevesii)为模型动物,检验产卵于温暖且热稳定巢内的蜥蜴应有相对较高但较窄的孵化温度的假设。卵在三个恒定温度(27、30和33℃)、一个波动温度处理下孵化。温度的平均值而非方差影响孵化期,27、30和33℃的平均孵化期分别为101.1、69.6和55.3d。幼体性别不受孵化温度影响。不同处理孵出的幼体仅有稍许形态差异,但运动表现差异显著。27℃孵出幼体在跑道上的表现比其它处理孵出幼体差。卵能在27℃和33℃下孵化,但这两个孵化温度并不适宜。蜡皮蜥适宜的孵化温度范围可能处于最频繁的巢温变化范围(28℃-32℃)内。与其它在低温生境或温暖生境但产卵于浅巢的有鳞类爬行动物相比较,蜡皮蜥有相对较高但较窄适宜的卵孵化温度。因此,作者的数据支持上述假设。 相似文献
