Sexual systems of 139 tree species from a tropical rain forest at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico were investigated to: 1) estimate the relative proportions of hermaphroditic, monoecious, and dioecious species; 2) describe flowers, fruits, and seeds in terms of size and weight; 3) describe flowering and fruiting phenology; and 4) correlate sexuality to pollination and dispersal syndromes, and the successional status occupied in the forest. Hermaphroditism occurred in 63% of the species, monoecism in 9%, and dioecy in 27%. Nondioecious species had larger flowers, but dioecious species had more seeds per fruit. The dioecious condition was associated with small flowers pollinated with unspecialized insects and fleshy fruits dispersed by animals at both species and generic levels. Reproductive traits were more correlated among nondioecious species than dioecious species. Pioneer species had more seeds per fruit, and longer flowering and fruiting periods, but persistent species produced heavier seeds and fruits. Flower and fruit morphological traits, sexual systems, and tree guilds are related in a comprehensive way, and a flow model based on data from this study is presented.  相似文献

载脂蛋白E(ApoE)与迟发的家族性及孤发性阿尔茨海默(Alzheimer)病密切相关. 氯喹慢性中毒可诱发某些肌病理改变, 出现β淀粉样蛋白(βAP)与tau蛋白等的沉积, 与Alzheimer脑中见到的病理改变类似. 为分析这一改变的机制, 用逆转录结合多聚酶链反应技术(RT-PCR)对氯喹处理的大鼠肌肉中ApoE表达的改变进行了研究. 在PCR定量中采用了一种稳定表达的内源性甘油醛-3-磷酸脱氢酶mRNA作为内部参照. PCR扩增在很宽的循环数范围内成线性, 且靶mRNA与参照mRNA的扩增效率相当. 氯喹处理后大鼠肌肉中ApoE mRNA的表达从第6周开始增加, 第8周后超过对照组的20多倍. 结果提示, ApoE在氯喹慢性中毒所致的大鼠肌病理改变中发挥某些作用.  相似文献

Catfish pancreatic somatostatin, which contains eight additional amino acids on the amino terminus of a tetradecapeptide with considerable homology to tetradecapeptide somatostatin (SRIF), is a naturally occurring homology of the hypothalamic peptide. The purpose of these studies was to determibe the biological activity of this somatostatin homolog. Inhibition of 125I-labelled tyr1-SRIF binding to bovine pituitart plasma membranes by catfish pancreatic somatostatin was approximately 33% that of SRIF. Pancreatic somatostatin has full biological activity measured by inhibition of growth hormone release from isolated rat pituitary cells, but 0.01–0.1% the potency of SRIF. Pancreatic somatostatin at 100 ng/ml produced a 50–60% inhibition of insulin and glucagon secretion from perfused rat pancreas, while SRIF produced comparable inhibition at 10 ng/ml. This report demonstrates that a larger molecular form and natural homolog of SRIF, isolated from fish pancreas, has the same (but reduced) biological activities in rat assay systems as somatostatin originally isolated from sheep hypothalamus.  相似文献

Gas compositional changes in the headspace of the Viking Biology Gas Exchange Experiment can originate from biological activity as well as redox chamical reactions, sorption and desorption phenomena, acid-base reactions, and trapped gas release. Biological phenomena are differentiated from the nonbiological gas changes by their dynamical qualities, notably by the ability of the M4 medium to sustain biological activity. Medium incompatibilities, with potential microbial types in soils, are demonstrated to be ameliorated by an incubation chamber design that provides thin films of medium around particulate soil masses and salt gradients when the soil is wet from below. Two phenomena in soils, the production and consumption of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, are coupled for a newly isolatedClostridium sp. A decrease in molecular nitrogen production by denitrifying organisms in the second and subsequent incubation cycles results from competitive nitrate utilization by anaerobic organisms. All soils tested from the cold, dry desert regions of Antarctica contain predominantly aerobic organisms while only six of the twelve soils respire using nitrate under anaerobic conditions. Although dry Antarctica soils are not the best simulations of Martian anoxic conditions, their responses show that long incubation times may be needed on Mars to demonstrate biological gas change phenomena.  相似文献

Catechinopyranocyanidins A and B (cpcA and cpcB) are two purple pigments present in the seed-coat of red adzuki bean, Vigna angularis, of which cpcA is the major pigment, containing two chiral carbons in the catechin part. Their absolute configurations were determined by comparison of their experimental and quantum chemical calculated electronic circular dichroisms (ECDs). These purple pigments are labile on light irradiation and easily decompose to photo-degraded catechinopyranocyanidins A and B (pdcpcA and pdcpcB), while retaining the stereostructure of the catechin residue. We applied modified Mosher's method for determining the chirality of the secondary alcohol in pdcpcA. Hexamethylation of pdcpcA by diazomethane followed by esterification using (S)- and (R)-MTPACl gave (R)- and (S)-MTPA esters, respectively. By analysis of the NMR spectra of (R)- and (S)-MTPA esters of tetramethylated (+)-catechin, the chirality of pdcpcA was determined to be 2R, 3S, same as the absolute configuration of cpcA.  相似文献

Acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase) has been shown to be associated with asthma in mouse models, allergic inflammation and food processing. Here, we describe an E. coli-expression system that allows for the periplasmic production of active AMCase fused to Protein A at the N-terminus and V5 epitope and (His)6 tag (V5-His) at the C-terminus (Protein A-AMCase-V5-His) in E. coli. The mouse AMCase cDNA was cloned into the vector pEZZ18, which is an expression vector containing the Staphylococcus Protein A promoter, with the signal sequence and truncated form of Protein A for extracellular expression in E. coli. Most of the Protein A-AMCase-V5-His was present in the periplasmic space with chitinolytic activity, which was measured using a chromogenic substrate, 4-nitrophenyl N,N′-diacetyl-β-D-chitobioside. The Protein A-AMCase-V5-His was purified from periplasmic fractions using an IgG Sepharose column followed by a Ni Sepharose chromatography. The recombinant protein showed a robust peak of activity with a maximum observed activity at pH 2.0, where an optimal temperature was 54°C. When this protein was preincubated between pH 1.0 and pH 11.0 on ice for 1 h, full chitinolytic activity was retained. This protein was also heat-stable till 54°C, both at pH 2.0 and 7.0. The chitinolytic activity of the recombinant AMCase against 4-nitrophenyl N,N′-diacetyl-β-D-chitobioside was comparable to the CHO-expressed AMCase. Furthermore, the recombinant AMCase bound to chitin beads, cleaved colloidal chitin and released mainly N,N′-diacetylchitobiose fragments. Thus, the E. coli-expressed Protein A-mouse AMCase-V5-His fusion protein possesses chitinase functions comparable to the CHO-expressed AMCase. This recombinant protein can be used to elucidate detailed biomedical functions of the mouse AMCase.  相似文献

Two novel flavonoids, named meliflavones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the leaves of Melicope triphylla (Lam.) Merr., along with thirteen known compounds (315). Four of the polymethoxyflavonoids bearing a prenyloxy (3-methylbut-2-enyloxy) function (1, 35) induced the expression of extracellular-superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) in a human leukemic U937 cell-based assay.  相似文献
