In group-living species, a dominant male's ability to monopolize reproduction, and the cost of doing so, are expected to vary with a group's gender composition. We used spawning observations of a group-living cichlid, Neolamprologus pulcher , to test this expectation. We constructed groups that contained a dominant breeding pair and either two male subordinates, one male and one female subordinate or two female subordinates. Parasitic spawning by male subordinates was more common in groups with two male subordinates than in groups with one male and one female subordinate. Female subordinates were never observed laying eggs in dominant females' clutches, but three female subordinates laid independent clutches. During spawning, frequencies of dominant male aggression towards male and female subordinates were similar. Dominant males were less aggressive during non-reproductive periods. The declines were greater for female subordinates, such that, during non-reproductive periods, dominant males were more aggressive towards male subordinates. Aggression towards each subordinate was also affected by the second subordinate's gender; the direction of that effect differed for large and small subordinates. Male subordinates approached breeding shelters less often than female subordinates, and both male and female subordinates approached shelters more frequently when the second subordinate was male. Collectively, these patterns suggest: (1) that male subordinates impose higher costs on dominant males than female subordinates do and (2) that the presence of a second male subordinate imposes additional costs beyond those of the first male subordinate. We discuss the implications of these effects for dominant and subordinate group members.  相似文献

Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS) is characterized by genome instability and cancer predisposition. NBS patients contain a mutation in the NBS1 gene, which encodes the NBS1 component of the DNA double-strand break (DSB) response complex MRE11/RAD50/NBS1. To investigate the NBS phenotype in more detail, we combined the mouse mimic of the most common patient mutation (Nbs1ΔB/ΔB) with a Rad54 null mutation, which diminishes homologous recombination. Double mutant cells were particularly sensitive to treatments that cause single strand breaks (SSBs), presumably because these SSBs can be converted into detrimental DSBs upon passage of a replication fork. The persistent presence of nuclear RAD51 foci and increased levels of chromatid type breaks in metaphase spreads indicated that replication-associated DSBs are repaired inefficiently in the double mutant cells. We conclude that Nbs1 and Rad54 function cooperatively, but in separate pathways to counteract this type of DNA damage and discuss mechanistic implications of these findings.  相似文献

The effect of group size on reproductive success has long been studied in cooperatively breeding species, as it might provide an adaptive explanation for group‐living in social species. Numerous studies have shown positive effects of subordinates on reproductive success (‘helper effect’), but these studies have also revealed the importance of controlling statistically, or experimentally, for the effect of other factors that might affect reproductive success. Here, we first examine the relationships between group size, body size of group members and nest size in the cooperatively breeding cichlid Julidochromis ornatus, in which unrelated helpers frequently participate in reproduction and their breeding nests inside rock crevices may be crucial for reproduction and survival of all group members. Then, we subsequently investigate the relationship between group size and reproductive success, while controlling for these factors. The results showed that group size was significantly related to body size of group members rather than nest size; and larger breeders had larger helpers. It was found that group size significantly increased group reproductive output. More importantly, reproductive success of male breeders did not depend on the presence of mature helpers, whereas female reproductive success increased when two males assisted her and tended to decrease when two females bred cooperatively. We conclude that breeding groups of J. ornatus have size hierarchical societies that relate to group size, and group composition of genetically unrelated and co‐breeding members affects their reproductive success.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that differences in life history may lead to consistent inter‐individual variation in behavioural traits, so‐called behavioural syndromes, animal personalities or temperaments. Consistencies of behaviours and behavioural syndromes have mainly been studied in non‐cooperative species. Insights on the evolution of cooperation could be gained from studying individual differences in life histories and behavioural traits. Kin selection theory predicts that if an individual’s reproductive ability is low, it had to aim at gaining inclusive fitness benefits by helping others. We tested this prediction in the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher, by assessing reproductive parameters of adults that had been tested earlier for aggressiveness and for their propensity to assist breeders when they had been young (‘juveniles’). We found that juvenile aggression levels predicted the acceptance of a subordinate in the group when adult. Males which were aggressive as juveniles were significantly more likely to tolerate a subordinate in the group when compared with males which were peaceful as juveniles, whereas females which were more aggressive as juveniles tended to expel subordinates more often. Females produced significantly smaller clutches when paired to males which had helped more as a juvenile, despite the fact that adult males hardly provided direct brood care. There was no evidence that females with a high propensity to help when young, produced smaller clutches or eggs when adult, but they took longer to lay their first clutch when compared with females with a low propensity to help when young. These results suggest that variation in behavioural types might explain variation in cooperation, the extent of group‐living and reproductive decisions.  相似文献

Cooperatively breeding animals, in which helpers may participatein reproduction with dominant breeders, are ideal species forexamining intraspecific variation in testis size because theyoften exhibit both monogamous breeding (low risk of sperm competition)and polyandrous breeding (high risk) within a population. However, little is known about testis investment as a result of spermcompetition in these animals. The substrate-brooding cichlidfish Julidochromis ornatus has a cooperatively breeding system,in which some males mate monogamously and other males reproduceas dominant breeders or helpers within cooperatively breedinggroups, in which male helpers frequently sire young. We examinedthe relationship between testis investment and male social statusin relation to the risk of sperm competition. As predicted fromsperm competition models, in groups with male helpers, boththe male breeders and the male helpers invested more in testesmass, compared to breeding males without male helpers. We alsofound a positive relationship between the testes mass of malebreeders and their male helpers, suggesting that males increasetheir investment in reproductive capability under the risk ofsperm competition. Sperm competition models also predict thatlarger testes are associated with increased siring success. Our paternity analysis supported this prediction; we found apositive relationship between testis investment by male helpersand the number of offspring they sired.  相似文献

Helpers in cooperatively breeding species forego all or partof their reproduction when remaining at home and assisting breedersto raise offspring. Different models of reproductive skew generatealternative predictions about the share of reproduction unrelatedsubordinates will get depending on the degree of ecologicalconstraints. Concession models predict a larger share when independentbreeding options are good, whereas restraint and tug-of-warmodels predict no effects on reproductive skew. We tested thesepredictions by determining the share of reproduction by unrelatedmale and female helpers in the Lake Tanganyika cichlid Neolamprologuspulcher depending on experimentally manipulated possibilitiesfor helper dispersal and independent breeding and dependingon helper size and sex. We created 32 breeding groups in thelaboratory, consisting of two breeders and two helpers each, where only the helpers had access to a nearby dispersal compartmentwith (treatment) or without (control) breeding substrate, usinga repeated measures design. We determined the paternity andmaternity of 1185 offspring from 47 broods using five to nineDNA microsatellite loci and found that: (1) helpers participatedin reproduction equally across the treatments, (2) large malehelpers were significantly more likely to reproduce than smallhelpers, and (3) male helpers engaged in significantly morereproduction than female helpers. Interestingly, in four broods, extragroup helper males had fertilized part of the brood. Nohelper evictions from the group after helper reproduction wereobserved. Our results suggest that tug-of-war models based oncompetition over reproduction within groups describe best thereproductive skew observed in our study system. Female breedersproduced larger clutches in the treatment compared to the controlsituation when the large helpers were males. This suggests thatmale breeder-male helper reproductive conflicts may be alleviatedby females producing larger clutches with helpers around.  相似文献

Translesion DNA synthesis (TLS) and homologous DNA recombination (HR) are two major postreplicational repair (PRR) pathways. The REV3 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes the catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase zeta, which is involved in mutagenic TLS. To investigate the role of REV3 in vertebrates, we disruped the gene in chicken DT40 cells. REV3(-/-) cells are sensitive to various DNA-damaging agents, including UV, methyl methanesulphonate (MMS), cisplatin and ionizing radiation (IR), consistent with its role in TLS. Interestingly, REV3(-/-) cells showed reduced gene targeting efficiencies and significant increase in the level of chromosomal breaks in the subsequent M phase after IR in the G(2) phase, suggesting the involvement of Rev3 in HR-mediated double-strand break repair. REV3(-/-) cells showed significant increase in sister chromatid exchange events and chromosomal breaks even in the absence of exogenous genotoxic stress. Furthermore, double mutants of REV3 and RAD54, genes involved in HR, are synthetic lethal. In conclusion, Rev3 plays critical roles in PRR, which accounts for survival on naturally occurring endogenous as well as induced damages during replication.  相似文献

The Rad50, Mre11 and Nbs1 complex is involved in many essential chromosomal organization processes dealing with DNA ends, including two major pathways of DNA double-strand break repair, homologous recombination and non-homologous end joining. Previous data on the structure of the human Rad50 and Mre11 (R/M) complex suggest that a common role for the protein complex in these processes is to provide a physical link between DNA ends such that they can be processed in an organized and coordinated manner. Here we describe the DNA binding properties of the R/M complex. The complex bound to both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA. Scanning force microscopy analysis of DNA binding by R/M showed the requirement for an end to form oligomeric R/M complexes, which could then migrate or transfer away from the end. The R/M complex had a lower preference for DNA substrates with 3′-overhangs compared with blunt ends or 5′-overhangs. Interestingly, ATP binding, but not hydrolysis, increased the preference of R/M binding to DNA substrates with 3′-overhangs relative to substrates with blunt ends and 5′-overhangs.  相似文献
