In response to suboptimal temperatures, temperate annual plants often increase root:shoot ratios, build-up carbohydrates and display typical morphological and anatomical changes. We know less about the responses of biennials such as carrot. As a model plant, carrot has the additional feature of two functionally and morphologically distinct root parts: the taproot, which stores carbohydrate and other compounds, and the fibrous root system involved in acquisition of water and nutrients. Here, we analyze the effects of temperature (12 vs 25°C) on growth, carbohydrate accumulation and whole-plant morphology in two carrot cultivars. Our working hypothesis is that suboptimal temperature favors active formation of reserve structures, rather than passive accumulation of storage carbohydrates. In comparison with plants grown at 25°C, plants grown at 12°C had: (1) higher fibrous root:shoot ratio (13%) , (2) thicker (10–15%) and smaller (up to two- to three-fold) leaves, (3) lower leaf cuticular permeance (two- to four-fold), (4) higher taproot:shoot ratio (two-fold), (5) higher phloem:xylem ratios in taproot (two- to six-fold), (6) unchanged percentage dry matter content (%DMC) in leaves, petioles or fibrous roots and (7) higher %DMC in taproot (20%). However, %DMC of individual taproot tissues (phloem and xylem) was unaffected by temperatures and was consistently higher in the phloem (up to 30%). Therefore, the higher %DMC of whole taproots at 12°C was attributed solely to the increased development of phloem tissue. Carrot, therefore, shares many of the most conspicuous elements of temperate plant responses to low temperatures. Consistently with our hypothesis, however, carrots grown at suboptimal temperature promoted reserve structures, rather than the increase in carbohydrate concentration typical of most temperate annual species and woody perennials. 相似文献

Effects of changing light conditions on the ecophysiological condition behind survival were examined on beech from two different
populations. Plants were grown in a greenhouse under simulated understorey and canopy gap light conditions. Upon exposure
to high light maximum photosynthesis of shade-acclimated leaves increased followed by a reduction over several days to between
high- and low-light control rates. In the reciprocal transfer, the decrease in maximum photosynthesis was rapid during the
first 2–3 days and then levelled off to values comparable to low-light controls. Seedlings from Sicily (Madonie) showed generally
higher maximum photosynthetic rates than those from Abetone. Leaf conductance varied in the same direction as photosynthesis
in high- to low-light seedlings but to a lesser degree. Leaves grown under low light and exposed to high light experienced
photoinhibition. The Abetone population was more susceptible to photoinhibitory damage than the seedlings from Sicily. Exposure
to high light of shade-acclimated seedlings resulted in intermediate chlorophyll concentrations between levels of the high-light
and low-light seedlings. Carotenoid concentration was unaffected by treatments. Seedlings grew more in high light, but had
a lower leaf area ratio. Light-limited seedlings showed a shift in carbon allocation to foliage. Leaves formed in the new
light regime maintained the same anatomy that had been developed before transfer. Seedlings from Sicily had thicker leaves
than those of seedlings from Abetone. Seedlings from Abetone were found to be more susceptible to changing light conditions
than seedlings from Sicily. We conclude that small forest gaps may represent a favorable environment for photosynthesis and
growth of beech regeneration as a result of the limited ability of seedlings to acclimate to sudden increases in high irradiance
and because of the moderate levels of light stress in small gaps.

With the aim to examine their potentials as renewable resources to decontaminate polluted soils, growth, photosynthesis and nitrogen balance were analyzed in two poplar species (Populus x canadensis, Adda clone and Populus alba, Villafranca clone) to investigate the tolerance to high copper (Cu) concentrations. The two clones showed different responses to Cu in terms of tolerance and metal allocation: P. x canadensis accumulated Cu in roots, displaying features sought in plants suitable for phytostabilization, while P. alba accumulated the metal in leaves, like an indicator species. 相似文献

To face summer drought and wildfire in Mediterranean-type ecosystems, plants adopt different strategies that involve considerable rearrangements of biomass allocation and physiological activity. This paper analyses morphological and physiological traits in seedlings of three oak species (Quercus ilex, Quercus trojana and Quercus virgiliana) co-occurring under natural conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate species-specific characteristics and the response of these oak seedlings to drought stress and fire treatment. Seedlings were kept in a growth chamber that mimicked natural environmental conditions. All three species showed a good degree of tolerance to drought and fire treatments. Differences in specific biomass allocation patterns and physiological traits resulted in phenotypic differences between species. In Q. ilex, drought tolerance depended upon adjustment of the allocation pattern. Q. trojana seedlings undergoing mild to severe drought presented a higher photosystem II (PSII) efficiency than control seedlings. Moreover, Q. trojana showed a very large root system, which corresponded to higher soil area exploitation, and bigger leaf midrib vascular bundles than the other two species. Morphological and physiological performances indicated Q. trojana as the most tolerant to drought and fire. These characteristics contribute to a high recruitment potential of Q. trojana seedlings, which might be the reason for the dominance of this species under natural conditions. Drought increase as a result of climate change is expected to favour Q. trojana, leading to an increase in its spatial distribution. 相似文献

In this paper, we study the protonation of pyridine and phosphinine derivatives. In particular, the geometries, the amount of charge transfer, and the nature of the created N-H and P-H bonds are discussed, underlying the fundamental differences between the phosphorus and the nitrogen atoms as proton acceptors. Conceptual density functional theory and Bader’s quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules are notably used to rationalize these trends and to predict the overall energies of these prototype gas-phase acid–base reactions. 相似文献

Ferredoxin-NADP(H) reductase (FNR) catalyzes the last step of photosynthetic electron transport in chloroplasts, driving electrons from reduced ferredoxin to NADP+. This reaction is rate limiting for photosynthesis under a wide range of illumination conditions, as revealed by analysis of plants transformed with an antisense version of the FNR gene. To investigate whether accumulation of this flavoprotein over wild-type levels could improve photosynthetic efficiency and growth, we generated transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants expressing a pea (Pisum sativum) FNR targeted to chloroplasts. The alien product distributed between the thylakoid membranes and the chloroplast stroma. Transformants grown at 150 or 700 micromol quanta m(-2) s(-1) displayed wild-type phenotypes regardless of FNR content. Thylakoids isolated from plants with a 5-fold FNR increase over the wild type displayed only moderate stimulation (approximately 20%) in the rates of electron transport from water to NADP+. In contrast, when donors of photosystem I were used to drive NADP+ photoreduction, the activity was 3- to 4-fold higher than the wild-type controls. Plants expressing various levels of FNR (from 1- to 3.6-fold over the wild type) failed to show significant differences in CO2 assimilation rates when assayed over a range of light intensities and CO2 concentrations. Transgenic lines exhibited enhanced tolerance to photooxidative damage and redox-cycling herbicides that propagate reactive oxygen species. The results suggest that photosynthetic electron transport has several rate-limiting steps, with FNR catalyzing just one of them. 相似文献

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is becoming a matter of great global concern. The identification of plants differentially sensitive to Cd excess is of interest for the selection of genotype adaptive to grow and develop in polluted areas and capable of ameliorating or reducing the negative environmental effects of this toxic metal. The two poplar clones I-214 (Populus × canadensis) and Eridano (Populus deltoides × maximowiczii) are, respectively, tolerant and sensitive to ozone (O3) exposure. Because stress tolerance is mediated by an array of overlapping defence mechanisms, we tested the hypothesis that these two clones differently sensitive to O3 stress factor also exhibit different tolerance to Cd. With this purpose, an outdoor pot experiment was designed to study the responses of I-214 and Eridano to the distribution of different Cd solutions enriched with CdCl2 (0, 50 and 150 μM) for 35 days. Changes in leaf area, biomass allocation and Cd uptake, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf concentration of nutrients and pigments, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) production and thiol compounds were investigated. The two poplar clones showed similar sensitivity to excess Cd in terms of biomass production, photosynthesis activity and Cd accumulation, though physiological and biochemical traits revealed different defence strategies. In particular, Eridano maintained in any Cd treatment the number of its constitutively wider blade leaves, while the number of I-214 leaves (with lower size) was reduced. H2O2 increased 4.5- and 13-fold in I-214 leaves after the lowest (L) and highest (H) Cd treatments, respectively, revealing the induction of oxidative burst. NO, constitutively higher in I-214 than Eridano, progressively increased in both clones with the enhancement of Cd concentration in the substrate. I-214 showed a more elevated antioxidative capacity (GSH/GSSG) and higher photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and de-epoxidation degree of xantophylls-cycle (DEPS). The glutathione pool was not affected by Cd treatment in both clones, while non-protein thiols and phytochelatins were reduced at L Cd treatment in I-214. Overall, these two clones presented high adaptability to Cd stress and are both suitable to develop and growth in environments contaminated with this metal, thus being promising for their potential use in phytoremediation programmes. 相似文献

Several morphological, anatomical and physiological changesand their relationship with differential root vs. shoot growthinhibition at low temperature (5°C) were studied in springand winter wheat cultivars. Root:shoot ratios, expressed eitheras a function of root and shoot fresh weight or as a functionof root and leaf areas, increased at low temperature and thisincrement was more pronounced in spring cultivars than in winterones. Although winter cultivars developed relatively smallerroot systems at 5°C, this characteristic was counterbalancedby a lower stomatal frequency and increased thickness of epidermalcell walls in leaves unfolded at this temperature, relativeto spring cultivars. Likewise, at 5°C a decrease in theosmotic potential of shoots and roots was observed in parallelwith sugar accumulation; this decrease was more marked in wintercultivars. These results indicate a differential morpho-anatomicaland physiological plasticity of winter and spring cultivarsduring development at low temperature. The possible associationbetween these changes and plant water economy at low temperaturesis discussed. Despite growing interest in predicting plant phenological shifts, advanced spring phenology by global climate change remains debated. Evidence documenting either small or large advancement of spring phenology to rising temperature over the spatio-temporal scales implies a potential existence of a thermal threshold in the responses of forests to global warming. We collected a unique data set of xylem cell-wall-thickening onset dates in 20 coniferous species covering a broad mean annual temperature (MAT) gradient (−3.05 to 22.9°C) across the Northern Hemisphere (latitudes 23°–66° N). Along the MAT gradient, we identified a threshold temperature (using segmented regression) of 4.9 ± 1.1°C, above which the response of xylem phenology to rising temperatures significantly decline. This threshold separates the Northern Hemisphere conifers into cold and warm thermal niches, with MAT and spring forcing being the primary drivers for the onset dates (estimated by linear and Bayesian mixed-effect models), respectively. The identified thermal threshold should be integrated into the Earth-System-Models for a better understanding of spring phenology in response to global warming and an improved prediction of global climate-carbon feedbacks. 相似文献
