Natural incorporation of mercury in bone

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element that causes bone defects and malformations. Structure and surface analyses using quantitative x-ray diffraction using the Rietveld method, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and nanodiffraction analyses, and Fourier-Transformed Infrared spectroscopy showed that bone enriched naturally with Hg (≤ 2.3 %) contained Hg₃PO₄ [(Hg₂)₃(PO₄)₂] and HgO. Bone [mostly as apatite, verified as carboxyapatite Ca₁₀(PO₄)₄(CO₃)₃(OH)₂(s)] and cinnabar (HgS) dissolved releasing Hg⁺ (existing as dimer Hg₂²⁺) and PO₄³⁻, both of which became immobilized as (Hg₂)₃(PO₄)₂. Besides, released Hg²⁺ became oxidized to form HgO. The outcome of this work is novel, provided that only a handful of stable compounds of Hg₂²⁺ are found in nature.     

NdhO,a Subunit of NADPH Dehydrogenase,Destabilizes Medium Size Complex of the Enzyme in Synechocystis sp. Strain PCC 6803

Two mutants that grew faster than the wild-type (WT) strain under high light conditions were isolated from Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 transformed with a transposon-bearing library. Both mutants had a tag in ssl1690 encoding NdhO. Deletion of ndhO increased the activity of NADPH dehydrogenase (NDH-1)-dependent cyclic electron transport around photosystem I (NDH-CET), while overexpression decreased the activity. Although deletion and overexpression of ndhO did not have significant effects on the amount of other subunits such as NdhH, NdhI, NdhK, and NdhM in the cells, the amount of these subunits in the medium size NDH-1 (NDH-1M) complex was higher in the ndhO-deletion mutant and much lower in the overexpression strain than in the WT. NdhO strongly interacts with NdhI and NdhK but not with other subunits. NdhI interacts with NdhK and the interaction was blocked by NdhO. The blocking may destabilize the NDH-1M complex and repress the NDH-CET activity. When cells were transferred from growth light to high light, the amounts of NdhI and NdhK increased without significant change in the amount of NdhO, thus decreasing the relative amount of NdhO. This might have decreased the blocking, thereby stabilizing the NDH-1M complex and increasing the NDH-CET activity under high light conditions.

油梨果实的生长和内含物变化的观察

本文报道对油梨果实的生长及内含物的变化的观察结果．果实生长发育过程中,以６—７份生长最快,干物质及脂肪含量由低到高变化,以１１月份增加最快,蛋白质含量由高到低递诚．１１月份后含量相对稳定,总糖和维生素Ｃ含量随果实的发育程度而下降。

描述了Ｃａｌｙｍｅｎｅｓｕｎ ｇｒａｎｕｌｏｓａ Ｌｕ的腹边缘及结合构造,并讨论了此种三叶虫的卷曲机制。认为当其卷曲完善时,尾“边缘“及部分胸肋纳入头颊下,以往描述了尾边缘的部分实际上是尾背结合沟所在位置。卷曲形式为半螺旋卷曲。     

Bisphenol S induces oxidative stress-mediated impairment of testosterone synthesis by inhibiting the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway

Bisphenol S (BPS) is an environmental endocrine disruptor widely used in industrial production. BPS induces oxidative stress and exhibits male reproductive toxicity in mice, but the mechanisms by which BPS impairs steroid hormone synthesis are not fully understood. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)/HO-1 signaling is a key pathway in improving cellular antioxidant defense capacities. Therefore, this study explored the effects of exposure to BPS on testosterone synthesis in adult male mice and its mechanisms with regard to the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Adult male C57BL/6 mice were orally exposed to BPS (2, 20, and 200 mg/kg BW) with sesame oil as a vehicle (0.1 ml/10 g BW) per day for 28 consecutive days. The results showed that compared with the control group, serum testosterone levels were substantially reduced in the 20 and 200 mg/kg BPS treatment groups, and testicular testosterone levels were reduced in all BPS treatment groups. These changes were accompanied by a prominent decrease in the expression levels of testosterone synthesis-related enzymes (STAR, CYP11A1, CYP17A1, HSD3B1, and HSD17B3) in the mouse testis. In addition, BPS induced oxidative stress in the testis by upregulating the messenger RNA and protein levels of Keap1 and downregulating the levels of Nrf2, HO-1, and downstream antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD1, and Gpx4). In summary, our results indicate that exposure of adult male mice to BPS can inhibit Nrf2/HO-1 signaling and antioxidant enzyme activity, which induces oxidative stress and thereby may impair testosterone synthesis in testicular tissues, leading to reproductive damage.     

Searching by parts: Towards fine-grained image retrieval respecting species correlation

Most of the existing works on fine-grained image categorization and retrieval focus on finding similar images from the same species and often give little importance to inter-species similarities. However, these similarities may carry species correlations such as the same ancestors or similar habits, which are helpful in taxonomy and understanding biological traits. In this paper, we devise a new fine-grained retrieval task that searches for similar instances from different species based on body parts. To this end, we propose a two-step strategy. In the first step, we search for visually similar parts to a query image using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). To improve the quality of the retrieved candidates, structural cues are introduced into the CNN using a novel part-pooling layer, in which the receptive field of each part is adjusted automatically. In the second step, we re-rank the retrieved candidates to improve the species diversity. We achieve this by formulating a novel ranking function that balances between the similarity of the candidates to the queried parts, while decreasing the similarity to the query species. We provide experiments on the benchmark CUB200 dataset and Columbia Dogs dataset, and demonstrate clear benefits of our schemes.     

北部湾鱼类碳、氮、磷生态化学计量特征

为探究北部湾鱼类生态化学计量特征,于2021年3月—4月采集分析了北部湾沿岸9个渔港的79种鱼类(382尾)碳(C)、氮(N)、磷(P)含量特征。结果表明北部湾鱼类C、N、P元素含量变化范围分别为33.87%—58.34%、6.31%—14.92%和0.77%—4.67%;C∶N、C∶P、N∶P的变化范围分别为3.43—9.72、19.15—173.06和5.04—33.68,其中P元素含量变化最大,导致C∶P和N∶P的变化。不同物种在科间的差异较大,科内的差异较小。不同体型和食性鱼类之间的C、N、P含量及比值具有显著差异(P<0.05)。鱼类的C∶P和N∶P与P含量呈显著负相关(R²=0.966,P<0.01;R²=0.877,P<0.01),P含量和Ca含量呈显著正相关(R²=0.919,P<0.01),P含量的变化可能与鱼类骨骼和鳞片的形成有关。总之,北部湾鱼类未保持严格的生态化学计量平衡,鱼类生态化学计量特征存在显著的种间差异,主要因鱼类不同的体型和食性差异所致。
