Contrary to large areas in Amazonia of tropical moist forests with a pronounced dry season, tropical wet forests in Costa Rica do not depend on deep roots to maintain an evergreen forest canopy through the year. At our Costa Rican tropical wet forest sites, we found a large carbon stock in the subsoil of deeply weathered Oxisols, even though only 0.04–0.2% of the measured root biomass (>2 mm diameter) to 3 m depth was below 2 m. In addition, we demonstrate that 20% or more of this deep soil carbon (depending on soil type) can be mobilized after forest clearing for pasture establishment. Microbial activity between 0.3 and 3 m depth contributed about 50% to the microbial activity in these soils, confirming the importance of the subsoil in C cycling. Depending on soil type, forest clearing for pasture establishment led from no change to a slight addition of carbon in the topsoil (0–0.3 m depth). However, this effect was countered by a substantial loss of C stocks in the subsoil (1–3 m depth). Our results show that large stocks of relatively labile carbon are not limited to areas with a prolonged dry season, but can also be found in deeply weathered soils below tropical wet forests. Forest clearing in such areas may produce unexpectedly high C losses from the subsoil.  相似文献

Locations of syncytia induced by the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines race 3, were compared in roots of ''Essex'', a susceptible soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivar, at three soil water regimes. The plants were grown in wet (-5 to -20 kPa), moderately wet (-30 to -50 kPa), and moderately dry (-60 to -80kPa) autoclaved Captina silt loam soil (Typic Fragiudult). In the moderately dry soil, syncytia were found only in the stele, but in moderately wet and wet soils, syncytia occurred primarily in the cortex and occasionally in the stele. The location of syncytia in the cortical tissue of roots growing in wet and moderately wet soils may account for the tolerance of susceptible soybean cultivars grown under well-irrigated conditions where there is less interference with water transport through roots. Cell-wall perforations and dense cytoplasm were characteristic of syncytial cells observed in root tissues of all treatments.  相似文献

Full-thickness skin wounds are preferably allowed to heal under controlled hydration dressings such as hydrocolloids. It was hypothesized that a wet (liquid) environment rather than a dry or moist one would accelerate the wound healing process. We compared skin repair by secondary intention in full-thickness skin wounds in wet (saline), moist (hydrocolloid), and dry (gauze) conditions in an established porcine wound healing model. The study included three animals with a total of 70 wounds layered in a standardized fashion on the back of young Yorkshire pigs. Twelve days after wounding, 0 percent of dry, 20 percent of moist, and 86 percent of saline-treated wounds were completely reepithelialized (p values = 0.0046 and 0.027 for saline wounds compared with dry and moist wounds, respectively). The accelerated healing was caused at least in part by faster contraction in wet wounds (p value < 0.005 compared with that of other groups 9 and 12 days after wounding). Development of granulation tissue was faster in moist conditions than it was for dry and wet wounds. The thickness and number of cell layers of the newly formed epidermis were greater in dry and wet wounds than in moist ones. It was concluded that these full-thickness porcine skin wounds healed faster in a wet environment than in a moist one. Dry wounds healed more slowly than moist wounds. The basic mechanisms of skin wound repair were influenced by the treatment modality as demonstrated by the observed differences in granulation tissue formation, reepithelialization, and rate of wound contraction.  相似文献

We investigated changes in the lymph (equivalent to plasma) and urine of the cocooning frog Cyclorana australis during the dry season in monsoonal northern Australia. Frogs in moist soil for two days were fully hydrated (lymph 220 mOsm kg(-1), urine 49 mOsm kg(-1)). From five weeks onwards the soil was dry (matric potential <-8000 kPa). Aestivating frogs at three and five months formed cocoons in shallow (<20 cm) burrows and retained bladder fluid (25-80% of standard mass). After three months, urine but not lymph osmolality was elevated. After five months, lymph (314 mOsm kg(-1)) and urine (294 mOsm kg(-1)) osmolality and urea concentrations were elevated. Urea was a major contributing osmolyte in urine and accumulated in lymph after five months. Lymph sodium concentration did not change with time, whereas potassium increased in urine after five months. Active animals had moderate lymph osmolality (252 mOsm kg(-1)), but urea concentrations remained low. Urine was highly variable in active frogs, suggesting that they tolerate variation in hydration state. Despite prolonged periods in dry soil, osmolality increase in C. australis was not severe. Aestivation in a cocoon facilitates survival in shallow burrows, but such a strategy may only be effective in environments with seasonally reliable rainfall.  相似文献

Rectifier-like Activities of Roots of Two Desert Succulents   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Axial and radial water flows for roots in response to appliedhydrostatic pressure drops, water loss from roots after variousperiods of drying, and development of new roots after rewettingdroughted plants were examined for two sympatric desert succulents.Agave deserti Engelm. and Ferocactus acanthodes (Lemaire) Brittonand Rose. For a 40 kPa hydrostatic pressure drop applied to20 mm long root pieces, radial water flows from the epidermisto the root xylem were 2- to 5-fold greater at the tip thanat midlength and were much less than axial flows along the xylem.Upon drying detached roots in air at 20 °C and a water vapoursaturation deficit of 1.2 kPa (50% relative humidity), radialwater flow decreased more than 10-fold in 3–6 h, and couldrecover to the original level 6 h after rewetting. The rateof water loss from attached roots of plants dried in air at20 °C and a 1.2 kPa saturation deficit decreased about 200-foldin 72 h, which would greatly limit water loss from the plantto a drying soil. At 96 h after rewetting roots of A. desertithat had been exposed to air at 20 °C and a 1.2 kPa saturationdeficit for 120 h, rehydration of existing roots and developmentof new roots contributed about equally to water uptake by thewhole plant. In summary, roots of these desert succulents canreadily take up water from a wet soil but do not lose much waterto a dry soil, thus effectively acting like rectifiers withrespect to plant-soil water movement. Soil samples from mature and secondary forests and agricultural sites in three subtropical life zones of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands were collected to determine the effects of forest conversion to agriculture and succession on soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents. Site characteristics that may affect soil C and N (slope, elevation, aspect, and texture) were as uniform as possible. Carbon contents (to 50 cm depth or bedrock) of cultivated sites, as a percent of corresponding mature forests, were lower in the wet (44%) and moist (31%) than in the dry (86%) life zones whereas N contents were relatively high regardless of life zone (60–130% of the mature forests). Conversion of forests to pasture resulted in less soil C and N loss than conversion to crops. The time for recovery of soil C and N during succession was approximately the same in all three life zones, about 40–50 yr for C about 15–20 yr for N. However, the rate of recovery of soil C was faster in the wet and moist life zone, whereas N appeared to recover faster in the dry life zone. Evidence for loss of soil C during cultivation and gain during succession to soil depths of 50–100 cm is presented.  相似文献

Injection of cattle slurry into a grassland soil decreases NH3 volatilisation and increases N utilisation by the sward, but may also increase denitrification losses. Denitrification rates were measured using a soil core incubation technique involving acetylene inhibition, following injection of cattle slurry (67 t ha–1) into a grassland soil. The slurry was injected, either with or without a nitrification inhibitor (DCD), on 8 December 1989. Two-weekly measurements were carried out up to 18 weeks after injection. Compared to the control plot, denitrification rates were significantly higher after slurry injection. Addition of DCD to the slurry almost eliminated this effect. Estimated N-losses during 18 weeks after injection were 0.9 (control), 4.1 (+DCD), and 13.7 (-DCD) kg N ha–1. Denitrification losses were 7% of the injected NH4-N and decreased to 2% of the injected NH4-N when DCD was added. Denitrification could account for about 19% of the difference in apparent recovery of N from slurry injected with and without DCD. The results suggested that considerable amounts of NO3 were lost due to leaching.  相似文献

Soil represents an important reservoir for mostentomopathogenic viruses. Invertebrateiridescent viruses (IIVs) (Iridoviridae) arenon-occluded DNA viruses that infectagriculturally and medically important insectspecies, especially in damp or aquatichabitats. We used virus extraction and insectbioassay techniques to determine the effect ofsoil moisture and soil sterility on thepersistence of Invertebrate iridescentvirus 6 (IIV-6) in a soil over a 90 day periodin the laboratory. Loss of activity of IIV-6in dry soil (6.4% moisture, –1000 kPa matricpotential) was very rapid and was not studiedbeyond 24 h. Soil moisture did not affect therate of inactivation of virus in damp (17%moisture, –114 kPa matric potential) or wetsoil (37% moisture, –9.0 kPa matricpotential). In contrast, soil sterilizationsignificantly improved the persistence of IIV-6activity, both in damp and wet soil. Controlvirus suspensions retained 0.72–0.87% oforiginal activity after 90 days, which wassignificantly more than the activity retainedin soil. These figures represent half lives of4.9 days for IIV-6 in non-sterile soil, 6.3days in sterilized soil (data pooled formoisture treatments), and 12.9 days for thecontrol virus suspension. We conclude thatextra-host persistence in soil habitats may bean important aspect of the ecology of IIVs.  相似文献

Model of ammonia volatilization from calcareous soils   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A quantitative model of ammonia volatilization from the calcareous soil uppermost 1-cm layer was developed and tested. The model accounts for the following processes: ammonium-ammonia equilibration in the soil solution, cation exchange between calcium and ammonium which results in ammonium distribution between soil liquid and solid phases, nitrification of dissolved ammonium, distribution of ammonia between liquid and gaseous phases and diffusion of gaseous ammonia in the soil air. The combined effect of various characteristics such as soil pH, cation exchange capacity, water capacity and nitrification rate on ammonia losses from various soil types have been studied. The model was validated against experimental results of ammonia losses from different soils for its use as a predicting tool. The model shows that most of ammonia losses can be explained by the interactive effect of high soil pH and low cation exchange capacity. Computations show increased ammonia volatilization with decreasing soil water capacity. Increasing fertilizer application rate has a small effect on percentage of ammonia losses. Increased nitrification rate and shorter “lag” period of nitrification reduce ammonia losses considerably. Good agreement was obtained between model calculations and experimental results of ammonia volatilization from 13 soils.  相似文献

Bolus injection of [13N]ammonia into the femoral vein of pentobarbital-anesthetized rats was followed by rapid clearance from the blood and first-pass extraction of nearly 30% by the lungs. Of the label present in the lungs at 6 s after injection (about 27% of the dose), more than 20% was in metabolized form. Of the label present in the lungs at 2 min after injection (about 10% of the dose), 18-25% was in ammonia, about 75% was in glutamine (amide) and less than 1% was in glutamate and aspartate. Thus, despite the presence of significant amounts of glutamate dehydrogenase, the overwhelming route for metabolism of ammonia entering the rat lung in vivo was the glutamine synthetase reaction. Lung tissue that was removed 6 s after intravenous injection of [13N]ammonia and incubated in Krebs-Ringer glucose medium at 37 degrees C for 20 min, showed a significant increase (more than one-third), compared to unincubated lung tissue in the quantity of label in glutamine. Between 6s and 2 min after injection, during which time the total 13N content of the lungs decreased by more than 60%, the maintenance of a quasi-steady state in the concentration of labeled glutamine suggested a short-term balance between formation from extracted ammonia and loss of glutamine into the circulation. Our data support the concept that the lungs are a source of circulating glutamine in the rat. Despite the large fractional extraction of blood-borne [13N]ammonia by the lungs, only minute amounts of tracer (0.2-0.6 ppm of the injected dose) were detected in the expired air within the first 5 min after administration of [13N]ammonia to anesthetized rats, so that pulmonary excretion was not a significant pathway of ammonia elimination. The present findings emphasize the importance of the lungs in the maintenance of whole-body nitrogen homeostasis and suggest the use of [13N]ammonia and 13N-labeled amino acids as non-invasive probes in the study of normal and diseased lung metabolism.  相似文献

Ammonia volatilization from a flooded tropical soil   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Ammonia volatilization, which follows upon the application of nitrogenous fertilizers to a flooded tropical soil, was directly measured in the greenhouse and in the field. Most of the ammonia volatilization losses occurred during the first 9 days after nitrogen application. Ammonia volatilization increased markedly with increases in soil pH. Nitrogen losses from ammonium sulfate applied to soils whose pH values were below 7.5 were very small. The losses from urea were much greater than those from ammonium sulfate. Mixing the fertilizer materials with the puddled soil reduced the losses. Ammonia losses from flooded soil were larger than from dry soil, and drying of a flooded soil reduced the duration and magnitude of ammonia volatilization. It is suggested that only a small amount of nitrogen is being lost through ammonia volatilization from many lowland rice soils. re]19750820  相似文献

Monopterus albus has to deal with high environmental ammonia concentrations during dry seasons and agricultural fertilization in rice fields. In this study, NH4HCO3 (10 micromol per g fish) was injected into the peritoneal cavity of M. albus, raising the level of ammonia in the body, in order to elucidate the strategies involved in defense against the toxicity of exogenous ammonia. During the subsequent 24 h after NH4HCO3 injection, there was a significant increase in the ammonia excretion rate, which indicates that the main strategy adopted by M. albus was to remove the majority of the exogenous ammonia through enhanced ammonia excretion. Exogenous ammonia was not detoxified into urea for excretion or accumulation. Six hours post-injection of NH4HCO3, ammonia content in the tissues built up significantly, especially in the brain, which suggests that M. albus had high tolerance of ammonia toxicity at the cellular and sub-cellular levels. By hour 12 post-injection, there were significant increases in the activities of glutamine synthetase in the muscle, liver, and gut, accompanied by significant increases in glutamine contents in the muscle and the liver. There was also a significant increase in the glutamine content in the brain at hour 6 post-injection of NH4HCO3. These results confirm the capability of M. albus to detoxify ammonia through glutamine synthesis. Overall, injection of NH4HCO3 had only minor effects on the contents of FAAs, other than glutamine, in tissues of M. albus because the majority (70%) of the injected ammonia was excreted within the 24-h period.  相似文献

Alginate-encapsulated and unencapsulated cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens Rsf were introduced into soil microcosms with and without wheat plants to evaluate bacterial survival and colonization of the rhizoplane and rhizosphere. Encapsualtion of cells in alginate amended with skim milk or with skim milk plus bentonite clay significantly enchanced long-term survival of the cells. There was a negligible effect on long-term bacterial survival when cells were encapsulated in alginate amended with TY medium or soil extract, as compared to water. Drying of beads resulted in a significant reduction in bacterial viability. After addition to soil, cells in dried beads increased in numbers and exhibited stable population densities, whereas cells added in moist beads showed stable dynamics at a higher level. Cells encapsulated in dried beads or fresh beads survived better than unencapsulated cells added to soil. Both cells in moist and dried alginate beads also survide a dry/wet cycle in soil, whereas unencapsulated cells were sensitive to these moisture fluctuations. Shortly after inoculation and 63 days after this, cells from moist beads colonized wheat roots at significantly higher levels than unencapsulated cells, whereas cells in dried beads did so at levels similat to unencapsulated cells. Cells in beads initially placed at different distance from developing root mat were able to move towards and colonize the rhizosphere, at levels of roughly 104 to 106 colony-forming units fo P. fluorescens R2f per gram of dry soil. Summary Nitrification and ammonia volatilisation losses from urea and dicyandiamide (DCD)-treated urea were studied in a sandy loam soil. Laboratory experiments indicated that 20 ppm (of soil) DCD effectively inhibited nitrification of urea over sixty days. If the urea was treated with DCD (20 ppm), ammonia emission from the soil was extended over 105 days; with urea alone, it was negligible after 15 days. A field study indicated that DCD treatment increased volatilisation losses of ammonia tremondously if urea was applied to the soil surface; these losses were minimised if the urea was placed at 5 cm depth. It would seem that nitrification inhibitors must be combined with a placement technique.  相似文献

Ammonia volatilization is the major pathway for mineral nitrogen loss in the calcareous soils of the Chinese loess plateau, with maximum losses reaching 50% of the fertilizer-N applied. A volatilization-diffusion experiment was carried out in the laboratory using a forced-draft system and soil columns of 15.5 cm depth. Urea was surface applied at rates of 210 kg N ha-1 to a soil with 10% CaCO3 and a pH of 7.7. The amount of ammonia volatilized as well as the concentration profiles of ammoniacal-nitrogen and soil pH in the upper 50 mm of the soil columns after 4, 7 and 10 days were measured and subsequently modelled. The mechanistic model of Rachhpal-Singh and Nye, originally developed for neutral, non-calcareous soils, was modified to include the pH-buffering action of the soil carbonates. Model parameters were independently determined or taken from the literature. Measured and predicted cumulative NH3 losses agreed very well in the first 10 days following fertilizer application. However, in contrast to the simulations, NH3-volatilization was still proceeding in the experiment even after 13 days, with cumulative losses reaching 60% of the applied N. In addition to the high initial soil pH, the low bulk density and high volumetric air content of the soil columns used for the experiment proved decisive for the high rates of ammonia volatilization, provoking a strong increase in the amount of ammoniacal-N diffusing towards the soil surface as gaseous NH3. The simulations showed that due to the high soil pH, the buffering action of the soil carbonates played a comparatively smaller role.

Ant predation and soil moisture have direct and interactive effects on the abundance and community structure of mycophagous flies Here, we replicated an experiment across three climatically different habitat types to describe how these small-scale processes (microclimate and predation) are affected by macroclimatic variability at a larger spatial scale (among habitats) Each week for eight weeks during the summer of 1993, 18 Agaricus bisporus mushrooms were placed on dry, moist, or wet potting soil, within predator access or predator exclusion treatments cups, at six sites in the piedmont of South Carolina, USA Two sites were moist hemlock ravines and four sites were dry ridgetops Mushrooms and soil were collected after one week and fly metamorphs were counted and sorted by species We described the effects of ant predation, soil moisture, site and week on the frequency of host use, metamorph abundance, and Simpson's diversity All three measures were affected by macroclimatic differences among sites and across weeks At wet sites and during rainy weeks, more mushrooms were used, more metamorphs emerged, and the communities were more diverse than at dry sites or during dry periods The small-scale effect of soil moisture was strongly affected by large-scale macroclimatic conditions In dry ridgetop sites and in dry weeks, abundance and diversity increased with increasing soil moisture In moist sites or dunng rainy weeks, however, soil moisture was unimportant and had no effect on abundance or community structure Predation was unaffected by large-scale differences in climate, but was affected by small-scale differences in soil moisture, becoming more intense as soil moisture increased This research demonstrates that the effect of climate on predation is a scale-dependent phenomenon, and that microclimatic effects are mediated by climatic conditions at larger spatial scales We relate these findings to hierarchical theory and hypotheses concerning the relative effects of tolerances, competition, and predation under different levels of environmental stress  相似文献

In the humid tropics, legumes are harvested and surface applied as mulch or incorporated as green manure. Studies on N dynamics and budgets from these systems report unaccounted losses of N. Ammonia volatilization may account for a significant percentage of these unexplained N deficits. The main objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the rate and amount of ammonia volatilization from organic amendments, both incorporated (green manure) and unincorporated (mulch), 2) compare ammonia volatilization of organic amendments on both acid (unlimed) and limed soils, and 3) correlate quality, i.e. polyphenolic and lignin concentration and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, of the organic amendments with ammonia volatilization and net N mineralization. In an incubation experiment, ammonia volatilization losses and net N mineralization were measured from fresh leaflets of 10 legumes over a three-week period. Ammonia volatilization losses for the 10 species ranged from 3.4 to 11.8% of the total N applied in the organic amendment. Lignin content was negatively correlated to ammonia volatilization. Ammonia volatilized from mulches but not green manures, on both unlimed and limed soils, suggesting that ammonia volatilization is a surface phenomenon and not affected by soil pH. Net N mineralization was affected by species and soil pH, but was unaffected by placement (green manure or mulch). For the farmer in low-input agriculture where N tends to be limiting, volatilization losses of N from legume mulch systems could be on the same order of magnitude as crop removal.  相似文献

Tephrocybe tesquorum is an ammonia fungus that forms reproductive structures successively on the forest floor after treatment of the soil with nitrogenous materials such as aqua ammonia and urea. Forest soil was treated with urea at the rates of 0, 5, 10 and 20 mg/g fresh soil for 5 d in the laboratory, then sterilized by gamma-irradiation. Vegetative hyphae ofT. tesquorum were inoculated into the sterilized soil, and the number and weight of fruit-bodies formed and the length of vegetative hyphae, were measured for 20 d after the inoculation. Only in the urea-treated soil did this fungus produce vegetative hyphae and fruit-bodies. Fruiting started 4 to 6 d after inoculation. The weight of fruit-bodies and the length of vegetative hyphae increased with the increase in the amount of urea added. These results indicate thatT. tesquorum develops vegetative hyphae and fruit-bodies when ammonium concentration, is high in soil.  相似文献

Soil characteristics are important drivers of variation in wet tropical forest structure and diversity, but few studies have evaluated these relationships in drier forest types. Using tree and soil data from 48 and 32 1 ha plots, respectively, in a Bolivian moist and dry forest, we asked how soil conditions affect forest structure and diversity within each of the two forest types. After correcting for spatial effects, soil‐vegetation relationships differed between the dry and the moist forest, being strongest in the dry forest. Furthermore, we hypothesized that soil nutrients would play a more important role in the moist forest than in the dry forest because vegetation in the moist forest is less constrained by water availability and thus can show its full potential response to soil fertility. However, contrary to our expectations, we found that soil fertility explained a larger number of forest variables in the dry forest (50 percent) than in the moist forest (17 percent). Shannon diversity declined with soil fertility at both sites, probably because the most dominant, shade‐tolerant species strongly increased in abundance as soil fertility increased.  相似文献
