Over the past decade the number of families in London who were considered officially to be homeless appreciably increased. In response to this many families have been given temporary accommodation, usually in bed and breakfast hotels, while awaiting permanent rehousing. About 200 of the roughly 600 hotels in London that provide such accommodation are located in the area of the former Paddington and North Kensington Health Authority, now part of Parkside Health Authority. The use made by the homeless population of hospital services was studied by finding out the numbers of inpatients admitted to hospital and the numbers presenting to the walk in paediatric clinic and the casualty department at one hospital. These figures were compared with those for local residents and the overall workload. The bed and breakfast population were high users of inpatient beds, the casualty department, and the paediatric clinic. Overall, about one tenth of the beds were used by these people. The health authority receives no additional funding for this group of patients. Further research is needed to find out if the high use of hospital services made by these patients reflects their increased morbidity or their inability to obtain primary care services. 相似文献

District health authorities have been instructed to operate a cervical cytology call and recall screening programme using the age-sex registers held by family practitioner committees. A detailed evaluation of implementation in an inner London district showed that 477 out of 687 (69%) invitation letters sent to women by the family practitioner committee were either inaccurate or inappropriate: almost half of the recorded addresses were incorrect and a further fifth of the women were not eligible for a test. Overall, 90 women had a smear, which is only 13% of the total but 43% of those found to be eligible. The findings did not differ significantly with age. The findings have major implications not only for the effectiveness of call and recall for screening for cervical cancer but also for the future development of screening for breast cancer in such areas. 相似文献

本文报道药用植物菘蓝(Isatis indigotica Foft.)同源四倍体的诱发、鉴定、选育的研究。用0.05-0.5%浓度的秋水仙碱水溶液处理萌发的种子,或用0.05-0.3%浓度的此溶液处理幼苗的生长点,均可以获得四倍体植株。最适宜的处理时间为6-12小时。除用直接的细胞学技术鉴定多倍体植株外,一些重要的间接鉴定特征,如叶表皮保卫细胞中叶绿体数,花粉沟数可作为鉴定本种多倍体植株的可靠指标。比较了四倍体植株和二倍体亲本的生物学特性。经过数代选育,获得了性状稳定、繁殖力正常、根与叶中活性成分均有较大幅度提高、生产性能良好的品系。 相似文献

武汉东湖的鲢(Hypophthalmichthy molitrix)鳙(Aristichthys nobilis)在天然条件下摄食强度具季节性变化。摄食强度高峰处于夏季,低谷处于冬季。在实验条件下,按周年采样期间水温变化范围,测定鱼的肠管排空率。食物通过鱼肠管时间(Y_p—h)与水温(X_t—℃)的关系为: 鲢Y_p=270.63 X_t~(0.6408) 鳙Y_p=280.46 X_t~(0.6642) 根据修正后Bajkov公式(D=C (24.A)/n),估算鱼的日粮。鱼日粮(Y_D)与水温(X_t)关系为: 鲢Y_D=0.2683e~(0.1503X_t) 鳙Y_D=0.0075X_t~(2.2715) 计算鱼在天然条件下周年月粮及年粮。鲢、鳙对天然饵料年消耗量分别为18.924公斤及17.39公斤,饵料系数分别为18.02及13.38。 相似文献

Characterization and purification of membrane-associated phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate kinase from human red blood cells 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The membrane-bound form of phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PtdInsP) kinase was purified 4,300-fold from human red blood cells to a specific activity of 117 nmol min-1 mg-1. Although this enzyme copurified with red blood cell membranes, it was solubilized by high salt extraction in the absence of detergent indicating that it is a peripheral membrane protein. The major protein seen in the most purified preparation migrated at 53,000 daltons on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The major PtdInsP kinase activity in this preparation was also coincident with this 53,000-dalton band upon renaturation of activity from SDS-PAGE. To test further whether the 53,000-dalton protein contained PtdInsP kinase activity, antibodies were prepared against the gel-purified 53,000-dalton protein. This antiserum was able to precipitate both the 53,000-dalton peptide and PtdInsP kinase activity from red blood cell membranes. The apparent size of the native enzyme in the most purified preparation was determined to be 150,000 +/- 25,000 daltons by gel filtration. This PtdInsP kinase activity was at least 100-fold more active in phosphorylating PtdInsP than phosphatidylinositol and was easily separated from the red cell membrane phosphatidylinositol kinase by salt extraction. Analysis of the reaction product, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, indicates that the enzyme phosphorylates phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate specifically at the 5'-hydroxyl of the inositol ring. The apparent Km for ATP was 2 microM, and the concentrations of Mg2+ and Mn2+ giving half-maximal activity were 2 and 0.2 mM, respectively. Mg2+ supported 3-fold higher activity than Mn2+ at optimal concentrations. The enzymatic activity was inhibited by its product, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate and enhanced by phosphatidylserine. 相似文献

Different parts of the rice (Oryza sativa L.) plant at different growth stages were analyzed for sucrose synthase (SS) by enzyme activity assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay directly on the extracts or on the eluates from a gel filtration column. On a dry matter basis, the amount of soluble protein and SS activity decreased significantly, but the amount of enzyme protein changed little in growing leaves. In the grain, the SS activity was the highest at the early ripening stage and decreased later, but the amount of SS protein increased with the increase in maturity. In the root, a low activity of SS was detectable only in the tillering but not in other stages. Immunoblotting of SS protein extracted from different parts of rice showed two bands. Elution patterns of crude extracts from a gel filtration column showed the presence of several types of SS protein. Among them, two to three types with larger elution volumes had the SS activity but others with smaller elution volumes (considered as the aggregated forms) had no activity. The SS purified from different parts of the plant showed similar but distinctly different electrophoretic mobilities in a native gel. Treating opiate-dependent patients can be difficult for many physicians because the patients'' life-styles, values, and beliefs differ from those of the physicians. Primary care physicians, however, are often involved in the treatment of the medical complications of opiate abuse, and physicians must often manage a patient''s opiate dependence until appropriate referral to a drug abuse treatment program can be arranged. Treatment is guided by an understanding of the patient''s addictive disease, for which there are specific diagnostic criteria, and an understanding of the pharmacology of opiates of abuse and the medications used in treating opiate dependence. The opiate agonist, methadone, is useful for both detoxification and maintenance. The opiate antagonist, naloxone, is the treatment of choice for opiate overdose, and naltrexone, also an opiate antagonist, is a useful adjunct in subgroups of opiate-dependent patients for preventing relapse. An adenosine-assimilating bacterium, Klebsiella sp. strain LF1202, inducibly formed a novel nucleoside phosphorylase which acted on both purine and pyrimidine nucleosides when the cells were cultured in medium containing adenosine as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen. The enzyme was purified (approximately 83-fold, with a 17% activity yield) to the homogeneous state by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was calculated to be 125,000 by gel filtration of Sephadex G-200 column chromatography, although the enzyme migrated as a single protein band with a molecular weight of 25,000 on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; thus, it was thought to consist of five identical subunits. Besides purine nucleosides (adenosine, inosine, and guanosine), the purified enzyme also acted on pyrimidine nucleosides such as uridine, 2'-deoxyuridine, and thymidine. Agave tequilana stem explants were used to produce adventitious shoots under a set of different water potentials induced by different concentrations of gelrite in the medium. At high water potentials all shoots were vitrified; as the medium water potential became more negative the degree of vitrification decreased but the number of shoots per explant also diminished. The enzymes NADH and NAD-GDH (EC. 1.4.1.2) were measured along the water potential gradient.
