The mechanisms responsible for fluctuations in species composition of semi-natural grassland are not well understood. To identify plant traits that determine the poor competitive ability of Festuca pratensis compared to Dactylis glomerata especially during summer, the growth of both grasses was monitored over time and at different temperatures and photoperiods. Plants of both grasses were grown from seed with non-limiting nutrient supply at three day/night temperatures (11/6, 18/13 and 25/20°C) and two photoperiods (16 and 12 h). F. pratensis had a significantly lower relative growth rate than D. glomerata, mainly due to its lower specific leaf area and reduced nitrogen productivity. At high temperature, F. pratensis had a considerably lower root weight ratio than D. glomerata leading to substantially slower root growth. F. pratensis responded to a shorter photoperiod with an increase in the net assimilation rate, whereas D. glomerata responded with an increase in specific leaf area. The low competitive ability of F. pratensis compared to D. glomerata was mainly associated with its lower specific leaf area and nitrogen productivity. The stronger decline of its competitive ability during summer was probably related to the decreased allocation of dry matter to the roots at higher temperatures which leads to slower root growth compared to D. glomerata. Summary A study was made of intra-species differences in sodium uptake by timothy (Phleum pratense) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), two pasture grasses that are generally known as being low in Na-content compared with perennical ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata). Na22 was used with NaNO3 as a tracer in a fertilizer experiment on seedlings grown on trays placed on benches in the greenhouse. With timothy significant clonal differences in Na-uptake varied from one half to the double, but the Na-contents were still appreciably lower than in ryegrass or cocksfoot.  相似文献

All dried vegetative cells ofPithophora œdogonia died within 1 h, while those ofCladophora glomerata andRhizoclonium hieroglyphicum retain viability to some extent for 1 and 8 d, respectively, under similar storage conditions. The viability of dried vegetative cells of eitherC. glomerata orR. hieroglyphicum decreased more or less equally when stored either at 20 °C. in light or dark or at 12 °C in dark, but was lost rapidly and drastically when stored at 0 °C in dark. Both dried and wet akinetes ofP. œdogonia were equally more viable when stored at 20 °C in dark than in light, but they lost germination ability when stored either at 12 or 0 °C in dark; this might be either due to loss of viability or dormancy induction at low temperatures. The water stress imposed by growing vegetative filaments either on highly agarized media, in NaCl-supplemented liquid media or in media undergoing progressive air-drying to complete dryness did not induce, but reduced akinete formation inP. œdogonia, decreased zoosporangium formation inC. glomerata andR. hieroglyphicum, decreased or totally suppressed akinete germination inP. œdogonia and zoospore germination inC. glomerata andR. hieroglyphicum. Akinetes ofP. œdogonia formed under water stress were equally viable, while zoosporangia ofC. glomerata andR. hieroglyphicum formed under water stress were comparatively less viable than those formed without any water stress. Akinete germination inP. œdogonia and zoospore germination inC. glomerata andR. hieroglyphicum were comparatively more sensitive to water stress than the formation of akinetes and zoosporangia. The akinete germination inP. œdogonia was more sensitive to water stress than zoospore germination inC. glomerata andR. hieroglyphicum and it might be either due to their large size, thick wall or dense content.  相似文献

Pollen was collected from different cultivated varieties of Dactylis glomerata in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and compared with an undifferentiated stock of Dactylis glomerata pollen harvested and stored dry at +4°C since 1981. The allergen content of the crude pollen extracts was established on the basis of the IgE antibodies from the sera of three different patients allergic to grass pollen, using the nitrocellulose immunoprint technique following isoelectric focusing (IEF) and separation in agarose gels. Coomassie blue and silver staining patterns were also compared. They showed some marked differences in the isoelectric points of the constituants of these extracts. Using this major allergen recognition by patient sera as a selection criteria we were able to delimit 8 Dactylis varieties with low or undetectable Dac g IV allergen amounts and 7 varieties which contained this allergen. Two other allergens used as markers enabled us to suggest a kind of taxonomy, based upon the allergen presence, of these 15 varieties. The effect of the storage temperature was studied for 8 different varieties kept at +4°C, -20°C and -40°C. The allergen recognition and silver staining patterns after IEF separation of the crude pollen extracts revealed a selective persistance of some constituants and the disappearance of others at +4°C. The effect of freeze-drying was also analysed in the same way. Finally the pollen constituants of one Dactylis glomerata variety, harvested in 1986 and 1987 and kept at different temperatures were compared using the same techniques.  相似文献

Summary Six grasses, Hordeum sativum, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea, F. pratensis, F. rubra and Lolium multiflorum were subjected to chloroplast DNA analysis based on restriction endonuclease digestion fragments and end labeling with 35S nucleotides. This method is compared with others in general use. The results indicate that Lolium multiflorum is closely affiliated with Festuca pratensis and F. arundinacea; in fact much closer than F. rubra is to any of them.  相似文献

Kummerow, Jochen. (U. Chile, Santiago.) Endogenous fluctuations of germination capacity in Dactylis glomerata. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(9): 915–920. Illus. 1963.—Dactylis glomerata caryopses, ‘New Zealand’ strain, furnished by the Ministerio de Agricultura of Chile, were enclosed in test tubes, carefully sealed with a Bunsen flame, and stored under constant conditions. Their germination capacity was periodically determined. In 1958/1959, a 2-peak annual germination curve was obtained. The germination increase was related with a diminution of the water content of the caryopses. The same material was seeded in 8 different zones of the Chilean Central Valley between 28°34′ and 40°35′ S. lat. The same germination procedures were practiced with the caryopses harvested in these 8 parcels. In the 1960/1962 period, 1-peak germination curves were found. We did not find the same relation between water content and germination as found in 1958/ 1959. There exists a certain relation between the velocity of germination and caryopsis origin. The velocity of germination decreases from north to south.  相似文献

Long photoperiods provided in growth cabinets and consisting of a conventional extended photoperiod or of a ‘light-break’ in the middle of a long, dark period, generally increased leaf length and sometimes leaf width and consequently the rate of expansion of leaf surface, but decreased rate of leaf production and tillering in vegetative plants of S.37 cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), S.215 meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) and S.24 perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) compared with short photoperiods. All plants received the same total amount of light each day. These effects were observed both in single plants and in plants grown close together to simulate sward conditions. The total dry weight of plant material was greater in long than in short photoperiods.  相似文献

Leaf and tiller development in vegetative plants of S.37 cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), S.215 meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) and S.24 perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) were measured in photoperiods varied by extending a basic period of natural light with low-intensity artificial illumination so that all plants received approximately the same amount of light each day. Increasing the photoperiod usually increased leaf length and sometimes leaf width, but decreased rate of production of leaves. However, the rate of production of new leaf surface increased with photoperiod. Increasing the photoperiod generally decreased the rate of tillering; thus, plants grown in long days had few tillers with large leaves and sheaths, in short days, plants developed more but smaller tillers.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if loss of germinability in Pyrus betulaefolia seeds stored at 4°C and at room temperature is associated with a loss of membrane lipid peroxidation or changes in antioxidant enzyme activities. The results indicated that germination percentage clearly decreased when seeds were stored at room temperature rather than at 4°C from 6 to 12 months. Room-temperature storage of the pear stock seed for 12 months decreased germination to 15.52%, but germination percentage was not changed when seed was stored at 4°C for 12 months. MDA, a marker for membrane lipid peroxidation, increased significantly under room-temperature storage conditions. Antioxidant enzyme (SOD, POD, and CAT) activities were a good indicator of germination percentage in pear stock seeds. Antioxidant enzyme activities of pear stock seeds at 4°C were higher than antioxidant enzyme activities in seeds stored at room temperature from 6 to 12 months. Antioxidant enzyme activities of the pear stock seed decreased markedly under conditions of room-temperature storage from 6 to 12 months. The results of this study showed that long-term room-temperature storage was detrimental for maintaining the vigor of P. betulaefolia seeds. The mechanisms responsible for this outcome are a higher level of membrane lipid peroxidation and a lower level of activity of antioxidant enzymes.  相似文献

The oviposition preferences of Oscinella frit, O. vastator, O. nitidissima, O. albiseta andO. nigerrima for differenct Gramineae were investigated in the laboratory. O. frit, laid most eggs on oats, Lolium multiflorum and Festuca rubra, relatively few eggs were laid on barley and virtually none on Dactylis glomerata None of the other Osinella species oviposted on cereals. Of the other species, O. vastator appeared to be the most polyphagous and the preferred hosts were L. multiflorum, Lolium perenne and Festuca pratensis; few eggs were laid on either F. rubra, Agrostis tenuis or Poa pratensis. The host ranges of the remaining species were much more limited. Although a few eggs were laid by O. nitidissima on Lolium, the preferred host was A. tenuis. Oscinella albiseta oviposited only on D. glomerata whilst nearly all the eggs laid by O. nigerrima were deposited on shoots of Arrhenatherum elatius. The distribution of eggs by O. frit on L. multiflorum and A. tenuis was different from that on oats; on grasses most eggs were laid inside withered leaf sheaths whereas on oats most were deposited inside the coleoptile. The oviposition sites of O. nitidissima, O. nigerrima and O. albiseta on their respective host grasses were similar to those of O. frit on grasses. O. frit laid most eggs on grasses which were at the five-leaf stage and tailoring.  相似文献

A study of the germination requirements of local populationsof Dactylis glomerata from NW Spain and central Italy showedthat, with the exception of one ecotype from central Italy, there was a positive germination response to alternating temperatures. With five bred varieties from the Welsh Plant Breeding Station,Aberystwyth there was no such response and constant temperatureswere as effective as alternating temperatures. A low temperaturetreatment (2 C) before germination at constant temperatures, also increased germination of the Spanish and Italian populationswith the exception of the ecotype from central Italy. Increasingair temperature from 15 C to 25 C during seed developmentincreased subsequent germination at constant and alternatingtemperatures. The relationship between the mean July temperatureand the germination of seven stocks of a diploid cocksfoot fromNW Spain suggested that, under field conditions also, air temperatureat the time of seed development is an important factor determiningseed germination. Bionomics of aphids reared on cereals and some Gramineae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In controlled temperature, light and relative humidity, Metopolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae multiplied more on young Proctor barley than on Blenda oats, and less on Cappelle wheat. Rhopalosiphum padi increased in number fastest on barley and slowest on oats. More survived, and generation lengths seemed shorter, on barley for M. dirhodum and S. avenae and on wheat for R. padi. Tests with young cereals outdoors generally agreed with those in controlled conditions. On mature plants, there were more M. dirhodum on barley, more R. padi on wheat and more S. avenae on oats than on the other cereals. Given a free choice in large cages outdoors, most aphids were found on barley. When allowed to choose between grasses, more M. dirhodum were on Dactylis glomerata, Poa pratensis and Festuca pratensis, more R. padi on Lolium perenne and F. pratensis, and more S. avenae on D. glomerata and L. perenne. Most aphids of all species combined were on F. pratensis, Lolium and Phleum, and fewest on Festuca rubra and Holcus mollis.  相似文献

Restoration of submerged aquatic vegetation from seed has been hampered by a lack of information on the appropriate conditions for collecting, processing, and storing seeds prior to dispersal. Seeds must be processed and stored under conditions that maintain seed viability, meet dormancy requirements, and prevent premature germination. This study examined the effects of collection date, processing technique, aeration, storage and induction temperature and salinity, and storage period on seed germination of two mesohaline aquatic species, Potamogeton perfoliatus and Ruppia maritima. Collection date and processing technique were significant factors affecting seed yield from donor populations. Seeds of both species remained viable and germinated best when stored at 4°C, and then exposed to freshwater induction conditions. However, their responses to other factors differed. Aeration during storage was necessary in order to maintain viability of P. perfoliatus seeds, whereas it was unnecessary for R. maritima seeds. Storage in freshwater at 4°C prevented germination of P. perfoliatus seeds, while high salinity during cold storage was necessary to minimize premature germination of R. maritima. Mean germination time of P. perfoliatus was dependent on storage salinity; in contrast, mean germination time of R. maritima seeds was dependent on induction salinity. These differences indicate that the methods required to produce large quantities of underwater plant seed amenable to large‐scale restoration efforts must be tailored to the specific requirements of individual species and must consider the range of processes from initial harvest through seed testing prior to field establishment.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the germinative ability of the seeds of four Narcissus taxa belonging to Section Pseudonarcissi after they had been conserved under the conditions of non-recalcitrant seed storage protocols. For each taxon (N. alcaracensis, N. longispathus, N. radinganorum and N. pseudonarcissus subsp. munozii-garmendiae), one seed lot was desiccated to 4% moisture content (MC) and stored under laboratory conditions (22°C, 40–50% relative humidity (RH), whereas another was dehydrated to 3% MC and stored at −10°C. The latter treatment simulated standard conservation conditions for non-recalcitrant seeds. After 26 months, embryo growth and germination were evaluated. Seed responses were correlated with their MC upon dispersal. Seeds of N. alcaracensis, N. longispathus and N. radinganorum left to dry on the mother plant during maturation had 8–10% MC when dispersed, tolerated non-recalcitrant seed conservation and germinated to >90% under the most favorable incubation conditions. Narcissus pseudonarcissus subsp. munozii-garmendiae seeds did not undergo maturation drying and had 46.7% MC upon dispersal. They reached 100% germination after being desiccated to 4% and stored at 22°C, were not recalcitrant, but failed to germinate when stored at −10°C under non-recalcitrant seed conservation conditions. Therefore, N. alcaracensis, N. longispathus and N. radinganorum seeds can be conserved under non-recalcitrant seed conditions in germplasm banks, whereas those of N. pseudonarcissus subsp. munozii-garmendiae are moderately recalcitrant. Seed storage behavior is influenced primarily by the extent of maturation drying of the seeds on the mother plant.  相似文献

One-month-old fruits of Acer ginnala with winged pericarp attached gave 44% germination and this was not increased by cold treatment at 4°C for 0, 10, 20, or 30 days, gibberellic acid treatment at 0, 1, 10, 100 or 1000 mg litre-1, or ethephon treatment at 0, 2, 20, 200 or 2000 mg litre-1. After 6 months of storage at 20–25 °C, germination of untreated fruits fell to 5% but could be restored to that of 1-month-old fruits by incubation at 4 °C for 30 days. After 9 months storage, no germination occurred in untreated fruits. Cold treatment (30 days at 4 °C partially restored germination (26%). Treatment with either gibberellic acid (1000 mg litre-1) and 30 days at 4 °C (40%) or ethephon (100 mg litre-] and 30 days at 4 °C improved germination (69%). The combination of all three treatments, i.e. 100 mg litre-1 gibberellic acid, 100 mg litre-1 ethephon and 30 days at 4 °C, optimised germination (86%). Thus, dormancy of A. ginnala developed during storage but could be reversed by a combination of treatment with low temperature and growth regulators. The highest germination (86%) was achieved after low temperature and growth regulator treatment of stored fruit.  相似文献

Effects of cold-dry storage on dormancy break and viability were determined for seeds of the five sub-alpine woody species Philadelphus incanus, Berberis vernae, Berberis dubia, Betula utilis, and Picea purpurea collected along an altitudinal gradient on the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. Germination tests were conducted at 20/5°C for seeds stored dry at ambient room temperature for 4 weeks and then at 3–4°C for 0, 6, 12, and 24 weeks. Dormancy break during dry storage, i.e., afterripening, was indicated by an increase in germination percentages and rates. Duration of cold-dry storage and altitude of seed collection had significant effects on germination. With an increase in duration of storage, germination percentages and rates of P. incanus and B. vernae increased with a decrease in altitude of seed collection, while they increased with an increase in altitude for seeds of B. utilis and P. purpurea. Seeds of B. dubia did not exhibit changes in germination percentages and rates with altitude because a high number of seeds remained dormant during storage. Seed viability after 24 weeks of storage ranged from high (88, 93.3, 92.7%) for B. utilis to low (15% for high altitude) for P. incanus. The potential for dormancy break to occur during cold-dry storage should be considered when studies on basic seed dormancy are conducted or when seeds from various locations are stored prior to propagating plants from them.  相似文献

We report the effects of storage time and pretreatment on seed germination of Fokienia hodginsii. Lower mean germination was observed in seeds stored for 2 years (6.41 ± 1.23 seeds/replicate) compared with those stored for 1 year (8.52 ± 1.06 seeds/replicate). Seeds collected from a southern location had statistically higher mean germination (9.67 ± 1.28 seeds/replicate) than those collected from a northern location (7.99 ± 1.36 seeds/replicate). Higher mean T50 was observed in seeds stored for 2 years (37.02 ± 4.43 days) compared with those stored for 1 year (30.69 ± 5.06 days). Mean germination of untreated fresh seeds was 9.97 ± 1.34 seeds/replicate and that of treated fresh seeds in 60°C water was 12.95 ± 1.24 seeds/replicate. Fresh seeds treated with 50°C and 70°C water had a significantly lower mean germination compared with untreated seeds and seeds treated in 60°C water. Mean T50 was lowest in seeds treated with 60°C water.  相似文献

Seeds with a water‐impermeable seed coat and a physiologically dormant embryo are classified as having combinational dormancy. Seeds of Sicyos angulatus (burcucumber) have been clearly shown to have a water‐impermeable seed coat (physical dormancy [PY]). The primary aim of the present study was to confirm (or not) that physiological dormancy (PD) is also present in seeds of S. angulatus. The highest germination of scarified fresh (38%) and 3‐month dry‐stored (36%) seeds occurred at 35/20°C. The rate (speed) of germination was faster in scarified dry‐stored seeds than in scarified fresh seeds. Removal of the seed coat, but leaving the membrane surrounding the embryo intact, increased germination of both fresh and dry‐stored seeds to > 85% at 35/20°C. Germination (80–100%) of excised embryos (both seed coat and membrane removed) occurred at 15/6, 25/15 and 35/20°C and reached 95–100% after 4 days of incubation at 25/15 and 35/20°C. Dry storage (after‐ripening) caused an increase in the germination percentage of scarified and of decoated seeds at 25/15°C and in both germination percentage and rate of excised embryos at 15/6°C. Eight weeks of cold stratification resulted in a significant increase in the germination of scarified seeds at 25/15 and 35/20°C and of decoated seeds at 15/6 and 25/15°C. Based on the results of our study and on information reported in the literature, we conclude that seeds of S. angulatus not only have PY, but also non‐deep PD, that is, combinational dormancy (PY + PD).  相似文献

Morphological and seed protein analyses of 26 species of the generaLolium, Festuca andVulpia confirmed their close systematic affinities. Six inflorescence characters readily differentiatedFestuca fromLolium. Protein similarities betweenFestuca of sect.Bovinae and cross-pollinated species ofLolium, coupled with cytogenetic and crossability data, substantiate that they should be united into one genus.Vulpia had phenetic similarities with sect.Scariosae, Montanae andOvinae ofFestuca. Lolium, Festuca, andVulpia are most likely derived from a common ancestral form which was close toFestuca pratensis andLolium perenne.  相似文献

Wheat seed samples with different initial infection levels of Fusarium culmorum were kept under different storage conditions for 36 weeks. Samples for analysis were drawn before storage and at intervals of 6‐8 weeks to determine the mycotoxin contents, seed health and seed quality. Zearalcnone (ZEA) accumulated to higher kernel contents towards the end of storage, when the seed was stored under warm and humid conditions [25°C/90% relative humidity (RH)], whereas the deoxynivalenol (DON) content of severely infected kernel samples (> 50%) remained unchanged under any of the conditions. On the other hand, DON contents increased in samples with a slight (4%) or moderate (15%) Fusarium infection level. when the seed was stored under Warm and humid conditions. Nivalenol (NIV) was not found in any samples immediately after harvest but later on in storage, and only under cool or warm but very humid conditions (15°C/84% RH and 25°C/90% RH). During storage, the mycotoxin contents of the samples did not reflect the percentage of Fusarium infected kernels. Under warm but dry conditions (25°C/62% RH) the seed germination rate showed a slight increase or remained nearly constant; at the same time the Fusarium infection level of the kernels decreased fairly fast. Cool and dry conditions (15°C/56% RH) maintained good seed quality but the Fusarium infection level of the kernels remained largely the same. Warm and humid conditions are not appropriate to maintaining quality of both seed and grain product.  相似文献
